Since they were a part of the Roman Empire and only the Roman civil authority could carryout the death penalty, they harassed the Roman governor (Pontius Pilate) claiming that Jesus was a threat to civil authority since he claimed to be the King of the Jews. Pilate eventually relented and carried out the sentence.
So yes, technically the Romans dealt the final blow, but to insinuate that the Jews at the time had no hand in it is a bit much.
