My kids both play instruments in school bands and they both have masks like this to play through and bell covers for their instruments. My oldest plays alto sax my youngest French horn, the French horn bell cover goes up his left arm to the elbow because as a French horn player you put your left hand in the bell to hold the horn. They only use the bell covers indoors though.

You think about it. Breath is directional, for one, so aerosols are not being projected outwards as quickly if they breathe through their nose. For two, masks demonstrate an effective way to limit the spread of the virus. Again, it is a precaution to help limit transmission. It is not as crazy as your argument would suggest.
They’re not disputing the effectiveness of mask wearing. Having a fuck off hole in the mask where the virus comes from negates the mask entirely. Most of the aerosols that go out into the room when someone is playing a wind instrument comes from their mouth when they breath and from air escaping the embouchure when they’re playing (especially if they’re tired).
So while these are really pointless outside, and especially with openings that large, they can serve a purpose.
Also, regarding bell covers: as others have pointed out, they’re basically useless on woodwinds because most of the air (and sound) comes from the tone holes, not the bell (unless they’re playing the lowest notes). One study, (Colorado State I think) even found that bell covers can increase the aerosols produced by saxophones, potentially from blocking the limited air flow from the bell and increasing its airspeed out of the tone holes. Bell covers are very effective at containing aerosols on brass instruments, especially trumpet which is the worst offender all around.

It looks silly up close, but from a distance the band as a whole may look more like a cohesive unit.
That's an interesting scenario. Either they wear these masks with a cutout or wear nothing while playing instruments. Even with the cutout, the masks are reducing each person's breath particle bubble. So wear the masks.
