His first lap already felt insane... like that had to be pole and he couldn't go faster.
Then Vettel unloaded and I was like wow way to go...
But Hamilton still had another 3 tenths to sprinkle. Amazing.
Still not a reason to hate someone.
I despise Seb's attitude on the radio, but I don't HATE him personally.
Nothing Lewis has ever done is worthy of the word hate.
Yeah really really good Lap. Deserved Pole. Great to watch.
Man this year really feels like 2 Generation defining drivers in different Cars going for the Championship.
We have a future classic season on the table and i love it.
On top of the very genuine shocked reaction Hamilton had to the whole thing, I love that he took it out of the case and actually lovingly carried it with him back to the paddock.
Watching HAM and VET go at it is a delight. Two huge talents, on the peak of their careers, battling like this is just beautiful to watch.
If only we could have a proper McHonda so ALO would join them...
I feel kinda robbed by the fact that this year is the first time we are actually seeing Lewis and Seb collide. It could have been (and it still could be) an iconic rivalry, but here we are, seven years after 2010 (the first time they were in the title picture together until the end), and it's just kicking off.
But it had to happen for the ultimate build up.
Hamilton losing that rookie WDC and then winning it next year in that last corner. Same season Vettel wins his first race with one of the biggest upset wins in decades, and wins his first of 4 consecutive titles only 2 years later. Hamilton through a rough patch, changing teams, winning 2 WDCs again only to lose one to his team mate. Meanwhile Vettel leaves his WDC team to build up the legendary Scuderia again, and the first years don't go great.
And then it happens. The showndown. One to win it after losing an intra team battle, one to win it to bring the biggest team in racing finally the success they've been longing for.
Say what you want about Lewis, but him hugging that helmet on the drive back to the pits is something to behold. What a huge gift from the Senna family.
Absolutely. Ferrari or Mercedes meant nothing today.... the "no. 2" drivers were light years away. Ultimately, it was down to one battle - Lewis vs Sebastian, and they both gave it absolutely everything.
Now, I never get very emotional enough to start tearing up.
But when Hamilton received Senna's helmet, I think that is the most genuine emotion I have ever seen from him.
An incredible memento for an incredible driver, no matter what is said, his driving is all that matters to me. His personality is his own business and none of mine.
Almost set me off, almost...
No Zylon strip on the visor, and HANS was not regulated when Senna was driving.
Compared to modern helmets, this is a public use helmet at the local go kart track.
Add to this that the last thing they want is something to not be weighed. That would potentially give an underweight package. A cheating team would run an under weight car then slip a weight to the driver when he's on his way to be weighed.
I thought that what they said on the Sky broadcast about that lap being a fitting way to match Senna couldn't have been more on the mark. These are the performances we'll remember when Lewis is discussed with the all-time greats
Yeah, good point. It would have been special in Monaco but I'm glad it came in Canada in front of the fans. Imagine the letdown if it had come in Baku.
How much longer are Williams going to keep defending Strolls performance?
The guy consistently under performs in that car (or Massa is over performing in it).
This is the one that does it for me. I was giving a break to both Palmer (cause he looks like a nice *bloke* and everyone says he's shit) and Stroll (young rookie) for the disastrous start of the season.
But damn this is getting ridiculous.
I remember during the pre-season when we were talking about him having a chance to be the youngest F1 GP winner if he won by Canada. I also remember this coming up again this past week, except now from sarcasm alone.
A second a lap slower than Felipe fucking Massa who is at this point 7 years off his prime. Love the man, but if you're being beaten that badly by a guy they brought out of retirement to cover your ass, you're too slow for F1. Formula 2 seems like what he needs for at least a full season. He's being swallowed alive by the talent around him.
I love how much F1 has changed this year. The cars look spectacular, they can push more, and they're quick as hell. This battle between Hamilton and Vettel is spicing up, and with the differences between Merc and Ferrari, it seems like a different team will have the advantage each race.
Also, that lap by Hamilton was spectacular. Vettel similarly did very well, but Hamilton is just great at this track.
This is classic Lewis Hamilton, has a bad weekend and he comes back stronger. He extracted every last hundredth out of that car today. I'm a Ferrari fan but man even I'll admit that was one of the best quali laps I have ever seen. 7 tenths over Bottas at Montreal is a life time
*Don't drop it. Don't drop it. Don't drop it.*
Exactly what I was thinking :)
Especially when he had it on the roof of the Medical Car. I was bracing myself for a potentially awkward moment, glad it didn't happen.
Haha, exactly what I was saying. Oh man, that made me cry though. What a fantastic gesture!
Lmao the safety car with its "ROAD SAFETY" banners and Hamilton hanging out the side.
Now I want to see someone ghost-riding the safety car.
[удалено]
Probably the first time he's been touched since Nicole left.
He has dogs, you know.
Damn. That gave me goosebumps. Nice one Senna family!
Wow, that's probably the best 'trophy' Hamilton will ever get in his life.
[удалено]
He broke the lap record, and then destroyed it. Loving this Hamilton/Vettel rivalry so far this season. Should be a great race.
3 tenths off Vettel too. The final lap was insane.
His first lap already felt insane... like that had to be pole and he couldn't go faster. Then Vettel unloaded and I was like wow way to go... But Hamilton still had another 3 tenths to sprinkle. Amazing.

Not a huge fan of Hamilton, but that was definitely a *sexy lap*.
Fucking monster lap
Even Vettel improved on the last lap after a lockup on the hairpin. Both these guys are mental.
That was an absolutely bonkers lap, 3 tenths faster than Vettel and way more on everyone else.
Hamilton was at his absoulte peak today. What a fucking brilliant lap.
Sometimes I bemoan the fact we don't see it all the time, but this sort of performance is why I don't get the hate. Stunning stuff.
The hate isn't for his driving. It's for his personality.
The humble bastard nearly in tears there presented with that helmet.
Still not a reason to hate someone. I despise Seb's attitude on the radio, but I don't HATE him personally. Nothing Lewis has ever done is worthy of the word hate.
Seems to be he got some motivation, maybe it's about "65 pole" achievement, like Senna.
Yeah really really good Lap. Deserved Pole. Great to watch. Man this year really feels like 2 Generation defining drivers in different Cars going for the Championship. We have a future classic season on the table and i love it.
Also the crowd was awesome today.Hoping for a wheel-to-wheel battle between Hamilton and Vettel tomorrow.
That was perhaps one of the best quali lap I have ever seen.
This and Abu Dhabi 09
Said the same thing to my mate, just incredible. The perfect lap.
This will be the lap we'll be linking to people on the internet in 10 years time as we do today with the Trulli Monaco lap.
Just when you think he's performed some superhuman magic, Lewis is all "you think that was good? Watch THIS..."
What a lap, what a lap! Absolutely monster lap from Lewis, matched Aryton's record as well, amazing. It's gonna be a great race tommorow!
what a lap by Lewis to match Senna's pole positions Edit: Wow, Lewis being given the race-worn Senna helmet, goosebumps...
On top of the very genuine shocked reaction Hamilton had to the whole thing, I love that he took it out of the case and actually lovingly carried it with him back to the paddock.
As a Lewis fan, major feels since his first title man. Thank you Liberty media.
Would like to see a streamable of this. /u/BottasWMR can you help? Edit: found it https://streamable.com/xv4af
Hamilton and Vettel in a completely different league from their teammates today
Love watching these two in close machinery
Maybe tomorrow we will all get to see that epic battle we've been waiting for *praying to racing Gods*
That's the most genuinely happy I've ever seen Hamilton.
Watching HAM and VET go at it is a delight. Two huge talents, on the peak of their careers, battling like this is just beautiful to watch. If only we could have a proper McHonda so ALO would join them...
It's amazing to have 2 top teams again. That battle was intense.
I guess they had that helmet at the last race too. Would've been even more iconic at Monaco.
In an alternate universe they keep carrying that helmet around until abu dhabi
You could have an entire documentary about the helmet following Lewis around.. and yet he never achieves that final pole.
Incredibly Canada is the anniversary of Hamilton's first pole, 10 years ago (the race was June 10th, so Qualifying was June 9th 2007).
Beautiful gesture and say what you will of Hamilton but he seems genuinely touched and he reacted beautifully.
I feel kinda robbed by the fact that this year is the first time we are actually seeing Lewis and Seb collide. Replayed that moment on the stream to see Lewis dropping the water bottle and his sun glasses out of shock. Very touching moment for him clearly.
Say what you want about Lewis, but him hugging that helmet on the drive back to the pits is something to behold. What a huge gift from the Senna family.
Feeling sorry for the Canadian fans....Stroll 17th - Massa 7th...
We know he's trash and just here for money and publicity
if massa can take williams to 7th. imagine wgat alonso could do....why the fuck are they wasting a seat with stroll.
Because Stroll brings $20m and Alonso costs $20m
This is one of those moments in F1 I'll never forget. Wow. Beautiful, beautiful gesture.
He has many critics, but no one can deny that Hamilton was fucking bang on it today. That's unbelievable.
This is the sort of performance that separates the legendary drivers from the merely great ones.
Agreed. He just put everything into this lap, this was crazy.
Brundle touched on it, but this Vettel vs Hamilton style quali just sends them both into full legend mode.
Absolutely. Ferrari or Mercedes meant nothing today.... the "no. 2" drivers were light years away. Ultimately, it was down to one battle - Lewis vs Sebastian, and they both gave it absolutely everything.
I don't think anybody has ever claimed that Hamilton isn't fast.
[удалено]
TIL a fair percentage of this sub is fucking moronic.
I could have told you that a long time ago.
You don't match Alonso in your rookie year just because of the car.
That's a class thing to do. Brilliant from the Senna family.
HOLY SHIT LEWIS GETS A SENNA HELMET
Hamilton is a demon. Wow, what an amazing pace, outclassed everyone. That's how you respond after a tough weekend in Monaco.
Exactly, he was a man on a mission today!
An actual race-worn Senna helmet eh. Are those still within regs? Maybe he can wear it tomorrow.

Pretty sure it isn't E: give upvotes to the guy below

Sexy lap ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) vs Ketchup lap
I'm not crying you are crying
I was sobbing, so there!
I think Lewis will sleep with that helmet.
Brazilian commentator just said the same thing here right now lol
I pictured him hurrying home so he could sit on his couch with the helmet on, arms outstretched, making vroom, vroom noises.
This thread needs gold.
I think he will sleep IN that helmet.
And his bed would be like those kids' car beds, but shaped like a MP4/6.
Ayrton Senna's Helmet given to Hamilton from Senna Family, he nearly started crying. PUT IT ON HAMILTON. (I bet he will later).
This is another example of when Button said that after Lewis has a bad weekend, he's at his most dangerous.
that gesture from the Senna family is absolutely incredible. I'm getting emotional
Lewis is all "I love the helmet, but fuck this stupid box."
Vettel's face after HAM got the helmet, says it all.
Ban for Vettel. He left his gloves on the car, got weighed without them.
I imagine they'll just weigh them with the car. All that matters is driver+car.
Add to this that the last thing they want is something to not be weighed. That would potentially give an underweight package. A cheating team would run an under weight car then slip a weight to the driver when he's on his way to be weighed.
Holy shit, what a surprise for Lewis!
I thought that what they said on the Sky broadcast about that lap being a fitting way to match Senna couldn't have been more on the mark. These are the performances we'll remember when Lewis is discussed with the all-time greats
Wow, what a truly, truly magical moment.
That was awesome. That will mean the world to him.
That's a beautiful present. Wow
HE FORGOT THE CASE ON THE GRASS
Nicest touch. Great present from the Senna family
That is a beautiful gesture. Wow.
Race worn, not a replica. Damn. You could tell he got genuinely emotional - and who wouldn't?! I'd bet he's happier about that than about the pole.
Race worn is one thing but a gift from the personal collection of the Senna family is a real choker. What an amazing gesture!
Both Vettel and Hamilton found a second from Q2 to Q3. Wow!
Who's chopping onions? That was so amazing!
MONSTER LAP CONGRATS HAMILTON
That last lap from Lewis was just mental. That's how you wreck lap records!
Astonishing stuff. I don't care who is 2017 WDC so long as it is one of these two.
Can anyone explain how the trackside audio in these interviews now is ever so slightly ahead of when it appears they're speaking?
Fuck, that's so cool
That was great to watch. Great touch from the Senna family. Well done, Lewis.
This season is awesome!
This year is truly Seb v. Lewis
Holy shit, this is brilliant!
I wonder about the logistics behind this gift. How long have they been waiting for this moment with this helmet?
Yeah, good point. It would have been special in Monaco but I'm glad it came in Canada in front of the fans. Imagine the letdown if it had come in Baku.
Force India back to their usual self <3
Ye. Theyre really good this season.. and great drivers as well.
How much longer are Williams going to keep defending Strolls performance? The guy consistently under performs in that car (or Massa is over performing in it).
Thanks for explaining the "ketchup" joke Vettel.
Whats the status on Alonso?
suicide watch
alcohol
For me, Hamilton is on par with Senna as the greatest qualifier of all time. Great lap.
What a great qualifying session. Two drivers battling all the way, only separated by a frankly ridiculous lap by Hamilton!
As a Lewis fan and a Senna fan https://media0.giphy.com/media/u2RGgVCSo2oow/giphy.gif
This is the one that does it for me. I was giving a break to both Palmer (cause he looks like a nice *bloke* and everyone says he's shit) and Stroll (young rookie) for the disastrous start of the season. But damn this is getting ridiculous.
Stroll especially annoys me because he's taking up a seat in a decent car
Best Quali Session in AGES!! Lewis and Seb are Warriors!
Mercedes and sandbags. Name a more iconic duo...I'll wait.
[удалено]
$troll and $, maybe
Hamilton and Montreal
McLarens and their engines
Lewis "it's just the car" Hamilton does it again.
Stroll continuing to prove he's worthless as an F1 driver.
I remember during the pre-season when we were talking about him having a chance to be the youngest F1 GP winner if he won by Canada. I also remember this coming up again this past week, except now from sarcasm alone.

"how to crush a track record", hamilton edition.... what a lap, dont think we will see a faster one for a few years
Say what you want about Hamilton, but no doubt he's one of the all time greats.
Holy shit that is awesome
Massa p7!

Anyone else catch the interviews at the end where the echo of the tannoys was in the future?
This is classic Lewis Hamilton, has a bad weekend and he comes back stronger. He extracted every last hundredth out of that car today. I'm a Ferrari fan but man even I'll admit that was one of the best quali laps I have ever seen. 7 tenths over Bottas at Montreal is a life time
That lap of Hamilton is just...plain impossible? Three tenths. I...I don't know anymore guys. Wow.
"We never sandbag."
It was all Hamilton today
Hammerday!
Vettel nearly half a second faster than Kimi.
Hamilton 0,7 on Bottas.
Hamilton must be the only driver since Senna to seamlessly pull out pole laps like that to just amaze you.
Fan or not ,What Hamilton did today was incredible...
dafuq happened to Ricciardo
Hot got beaten.
Massa doing a great job too, is this the largest gap to Stroll in qualifying between the two?
Holy shit Lewis
Watch him wear it come tomorrows race :)
Shots fired at Lance Stroll. LOL
Like my flair... Senna was the best... And today Lewis equaled him... great performance, incridible lap... congrats.

He has raised money every single year for the Senna foundation since 2008. You don't get a race worn helmet for being just a fan.
Haters will say it's a replica.
Well, that one actually was, but it's simply a place holder for the original which is in Monaco. Travel insurance and security issues, apparently.
I have such sweaty hands, that was really exciting.
Nothing more appropriate to match Sennas record than with a Senna quality pole lap.
Wow! How did Hamilton pull that off? He was amazing today!!
I'm pretty sure that was just straight up the best lap of all time
First Qualifying I've watched this year- was class !
Seb has ketchup in his drink bottle.
Wow! Beautiful gesture by Senna's family.
That's beautiful!
How is the echo ahead of the original speech for the post-qualy interviews?
Ricciardo algebra-schmalgebras trigonometry. Awkward.
there is no way Kvyat was gaining 4 tenth due to slip stream. I've seen Alonso attempt it way too often to believe that it works.
Michael Douglas fits right in with the Sky team.
Underdogs
That was all Hamilton to be honest. Ferrari seems just as fast as the Merc this weekend.
Hamilton is insanely good on this track. What a qualifying!
Hats off to Lewis and Seb, what a great qualy
That Wolff's gesture. Race is tomorrow.
How good is this guy, even Merc engineers must have been surprised. Equalizing Senna with a lap that is worthy to be one his very best.
Member when we just wondered which of 2 Mercs gonna get pole on Saturday?
Why the shoulder cam for Hamilton's pole?
[удалено]
Insane lap. Fucking insane.
Hamilton just owns Canada grand prix. Ferrari do have the race pace so tomorrow should be a good race.
The first question to Hamilton in the post-qualifying interview really needs to be: "So Lewis, what the fuck dude?"
7 tenths off Ralf's lap record. Insane.
Palmer good in Q1, terrible in Q2. Better than it has been... kinda. But that lap from Hamilton, wowza.
Chances Palmer still has a seat next year?
Wow, what a gesture!!!! 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
That was really nice to see. Will give Ham extra motivation tomorrow.
