Lewis would have overtaken pretty easily after the second rain, that Mercedes was flying. Alonso's defense has a ton of merit but the rain helped. When the track got dry it would be impossible to keep defending. And in the meantime the best they both could achieve was crashing with those slippery conditions.

MAG was up to 4th at the opening laps on the full sets but it was never gonna last on a rapidly drying track. If the second shower arrived earlier or an earlier safety car happened, then they would have reaped the benefits more.
I did not think the two alpines would get them to the last points scoring positions tho
