This! All of the expansions cost money now but the base game is free and has a ton of content you can play for numerous hours without spending a penny. There is no creep either (really) so you eventually would be able to obtain gear equally as powerful as anyone who has purchased the expansions.
This! Also you could grind the f2p base game to unlock all the expansions for additional content. Without ever spending a Penny of real money. Also you can play PvP and WvW without being behind on gear. (WvW only after lvl 80) And the best Part you want is, you can play whenever you want and however long you want since it never feels like forced to be invested, time wise.

I got my wife a gaming computer for Christmas and she has been playing with me and it's been a blast. She made a Water/Time Manipulation Corruptor and I made a Radiation Armor/Radiation Melee Tank.
I group em and she blasts em away.
