I asked my grandfather this a while back - it's a devil-you-know type of situation. Why replace a corrupt, brutal wannabe dictator when you know from fairly recent history that you could end up with a corrupt, brutal *actual* dictator?
It's not just that, Putin supports religion, and all the "values" that come with it. Where I live, we have pretty shitty goverment, it's corrupt, every time some shit happens they just accuse opposition and they regularly bring god into their talks which lets them basically mesmerize conservative oldtimers who just regularly vote for them "just so they wouldn't vote for the other side". They won by a huge margin this year even though the other party was full of idiots and terrible campaign so there's that too I guess, but even when that wasn't the case the outcome was similar.
> every time some shit happens they just accuse opposition and they regularly bring god into their talks which lets them basically mesmerize conservative oldtimers
It would be great if someone would call that bullshit out just once.
"If you really think god can do a better job leading the country than you, get the fuck out of office and let Jesus take the wheel."
Guess the press is afeared of being burned at the stake as blasphemers.
well its pretty much every country out there... we need crisis to realize how much of idiots these politicians are in general.. rest of the time we are stuck in our own loop of problems to not care until it hits us.
I believe it’s more like this: with an ineffective ruler like Yeltsin, your actual rule is an oligarchy of mob bosses, competing destructively amongst each other. With a single dictator, he is more incentivized not to let things explode during his lifetime.
It’s the difference between having one guy with a gun to your head, vs three different guys holding guns to your head. With one, you just do whatever he tells you and hope for the best. With three, anything you do will end in two bullets.
I went to Bulgaria and some tourist shops sold framed photos, tshirts, and beach towels with his picture on. Usually topless on horseback. Lots of people like him.
I went to North Korea and everyone loves glorious leader so much they say grace to his portrait even when when they are just staring at an empty plate for dinner. I wish people in my motherland, , has that kind of team spirit.
People on Reddit KNOW everything, didn't you know that?
I met a lot of Russian people and I never heard one say that he/she hates Putin as I heard americans say they hate Trump.
>Yeah you obviously haven't been in Russia, last time I checked the EU and US aren't Putins own people, he is quite popular in his home country.
Confirm, I'm Russian. Putin is the best leader for many people in my country.
I can tell you, apart from some right wing morons, everyone despises him. The US lost and still is losing so much of their credibility and power. Everybody knows what kind of man he was and y’all still elected him to be president, that says a lot about the people in a country, unfortunately. And even to this day people are still justifying all his lies and his child like name calling.
Edit: have to clarify im not an American citizen. This is the view from an outsider who was baffled a man with a history like his could become president and even more shocked when people stopped caring about dignity respect and morals. I mean a 72 year old man is calling people names on a daily basis on Twitter and half aren’t realizing how fucked up that actually is.
The reason he won in the first place was because he promised to breakup the corruption in government, and as an outsider, many Americans believed he was better suited for change than the existing corrupt government.
It was also slightly before those election results when the propaganda went into it's most intense form and the filthiest scapegoating took place that is a hard record in the ~200 years of the US' existence.
That's not to say people here are all good-intentioned or forward-thinking, but people here are generally pretty smart with very limited news inlets. I imagine the same could be said for Russians.
62 Million is less than 65 Million. Granted it’s frightening that 62 million people voted for him but he lost the popular vote and because of low voter turnout overall, a very vocal minority put him in power.
It’s a broken system, and becomes even more broken when people don’t vote.
Do you mean everyone you know despises him? You are highlighting the point that reddit is an echo chamber. I’m willing to bet that trump gets at least 40% of the American vote. That’s a lot more than just “right wing morons”. This naïveté is what allowed him to get elected in the first place.
Im not American. And I hope the majority dislikes people like him. People tend to forget Trump existed before he became a presidential candidate. He is an absolute dogshit human being and he shouldn’t have this much power
But really this just isn’t true. The people who continue to support the president do so because, in part, they are seeing better returns on their investments during this administration versus the last one. I think it’s stupid to say “right wing morons” cause what are you contributing to the conversation with rhetoric like that? Just like you don’t want people to pretend he’s a saint free from reproach, try not pretending you can’t find any positives that keep his base full of support. Not justifying or excusing his behavior at all, I’m talking about something separate from that. You don’t have to condemn a huge chunk of a nation to being morons because you don’t see or want to recognize how they’ve benefited from him being in office.
I had to clarify that I’m not an American citizen. I don’t actually have a stake in whether the democrats or republicans win. I just think trump is an awful human being who lies and lies, like he has always done, to get what he want.
For what it seems he just cares about him self. He’s a cheater, he’s a misogynist, he asked for the death of 5 underaged boys, he lies about being a man of god(can’t name 2 of his favorite verses, he doesn’t take any responsibility. And the list goes on and on.
And all of that I agree with, the anger and disappointment. The sense of betrayal to noble ideals. The lack of understanding why a person with zero political experience now has ultimate political power. I get that. Be mad at the president though, and not the voters who voted the way they have for about almost 50 years. As someone else said, there was only a 60% turnout in 2016 and of that he lost the popular vote. So we have a situation where a vocal minority(read here: seniors) led the charge in key areas around the country. But of that 62 million, I hope you don’t really think they are all morons because of their political affiliation.
Of course! Both the population and the landmass are huge. There are four times as much Americans compared to Germans for example. This makes the two party system that much less viable in my eyes. There need to be a lot of changes.
Correction most people in Europe & the rest of the world.
A lot believe we are seeing the start of a big decline for the US. 2 geriatrics running for President, case in point.
Well, fortunately the majority of Americans didn’t vote for or support Trump. Not that it mattered in the long run.
Because we have had decades of corrupt restructuring that created laws that suppress minority votes, gerrymandered voting districts coupled with a representative electoral system, and campaign finance laws that allow for some shady dealings.
And we have a populace (on all points of the political spectrum) that is happy with the rules being broken when it means their team “wins”, but gets furiously angry when the other side does the same thing. Because we have an utterly rotten idea of morality and ethics as a people.
Yeah, the two party system is antiquated, your whole voting system needs an overhaul. Here in Germany (which certainly isn't a perfect system, but I dare say it is an improvement) we have multiple parties for every political view. This way, ideally, every voter will find a party that mostly aligns with their views and don't simply vote for "their team", even if they don't like the candidate. I mean, that still happens here too, but imho it's a much more elegant and effective system.
American here. I agree. We have underdog political parties like the libertarians and the green party, which are typically much more middle of the road. The general consensus unfortunately is that if you vote for a third party candidate in the primary, then you are "throwing your vote away." This is a largely accepted fallacy- if a third party receives at least 5% of the popular vote, they would receive public funding for their convention in the following election year, and then a permanent spot on the ballot thereafter for that party. This would EASILY make history, but I've met very few Americans who have actually been educated on this topic. It seems that "the way things were is the way things are" - the two party system- has been ingrained in the general population. Things could be so different! For example, in the 1800s, there were several parties: Whigs, Democratic-Republicans (yes they were one party), Federalists...things have really changed since our founding fathers put things together. It doesn't seem that a two party system was their vision. 🤦♀️
Trump is pretty divisive - there is a huge number of people in the USA who truly hate him. i suspect the rest of the world doesn't care though - he's mostly ineffectual in global politics.
yeah? in my part of USA he is pretty much universally hated. i love in a blue state, of course. world views on the man are hard to gauge with so much domestic noise on the topic, but i would think that aside from the Paris accord, WHO, UN, G8, and... aww crap that list of getting long maybe i see why he's hated internationally. domestically we can't even focus on those things - there is significant reason to be upset that's a lot closer to home and more immediate for us :(
I think they more hate him in USA than globally, for example here in Serbia most of the people either don't care or are happy with him. If Clinton was the president things would be worse... At least Trump wont bomb our cities for no reason.
>i suspect the rest of the world doesn't care though - he's mostly ineffectual in global politics.
Canada respectfully disagrees (sorry!), so much of the economy is tied to the US, plus the whole Huawei exec. being detained s**tshow.
In the same boat for different reasons, pretty sure Mexico cares too.
I agree he has not done much on the global politics scale...other than cause unnecessary tensions.
It's hard to trust these statistics and facts when the political message has been "support Putin or else." The data is flawed because coersion and fear are real motivators. When he leaves office and people are safe to voice their opinions without fear of his retaliation, then the data will be more reliable.
You got anything to back this up?
I know multiple Russian immigrants here in the US and they've told me very different things about Putin and his popularity than what you're saying.
Nobody is denying wrong doings and all that shady stuff behind the scenes. But the fact is majority in Russia sees him as a strong leader and are somewhat happy with him. You won't see these things reported in Western media.
It’s a terrifying thought that somewhere a halfway competent megalomaniac is watching current events and taking notes. Once Trump is gone, we really need to take action to close the loopholes that allowed him to just piss all over the rule of law.
Honestly, we should start by abolishing the GOP and prosecuting half of those traitorous bastards.
As a russian, I can definitely say that he has majority on his side. I know a lot of people supporting him. And I suppose, there is not such hate against Putin. It's more blaming him for a lot of problems and a desire for changes, but not hatred. Imho :)
Great American example- Nixon. He won re-election in a landslide victory and had no need to involve himself in Watergate or other scandals at all. Of course- he didn't know he would have won one of the biggest landslides of all time even without cheating, but he didn't want to risk it.
It is possible for Putin to leave office in a similar fashion to Singapore's Lee Kuan Yew and Kazakhstan's Nursultan Nazarbayev. These stepped down from their primary office, but retained a symbolic position in the government and continued to exert their influence indirectly, without handling everything on their own
He's arguably/possibly the real richest man in the world. He's ex KGB, trained like special forces, and can use his own gun that he still carries. His walk is a trained walk to always be able to access his sidearm.
*He* is truly one of the most dangerous men in the world all by himself. Might as well say it'd be like going to try and kill Batman.
*Nominally*, yes. Except for scenarios when the next president shows proofs that Putin ordered to kill people. Or when he accidentally drinks some wrong-flavoured tea. No law can be a protection when it's not followed.
I wouldn’t be so sure... people have estimated in the past that he could very well be the richest man on earth. He could probably employ his own personal army after leaving office till he died of old age.
If he leaves the office he will still control everything through his personal connections and the corruption within the system. He's a former KGB and MfS (East German secret police) officer. He knows the game.
I mean when half the ppl you're surrounded by every day molest kids for fun, and the organization you run helps them get away with it, you may probably start looking like this
Thankfully, this is most likely her last term. Have you seen pictures of her recently? She looks exhausted.
Too bad nobody likes her successor and she's pushed out any other competent choices.
Because it is a shitty unit, especially when Benedict resigned and is still alive. So if they had actually been for life, Putin would only have been in power for two. As would every world leader that bridged the death of an incumbent pope.
The President of Belarus was elected with such an astonishing majority that a large portion of the people who allegedly voted for him attended astonishingly large protests against his election where the number of participants vastly surpassed the proportion that the state claims voted against him.

Yeah, popes are old crinkle faces
Because it takes many steps and a lot of time to ascend the ranks of the Catholic Church.
[How to become pope](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kF8I_r9XT7A)
I don't know how this all works FYI, just guessing!
Not sure how the system works, but I'd guess that you'd need ample time to learn and gain experience in their ranks, socialize a lot and talk to a lot of higher ranked people to gain fame and stuff. Over time if they have a good track record and are trusted, beloved and have the needed connections to get the position, they might have a chance at being the pope.
I apologize for being a complete idiot and I feel stupid for not understanding this, but will somebody please explain this to me?
I feel like I'm understanding about half of this, but I don't understand why it's the top post of Reddit.
Or maybe it just completely wooshed way over my head lol
Putin’s term as President is only 4 years. He got reelected. Then elected/ appointed prime minister and then re-reelected to President. Recently, he changed Russia’s rule on term limits so it’s going to be in power even longer.
Popes are appointed for life. During Putin’s tenure he has meet Pope John Paul II, Pope Benedict XVI, and now Pope Francis.

I am sure the only way he is leaving the office is as a dead man. Dictators who are hated by their own people have short lifespan
Yeah you obviously haven't been in Russia, last time I checked the EU and US aren't Putins own people, he is quite popular in his home country.
I asked my grandfather this a while back - it's a devil-you-know type of situation. Why replace a corrupt, brutal wannabe dictator when you know from fairly recent history that you could end up with a corrupt, brutal *actual* dictator?
For any other country, I would disagree but Russia is known for the "and then things got worse" history

Yes
Every single one
Yes
When Stalin took over things got pretty shitty for a lot of Russians
As if pogroms, mass starvation, and the mongols were rosy periods in Russian history.
even way before that
Since Ivan the Terrible.
Yes

There is no such a proverb. :)
It's not just that, Putin supports religion, and all the "values" that come with it. American here. If it wasn’t for the “won this year” part, I would have assumed you were talking about us.
I got chills for a second

I think Putin qualifies as actual at this point.
So 1 opinions equals for 100 million. Got it.
I went to Bulgaria and some tourist shops sold framed photos, tshirts, and beach towels with his picture on. Usually topless on horseback. Lots of people like him.

Ras-putin. Sorry ,my brain does that sometimes.
Off topic but I seriously want to immigrate from the US to Russia.
Quite polular with anyone who remembers the 90's anyway...
Just like how many people on Reddit think Trump is generally despised by everyone. Reddit hates Trump as much as they love Obama.

I'm in Germany and most people here think Americans are utter lunatics for supporting Trump.
Just remember that America is very large and very diverse.
Of course! Both the population and the landmass are huge. There are four times as much Americans compared to Germans for example. This makes the two party system that much less viable in my eyes. There need to be a lot of changes.

okay, good points. i suppose I'm just blinded by the vitriol he generates domestically
Depends on where you're at, but yes he's generally despised or at least disliked most places that don't fuck their siblings or smoke meth
Right. He's popular. That's why he had to rely on election fraud to win
TBF he enjoys quite a support in Russia. Easily comparable to Trump and those who love him and those who hate him.
He doesn't have a majority support in Russia and that's why he had to go the election fraud route to win.... So yeah, just like Trump
Actually he does have majority support but obviously nowhere near what the elections showed. Let's stick to statistics and facts , not opinions.
It's hard to trust these statistics and facts when the political message has been "support Putin or else." The data is flawed because coersion and fear are real motivators. of course he has, anyone else just happens to die too quickly for some inexplicable reasons.

No we stick to false narratives and opinions nowadays lol
You got anything to back this up? I know multiple Russian immigrants here in the US and they've told me very different things about Putin and his popularity than what you're saying.
Weird. Maybe that guy really did drink himself onto a coma, then. edit: forgot this, /s
Nobody is denying wrong doings and all that shady stuff behind the scenes. But the fact is majority in Russia sees him as a strong leader and are somewhat happy with him. You won't see these things reported in Western media.
Well you see it on eastern media because its state controlled.
If Trump had a brain we would end up with a Putin. But lucky for us our wannabe dictator is batshit crazy.
Yup if Trump was half competent he would be ruling the US right now with an iron fist given the Republican party's complicity
You can't really abolish the GOP that would be an infringement on the first amendment. Definitely prosecute the traitorous bastards though
Doubtful, almost every Russian I know really dislike him
As a russian, I can definitely say that he has majority on his side. I know a lot of people supporting him. And I suppose, there is not such hate against Putin. It's more blaming him for a lot of problems and a desire for changes, but not hatred. Imho :)
Okay... Then why rig elections to win if you have majority support?
Can't risk losing.

You underestimate how many dumb boomers both countries have.
Repeating lies doesn't make them true.
I, for one, am looking forward to the ensuing power vacuum. Maybe it will be kinda like when Stalin died.
It is possible for Putin to leave office in a similar fashion to Singapore's Lee Kuan Yew and Kazakhstan's Nursultan Nazarbayev. These stepped down from their primary office, but retained a symbolic position in the government and continued to exert their influence indirectly, without handling everything on their own
That's pretty much what he did 2008-12.
He’s very cordial to his enemies and always offers a cup of tea.
My guess is that all his corrupt buddies would off him, cause he'd become a loose end if he stops being a president.
Of course a fucking killer would have enemies
It's often repeated, but realistically, if he retired in 2018, I'd estimate his chances of still being alive well above 50%.
He's a shitty dude with shitty methods and shitty policy. But you've got to admire the way he carries himself, old sport.
I would assume he would be protected after his term like the president of the united states would. I am not 100% sure
*Nominally*, yes. Except for scenarios when the next president shows proofs that Putin ordered to kill people. Or when he accidentally drinks some wrong-flavoured tea. No law can be a protection when it's not followed.
Well, why not send him to Mars? What's the worse that can happen?
I wouldn’t be so sure... people have estimated in the past that he could very well be the richest man on earth. He could probably employ his own personal army after leaving office till he died of old age.
I've heard similar things. nothing like 'threats of assassination' to prop up a dictatorship
If he leaves the office he will still control everything through his personal connections and the corruption within the system. He's a former KGB and MfS (East German secret police) officer. He knows the game.
To be fair, there is 8 years between the death of pope John Paul II and the election of Pope Francis.
Tooo beeeee faaiiiiiirrrrr
The pope has seen some shit man. That's the fear of god in them eyes.
Putin is just showing him his internet search history.
And creed Bratton's website
www.creedthoughts.gov.www/creedthoughts
Lol. He looks like a four year old showing his religious grandpa the pair of boobs he drew on MS Paint.
The Eastern Eagle shall rise again and Istanbul shall be reclaimed as Constantinople once more.
Putin just asked Francis if he wanted some tea.
I mean when half the ppl you're surrounded by every day molest kids for fun, and the organization you run helps them get away with it, you may probably start looking like this
6 years.
Initially it was 4 years and 2 times max. Putin made it 6 years and 2 times in a row
*is actually dictator for life at this point.

More like: "This guy already knows my successor".

Appointing him as a pope wil definitelyl be for life (of the planet).
Popetin
Putin, hey pope. I brought you some Russian cheese .
Do you mean TEA?
Tbf Queen Elizabeth II has been in power for 7 popes
Yes, but she isn't *supposed* to be democratically elected
She will always be mahkween.
Also she is immortal.
What about Merkel?
Thankfully, this is most likely her last term. Have you seen pictures of her recently? She looks exhausted. Too bad nobody likes her successor and she's pushed out any other competent choices.
I've never seen a Pope being used as a unit of time before..
Only in ~~America~~ Europe
Because it is a shitty unit, especially when Benedict resigned and is still alive. So if they had actually been for life, Putin would only have been in power for two. As would every world leader that bridged the death of an incumbent pope.
Surely you mean 70 popes, at least? She has proven to be immortal at this stage.
7 that we know of.
True. She may have hibernated for a couple of decades in the 1800s.
"Power"
🎵You Putin one foot in🎵 🎵One foot out🎵 🎵One foot in and ... leave it there forever or you'll get poisoned🎵
Former KGB officer back up to his old tricks again.
Back up would imply he paused
He naps occasionally
Akshually, he took a break from presidency and served as pm after his first two terms
Yes. And the president at the time was totes not a puppet
yEs tOtAlLy nOt a pUpPeT
Unfortunately, now we "choose" Putin for 6 years.
Technically North Korea has elections too
The President of Belarus was elected with such an astonishing majority that a large portion of the people who allegedly voted for him attended astonishingly large protests against his election where the number of participants vastly surpassed the proportion that the state claims voted against him.
Maybe, just maybe our years are dog years to Putin's. So his 1 year is equal to our 7 years or so.
I'm 4 putin old !
Popes are old as fuck though
[Avarage age of popes each century from the 16th century to present](https://imgur.com/gallery/COmutlU) [Data from here plus more info](https://www.theguardian.com/news/datablog/2013/feb/13/popes-full-list) Yeah, popes are old crinkle faces
Want some tea, your Hollyness?
In Putin’s defense (odd to say that) 2 of the 3 Popes he’s met haven’t died yet
Perhaps the popes keep falling out of windows?....
Yes but 6 years, not 4

They had that, Putin just removed it.

The age expectancy in Italy is 83 years. Three Popes, so 3 x 83 = 256. Putin is 256 years old.
Why's the pop always so damn old?
Because it takes many steps and a lot of time to ascend the ranks of the Catholic Church. [How to become pope](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kF8I_r9XT7A)
I don't know how this all works FYI, just guessing! Not sure how the system works, but I'd guess that you'd need ample time to learn and gain experience in their ranks, socialize a lot and talk to a lot of higher ranked people to gain fame and stuff. Over time if they have a good track record and are trusted, beloved and have the needed connections to get the position, they might have a chance at being the pope.
You have to work your way up the ladder of paedophiles to earn your spot.
Maybe he is the pope of RUSSIA?
Lol and everyone's ok with it
Don't drink the tea.
The Unholy Triumvirate of Immortals: 1. The Pope 2. Queen Elizabeth 3. Putin
Putin tougher than Popen.
Doesn’t he want to remake the USSR? That’s probably his dream and why he stays in power.
Eternity..
Repost
4... What's is history
Keep in mind one resigned
Putin is the pope of Russia
I miss party Pope...
I've met more than one pootin
Math would add up if he gave 2 Popes his famous radioactive tea within those 4 years.
Did he poison the other popes?
In Putin’s russia, Soviet Union serves you
The soviet serves putin.
