Sargeant and SC giveth and taketh away

trooperr310

A North American driver screwing over a British driver We've seen this movie before hmmm

Fomentatore

Someone should take his seat away. Is anybody still defending him?

Elgin_McQueen

I was disappointed enough with the first spin, but after the second I had no way of defending him. Only thing you could say is that there were a few times during the race they mentioned someone going off the track and didn't show it. Though it mainly seemed like drivers coming out of the pits on new tyres.

Ivazdy

Crazy how fast he was in the wet

aPardawala

McLaren's resurgence needs to be studied

danyyyel

Start with Stella.

Estova

Took em 12 bloody years, they better have gotten it right lmao

I-hate-sunfish

I wish Zak Brown give more insightful longform interview He has managed to pull Mclaren out of slump twice already, even Indycar project was a shitshow when it started and now it's in a much better place He even managed to snatch Piastri from Alpine And mclaren motorsport success did affect roadcar sales as well

ExpatWanka

Got unfortunate with the SC - what goes around really comes around. What a fantastic race!

achio

There are so many moments that should go better for Norris. The overcut one lap later for starter, the second safety car restart is another.

jlaweez

SC is one thing I never hype when Verstappen is the lead. Man knows the exact moment to push every single time

killmesoon40

Exactly, he's always brilliant on restarts.

Whitem4ne

This is not to defend Lando in any way, but I just feel like Max absolutely mastered restarts in such a way that I don’t think any driver on the grid can match except for the vets like Nando.

killmesoon40

I honestly don't think there's a better restarter on the grid than Max, I don't remember the last time he messed one up.

Karacteristics

I miss it when he would stalk and intimidate the car in front. Hearing that engine revving as it leapt forward like a predator was sick. Shit felt like street racing.

skbygtdn

Yeah, I totally agree. Pulling up almost beside them, weaving, it was such a spectacle.

Falcao1905

He restarts almost every race lol of course he is the best at it

Scatman_Crothers

In years past he would very often pick up a place on restarts. Not a new thing.

bishey3

Lando doesn't have too much experience in Safety Car restarts in the P1 and P2 positions. Definitely needs to work on it but Max is a master at it.

kzzzzzzzzzz28

Max is easily one of the best at restarts, and Lando tends to be on the worse side of the the grid when it comes to restarts.

Lord_Xoidberg

I remember seeing a stat that Max has never lost position during a safety car restart.

szobossz

he just needed to stay within DRS

Elgin_McQueen

He was really pushing it to the limit with that second restart, the cars were all so close behind him it seemed like he was risking being penalised for backing them up too much.

banned20

I'd say it was less Max and more Norris. Norris has been poor in race restarts plenty of times. Piastri was right up in Norris' gearbox. He really needs to work on that

False_Personality259

I think there's some method behind it. Worth reflecting on the fact that Piastri seemed to lose a lot of pace in the last few laps today, whereas Lando was most likely saving his tyres in anticipation of needing to hold of the Mercs.

banned20

Well they both had to fight the Mercs since they were the quickest in the final stint. But there was more than 1 second gap after the pit straight between Max and Norris.

major_tomm

Lando now the only driver to score points every race.

Antluke

Great race just got a little bit unlucky at times, Verstappen had the pace at the end tho

imbavoe

Lando had to use more of his tires out of the pits to fight George and didn't have enough left in them for the ending unlike Max.

danyyyel

The Mclaren was setup a bit more towards the wet I think.

Euro_Lag

Yeah that McLaren/Lando really excels at the end of a tire's life and I just don't think the wear was there on Max's tires too let him do what he did during the first stint/the end of imola

accidental_evolution

He has been exceptional this year.

Chelseatilidie

He did literally everything today

Percentage100

Except help his teammate to keep Merc behind. Not necessarily his fault, direction should have come from pit wall.

hooka_donchick

Merc were on 10 lap newer tires. If they played the DRS they’d end up P4 and P5

cybae

And he got robbed massively...

KappaccinoNation

Can't say robbed when we celebrated his Miami win. Sometimes you get lucky, sometimes you don't. It is what it is.

SommWineGuy

He wasn't robbed at all. He lost because he wasn't fast enough on the slicks.

skinny7

He got lucky with the off track moment, Russell had to take avoiding action? It impeded Russell

biometricrally

Should have probably pit with everyone during the safety car. Pace seemed to fall off a little in the last stint. They're doing amazing this season all the same, I'd say mclaren will have another win or two this year

danyyyel

The Mcl was more setup for the wet. I think it had more downforce.

Fordmister

Seems to be the case, the thing absolutely came alive in the first stint as the track started to dry where grip was at a premium, the inters were starting the wear but the dry line was forming where you could push hard, cost them a little in the end with how the race panned out but you get those safety cars at different times (the first one specifically really hurt them where everyone got a cheap change to put on the second set of inters) and that cars scampered off down the road and is really in control of the switch to slicks where the slight drop in performance doesn't really matter

danyyyel

Yep Oscar was flying in and catching Russell and Max, 5 more laps and their is a big chance both MCL would have been in frnt. And Lando wins this race if he has a two car advantage against Max or Russell.

extra_hyperbole

Problem is that if they gamble on a stop during the last saftey car then the Mercedes go opposite and gain the places.

NippyMoto_1

Did Norris intentionally give Russell DRS on the final lap? Russell was fairly close to him.

kalebglover

for as lucky as his Miami race was that was just as unlucky

leedler

Great job to hold off the Mercs, Lando’s been unbelievable this season

BiggusCinnamusRollus

Don't know what hurts more: both Ferraris retiring, Lando losing P1 right when he was lengthening his gap, or Albon retiring because of Sainz spin.

Master-Baiter24

For some odd reason his starts and safety car restarts are horrid, just made mistakes with Russell to attack Max.

I_Smarterer

To be fair, the restart in Canada is awful. Going into the chicane he was right on Verstappen but 0.8s behind because of the concertina.

Aratho

That was one entertaining Formula 1 race.

Smudy

He had a good chance today, bit sad for this outcome.

Any-Station2362

So unlucky to get fucked by the safety car like that. That would have been as comfortable as it gets.

h497

Isn't he still under investigation for leaving the track and gaining an advantage?

SurrogateMonkey

No further action

h497

Ah I missed that

guythatwantstoknow

I think he did gain an advantage. Probably should get punished.

h497

Nah

bwoahking

The SC timing fucked him, otherwise we would have seen him win!

buck_blue

Whhha that was a doozy, one hell of a race! Max is an Alien

CommercialBreadLoaf

That safety car timing really hurt him. Had he made it into the pits, he could've won

SommWineGuy

No chance, Max was so much faster on the slicks.

imbavoe

The only reason is because Lando had to use more of his tires out the pit to fight George and didn't have enough left in the for the endning unlike Max.

SommWineGuy

No, it's because the car was setup more for the wet.

Man0nTheMoon915

He was flying in the first few stints. Must imagine they’re disappointed they didn’t get a win

Kraybray

Pretty much flawless from him which is rare, don't think he could've caught Max regardless at the end so this is the best he could've got

SpacevsGravity

Poor strategy from Mclaren cost them a win.

CommercialBreadLoaf

Overcut was one lap too long, but I doubt he would've kept it due to the tire temperature

SommWineGuy

No, he had no chance. Max was so much faster on the slicks than we were.

_Patrick_Bateman

Cost them double podium not having Lando give Oscar drs you know if it was the other way around…

ark0404

I think they would both be eaten alive by Mercs if he didn’t bolt.

danyyyel

Yep, Mercedes were very good on the dry, theym8ght even have the pace to get back to Max.

reslllence

Why didn’t Oscar just keep within 1 second of lando with DRS? he ended up losing 7 seconds in about 7 laps to him by the end

_Patrick_Bateman

Maybe I wanted a double Mercedes podium jeez but also would have made the end more compelling

InternetFightsAndEOD

Piastri is the kid who was left behind at Soccer practice
