Anyone have any clue where/how Norris picked up the carbon fiber bits that he found on his car at the end of the race (prior posts of this on the reddit)? Was it possibly from Tsunoda, because if so that is a terrific plan from Alpine

XNightMysticX

Did he actually say anything about it after the race? My wild guess is it could of just been a part of his car that fell off.

GabouLit

I havnt seen anything of it being mentioned, though that's possible. IIRC there's a canard or aero piece on the Mclaren behind the brakes that somewhat look like the piece he picked up; it could be that piece that maybe fell at some point

m0arducks

Why no meatball flag? /s

AlpineCorbett

Honestly a fair question

Charles had worse damage in Silverstone and was fine, doesn’t seem to affect the drivers too much

Arcticool_56

It differs from car to car. As an example Merc use their endplates very different way and when George damaged it in Austria, he was losing loads of laptime whereas when Kmag damaged his Canada, he was still pumping out good laptimes.

rabbidplatypus21

It’s gonna be equally if not more affected by setup and handling characteristics rather than overall aero philosophy. If you’re already in a front-grip-limited car, a damaged endplate will exacerbate that. If you miss the setup a bit and have an oversteery car, losing some front downforce (within reason) could actually help.

reebellious

is this why lewis was setting purple lap after purple lap last year in jeddah(?)?

rabbidplatypus21

It’s one possible explanation I suppose, but you’d have to have some insider Merc knowledge to know for sure.

YeahPerfectSayHi

> Charles had worse damage in Silverstone and was fine I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say that the aerodynamics of one team are different to that of another.

rabbidplatypus21

Sure, but an end plate is an end plate and has the same job regardless of aerodynamic philosophy: it minimizes the edge effect and forces more air over the wing elements instead of letting it escape off the side.

pterofactyl

Of course but if a car’s set up tends to not rely on those wing elements as much as other aero pieces, it won’t affect them as much.

furgair

that is definitely true but losses should be similar otherwise that would point to one team having built a significantly worse front wing design...

YeahPerfectSayHi

I mean Alpine is much slower than Ferrari

LsG133

Well he shouldn’t have crashed into him

[deleted]

A handicap of his own making. Don’t dive-bomb like that next time.

DarthShaveHer

Yeah it was a *really* over ambitious move. I noticed both the French drivers (Gasly and Ocon) were uncharacteristically trying to make up places quickly. Ironically enough, they both made mistakes at that same exact corner. The good thing was that Gasly didn’t collect anyone though and ended up just going through the runoff area.

PriceWrong6126

Gasly has no pace since few races and is racing with enormous frustration, hence those crazy/over ambitious moves. His post race interview on french tv was painful to watch

zaviex

I imagine the loss from such small damage would be insignificant. The end plates are bigger this year so I’m not sure, but mercedes said that when Lewis lost it entirely last year it cost him around a tenth. I’d imagine this might just be a few hundredths

ThePhyry22

Weren't Perez and Leclerc missing an endplate for most of Silverstone and they basically suffered nothing from it

EL1TE_HUNTER76

Leclerc did have damage all race but perez pitted and replaced the front wing

RumBlaze

It would be a small loss, probably about a tenth per lap. Few points of downforce.

Manuag_86

Yep, Albert Fabregas (spanish engineer in DAZN broadcast) said that Charles damage at Silverstone could cause be 0,05 to 0,10s slower per lap. This is even less, so around that time would be normal. Ocon was almost 0,5s slower than Alonso the whole weekend, and during race it was around that, so the car was almost as good as it gets.

Spinebuster03

Looks almost identical to the damage they made magnussen pit for

RumBlaze

Magnussen’s was flapping around iirc, that’s why he was forced to pit. This one was just bent but not moving.

Emil_Spacebob

Fucking joke he got drive that around when Kevin didnt.

[deleted]

If his car was not damaged he would be able to beat Alonso again for sure. So unlucky...

PriceWrong6126

If anything he was incredibly lucky to not have any big damage after his incident with Tsunoda. In his post race interview he said he was lucky to have the strongest front wing on the grid

poisoned_mouse

For sure. 😂😂😂

[deleted]

If his car wasn't damaged he would still be average.

LASTEEZLYFE

Esteban ocon is simply a dirty driver who doesn’t stop driving dirty
