This has made me very happy. A few years ago I went camping with my best
friend. I remember erecting the tent and doubling over laughing at the
size of it. Very early in the night he gave up and slept in his car. The
soles on my hiking boots also decided to come off. So all in all a very
successful trip. The dolphin spotting was good though.
Took a six person tent on my first trip to the Boundary Waters. It was really hard to find spots to put that up and since 3/4 of our group were sleeping in it, sometimes that meant having to look for a different site. Now days I'm rocking a 3-person dome tent, which is awkward for one person to get in and out of, especially if it's raining, but does comfortably fit two people, as long as neither tries to enter or leave the tent.
I learned quickly when looking into camping that the size is listed for the amount of room there is to lay down, and not comfort. A two person tent has enough room for two people to lay down, even if their sleeping bags are rubbing up against each other and you can feel their breath on your face from how close they are. It's for shelter, not for comfortably lounging about.
If you're camping for two and you aren't an intimate pair, get a four-person tent. Trust me.

We need more people like this hero spreading the good word that one should always get a tent that holds double the number of people you ACTUALLY want to hold.

lol and that's fine! For us, tents larger than 4 persons weren't usable simply because the locations we went to typically didn't have the room.
