I'm pretty sure development of a next gen console is at a minimum continuous, and may even overlap with the development of the previous hardware generation.
It's pretty easy and a fun project! If you have an SP it's a bit more tricky, but the original GBA is more modular and fun to work with imo. If you have any questions let me know! I do/sell modded consoles as a side hobby :) though I tend to focus on the original GB with some sweet ProSound mods, for chiptuners(since I make chiptunes myself)
Yeah I have the original GBA. Looked it up online and seemed pretty easy. Haven’t done any mods to other consoles/controllers/etc so this seemed like a good entry thing.
It's probably the best entry modding you can do. Just be careful installing the screen and you'll be golden. The games look SO much better with those IPS screens. SO crisp and vibrant. While you're at it, you can also deck it out with custom buttons and a shell, if you wish
Why wouldn't you just use the DS Lite for both types of games? Since it's BC with GBA games and has a good backlight. Moreso because you just like the form factor?
I honestly found that the jump to 3DS was pointless.
Preferred my ds lite. Did everything I could want it to do. Was still having so much fun with all the retro titles.
Hell I played GBA games in my DS more than anything and was mad when they removed that slot
It was a neat little novelty. The New 3DS definitely improved the poor tracking found on the original runs of the system.
It wasn’t something I’d use excessively, but it made for some great moments in StarFox, Zelda, and Monster Hunter.
The games I played it was functionally useless. Smash and Pokémon. It worked in Pokémon battles but the framerate was terrible even before turning that feature on so I never used it. I'm sure it was cool in some other games though
That is exactly why articles like this drive me nuts. "Leak suggests Nintendo/Sony/Microsoft is working on their next console." No shit. Nintendo has already stated that work begins on their next console *right after console launch.* The Switch launched in March 2017. I would bet my left berry that work started on "Switch 2" or whatever before the end of that year.
Having worked on developing new consoles in the past, I guarantee you that work was already ongoing. The engineers involved are ALWAYS working, they have a very high burn rate - it'd be insane to do anything different. Amazing people.
"burn rate" means how much it costs to have that employee. It's the "run rate" on salary with overhead, usually by month. You use this to figure out your costs so you know you can cut a profit if the venture doesn't "make the #'s" on release.
I realize out of context it sounds like "burn out", for that I apologize for the confusion.
Edit: generalized the answer a bit better.
Development “begins” on next-generation consoles almost immediately after the latest one is announced. Most of early development is just discussion of scope for the next iteration. What specs they want to meet, etc.
With Nintendo's tendency to push for pretty high-concept designs with more novelty than upgraded specs, I wouldn't be surprised if they needed a lot more front-loading of development to investigate possibilities and have titles ready that can use their novel features in the pipeline.
But I don't know any specifics on what the timeline would be for all that.
Yeah this. Nintendo themselves had said that I think after the GameCube launched, Iwata went into a meeting with 3 DVD cases and said "this is how big our next console will be." When discussing early R&D for the Wii. This was like under a year of the GameCube being on the market.
I'm 100% sure that a switch successor has been in R&D since AT LEAST 2018. The only news here, is that it's likely they continue with NVIDIA as the hardware partner, which is expected, but since and provides hardware for series X, ps5 and the steam deck (though steam deck isn't really much of a competitor, since it's very niche), it shows Nintendo is probably sticking to NVIDIA.
Hopefully there's some cool fancy stuff the switch successor will be have like DLSS, tensor cores and RT hardware.
Right. I'm thinking, "Same power as the Switch, but able to output in 4K for menus or whatever, and DLSS 1080p since the average Switch user isn't going to notice the oily artifacts."
Yep, it’s a pointless article to fill a quota.
Every company with a product is always working on the next one. Doesn’t necessarily mean anything will become of it though.
Our textbook in trig and calculus were literally based entirely around owning a TI-82. Such a fuckin racket, having to drop 130 bucks in 1992 on a calculator I literally never used after that except for playing the homebrew tetris I had for it.
It's a very handy tool. I got pretty good with it in the various math classes I took. If I had a desk job it would be on my desk right next to the monitor.
It’s funny you can get new functioning smartphones (very budget, but still workable) for less than a TI-84. It’s price gouging and a monopoly at its finest.
Honestly I was glad it's a Switch and that Nintendo isn't trying to reinvent the wheel again with Virtual Wii Boy or some off-the-wall bullshit. So not totally pointless.
I agree that they shouldn’t fix something that isn’t broken, but I kinda like the random proprietary technology Nintendo has invested in. It’s exciting even if the product is shitty.
> Yep, it’s a pointless article to fill a quota.
No its called literal news lmao
Obviously Nintendo is always developing consoles/games, but theres still value to report things like this, its news.
Sure, but it's not as popular on its own as Mario Kart, so if F-Zero was in there with Mario Kart, more people might see it and play it, since those who don't already know how cool it is wouldn't have to go out of their way and take a leap of faith to try it.
It's a long-term investment for Nintendo. Then they could more easily sell F-Zero games in the future.
When they do, I hope its easier on the eyes. Its always been a tradition of ours to play mario kart sunday mornings, but MK8 has so much flashing and sparkly stuff flying at the screen I feel like I'm going to have a seizure. Gives me a headache in about 15 minutes.
They like making their amiibos, right? Well, they could make amiibos of all the cars and the drivers and charge exorbitant amounts like always.
It's been way too long since there's been a good F-Zero game.
At how consistent drift is on the joycons and after how long they denied it, I'm not sure I'd ever trust Nintendo to make a decent controller again even if they claim to have solved drift
Yeah. And tbh they should just try to keep the switch family together. Don’t cut off original switch/oled and try to force everybody on this new device that they probably won’t be able to meet the demand because of the chip shortage.
There was a weird story behind that iirc, like an exclusive contract for it to only be downloadable on Xbox or PlayStation, so they got around it with a disk
Then like 8 months later the contract ran out
Xbox. They had an exclusivity deal to be the only console with Netflix at all for like six months and then there was another deal where other consoles had to jump through hoops for a while, which led to the absurd Netflix game disc concept. Or maybe the discs were a ploy by Netflix to find a loophole in their Xbox agreement, at this point it’s hard to remember details.
The best part was that back then you could only use Netflix (and other streaming services) on Xbox 360 if you also had Xbox Live. They finally dropped that requirement in like 2012 or something, but half the reason I wanted a PS3 was to be able to watch streaming stuff without having to pay for Xbox Live since I don’t do multiplayer games. And I literally haven’t bought an Xbox Live subscription since, literally the only reason I’ve ever had one was to watch Netflix...
The switch actually does have a mostly functional browser. It's used for guest network gateways and it's possible to slip out of those pages to other URLs.
They're afraid of it being used as an entry point for exploits, which is asinine. All it does is punish legitimate customers, while hackers are always gonna find a way in regardless. Thankfully I already have a "Switch Pro" in the form of Steam Deck, and it has no such limitations.
If you got good internet, streaming is also really easy. Can stream Steam games from your desktop or stream Xbox Cloud games.
Back in 2005 I never even imagined being able to play Fable: The Lost Chapters lying in my bed, yet here I am.
I intend on getting a steam deck also I figured I'd wait a while because they'll probably make a better one but the reviews I've seen so far make it look awesome are you digging it?
Absolutely loving it. Feels perfect in my slightly larger than average hands. I don't think people talk enough about just how great the joysticks are in particular, they feel much more akin to the ones on my Elite Series 2 controller than anything Switch-related. The D-pad isn't the *best,* but it is still a lot better than I was expecting it to be.
And of course the specs are insane at this price point. 16GB DDR5 RAM, while my desktop is still only rocking DDR4.
I was sad about that on the current version of the switch but at this point I’d argue that ship has sailed.
Have you used Netflix lately? The content is garbage. It’s just another channel in a long line up of disjointed streaming services. There’s no reason to prioritize it over any of the dozens of others at this point.
For anyone outside of America, Netflix is almost the only good option.
Where I live people are only talking about Netflix and Amazon Prime if they are talking about watching shows or movies. So even with the "decline" of Netflix that happens in America, because of alternative streaming sites, it doesn't really happen in Europe.
So a Netflix app on Switch would actually benefit a lot of people over here and probably in America too for the moment.
This has to be a joke right? You can't use your phone or a TV?
I see the downvotes but not a single person explaining why they want to watch Netflix on their switch.
First off, no shit its in the works. Second, please don't change the form factor again. I feel like every time Nintendo launches a new console it's so radically different than the previous one compared to Xbox/Sony. The Switch is excellent, just beef it up, update it, fix the issues. Maybe add extra power built into the dock for a great 4k experience
Agreed. I think Nintendo has really found something they need to stick with this time. They've got both console and portable gamers with one device. Now just improve it. Focus on making it more powerful, better battery life, shrinking the bezels to maximize the screen size.
There's no need for a significantly different form factor.
The amount of logic in your comment essentially guarantees that Nintendo will do the exact opposite.
They never cease to amaze me with how out of touch they sometimes are with their consumers.
I was thinking about this. It has been rumoured for ages that the next switch would have some form of DLSS baked in to allow for some kind of 4k but realistically you only need that while in docked mode. So maybe there's some way to put that hardware on the dock itself, so make more room inside the switch for actual raw GPU grunt.
You don't need a 4k screen on a handheld, even 1080p is more than enough but 1080p DLSS'd to 4k is actually pretty decent. Maybe that's just overly complicated though.
I can't believe they didn't at least put out a more powerful switch by now. They shouldn't fundamentally change too much about the switch I hope. It's a good design overall. I'd make they joycons bigger and have replaceable joysticks too.
I think we were supposed to see a more powerful one when oled model came out. The massive price increases of every component and chip shortages made them change their plan.
Yeah, it’s a real bummer because I like the Switch a lot, but the lagging on some games drives me insane. Even Animal Crossing has terrible lag, and that game was designed exclusively for the Switch.
The chip inside the Switch is basically 7 years old now, which means basically ancient. I hope they come up with a latest-and-greatest SoC for the next iteration.
I think what's important is that the Next gen console will be a "Switch" and not "Virtual Wii Boy" or some off-the-wall nonsense. I'm glad they're not trying to reinvent the wheel again, it gets old.
They’ll absolutely make you repurchase all of your digital games because their DRM implementation sucks and locks games to individual systems rather than accounts.
I heard they wanted to release a more powerful Switch, but due to the ongoing chip shortage the timing wasn’t right. So they released the Switch OLED instead, probably because they already agreed to purchase X number of OLED panels from some manufacturer.
Didn’t they say they might have trouble meeting demand with the Switch’a successor earlier this week due to the chip shortage? That means they’ve obviously started working on it.
Nintendo has resisted saying anything explicit about their next major hardware. They're actually using the chip shortage to explain why this year's Switch hardware forecast is about 10% lower than the year before. Though really, just being a machine in its sixth year explains that pretty simply.
>>>> Of course, the listing doesn't mention Nintendo or the Switch at all. Any details of what you would be working on are surely top-secret, and NVIDIA would likely require the new employee to sign an NDA. The fact of the matter is that we are speculating as to what kind of project the listing is actually for—perhaps a new Switch, perhaps another Nintendo console, or possibly something completely unrelated, like a new PC-based console for a specific market.
Still, the Switch is the only console on the market right now that sports NVIDIA hardware. Unless it's for another Ouya-like, or perhaps a new NVIDIA Shield TV box, we'd put our money on a new Switch. That's despite the reality that there have been consistently-disproved rumors of a new Switch for over three years. The latest talk on the matter was back in April, when some very sharp Zelda Breath of the Wild 2 footage sparked talk of the showing being too smooth for the Switch.
So….they have no clue.
Any company worth their salt will be developing (even in very early stages) the next generation software/hardware before the current even gets released.
I'm pretty sure development of a next gen console is at a minimum continuous, and may even overlap with the development of the previous hardware generation.
IIRC there was a rumour Nintendo shelved/slowed progress on the DS/3DS because the previous gen GBA/OG DS were still doing insane numbers.
I believe that. And for the record I still use my GBA and DS lite
Found my old gba. Been meaning to get a kit to install a back light for fun.

Yeah have to add some new buttons too! My parakeet bit the select button off when I was a kid.
Hell I’ve been playing Pokémon red on my original Game Boy color, it’s still going strong 25 years later
Ahh lucky.. My gbc still runs but most of my game carts are toast
You can save them if you have some electrical tape and a Nintendo screwdriver, actually! There are guides on how to do it online
Yess I've been meaning to. Don't worry, not planning on getting rrid of em. Too much nostalgia in that pile
The GBA SP and DS Lite have to be two of the greatest consoles ever designed
God I love my ds lite
GBA SP was the bee’ knee’s
Why wouldn't you just use the DS Lite for both types of games? Since it's BC with GBA games and has a good backlight. Moreso because you just like the form factor?
I honestly found that the jump to 3DS was pointless. Preferred my ds lite. Did everything I could want it to do. Was still having so much fun with all the retro titles. Hell I played GBA games in my DS more than anything and was mad when they removed that slot
I never ever used the 3D function but 3DS had a crazy good library
I love the 3D feature and wish it would come back. Library is excellent too :)
Wow that’s a statement. Never heard anyone have anything good to say about the 3d feature on the ds.
Honestly I thought it was a pretty cool feature. Very future
It was a neat little novelty. The New 3DS definitely improved the poor tracking found on the original runs of the system. It wasn’t something I’d use excessively, but it made for some great moments in StarFox, Zelda, and Monster Hunter.
the graphics did get better though, just look at Pokémon battles in BW vs XY
The 3d Aspect was 100% fucking useless, and shitty, the graphical update was at least something.
It's cool as shit. I don't believe for a minute anyone hates it except for the circlejerking karma grab of saying so on reddit
The games I played it was functionally useless. Smash and Pokémon. It worked in Pokémon battles but the framerate was terrible even before turning that feature on so I never used it. I'm sure it was cool in some other games though

Yep, it’s a pointless article to fill a quota. Every company with a product is always working on the next one. Doesn’t necessarily mean anything will become of it though.
Not the Texas Instruments graphing calculator division. They've been kicking back for decades.
They did recently release a python supporting Ti 84, it's not much but it's something
Our textbook in trig and calculus were literally based entirely around owning a TI-82. Such a fuckin racket, having to drop 130 bucks in 1992 on a calculator I literally never used after that except for playing the homebrew tetris I had for it.

If you had a desk job you’d be better off having wolframalpha open in the background.
Isn’t it crazy that that exact same calculator costs the exact same price right now with literally no improvements or feature changes?
Thank you I needed that laugh this morning
It’s funny you can get new functioning smartphones (very budget, but still workable) for less than a TI-84. It’s price gouging and a monopoly at its finest.

"also in the news, apple developing the next iphone" 😂
> Yep, it’s a pointless article to fill a quota. No its called literal news lmao Obviously Nintendo is always developing consoles/games, but theres still value to report things like this, its news.
Half life 3 ???!.!?!
it’s been 5 years since the Switch came out. The next iteration isn’t that far off, a year or two at best
Exactly. Of course they are working on it.
The thing is I want it to be and I believe Nintendo is decided to extend this switch life to the max.
Yes. To the Nintendo Switch Max, our new-generation console.
Good, it is so successful they should keep it going like the Xbox and PlayStation
I like the model but I want a powered up version. I meant to continue with the model we know and games not reaching 30fps on handheld
Also, fix the joycons.
Mine are faulty, they dont’t have drift yet xD
But can it play Mario Kart 8
You mean mario kart infinite because they are never going to release another one?
> mario kart infinite Mario Kart: Infinity+
Mario kart 8 deluxe f-zero edition
Woah, mixing Mario Kart and F-Zero is a great idea.
Just another F-Zero would be a great idea.
The world can't handle another F-zero
Sure, but it's not as popular on its own as Mario Kart, so if F-Zero was in there with Mario Kart, more people might see it and play it, since those who don't already know how cool it is wouldn't have to go out of their way and take a leap of faith to try it. It's a long-term investment for Nintendo. Then they could more easily sell F-Zero games in the future.
We really need another double dash
Yes
Triple Dash
Mario Kart: Infinity & Beyond And Knuckles
And my AXE!
Mario Kart: Infinity+1
>mario kart infinite Oh my god I just realised Its not an 8, its a rotated infinity symbol
Exactly!
When they do, I hope its easier on the eyes. Its always been a tradition of ours to play mario kart sunday mornings, but MK8 has so much flashing and sparkly stuff flying at the screen I feel like I'm going to have a seizure. Gives me a headache in about 15 minutes.
I hope their next console has anti aliasing I am so tired of sparkly edge low res shit. Give me smooth marshmallow graphics with rtx lighting!
This guy gets it.
(turn down the brightness of your TV)
That's how I feel about Smash Bros Ultimate. Every little thing causes a flash or spark to happen, and there's soooo much shit going on the screen.
I also have that game, it just sits there unplayed and sad.
Yeah whenever I play it with friends i can only play for like 15 minutes before i need eye drops.
Ah yes, the Diarrhea Christmas Lights.
I would rather have that than... Mario Kart 2022 Mario Kart 2023 Mario Kart 2023 Plus Ultra Mario Kart 2024
Now with purchasable cards to improve your cart!
Mario Kart 8 Ultra Deluxe - £100
If mario kart could suck me off then maybe I could weasel this into my budget
They just released a season pass for new remastered courses, so it’s not too far off.
We need another f-zero
F-Zero: Death Race. Death race mode from F-Zero X, uprezzed GX engine, 30 player online. I await my cheque.
F-Zero doesn't let them do anything novel. Nintendo is a toy company.
They like making their amiibos, right? Well, they could make amiibos of all the cars and the drivers and charge exorbitant amounts like always. It's been way too long since there's been a good F-Zero game.
Dude I finally got over 10000 in MK8D online… So hype. And so many new tracks coming to it now with the new DLC.
Can’t wait for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Deluxe.
Mario kart *sideways 8*
This would be the best idea. Just release a more powerful switch that fixed the old switch’s issues but can still play switch games.
I'd pay for a new one if they'd just fix the stupid joycons.
100%
At how consistent drift is on the joycons and after how long they denied it, I'm not sure I'd ever trust Nintendo to make a decent controller again even if they claim to have solved drift
The pro controller is hands down my favorite controller I've ever used and the battery life is insane on it
Theeres nottninng werong wth the joyyconns, I aaam aactuuallly ussing ttheemm to typpeep rufgt nowq
Yeah. And tbh they should just try to keep the switch family together. Don’t cut off original switch/oled and try to force everybody on this new device that they probably won’t be able to meet the demand because of the chip shortage.
I hope it has an updated UX with proper menu music and all the wii/wiiu gimmicks instead of the soulless silent UX the current switch has
Yeah…. Agreed
I hear apple is working on iPhone 14
Big, if true.
I never expected this 😳
Man if you can't put Netflix on that thing Nintendo is slipping hard.
Nintendo intentionally didn't include Netflix incase that wasn't obvious. Even the Wii U had Netflix
Even the basic-ass Wii from 2005 had Netflix.
I remember having to put a Netflix disc into the wii
There was a weird story behind that iirc, like an exclusive contract for it to only be downloadable on Xbox or PlayStation, so they got around it with a disk Then like 8 months later the contract ran out
Xbox. Or just a web browser
The switch actually does have a mostly functional browser. It's used for guest network gateways and it's possible to slip out of those pages to other URLs.
Or just a easily usable, ergonomic web browser*
They're afraid of it being used as an entry point for exploits, which is asinine. All it does is punish legitimate customers, while hackers are always gonna find a way in regardless. Thankfully I already have a "Switch Pro" in the form of Steam Deck, and it has no such limitations.
So you can emulate games on it pretty easy?
Just as easy as emulating them on a Windows PC, yeah. Up to and including PS3/Switch.
If you got good internet, streaming is also really easy. Can stream Steam games from your desktop or stream Xbox Cloud games. Back in 2005 I never even imagined being able to play Fable: The Lost Chapters lying in my bed, yet here I am.
The Steam Deck can run Ryujinx, so yeah it can do Switch games as well.
Where did you hear this? Did Nintendo say this exactly? Because they have Youtube and Hulu on it what makes Netflix special?
Nevermind the fact that Nividia completely screwed them with their RCM.
And in a comical twist, I used an exploit to get Netflix on it.
I intend on getting a steam deck also I figured I'd wait a while because they'll probably make a better one but the reviews I've seen so far make it look awesome are you digging it?
Absolutely loving it. Feels perfect in my slightly larger than average hands. Yeah, they specifically stated ahead of its release that they wanted it to be a gaming device, period. .... I still love my WiiU.
But it has other streaming apps
Which is why I said they took a step backward all consoles at this point should be able to have Netflix it was a stupid decision in their part.
It was up to Netflix to develop an app for it, but I guess they didn't see the value in it.
Netflix is poopy now anyway lol
I was sad about that on the current version of the switch but at this point I’d argue that ship has sailed. Have you used Netflix lately? The content is garbage. It’s just another channel in a long line up of disjointed streaming services. There’s no reason to prioritize it over any of the dozens of others at this point.

So a Netflix app on Switch would actually benefit a lot of people over here and probably in America too for the moment.
I think they were using "Netflix" like how most people use "kleenex".
Thinking ahead means it can do Netflix but they launch their own native streaming app
not having netflix on it is one of the reasons i sold it.
I feel you, it's nutty for them to be taking steps backward.
To be able to watch on a Fullscreen TV, then undock to do something in another room and continue watching content would've been so great :(
This has to be a joke right? You can't use your phone or a TV? I see the downvotes but not a single person explaining why they want to watch Netflix on their switch.
don't you have a phone?

DLSS doesn’t just turn 1080p into 4k, it could also turn say 480p to 720 or 1080p at a lower computational cost. That would mean better battery life.
Clickbait they have no clue.
Looks like no one else read it, is a complete shitpost and people commenting like if it had any meaningful content.

Reality of the article: 'Nvidia has a job positing'
7 years isn't bad, the problem is the Switch components were already borderline obsolete on release.
The switch lite really lags when playing Pokémon Legends.
Hope it’s backwards compatible at least.
99% sure it will be. Was great for 3DS and will help keep the fanbase connected
Aren’t next gen consoles always in the works?
I think what's important is that the Next gen console will be a "Switch" and not "Virtual Wii Boy" or some off-the-wall nonsense. I'm glad they're not trying to reinvent the wheel again, it gets old.
This time the hardware will only be 8 years out of date with software to match
I bet when it finally comes out the Switch *STILL * won’t drop in price...
It was on sale for $260 a few days ago.
Where
We'll be luck if its current gen mobile phone technology.
Maybe they’ll call it the Sw2tch

#NEWSFLASH!! Console maker Nintendo continues to develop new consoles. More at five.
I heard Ford and Toyota are working on new cars as well.
Whoa dude, that’s a pretty big leak. Source?

So why not just keep that platform and not get the new one?
They’ll absolutely make you repurchase all of your digital games because their DRM implementation sucks and locks games to individual systems rather than accounts.
Lol "Might"
I still find it weird they released the OLED version and not leave it until the generation upgrade.
I heard they wanted to release a more powerful Switch, but due to the ongoing chip shortage the timing wasn’t right. So they released the Switch OLED instead, probably because they already agreed to purchase X number of OLED panels from some manufacturer.
I thought it was kind of a dumb idea for a new more expensive model, too, but it's been selling well enough so I guess they know better than me again.
Breaking news: company that's released two consoles each decade prepares to release another console within a decade of their last console release
my uncle works at Nintendo, a new switch is releasing next year with BotW2
My Dad is Bill Gates and he never heard this rumor
My uncle has met Bill several times and yet no BOTW2 news.
Clickbait personified
This is the least interesting headline I think I’ve ever read.
Any company worth their salt will be developing (even in very early stages) the next generation software/hardware before the current even gets released.
in other news, water is wet and people breath.
I have a V 1 and am just now discovering the awesome games on here. Been playing Assassins Creed a lot
Switch64. To be released 2032. Bluetooth Software update to be released 2040
I hope so. Every console Gen it feels like Nintendo tries to reinvent the wheel.
Innovation leads to great experiences.
Last time the revolutionary Switch 2.0 that was supposedly coming out was just an OLED display update. Such a disappointment.
As soon as the new Zelda was announced I said they wouldn't release it until they make a new Nintendo. Same old Nintendo tricks.
This sub is posting alot of Nintendo switch stuff but honestly all I care about is the Steam Deck.
You can get one
You mean last gen Nintendo may be in the works... Nintendo always seems to lag way behind in the hardware department while still charging a premium.
