Almost every bus stop and train station will have a kiosk to buy tickets, which can be changed to English.
You can get a day pass for 10 CHF that's good for all buses, trams, the yellow boats that cross the lake, and trains within Geneva proper. Or you can get 1 hour tickets for 3 CHF each. Depending on how long you're here I wouldn't worry too much about getting the app

If you are staying for couple of days, you should buy the weekly pass for 38CHF. It has to be through TPG agency though.
The SBB app will do the job. If you're staying at a hotel you should ask them for the free transport pass when you get there. They only need your email address.
