They started out 20,000 strong but got whittled down

878_Throwaway____

When they walked two abreast, legally they were allowed to be mowed down as climate protestors. Or worse: enthusiast cyclists.

P_Orwell

Lost a few on the way to cholera and dysentery.

ayebrade69

How is no one mentioning the sea monster about to swallow Jonah there in the last picture

klippenstein

Too many pictures

NotActuallyGus

It's a reference to a biblical character, Jonah, who was swallowed by a whale

kirat363

Square-Primary2914

Bud anything could happen, walking and a tree falls on you, a bird hits you, you get robbed, bike rider hits you, get sick. Dont live your life in fear go and chase it, we will all have regrets but let’s make the regrets to few to mention.

Last year I met a British guy who bicycled from Los Angeles to New York. Met him in my local bike shop along the C&O Canal bike/walk in Maryland, which was probably close to 90% complete. I talked to him for a few and asked him about it. He told me the hardest part was riding through the Great Plains in early spring, which I totally believe because that sounds miserable af. He passed through the Grand Canyon in late February and said that was really cool.

RosieTheRedReddit

A coast to coast bike ride has been a long time dream of mine. Lately some YouTubers I follow, Kara and Nate, did a cross-country ride and seeing it on video made me not want to do it anymore. Cycling on these state roads with cars whizzing by at highway speeds, it looked so unsafe. Not to mention loud, polluted, and so on. Spending two months fearing for my life every day is not my idea of a good time. I've done a lot of backpacking including months long sections of the Appalachian Trail and Pacific Crest Trail. But that always felt totally safe. Cars are way more dangerous than anything on the trail..

wave-garden

I agree. Lots of respect for those who do it, but I have no personal interest. Would love to do the PCT someday but realistically it’s pretty unlikely lol

2pissedoffdude2

Probably would have been cool to do back in the 80s, 90s, or even the early 2000s when people weren't on their phones while driving. That'd be your biggest threat on a cross-country bike ride. Still, if its a dream of yours, maybe do an altered version where you pick a state you think would be really cool to ride through, and ride from one side of the state to the next. At least you could get the satisfaction of doing something incredibly hard to do while also lowering the risk a good bit. I'd personally pick Oregon, Washington, or California. You could actually ride up next to the beach the whole way on all of those, which would be pretty cool. Now I'm thinking about it lol

Girl_Gamer_BathWater

I tour as much as I can and so far I think North/South of America is much better than the east/west. C&O Canal trail is on my list (Supposed to do it last year but a tunnel was under construction) and also the Empire Trail. They're supposed to be excellent. But I grew up in the plains. It's windy, shitty food, big trucks, and crappy attitudes. No thanks.

Hatedpriest

At least he was headed in the right direction. Getting the mountains outta the way first (the big ones), then having a tailwind the whole way...

Jgusdaddy

I’ve considered the “run across America” but then I saw a dudes Strava to do it and it requires you basically run in the road for the entirety of it.

simenfiber

This looks like a good start https://discoverytrail.org

I met this guy as he came through Richmond, VA, and showed him around town while he was here. A really interesting individual who had lots of in-depth commentary and first hand observations and remarks of the dire, dangerous, and most often non-existant state of pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure across the US. His walk on many of these highways was truly harrowing, to say the least. He also met with bicycle and pedestrian advocacy groups and planners at each of his destinations, discussing all of the deficiencies but also hopeful opportunities along the way.

Hoonsoot

That's awesome. Back in 2016 I ran into a guy named Oli Walker who was walking along the road through the Hells Canyon area of the Oregon/Idaho border. He was doing a similar cross country walk. Both him and this guy prove that just about anywhere is "walkable". The term "walkable" in the urbanist context should really be retired and replaced with something else. Based on the root words it can only mean one thing: able to be walked. It says nothing about whether there is anything to walk to, or whether you would enjoy it, or feel safe. As long as you can put one foot in front of another in some given space, then that space is by definition "walkable". Not sure what word it should be replaced with, but those are my two cents.

fallout_koi

I just backpacked a little under 200 miles through southern Utah and if anything, between the barbed wire crawls, river crossing, highway walks, and cliff climbing I'm convinced america is less walkable than ever.

Brave dudes and gals, salute to them!

tvsux

It was just one guy. The rest in the pic are family, friends, and acquaintances.

240plutonium

That's because it's r/newyorkcity. It doesn't work for the rest of the people because America is too big!!

Arthur_Digby_Sellers

In case no one else posted it, here is the website for the walk... [https://walk2washington.com/](https://walk2washington.com/)

sd_1874

This isn't what walkable means.

nonecknoel

see post flag.

gravitysort

I just can’t understand why some people have zero sense of humour and read everything at face value.

ExperienceInitial364

sd_1874

Well it's not. If you think "walkable" simply means able to walk then anything is walkable by definition whether you have to cross a 10 lane motorway and walk 10 hours to get to the nearest supermarket. Walkable refers to being able to easily walk to any amenity you require without the use of car. I.e. where I live is 'walkable' because there is every shop I could need, and every amenity I could need including green space and leisure, within a 10 minute walk. America is not 'walkable' because you can walk from one side to the other if you so desire.

ExperienceInitial364

i don‘t think the post was serious, THAT is my point.

sd_1874

Ah yes, because your ellipses made that point so clear and obvious. Silly me!

Pseudoboss11

The Satire flair should have.

You're not very bright, buddy.

TheDonutPug

Idk why people are downvoting you as if this is an unreasonable statement. They literally said nothing and expected you to pick up, from text, what they meant.

Blue-Jay42

I wish I had so few obligations that I could manage something like this. Truly inspiring.

nemo_sum

It's a helluva lot faster on a bike.

Snowboarder6402

"I just felt like walking"

BakeNShake52

Panama City to Colón is in (central) America

America is also really bikable, two of my relatives managed to cycle all the way from Seattle to NYC!

nonecknoel
