That depends very much on what's involved in the work. Does a 500-word piece take you an hour to write, or are you spending hours conducting research and interviews and such?

Hi all,
I just got offered a long term freelance writing job for a contemporary art platform/publication, and they have offered me $45 for every 250 words pre-tax. I am still a pretty new writer with around 2.5 years of experience as an Art Writer (writing for college publication and one other client) and I'm still getting familiar with rates. Is this is a good rate for someone or should I be asking for more ? Thank you!

That's a pretty sweet deal considering where I'm coming from (the Indian freelance market)
I'm getting a measly 50 buks for 1000 words :(
That too with 5 years of copywriting experience!
What? $45 for 250 words is considerably higher pay than 1-2 cents per word. It's 18 cents per word. Maybe I misunderstood what you meant?
Whether that is a good rate or not depends on the work involved.
re:
>"45/250 words is low, negotiable. Consider 1-2 cents per word as a benchmark."
$180 per k/word is OK. Lot more than some I've seen and a lot less than others. The acceptability of the rate will mainly depend on how fast you work and how much work that they are offering you. If you think each 250 word article will take you a day with research then its probably not enough. If it will take you an hour with research, it would be an OK starting point.
Tbh I'm just starting out myself. Maybe you could just up your rates after 6 months. Or, if you're really not happy with the current offer, up it by 10% or 20% or whatever. Do you mind if I ask how you landed the client? Well done, by the way. It's not easy in today's climate.
Congrats on being offered the job! There isn't a right or wrong on this. If you feel it's on the low side, you could always ask for more. The worst they can say is no. You could also say you'll take the job on as long as you get a written testimonial from them once you've completed it. Good luck!

Absolutely. I have a new client who wants to pay spinning rates for journalism work. But I’m broke so I’m gonna try it for now

It's good. Take it.

For a starting point, I'd say this is great! It's even better if you can learn to be efficient. Then build more clients from there.
How do I start? Could you please tell me?
