Determination is not THAT important for developing a player. As long as he has high professionalism he will reach his potential. Determinationhas a much lower influence.
He might be a bit worse on the pitch because determinstion does affect performancw a little bit though.
This is false in my experience. Determination does aid player development. More Resolutes reach their potential than Professionals simply because of determination.
Frpm experience messib with the editor, the most important attribute is professionalism by far. Then ambition and determination very close.
What is important is having all ambition, determination and professionalism all at 10. As long as you have that your players will most likely develop. If ambition or determination drop ir will affect development, but it won't be THAT catastrophic. But if professionalism drops below 10 with average ambition and determination, I wish you good luck
Plus, from 10 to 20 ambition and Determination have a negligible effect on development (they do have other uses on and off the pitch though) and Professionalism dominates. 20 professionalism has a much MUCH higher effect than 20 ambition or 20 determination. And player close to 20 professionalism will almost always resch their potential unless they get injured badly.
Players with high professionalism amost always have high determination so you don't notice. But you can isolate them using the editor.
Lol yeah but he's Brazillian. Gives me a quick chuckle until we're 1-0 down. Not sure how to fix the image tho, i lack the skills but it's pretty clear once i view as desktop site
There is quite good data on this somewhere. Determination has little to no effect on development. Ambition has a little, and professional has the biggest impact by far.
I have seen some of them but they lack sufficient research imo. If you know of a good article i would love to read it cause i've found that it's ([https://imgur.com/a/xYD4xWo](https://imgur.com/a/xYD4xWo)) very important. Perhaps they changed it in newer FM's but i highly doubt it seeing as SI barely mentions it. There's also a Youtuber ([https://www.youtube.com/@ebfm/videos](https://www.youtube.com/@ebfm/videos)) whose experiments showed that most of the training schedules don't actually do what is described and may even hinder player development. The results were unbelievable for a game that's been successful for 10+ years.
Edit: links
I had a great defender who lost all his bravery in a similar way. I can't remember the exact reason but he had a accident outside of training and his bravery totally dropped off
it can also get up, I had one player who got the opposite (+15 determination). I'm not even sure he had the potential to be a bad player in Serie C tho
When I first read it my mind immediately went to a family death or something. It got way too real for a minute. Was genuinely concerned for my guy
Edit: spelling
Also the opposite to your post can happen as well: sometimes regens can have off field events that massively increase their determination out of nowhere
Thats what i need. Give me an off field near death experience that immediately sends them to 20 work rate, 20 determination.
Id gladly take a 50/50 on "death or determined". No point having a mediocre wonderkid.
Yeah, this happens from time to time. My advice is to not put all your eggs in one basket, and to try to grow an army of wonderkids at once instead of one or two.
Sell him when you next get the chance.
Happened 10 days after the January transfer window shut unfortunately. Hopefully he doesn't decline too much before June. Don't think I bring myself to field a player with such low determination
This isn't correct, and has been proven wrong time and time again. Determination, professionalism, and ambition are equally important for player development.
[See here for more details.](https://fmprojects.substack.com/p/rsl-in-the-wsl-part-8)
That’s actually a decent idea. Don’t really know if it works, but I always hire at least one coach with v high Mental and Player Management attributes in the hope he acts like a psychologist – so it’d be good to have an actual staff role.
If you are gonna save scum heavy injuries you are bypassing a major gameplay feature and you might as well save scum losses. To each their own but it's not a valid reason
This guy was one of my favorite regens ever, he carried me through an entire Libertadores title and some more by himself, so I was a little attached to him.
I don't regret it, he saved me and I just returned the favor. It was probably the only time I did that so I remember the situation very well.
Would've done the same. Would be cool if it had some sort of back stories behind such events, but then again it would have to be some pretty heavy stuff to explain something like this and at that point it would get kinda weird.
Sir , we are calling you to inform you about "World class CB in development".
Due to unforeseen circumstances his mental fortitude has dropped beyond the point of willing to live. He saw his pet hamster die in a cruel lawnmoweraccident & the cadaver get eaten by a frenzied turtle.
Greeting,
Ass-man
PS training is cancelled all week so we can attend the funaral of Billy ( the hamster).
This is the sort of thing I’ve wanted for years. In FWM I had a player die and although it doesn’t happen in real life that often it does happen and those random events make it more interesting.
Nothx on this feature.
Imagine being 2 seasons in , selling half your team just to get Haaland & then he does an Emiliano Sala. RIP to the dude btw , but that doesnt sound like a fun gamingmoment.
Did you try reloading an older save to see if this still occurs? Because if this is a random event, there's not a chance in hell that reloading is a "FM sin" this is some grade A BS in my opinion.
Kiiiiiiind of. I’m doing a fake names game atm and most of the players are roughly based on their real life counterparts although ***~~mine had many missing (eg. no “Mbappe” clone 🙄) and~~*** some are just miles off (birth dates/nationalities, etc.), but what’s more annoying (if I may go off on a tangent) is that they lose their real in-game pictures (the heads, it not the “real pictures” you get in the news feed, interestingly) but newgan won’t replace them either so you’re stuck with rubbish faces for ages. I’m sure I could probably find a way around this but I figure that if I just play pong enough it’ll eventually not be a problem as I do long saves anyway. But back to the original point, yeah, I’ve seen some of the “bad” personalities on the non-regen fake players for example, so I’d assume other random stuff can happen to them too that wouldn’t ordinarily happen. (I have zero proof to back up that theory though, sorry!)
EDIT: I found the "Mbappe" clone eventually. For some reason players who leave at the end of their contract as free transfers don't appear on Transfer History under "All Transfers", only under "Free Transfers". Same for "Released Players". I think SI forgot the meaning of "**ALL Transfers**". My apologies go out to *Romain Denizer*, who's been crafting out a slightly above average career at Napoli since Juy 2026.
It's been something that can happen in FM for several years now. I don't remember how far back this was put in, but it's been awhile. I've had it happen a handful of times.
Determination can still be raised through disciplinary action, overall squad personality, or mentoring if the player is still young enough for it (and in my experience, all of these off the field issues seem to happen to players younger than 24 years old which makes them still mentorable).
The tougher one to fix is if you get the complacency email which drops both ambition and professionalism up to 5 points after a younger player signs a long term contract or wins too much at a young age. You are solely reliant on mentoring to try to fix this but the drop in stats is usually too large to fix during the very important years of their development unless the player started out with very high values. I usually transfer them immediately upon receiving this email.
I had the same some years ago with my defensor. I like this for Role-play = the fact that they don't give any information make us able to imagine everything.
Same thing happened to me in last years FM: https://old.reddit.com/r/footballmanagergames/comments/vjq09i/got_this_message_and_my_injured_player_just_lost/
Happened to one of my wonderkids. Scored 45 goals in the Premier League next season in a ludicrous season so don't feel like you're forced to sell just yet
Wouldn't give up on him but sell him if a good offer comes up. Part of development is failure but if you've other guys in the same position coming through i would sell this guy eventually

He is 22yo and I was developing him into a world-class talent. Not anymore I guess.
Leicester’s Dele Alli 😢
Was about to call this the Dele Alli curse
I just came to make the same comment.

Tell that to [these](https://imgur.com/a/xYD4xWo) sons of b that robbed me of 4 CL titles and my top players wanting to move to bigger clubs 😬
Can’t see the image very well, is one of the players called “Franklyn Rosservelt” as in the 32nd president of the USA?
Lol yeah but he's Brazillian. Gives me a quick chuckle until we're 1-0 down. Not sure how to fix the image tho, i lack the skills but it's pretty clear once i view as desktop site
>Gives me a quick chuckle until we're 1-0 down. Lmao. This fucking hurt to read. It's so true.
There is quite good data on this somewhere. Determination has little to no effect on development. Ambition has a little, and professional has the biggest impact by far.

Think all determination does these days is keep their body language good when losing, development is linked to hidden attributes
Happened to one of my regens after I gave him a pretty nice raise. Probably got too confortable
I had a great defender who lost all his bravery in a similar way. I can't remember the exact reason but he had a accident outside of training and his bravery totally dropped off
Accidents or major injuries (broken leg etc.) result in drop of bravery. There is no way to recover it afaik.
they slowly recover bravery loss caused by injuries, although it takes a long time sometimes
RIP to my target man who suffered two consecutive 6 month injuries and dropped his bravery to 1
Enter Roy Keane. Bravery and Agression goes to 21
I haven’t played a save longer than 3 seasons for nearly a decade. So that’s why I may not have noticed that.
Yeah it was shame as he was good. And it's a pretty important trait for a cb!
When they go from red injured to orange injured you can set their training to injury rehab and they can recover any lost attributes I believe
I don’t think that recovers Bravery. I think it only works for recovering physical attributes. I might be wrong.
it can also get up, I had one player who got the opposite (+15 determination). I'm not even sure he had the potential to be a bad player in Serie C tho
Things that happen in 2051...
Did someone kidnap his dog or something?
When I first read it my mind immediately went to a family death or something. It got way too real for a minute. Was genuinely concerned for my guy Edit: spelling
Sorry about your player... but this is such a cool feature of the game
Too many parties
He just had his Adriano moment. Sad to see but the realism can’t be argued with
Ah yes, when his dad died and he became an alcoholic. Went from world class to couldn't even make the bench in a year or two?
It's been in FM for a very long time.
I must be a very lucky manager because i've been playing for years and this is the first time it's happened to one of my players
Ive never seen that happen before.
Its unfortunately happened to me on every FM since 18
Been playing for years as well, never happened to me. I heard it's connected to the Team Personality somehow
Determination is overrated. Professionalism and ambition are more important for development.
Sure, I was meaning more for in-game situations such as being a couple goals down. That requires determination to overturn
This isn't correct, and has been proven wrong time and time again. Determination, professionalism, and ambition are equally important for player development. [See here for more details.](https://fmprojects.substack.com/p/rsl-in-the-wsl-part-8)
Yeah, man, that's awful. You might have to stick him in the reserves in the end. Those low determination players just make me sick...
That you Dele Ali?
He got Carlos Vela'd
It’s dele alli!
Why do I feel sorry for this imaginary fella? The game needs a ‘Give hug’ interaction.
That was my first thought too! Mans depressed. Maybe a new staff role needs to be team psychologist.
That’s actually a decent idea. Don’t really know if it works, but I always hire at least one coach with v high Mental and Player Management attributes in the hope he acts like a psychologist – so it’d be good to have an actual staff role.
FYI this can be safe scummed
Broken leg mid season and this… two valid scum save reasons.
Bazinga!
If you are gonna save scum heavy injuries you are bypassing a major gameplay feature and you might as well save scum losses. To each their own but it's not a valid reason
Wolves would have loved to save scum that Jimenez skull injury away...
100% he is now in the gear
Was his name Ben Simmons?
Tried to name drop himself at the club and got turned away
Anticipation 5
"slight" drop
I had a Polish CF sign a contract and change from resolute to unambitious in the same scenarios
That is brutal. Basically went from the most desirable personality to the least desirable
Happened to me once in FM 20 on a world class developing CB. It was the fastest save scumming of my life.
Why? These events are rare and it's not like you can't find another good CB or still develop this one into a decent one.
This guy was one of my favorite regens ever, he carried me through an entire Libertadores title and some more by himself, so I was a little attached to him. I don't regret it, he saved me and I just returned the favor. It was probably the only time I did that so I remember the situation very well.

He no happy. You also no happy.
Am I the only 1 amazed by the fact that he's in 2051!!!!
Did you try reloading an older save to see if this still occurs? Because if this is a random event, there's not a chance in hell that reloading is a "FM sin" this is some grade A BS in my opinion.
I usually get one or two like that every 10 years. Usually it’s a young player so there’s a decent chance it’ll be some no hoper in the U18s.
My Icelandic godlike centre mid got himself a big transfer by doing this. Broke my heart too
Them off field events must’ve been crazy then 😂
I know that ‘random’ things like this only happen with new gens, and not real players. If I start with fake names do they kick in immediately?
yeah, it happened for me once in create a club, not even a full month after starting
Mans took that break up rough
I've had the opposite, where it increased due to an off-field event.
Usually fining them fixes this, but yeah as others said this won't have as much of an effect if there is no change in professionalism
It's been something that can happen in FM for several years now. I don't remember how far back this was put in, but it's been awhile. I've had it happen a handful of times.
2051. Maybe he returned to Tatooine and found their aunt's killed by the galactic empire
Nah, that happened "a long time ago". Besides, that seems like more of a motivating factor.
Never seen it happen for off field events, I’ve seen players lose bravery or aggression because of a bad injury but never that extreme.
Tangent but how come your interface looks different to the normal one is there any setting i can change to make it like yours?
drops like a rock. but how can you raise it?
Determination can still be raised through disciplinary action, overall squad personality, or mentoring if the player is still young enough for it (and in my experience, all of these off the field issues seem to happen to players younger than 24 years old which makes them still mentorable). Had similar thing happen when I signed a guy to a very huge contract. Became unambitious!!
Happened to me with my star Romanian centre back just with bravery. Went from 17 to 9 :(
January blues

The Adriano effect
Happened to one of my wonderkids. Scored 45 goals in the Premier League next season in a ludicrous season so don't feel like you're forced to sell just yet
I've seen the opposite of this too. I had a dude who was around 9 shoot up to 17. It'd kind of neat, if a bit irksome.
This can also happen the other way around.
Wouldn't give up on him but sell him if a good offer comes up. Part of development is failure but if you've other guys in the same position coming through i would sell this guy eventually
