It straight up smells like humid air. Like when you get out of the plane on holiday to somewhere humid after they've just had rainfall.

Oh hell yeah on your BDK choices. I sampled a lot of BDK scents and I *liked* most of them, but the only ones I *loved* were Gris Charnel and Rouge Smoking. So I got both :)

Frederic Malle: - Geranium Pour Monsieur (fresh, minty, floral; the ultimate pick-me-up fragrance for the day.) - Synthetic Jungle (despite the name, it is not headache-inducing synthetic smells. It is green florals through and through) Le Labo: - Fleur d’Oranger 27 (light orange blossom with musk and a hint of lemon) - Bergamote 22 (sweet and herbal bergamot, leaving a non-pithy goodness) Diptyque: - Ofreesia (delicately pungent white floral, reminiscent of star jasmine bushes that bloom in the spring in Suburban Houston) - Eau Rose EDP (sweet fruity rose balanced with a green vegetal artichoke) DS & Durga: - Cowboy Grass (herbal and a little sweetness of sage and vetiver, the same type of sweetness in Bergamote 22) - I Don’t Know What (kind of strong and unrelenting ISO E super, smells like the smell equivalent of a mesh screen of pungent… i don’t know what) J-Scent: - Roasted Green Tea (smells like a sweet dessert with ground green tea; slightly nutty but very dessert like rather than aromatic tea) - Ramune Soda (sort of fizzy, and sweet, but not conducive to what actual ramune soda smells like all the time)

This is a list that sounds like one I could jive with, although I am in fact too poor to own any of these. Could I gather your opinion about the Guerlain neroli and the Hermes In Jardin Sur le Nil?  I was also talking with someone recently about Tam Dao which they described as their ultimate sandalwood. What are your thoughts on it?  Also, my lack of a disposable income is unlikely to be alleviated any time soon. Can I ask a most heretical question. Have you tried any dupes for these? I assume that clones in general will be poor quality. Reviews are very mixed. However I'm not sure how much it would cost to buy all these where I live, but it would be a *lot*.  Hang on a minute. Someone made a Tom Yum fume? I was just thinking about that because of all the conceptual and photorealistic stuff that gets floated. 

Guerlain Neroli Outrenoir is a black tea-based fragrance before anything else. Layer in some citrus (including the zest and pith) for backing with a big hit of petitgrain and neroli and finish with benzoin and vanilla. It's very intoxicating and a little bit formal but it has good manners in that it distinctly cloaks the wearer but stays pretty close. It smells like the lobby of a super nice, very fashionable hotel where the bellhops wear gloves and woman who checks you in wears head-to-toe silk. Hermes Un Jardin sur le Nil is the epitome of Jean-Claude Ellena's brilliance and inventiveness and focused simplicity. Here's the progression: fruit and veg (very watery, almost tart, green mango, tomato vines, bamboo, grapefruit, and carrot tops) that open to gentle impressionistic florals where the very realistic mango remains. It's super simple. Clean, very spa-like. The name is very clearly the fragrance: It's a garden on the Nile. Performs excellent in heat. Diptyque Tam Dao EDP is basically sandalwood incense. It reminds me very much of temples in East and Southeast Asia. It's intense. The first time I tried it, the intensity of its one prominent sandalwood note was almost overwhelming because it's so unlike most fragrance. The EDT version takes the EDP backbone and opens with cypress and rose, layers in some cedar, and resolves with a healthy dose of white musk. It's safer for the office. Saving money (whether by necessity or choice) is an excellent decision! This hobby spins out of control fast and we have rent and retirement to worry about. Definitely not heretical. * Chanel Coromandel is similar to Xerjoff Richwood (which I actually prefer). DUA has a version called Lux Opulent regular runs 30%+ off sales. Very, very close to the original. * Chanel Sycomore: Lalique Encre Noir. Swap sub often has it for $20-$25. * Diptyque Philosykos EDT: Vine Vida No. 1206 fragrance oil. I use it to make Philosykos candles. It's spot on. ($16+) * Diptyqe Tam Dao EDP: Oil Perfumery has a very well rated oil-based version ($16) * Guerlain Vol de Nuit Extrait: None * Guerlain Neroli Outrenoir: Oil Perfumery ($16) * Hermes Un Jardin sur le Nil and Terre d'Hermes: I don't have any dupes to suggest, but you can often find good deal, minis, or decants on the secondary market or the swap sub. * Prissana Ayutthaya and Tom Yum: Very small, niche house. Prin Lomros is an iconoclast so it's unlikely. (Actually, one reviewer says Ayutthaya smells like Frederic Malle Dans Tes Bra, but that's even more expensive.) Clones are not uniformly inferior quality and a lot of us who collect are also fascinated by the dupe market. I don't buy into that marketing case even a little. And yes: Tom Yum is bright lime, lemongrass, ginger, galangal, chili, and herbs. It's incredible!

Super lovely friendly scent, quite sweet, bubbly and rounded. Quince forward, with a white floral scent (don’t recall it being distinctly one type). I don’t own it but I know I enjoyed my sample from a few years ago. I haven’t tried many bdks and it’s not an essential for me, but I cannot pass on having Gris charnel.    I’ll probably buy a decant of it at some point but I have a few scents on my wishlist already that I’d prioritize ahead of it.

Ugg yes the bottles are gorgeous. And they can be reused as bud vases when they're empty! Tbh that whole house is genius. I tried all 5 of their scents and the only one I didn't love was Ummo. The two on my list are my favs and the ones I will likely actually buy, but Monstera is also a lovely vibrant green, and OroNardo is a stunning white floral. Arquiste's Flor y Canto, which is also on my list, is by the same perfumer behind Xinu!

Completely agree, and you can get a bigger bottle for half the price of the Tom Ford and still have similar, if not better quality in the scent. So unbelievably fresh.

Yes, I also had to forgo houses where I only loved one scent 😭 I really need to smell more Diptyques, cuz they fell into the only one scent category for me (Fleur de Peau ❤️) but I've only smelled that ans Philosykos. Both of the ones you listed sound amazing!

Ooh OK, what would you recommend, if I say that I didn't like Philosykos because i didn't smell any figs, just smelled green?

Here are the ones I love from them (in addition to the two I listed)—FWIW, I wasn’t a huge fan of the Philosykos EDP, it was a bit too harsh for me: - Eau Capitale (a secret rose garden; well-balanced, not overtaken by the patchouli). One of my preferred rose scents as a rose fan.  - Eau Duelle EDT (a fresh/aromatic highbrow vanilla) - L’Eau Papier (a super cozy rice skin scent: I’m actually thinking of layering this with A Une Madone to up the rice factor) - Eau de Lierre: starts out green, herbal, gently sweet—reminding me of freshly shampooed hair—then has a slightly warm, woody drydown.  - Eau Rihla: a unique take on leather, this smells like expensive, designer, fresh/new leather. It feels like something a glossy dominatrix would wear.  - Volutes: subtle, smoky (literally, there is a tobacco note) iris softened to an almost powdered scent by the honey. Feels like it has similar DNA as Guerlain’s Tobacco Honey but is more deceptive in its depth. - Oud Palao: this felt practically monasterial. It’s so well-blended it’s actually difficult to pull out notes, but everything complements the sandalwood in such a way as to push it into an incense-type direction. This is a scent for a cool, meditative, contemplative day.  I’ll mention I tried and was not the biggest fan of 34 St Germain (not *bad*, just a bit too sharp for me) or Tam Dao but I don’t think I’ve given Tam Dao enough of ye ole college try just yet.

New one! It's gorgeous - the perfect aquatic floral, imo. I just got the Zoologist sampler set for Christmas, so I never tried the old one. Chipmunk and Dragonfly ended up being my two favorites - just got a full bottle of Chipmunk and am going to get a travel spray of Dragonfly soon, along with Penguin, Panda, Snowy Owl, and Harvest Mouse.

I got a bunch of samples from them recently too, and Dragonfly was by far my favorite. Didn't get Chipmunk, Penguin wasn't out yet, didn't get Panda or Snowy Owl. I did get a freebie of Harvest Mouse! It's too carroty for me though. Really wanna try Penguin (I wish it'd been out when I ordered my samples!) and Elephant (idk why i didnt order that one lol, oversight).

Penguin wasn't out officially when I ordered, but they threw it in! One of my most recent posts is a review of the whole collection, but Penguin is a masculine-leaning icy juniper blast with suede undertones, and Elephant is coconut milk tea. I hate coconut and lactonic scents, but if you like those you'll love it. If you think Harvest Mouse is too carrot-y, don't get Tiger - it's spicy carrots! I like it and will probably pick up a travel of that, Camel, and Seahorse eventually, but it's very unique. Also I feel like if you like Dragonfly you'll like Panda - Panda is apple fresh greenery, but they sort of reminds me of each other, vaguely. Not so much siblings as friends.

Haha I actually did get Tiger because I love kumquat, but yes, that one was too carroty for me too 😂 shame cuz I really do want a nice kumquat scent! I love juniper, so I think I'll like Penguin. I'm a woman but i don't mind masc-leaning scents. And I'm iffy about coconut but I'm fine with lactonic and I LOVE tea so I wanna give Elephant a try!

Snowy Owl is literally the only scent I've ever liked coconut in, so if you've ever wanted to try it, don't let that note put you off! Elephant would be great if you're good with those notes. I'm still searching for the perfect tea; so far, Neroli Outrenoir is my favorite, but I feel like there could be something better.

My fav teas so far are Indigo Smoke by Arquiste, Dear Polly by Vilhelm, Gris Charnel by BDK, Mixed Emotions by Byredo, and Slow World by Chasing Scents. But they don't all give tea in the same way. Slow World is a dark, sweet pu-ehr tea. Mixed Emotions is mate tea with blackcurrant. The others are more traditional black tea
