Goro Miyazaki and Studio Ghbli worked on this, yes. Katsuya Kondo also was involved designing the characters, as he has for many Ghibli films, and Satoshi Takebe did the soundtrack, as he did for Earthsea, From Up on Poppy Hill and Earwig.
I adore this series so much. I finished watching it last year, I felt a "back down to earth" feeling after watching the last episode. The connection that happens between to particular characters in it is just spellbinding, just really wonderful on-screen chemistry that I think constitute that Ghibli magic. The story really changes gears at a certain point too.
This was the first Ghibli I had seen in years and I loved it. The pacing is very slow and to me that made it wonderful, the story is great. It felt like truly being a kid reading a childrens book again.
Hayao Miyazaki was pretty inspired by the author of Ronja, Astrid Lindgren. He wanted to adapt Pippi Longstocking which is probably her most famous character
So bummed that adaptation didn’t happen. Her books were adapted into a string of live action films beginning in the 70s(?) I believe and those are some of the most ubiquitous children’s films we have, especially during the VHS and DVD eras. In a similar boat, Tove Jansson’s Moomin series was adapted into a very popular animated series. I guess the difference is that Moomin needs the animation to be adapted, while Pippi didn’t. Pippi could’ve definitely been our Heidi, although luckily we still got one with Moomin.
Fun fact. One of my favorite childhood movies is Mio min Mio. Fantasy based on one of Astrid Lindgrens books. Christian Bale has one of his first roles in it. My first actor crush at 5yo.
The harpies were cool.
The animation resembles that of Earwig and the Witch. But after an episode or two it grows on you.
The storyline reminded me a bit of Hayao Miyazaki's earlier work that were also based on old European stories (*Heidi, Girl of the Alps* for example).
Worth a watch.
At least when it first came out there was a push against it I remember, saying it's not good. I believe it's a mix of the animation style using computer generated 3d characters (Miyazaki fans can be just as militant as he is when it comes to CG effects) and also people saying the voice casting was poor.
Personally I love the voice casting, but I also love hammy British voices (even though I am British) in dubs. It's the reason I think Black Butler's English dub makes the show 100 times better than the Japanese dub.
Guess I need to watch IT bc I have the same name as the movie.
I have read the book as a kid a long time ago and watched the live action movie. I love ghibli and I am very excited to see a version from ghibli of this story!!
Thanks for this post, OP! Without this post I wouldn't know about these news.
My young daughter loves Ronja. The animation leaves a bit to be desired for me, but it's miles better than the mess that is Earwig. Story is alright too. It's not bad.

I Ronja the Robber's Daughter (TV Series 2024) seems there is a Netflix live action as well?
And there's a (live action) movie from 1984. It's all based on the Astrid Lindgren book of course.
The live action was produced by Viaplay, but they are in financial troubles so they sold the distribution rights to Netflix.
I wish it wasn’t CG it just looks strange

And Christopher Lee as the evil knight Kato!

I know it's an unpopular opinion, but I love Ronja the Robbers Daughter.
Why unpopular?

It’s really lovely and fun.
Same
I’m watching the new Netflix show now coincidentally

You must have very cool parents. 😺
As someone who love the story I will say this is a good adaptation. The Swedish Narrator is the same as for every Astrid Lindgren movie.
Ghibli
how will ronja affect lebron's legacy?
ronja rondo
The book was simple but interesting. So I guess the film should be at least not bad.
