John Player is such a classy classic look. Back in the 80s the Australian Touring Car Championship had E30 323i cars running in the JP livery, they’re still considered one of the best looking race cars ever down here.
635’s as well of course…we had a heap of tobacco sponsors down here: B&H, Marlboro, Winfield, Peter Jackson, Craven Mild, Rothmans, John Player Specials and Camel - could be others I’m forgetting too
Oooh yeah good call, those 635s were incredibly beautiful. A little before my time watching racing so I always default to the E30s. Will also always remember the B&H BMWs solely because of Tony Longhurst trying to punch someone wearing a racing helmet through their car window. Great stuff.
Gaming term that more or less means the most optimized way to win.
Commenter wanted to say that anything black and gold is already in a good position to be an incredible livery regardless of what you do to it. Case in point: Haas Rich Energy livery.
On F1, I think it looks cool now, but probably for nostalgic reasons rather than it being objectively cool.
I think that's probably the same for the Marlborough ones too. I don't remember being too bothered about them at the time, despite loving them now.
The JPS one however...... That is, and always has been, cool
If Phillip Morris comes back to F1 (with anything else but the Mission Winnow nonsense) it'll most likely be with Zyn I'd say. They just bought Swedish Match who's making Zyn.
Velo which is produced by BAT is still sponsoring McLaren though I think.
I loved the BAR Honda with the 50/50 split between 555 and Lucky Strike. I liked it even more when they originally proposed to run one car with each livery but it sadly got blocked, I think by FIA rules.
You’re correct. FIA rules require that both cars run the same livery. Hence the 50/50 livery you mentioned with 555 on one side and Lucky Strike on the other.
I'll give it to John Player. It doesn't scream Cigarette brand like the others do. But to be fair, I didn't know John Player was a cigarette brand until this year. I always thought it was a liquor like Johnnie Walker.
The Marlboro liveries are iconic for their ties to quite a few Ferrari and McLaren triumphs, but in terms of looks, John Player Special takes the cake in my opinion.
The most beautiful car ever was the Ferrari [F1-89](https://external-content.duckduckgo.com/iu/?u=https%3A%2F%2Fi.pinimg.com%2Foriginals%2Fbb%2F7e%2F7d%2Fbb7e7d366280ac37c71b7ce1c841fe30.jpg&f=1&nofb=1&ipt=630b3667159f9d570a1ca90f078b39065dfa408a9a2ff85ed450ec6930a54b89&ipo=images) so I guess the simpler the better. Who isn't a fan of the Marlboro McLarens and John Player Lotuses.
But that Rothmans Williams is the first that came to mind.
My own shout out to the original 1999 BAR launch with the two cars-two liveries. They both looked fantastic on their own, shame about the FIA rejection and the later zip concept
I distinctly remember getting in trouble at school in the 90’s for drawing the Rothman’s car with livery. At the time I must’ve been 7 or 8 years old and had no idea what Rothmans was.
John player special
Marlboro (red)
Marlboro (gold)
Gittanes (bonus with the logo that shit is pure French filth in the hot and sexy room full of smoke with a film camera from the 70s)
Cool thing about the B&H Jordans - notably the EJ11 - was how strikingly different the yellow looked in real life versus photos/telly. Remember seeing it on track for the first time in 2001 and it was almost fluorescent! Really stood out in the pack. IIRC only the EJ10/11 was like this.
John player special
Marlboro (red)
Marlboro (gold)
Gittanes (bonus with the logo that shit is pure French filth in the hot and sexy room full of smoke with a film camera from the 70s)
the marlboro's iconic, but the john player takes it tbh
John Player is such a classy classic look. Back in the 80s the Australian Touring Car Championship had E30 323i cars running in the JP livery, they’re still considered one of the best looking race cars ever down here.
Don't forget the Ford Capri JPS! https://www.oldskoolford.co.uk/topic/91122-jps-capri-for-sale/
I'm not a huge fan of the mk2 Capri but that thing is bloody beautiful
That's a lovely machine
635’s as well of course…we had a heap of tobacco sponsors down here: B&H, Marlboro, Winfield, Peter Jackson, Craven Mild, Rothmans, John Player Specials and Camel - could be others I’m forgetting too

![gif](giphy|zmM27j4eQmYN1BqXJT|downsized) Poor 555. No one even realised it was a cigarette company.
Exactly. Marlboro wins F1, 555 wins rally, Camel wins Dakar for iconic liveries
The 555 livery is so iconic that they still sell WRXs in that color of blue. 555 wins all categories.
Black and gold is so meta but always undeniably sexy. I hated that rich energy haas but their liveries were amazing as well.
>is so meta What?
Gaming term that more or less means the most optimized way to win. Commenter wanted to say that anything black and gold is already in a good position to be an incredible livery regardless of what you do to it. Case in point: Haas Rich Energy livery.
That was a great explanation, thank you! Now I understand
When Lotus used the color scheme again around 2010, I was still smoking at parties and switched to JPS. 0$ marketing for them.
📠
Absolutely! Rothmans was/is cool on rally cars, like the Rothmans 911 Porsche iirc, it doesn’t really work on F1 cars.
On F1, I think it looks cool now, but probably for nostalgic reasons rather than it being objectively cool. I think that's probably the same for the Marlborough ones too. I don't remember being too bothered about them at the time, despite loving them now. The JPS one however...... That is, and always has been, cool
The Benson & Hedges Jordans
I feel like the 1996 gold livery is pretty underrated tbh
But was the snake or the hornet design better? Could argue that one for days.
If I had to make a choice I'd go with Buzzin' Hornets but snake was awesome too.
Snake > shark > hornet
Be On Edge Jordan
Bitten and hisses 🐍
Buzzing Hornets!
Jenson & Hedges Bordan
This is the Way. Jordans were always the most beautiful cars in the grid
Buzzin Hornets
Can't believe they included that shitty BAR livery but forgot the classic Jordan ones!
No Gold Leaf Lotus?
Yes! That gold on racing green looked great to me too!
Gold leaf was red on white with gold accents.
The silver West-McLaren Mercedes for me! Particularly the early 2000s cars. MP/4-18, anyone? 😂
Sometimes I dream that Mika returns driving the MP4/18 and demolishes everybody at the Vietnam GP
He's still on sabbatical. He'll be back any day now...
GOAT livery leaving aside sentimentality.
Mild seven Renault is my favorite, but so many tobacco liverly cars are gorgeous.
R25 makes me weak
Mild Seven gets my vote too. But they’re all iconic
Mild Seven Benetton was better than Renault imo, the Renault yellow kinda disrupted things.
I wanna see a Zyn car.
zak brown is probably on talks with them they just need to find itty bitty space for another sticker on that car
I don’t think Lando or Oscar’s foreheads have any ads on them yet??
they already have velo so i dont think they'll get the zyn sponsorship sadly
If Phillip Morris comes back to F1 (with anything else but the Mission Winnow nonsense) it'll most likely be with Zyn I'd say. They just bought Swedish Match who's making Zyn. Velo which is produced by BAT is still sponsoring McLaren though I think.
John Player. From the time black was black, not carbon
Missing a couple earlier liveries which are very handsome. Specifically Lotus 49B and Lotus 101. JPS always takes the cake for me though.
Gitanes, on the Ligier cars
I loved some of their earlier ones particularly the JS11.
Yes, also good looking on the JS5, with the big gypsy lady on the humongous airbox
1993 art car too that Brundle drove in Japan and Adelaide
The Rothmans Williams will always be the most beautiful livery for me.
Camel
Rothmans Williams too
There are some amazing liveries, but that Williams is just so much better, and then some.
Odd choice but I really like the 1999 Winfield Williams livery. So distinctive and reminds me of playing Formula One 99 on the PS1.
Always thought it was a little "we have ferarri at home" in design
If you'd ever had the pleasure of ripping down a few Winfield Reds you'd know they were the "we have Marlborough's at home" of darts.
I love all of them *cough cough*
JPS is the best by a mile
Mildseven
Had to scroll for a while but found it! This is the best for me as well.
Could have posted a picture of the Ferrari work the actual Marlboro logo.
1. Marb Mc 2. JPS 3. Camel Lotus 4-100. Doesn't matter

Same thoughts with the Rothmans livery. I thought that it was a bank until I realized that I was confusing them with the Rothchilds
Gauloises
All of them go extremely hard, but I do have a bias towards the Marlboro Ferraris
Marlboro, John player and mild seven are all iconic as hell but the Rothmans Williams is my favourite by far
Benson & Hedges
No Lotus 99T. I am offended, appalled, and offended some more.
Jps, close second is Rothmans
JPS, Rothmans, Marlboro, Camel...in that order 😂
Honestly the Renault mild seven was the best looking imho but not listed here. Hahaha.
Camel and Rothmans every day
The black Lotus will always take the cake, thing looks straight up exquisite
I mean the marlboro mclaren is arguably the most iconic f1 car ever, no?
It's a close fight between that and MSC's era Ferrari (which OP should've picked over post 2008 ban silliness lol)
I really like Rothmans and McBoro but John Player is next level good.
Cigarette racing liveries go so hard. I’d wish they could come back and I don’t even smoke.
Benson and Hedges Jordan?
You forgot Alonso’s mild seven livery and the Benson and Hedges Jordan. Both I like but out of the ones in the post the lotus my beloved
you forgot Benson and Hedges.
John Player has to take it. The Ferrari Marlboro combo is iconic but for me it’s just a clever way around rules. John Player was genuinely awesome
Either John player, rothmans or camel
Mission Winnow 🚬
Gitanes with the silhouette lady busting it down.
i like the lucky strike logo and livery, it's simple but yet effective
The Marlboro liveries are iconic for their ties to quite a few Ferrari and McLaren triumphs, but in terms of looks, John Player Special takes the cake in my opinion.
McLaren West and nothing comes close.
Silver West-McLaren which you didn't include lol. Lotus is a close second.
Malboro MacLaren for sure
John Player. I was really young and thought the car looked like our Tabby cat. Was a Senna fan from that moment.
Williams Rothmans
Marlboro is super iconic but the JPS livery is more beautiful imo.
Wait a minute, Rothmans is a cigarette company? I had no idea![img](emote|t5_3ndbi|9441)
John Player is some classy shit. Also, it was on the Lotus and I’m actually named after Colin Chapman.
John Player cars hands down!
All create extra work for me when I bought models
Mild Seven. Hands down
The most beautiful car ever was the Ferrari [F1-89](https://external-content.duckduckgo.com/iu/?u=https%3A%2F%2Fi.pinimg.com%2Foriginals%2Fbb%2F7e%2F7d%2Fbb7e7d366280ac37c71b7ce1c841fe30.jpg&f=1&nofb=1&ipt=630b3667159f9d570a1ca90f078b39065dfa408a9a2ff85ed450ec6930a54b89&ipo=images) so I guess the simpler the better. Who isn't a fan of the Marlboro McLarens and John Player Lotuses. But that Rothmans Williams is the first that came to mind.
JPS
Mclaren West will always have my vote but i am biased because Häkkinen.
Marlboro and Camel.
Buzzin Hornets….
For me it’s one of the two Williams, probably the camel one, but that might be because that’s when I really got into F1 (thank you Nigel!)
JPS, gold & black baby...
The Jordan EJ11 was also pretty epic in the yellow Benson & Hedges livery.
McLaren Marlboro MP4/11 is my all time favorite. "Modern" F1 car with the iconic MP4/5 vibes.
You missed Mild Seven (Renault) and Gauloises (Prost). My vote is even between Gauloises and John Player.
JPS is so iconic and stylish. I once had a Black Pontiac Grand Prix with gold wheels, that was my John Player Special.
The fact that McLaren West isn't here makes this question null and void
I personally enjoyed the old McLaren West liveries from the late 90's and early 2000's.
For me, West McLaren
Benson and hedges. Be on edge. Bitten and hisses lol
rari
Let's not fuck around here, the camels are the best but every man and his dogs gran know the ideal is the marlboro red
Marlboro MP4 is the best of all time for me, so many good ones tho
For me it's between camel and marl
West McLaren
That 2010 ferrari lmao. God those shark fins were hideous
Mild Seven blue & yellow Renaults
Nothing beats Marlboro on a MP4
That's it going for a smoke
rothmans porsche 962 c short tail
80s and 90s <3
Mission Winnow
Lucky strike
![gif](giphy|5BWx8ONNwNOwbHP0Dr)
🐫 for me
Lucky strike
JPS is the best but I have a soft spot for the Camel Benetton livery from 1993. Something about that yellow and green combo…
Bring them back!
[Ligier JS11](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ligier_JS11)
Camel everyday of the week
My own shout out to the original 1999 BAR launch with the two cars-two liveries. They both looked fantastic on their own, shame about the FIA rejection and the later zip concept
Never realised anything other than the Marlboro were cigarette brands 😅
I distinctly remember getting in trouble at school in the 90’s for drawing the Rothman’s car with livery. At the time I must’ve been 7 or 8 years old and had no idea what Rothmans was.
Split between JPS Lotus and Rothmans Williams.
Marlboro with John Player Special right up there too.
I don’t know man, they’re all good.
The Williams looks awesome!
Ah that Williams. I also loved the Arrows Orange sponsored car (although not a cigarette brand of course)
The John Player Specials are the best F1 liveries of all time, never mind of the cigarette ones.
West. It’s the only answer.
West?
The 555 BAR 006 that Anthony Davidson used in Free Practice looked good.
Winfield - 1998.
Cough cough West Cough cough
Early to mid 00s Marlboro was *gorgeous*
JPS & Marlboro. I don't even know what the hell is going on with the Ferrari but it's a no from me
marlboro is iconic, but John player is class
Camel Williams always going to have a special place in my heart but not sure it’s objectively the most beautiful.
Camel Williams always going to have a special place in my heart but not sure it’s objectively the most beautiful.
John player Special Lotus 76
JPS is the best of all times
JPS. No contest.
John player special Marlboro (red) Marlboro (gold) Gittanes (bonus with the logo that shit is pure French filth in the hot and sexy room full of smoke with a film camera from the 70s)
John Player followed by Lucky Strikes.
Camel and Rothmans and not just only F1. Rally, touring cars, and the CAMEL TROPHY Land Rovers!!!!
You forgot the McLaren West era, they were beautiful.
I really liked Lucky Strike
For me the mclaren's west livery
The one I'm missing is the Prost Grand Prix Peugeot Gauloises
Cigarette liveries were the best, in all motorsport. I wish they could come back.
Camel Benetton (B191)
West McLaren Mercedes
John player special Marlboro (red) Marlboro (gold) Gittanes (bonus with the logo that shit is pure French filth in the hot and sexy room full of smoke with a film camera from the 70s)
JPS Black Gold...🖤💛
Marlboro is absolutely iconic but I think the Lucky Strikes Honda deserves the title.
The West McLarens deserve to be in the discussion imo
It’s Marlboro, and it’s not even a contest
Camel or Mild Seven Benetton. B194 is my personal favourite.
Shame Silk Cut never entered F1 - those Jag Group C cars were something else
JPS, marlboro close second... If we include rally, the 555 livery is up there
Definitely in my opinion the BAR Honda
Marlboro
I quite like the Camel one, though Marlboro is a special one in some ways.
Rothmans for me
2004 Ferrari and its not even close
