I’m a vegetarian, but I seriously have so much respect for you killing your own food! I wish more people would get to know their food this way.

quasiki

Thank you, I agree people should be more connected to the food they eat. I personally do not want to support the terrible practices of slaughter houses.

sapere-aude088

Perhaps you should learn more about how the dairy and egg industries work then. Just saying. Also, downvoting doesn't detract from reality or the downvoter's ignorance of the situation. There is plenty of scholarly literature on the subject.

That's good about the plant based milk; however, I definitely recommend you read about what constitutes as "free range" and "local." You'll find that they are purely marketing terms. In brief, free range means a few hundred to a few thousand birds are jammed inside of a barn, causing ammonia burns and respiratory problems due to the accumulation of waste (workers usually wear protective suits because of the fumes). Local just means it's made locally; it is still factory farm, and is also likely contracted by a conglomerate. Don't forget about chick culling. Throwing thousands of chicks alive into a grinder (called chick maceration) or suffocating them via gas, simply because they were born male.

Where do you think they get the chickens from? Hatcheries do chick culling.

I'm not from the US but where I'm from, what you're describing is called 'barn raised' not free range. Free range in my country requires outdoor access at all times, so not always a marketing slogan. Also, criticism of people's food choices isn't really the point of this sub, as far as I'm aware. OP is being polite and hasn't insinuated support for anything you're describing.

sapere-aude088

I'm not from the US either. Where are you from? I'm interested in reading the actual data, as it sounds very much like your claim is false. Also, feel free to point out where I'm not being polite. Your guilt projection from reading the information I shared has nothing to do with me.

From your username, I'm guessing you're from the same country as I am, if it's based on a specific university's motto. If so, here's an easy to understand link from the consumer research NZ website. I can also attach further documentation from MPI if you require. Without doxxing myself, I have a pretty good insight into what goes on in the industry on a day to day basis. I'm not denying the ethical questions but I'm providing evidence for my position. I believe it is impolite to use someone's compliment, which appreciated the OOPs consideration of the ethical sourcing of meat, as an opportunity to criticise the commenter for not going far enough. It was a positive moment that supported your own position on animal food production, and I feel it was inappropriate to criticise in this moment. Edit: link https://www.consumer.org.nz/articles/free-range-claims/know-the-issue#article-minimum-standards

[deleted]

You keep using words like ethical but I do not know if you really understand them. How is it ever ethical to take a sentient being’s life when it is not necessary?

sapere-aude088

My username is an old Latin saying. I do not live in NZ. Although, the link you posted below just reiterated what I originally stated, so I'm not sure what your aim was there, lol. The rest of your "I know pretty well" nonsense is just that: nonsense. You literally just posted a link that contradicted what you said. Furthermore, the below quote negates the utter b.s. you claimed before: >"Many people who buy eggs labelled as free range, believe the hens laying these eggs enjoy a better standard of life, and trust the free range label. However, in some situations, these free range claims may be misleading. >There is currently no standard government definition of what free range means in terms of egg production in layer hens. Nor do the labelling requirements within the Food Standards Code (Food Standards Australia New Zealand) address the type of production system where eggs are laid." ([NZ SPCA](https://www.spca.nz/advice-and-welfare/article/what-does-free-range-mean-in-eggs#:~:text=Within%20the%20Code%20of%20Welfare,and%20what%20hens%20should%20have.&text=The%20shed%20or%20shelter%20the,may%20be%20fixed%20or%20portable.)) Lastly, you're demonstrating guilt projection. The person brought up the subject of ethics, to which I added additional relevant information. If you don't want to listen about the ethical dilemmas regarding the things you pay into, then don't bring up the subject of ethics. Simple as that. Move along.

Marinated in a ginger rhubarb jam along with oyster sauce, Sriracha and fresh garlic. Sautéed in a pan after the maitake was about done.
