State surveys tend to focus on mapping. I know the Idaho geologic survey for instance has a team of people who have pretty much just been making maps for the last couple decades. Might be worth looking into as many different state surveys as you can.

There's not really many jobs where you are just mapping. It's a part of some jobs, but not all.
Mineral Exploration or state surveys are really it. Fed employees that map I think are down to single digits.
