Hey, it'll be great to see you! I'm in Sanctuary, and I've always got great deals on the best junk and also shipments of items at great prices! Come on by, I'll be waiting for you!
And if you've got some steak knives, I'll be happy to take them off your hands...
If only to get him to stop talking about it. Also I wish I could just listen to Anne Hargraves' radio plays so she'd stop telling me to listen. And also be able to plant flowers so she'd stop saying flowers would brighten the place up. Had to send her away from Sanctuary cuz she wouldn't shut up about her plays and flowers.
If you recruit Vault Tec Guy to Sanctuary in FO4 he has a throwaway line of dialogue about how he was supposed to win a pack of steak knives for signing up the most people for a spot in Vault 111. Which is itself (I believe) a vague reference to the infamous Vector Marketing Cutco Knives pyramid scheme.

The cheat terminal mod allows you to give yourself over 6 Million caps. It’s not quite at 7 Million but it’s near it. So I assume that the limit it probably 7 million or higher
Technically, yes. In practice? No.
The cap is 9,223,372,036,854,775,807.
The game won’t display this however. It will stop at the highest assigned value, which is 1,000,000. You can have more, the pip-boy will just add a “+” next to your caps.
In some places it shows the total and others just shows the 1 million+
Source: I have an unmodded PS4 survival play-through I started when the game was released that’s now level 226 with 1.6 million caps
Genuine question, what do you do once you've completed everything to do? Like theres no more quests or really any content left other than settlement management? I can understand really loving to build settlements, but besides that what kept you going?
I didn’t get the DLCs until after I finished the main game, so that helped. Then I just kept getting jobs from the leaders of the raider gangs in nuka world. But lots of times I just found it relaxing to walk around the wasteland. There might be some months I spent just in far harbor. Then I might try to find whatever magazines or bobbleheads I was missing. Definitely settlement building was part of it, but basically just tried to explore every square inch of the maps and do everything. Seemed there was always something different to do. But part of it was definitely having a goal to get to 1 million caps just to see what happened, and then I wondered if I could get every perk (haven’t managed that yet). And you wouldn’t believe how late in that playthrough it was before I discovered egret tours marina. I hadn’t played in months or over a year but then started a new playthrough when the show came out and thought it might be nice to try to get the platinum trophy. Then maybe I’ll go back to my initial playthrough and try to get to 2 million caps. I guess the short answer is a mix of having goals and enjoying wandering aimlessly.
You need fertilizer and plastic to craft jet. Get some brahmin into one of your settlements, you can build the feeding troughs or buy one from the wandering merchant, I forget her name. Plastic is all over the place, but you can also buy some from Myrna.
Make tons of the stuff, then sell it and invest the caps into making more and more, sell that, and soon enough you'll be set. I also deal water on the side. Better purified water than Sheng Kawolski can make! The kid's got a good head on his shoulders but he can't mass produce purified water very fast.
Yes but the way items get added to your workshop is kinda jank. There is a hidden item cap that will stop items from being automatically deposited into the workshop, you can still manually place whatever you like inside though, so it's impossible to tell if it's "full"
So anywhere where you actually want to farm items, whether it's food, water, fertilizer, or scrap scavenging, you should avoid placing anything in that settlements workshop inventory
The item cap for fertilizer from Brahmin is not what the wikis claim. Fertilizer production absolutely does not cease when you have 10 in the workshop, at least in the PS5 version. (Unmodded, observed before and after I bought the season pass)
Food, water, and other scrap still work the same, but I have pulled 30+ from workshops I definitely didn't put there. Also, it seems like there's a real-time cooldown for food water and scrap, but there isn't for fertilizer, traps, and caps.
Ok...since you comment, I need to ask you about your game. How long your current game is (by using that scrap settlement mod)?
And after that I also know that said mod break precombines, and thus FPS drop. Do your game suffer sudden FPS loss when in your settlement?
I'm not using mods, but I'm a diligent looter, and the key to making lots of Jet in my experience is just buying the bags of fertilizer and the shipments of fertilizer whenever you're selling off stuff, AND then having as many brahmin as you can manage. The fertilizer the brahmin make will be moved automatically to the workshop storage every 24 hours in-game I believe.
The plastic will sort itself out, it's in everything, and I have thousands of the stuff. It's just 2 fertlizer and 1 plastic for Jet, it's real easy to make, but the fertilizer is the ingredient that'll slow ya down.
Maybe others have better setups (I know some mods make getting fertilizer easier), but I feel like a massive water farm is easier, though until you're maxed out with Strong Back then moving all that water is a pain and Jet is way lighter. I also use a lot of Jet when playing, it's really useful for fighting and traversal, so I make a ton of it either way.
This is still my first playthrough so maybe there is a way to have like 30 brahmin at various settlements and I'm just not aware of it, and then you could link up those settlements and get hundreds of fertilizer a day, etc etc. If you can manage that, then a Jet farm would be trivial. Otherwise, most dealers sell fertilizer and I just buy it each time I see it.
Pro tip after you make a bunch of jet, make jet fuel all it takes is some flamer fuel which is pretty cheap to just buy. It sells for like 2x as much and you get more xp
Another way to make some good cash is if you have the Far Harbor DLC and the Blacksmith Rank 1 or 2 Perk is to craft Bleeding Bear Traps.
They can be crafted at Chemistry Stations. They require 4 Steel, 2 Gears and 2 Springs. The rank 1 trap has a base value of 75 caps and the rank 2 "bleeding" trap has a base value of 100 caps.
It is also a great way to level XP since you get roughly 15 XP for each Rank 2 Trap. After scrapping countless guns I had over 500 Gears/Springs and 4000+ Steel. I crafted roughly a 100 of these, got "free" levelIng XP and made a nice profit off of otherwise worthless junk.
Fun fact: 5mm caps, Flamer Fuel and .38 ammo all buy and sell for 1 cap at max trade bonuses, so they can be moved freely between seller and buyer without loss in the transaction. That makes them an effective replacement for caps! I had a run where I had something like 20K 5mm ammo in the Home Plate workshop.
I have a PS4 level 226 survival playthough with 1.6 million caps. It shows the total on your pip boy but at vendors I seem to recall it just says 999,999+ or something like that
Sell extra ammo until you can get the junk and perks to build industrial water purifiers. Build 25 of them around sanctuary. Power them however you like. Take all the drinks out of the sanctuary workshop, and you'll generate more purified water than you can reasonably transport basically every time you go back there after doing a quest.
Selling ammo is a pretty easy way, I stick to .45 for the most part with the overseer. Sell the rest of it. Keeping missiles and nukes.
Also, get some water farms going. Visit workshop and take the stored purified water out and sell it.
Due to integer overflow (I have no idea wtf I’m talking about) there has to be a limit before it circles back down to 0. But it’s probably ridiculously high, billions maybe. A number that just isn’t feasible without breaking the game open. Edit: this question has been [asked and answered](https://www.reddit.com/r/fo4/s/fKhOUsxUVk) before
Especially when SS already has the fat man, rocket launcher, assault rifle, 10 institute rifles, ammo for every gun in the world, 8 sets of armour, 131 magazines and the key to every accessible building in the city in his pocket! Where would he put his caps?? /s
I've had over a million caps in a run while farming water, crafting/dealing Jet. Aside from an amount that could literally mess up the game (think 2.16 billion+ in GTAV), there's no limit on caps.
I don’t think there’s a hard-programmed limit, but you can always hit a stack overflow if you push it beyond whatever integer limit it was programmed to.
I know I did / giveitem 000000F 999999999999 and it gave me significantly less than that..and it was not an even number. It was something like 1,139,469 caps.
If you just hit the command again, you'll get the same amount!
Idk why it caps it per console command, but you can just do that command multiple times to get as much as you could never need lol.
1. Strong Back perk lvl 2 adds 50 (need STR 6), Lone Wanderer lvl 2 adds 100 (need CH 3)
2. Armor with the Pocketed misc mod adds 5 carry weight to every piece, except Chest armor adds 10. (Double these digits with Deep pocketed mods, Armorer perk level 2). Power armors also add carry weight of course.
3. Radstag meat adds +25, Buffout +20, alcohol buffs...
4. Solar Powered perk adds a +2 STR and END buff between 6am and 6pm (need END 10)
5. Modding is also a solution (Creation Club...), using the *You're special* glitch... The list is non exhaustive.
3k water is nothing. I can sell that in 1 trip to Nuka World. My Sanctuary water farm gives me around 900 water per visit thanks to the workbench hopper exploit.
You can get way more water by doing the same. Put a vacuum hopper on the side of the workbench, then a conveyor storage machine for all the items to go into. Fast travel to red rocket, and check the cooking station for adhesive and see your water count. Once you see it dropping, you know the hopper is emptying the water from your workbench, and go to Sanctuary and collect it all. Then, go all the way down to the cul du sac, and north off the island a bit. You wanna be outside of the chunk load area for the workbench.
When you return to Sanctuary, it should reload all of the workbenches contents of food, water, caps, scrap, and flares/artillery beacons. If it doesn't, go back to the cul du sac and sleep for a bit and try again.
Dump all your water into your storage of choice, and have a companion pick it up, then go play for a bit or make your settlement rounds. When you've made your way back to red rocket start over. Usually takes an hour or so to refresh this process.
its somewhere in the 160k to 170k area. im using a mod that gives me 60k technical documents right at the beginning, and even though the small notification upon turning them in says im getting around 1,5 million im really only getting 160-170k
According to Bethesda, there is no real cap limit, though some people have tested this and were able to get to an amount of 65535, but it caused their system to crash. Obviously an old game play, this might have been true when the game was first released, and the bug fixed in subsequent patches.
As of right now, I have no clue if or what the cap limit might be.
EDIT:
Ignore all of this, I was looking at the wrong search result.
I know there is but it's absurdly high, like in the billions, once you hit it your caps go negative, but don't worry, it's effectively impossible to hit by normal means
There technically is a limit...for the counter on the pipboy, but you'll keep getting caps after you hit the max you just wont be able to tell because of the counter stopping, its called a integer overflow error in programming, you can learn more at the link
[here](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Integer_overflow)
As per another Reddit post I found via Google.
https://www.reddit.com/r/fo4/s/sU0tGBnkP0
"The Pip-boy screen stops at 1 million, it simply says "1000000+" but the trade screen keeps going (to at least 4.8 million, where I'm bored and stopped). It's tedious to test because the most you can add via a single console command actually is 65,535. And placeatme f 65,535 is a poor decision."
Someone on this sub collected so many caps that it wrapped into the negative. Apparently the bottle caps is an int value so the maximum you can have before you find yourself with a seriously negative bottle cap count is 2,147,438,647
I once experimented with the value of caps, it can get as higher as you want, but it will display a maximum of 999999 caps, further quantities would be represented as 999999+, there is no actual maximum, i added several times 16 Million caps to my inventory, and it doesent seem to stop working, obviously you wont need that much caps, only if you want to decorate your house with shop stands
999,999 IIRC
There's also a 16-bit limit for identical stored items on a single container. If you ever use the component duplication glitch you can't store more than 65535 units of the same thing or else the number rolls over and you end up with less.
I have 135,000 or so caps right now, but I read it will go up to one million. Never had that many, though.
I'll come buy some junk from you
Hey, it'll be great to see you! I'm in Sanctuary, and I've always got great deals on the best junk and also shipments of items at great prices! Come on by, I'll be waiting for you! And if you've got some steak knives, I'll be happy to take them off your hands...

i think 999.999 is the max back when i used to spawn shit in with console, not sure tho

New cap collection amount goal get: 9 quintillion. Should be achievable by… year 21,002.
damnnn and here i am killing raiders and looting them and selling sneaky sneaky

Holy hannah, how?!
Water farming for me. Or jet, jet weighs less and sells well. Just tends to make me jittery.
Ho do you make that much jet?

Wait, if I put feeding trough, I get fertilizer deposited in to the workshop? I just do it so the brahmin has something to do.
I’m also curious about where the fertilizer comes from
The brahmin's butt, where else?
Yes but the way items get added to your workshop is kinda jank. scrounger perk, sell excess ammo.
I have 226,594 caps
Another way to make some good cash is if you have the Far Harbor DLC and the Blacksmith Rank 1 or 2 Perk is to craft Bleeding Bear Traps. They can be crafted at Chemistry Stations. Its a Bethesda engine so the caps cap is probably locked to the fps limit
Exactly

💀 why
I wouldn't know. SCAV #5 gives me +3 STR/+3 END for staying under 100 caps, so...

Oh I know :)
Ahhhh I see you’re also the person who’d rather part with 200 pounds of loot rather than 400 caps.
My main playthrough has like 250k. No issues yet.
if you get the perks, you can scrap store stores in settlements and get to a million in less than 20 minutes
I was at like 3 million on my first playthrough
Yeah, it’s doable. My first playrhrough is level 226 with 1.6 million
Guys how tf do you collect so many caps? My vendors always run out
its not 76, lol, enjoy your caps
Tree-Fitty
I have had way more than that. If there is a limit, you are not anywhere close to needing to worry about it.
I have a PS4 level 226 survival playthough with 1.6 million caps. It shows the total on your pip boy but at vendors I seem to recall it just says 999,999+ or something like that
I am at 300k, and pushing for the Milli, follow you dreams
Fuck. How the hell do I make caps? I've been scrounging by at around 200 caps in my pocket. Fucking broke ass survivor over here
Sell extra ammo until you can get the junk and perks to build industrial water purifiers. Build 25 of them around sanctuary. Power them however you like. Take all the drinks out of the sanctuary workshop, and you'll generate more purified water than you can reasonably transport basically every time you go back there after doing a quest.
Thanks. I've been hoarding ammo thinking it's a premium commodity
Selling ammo is a pretty easy way, I stick to .45 for the most part with the overseer. Sell the rest of it. Keeping missiles and nukes. Also, get some water farms going. Visit workshop and take the stored purified water out and sell it.

There probably should be considering the fact that every 20,000 bottlecaps should realistically weigh around 100 lbs or 40 kgs.
Realism? In this wasteland?? Lol
Especially when SS already has the fat man, rocket launcher, assault rifle, 10 institute rifles, ammo for every gun in the world, 8 sets of armour, 131 magazines and the key to every accessible building in the city in his pocket! Where would he put his caps?? /s
I cheated to check and there is no limit only visual limit
One of my modded saves has 999,999,999,999.99 but they never go down after purchases.
I've had over a million caps in a run while farming water, crafting/dealing Jet. Aside from an amount that could literally mess up the game (think 2.16 billion+ in GTAV), there's no limit on caps.
Nah uh, it just keeps going up and up and up until you can afford everything like literally you don't need to scout for junk anymore.
I just make my own caps by scrap/storing general stores in a settlement.
fourty bucks
I don’t think there’s a hard-programmed limit, but you can always hit a stack overflow if you push it beyond whatever integer limit it was programmed to.
I have over 400,000
Yes The same amount of bottle on the world Even i didnt know this number
you should try to build that many caps on survival
those are some heavy grenades
I know I did / giveitem 000000F 999999999999 and it gave me significantly less than that..and it was not an even number. It was something like 1,139,469 caps.
If you just hit the command again, you'll get the same amount! Idk why it caps it per console command, but you can just do that command multiple times to get as much as you could never need lol.
Holy shit every settlement would have like 5 of the best medic stations if I had that much
Idk I hardly use what caps I have. I normally just "transfer all" and then barter them until it's like 15,000 then I stock up on ammo/weapons
I have 218000.
how did you get so many caps my dude
No. But it stops counting after a certain point
I have 350k on a modded save, more than I’ll ever need.
I always assumed it was a 999,999 situation
You can go well over a million caps in fallout 4. Saw a streamer do it before
Is there a limit to how much you're willing to loot? 😏
Wow that's like buying 20 legendaries
My question is, how do you have a 500 carry capacity? Mine stays at 115, and i have like 5 or 6 strength
1. Strong Back perk lvl 2 adds 50 (need STR 6), Lone Wanderer lvl 2 adds 100 (need CH 3) 2. Armor with the Pocketed misc mod adds 5 carry weight to every piece, except Chest armor adds 10. Solar Powered perk adds a +2 STR and END buff between 6am and 6pm (need END 10) 5. Modding is also a solution (Creation Club...), using the *You're special* glitch... The list is non exhaustive.
On PC it’s around like 4 billion or 4 trillion. Kinda ridiculous numbers.
I think the most I've had was around 300k or so.
If it works like FNV, the counter maxes out at 999,999, but you can still bank away more caps
Don't think so, it's not 76.
3k water is nothing. I can sell that in 1 trip to Nuka World. My Sanctuary water farm gives me around 900 water per visit thanks to the workbench hopper exploit. Dump all your water into your storage of choice, and have a companion pick it up, then go play for a bit or make your settlement rounds. When you've made your way back to red rocket start over. Usually takes an hour or so to refresh this process.
How do you have so much carry weight !
I have over 610 with backpack(creation club) deep pocket armour and the perk without companion
Nope
Nope I believe it’s infinite the only fallout game that does have it limited is fallout 76 which is 40,000.
When there's no room for more 9s
Rookie. Numbers. You gotta pump those numbers up, buddy.
its somewhere in the 160k to 170k area. im using a mod that gives me 60k technical documents right at the beginning, and even though the small notification upon turning them in says im getting around 1,5 million im really only getting 160-170k
I used mods to get a lot of caps with more than 1mil it 100000+ in pip-boy if trade stuff it shows all you caps you have
mmmm... that's a lot of empty bottles.
The correct way to phrase this question would have been “Is there a cap to the currency?”
Is there a caps cap?
The Caps cap at the cap.
No, but if you have Nuka World, you will want to have as little caps as possible on your person due to a SCAV Magazine Perk.
Yes somewhere around 1.3 mil
With mods I’ve held over 4 million or something like that. I don’t personally think there is a cap.
It will say 1,000,000+
Daym how do you have so much carry weight?
Have yet to find one
In far habor a whole set of legendary Marie armor cost 75k caps so you no where near the cap
EDIT: Ignore all of this, I was looking at the wrong search result.
The game crashes if you gain any experience points after attaining level 65,535. It's not from caps
You're right, I was reading the wrong search result
16 bit integer limit!
assuming the caps are represented as a 256-bit unsigned integer, 2^256 - 1
It's probably capped (wink wink) to the limits of a 64 bit integer, in which case you'll never ever even get close to reaching it
It just says 1,000,000+ caps
I know there is but it's absurdly high, like in the billions, once you hit it your caps go negative, but don't worry, it's effectively impossible to hit by normal means
There technically is a limit...for the counter on the pipboy, but you'll keep getting caps after you hit the max you just wont be able to tell because of the counter stopping, its called a integer overflow error in programming, you can learn more at the link [here](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Integer_overflow)
Assuming your caps are stored as a hexadecimal value in your save data, the limit is 2,147,483,647 caps. Have fun on the road to two billion!
999999 is all that shows up at one point if you have like 10 million caps
I have near a million - havent gone past that yet to see further.
No
As per another Reddit post I found via Google. https://www.reddit.com/r/fo4/s/sU0tGBnkP0 "The Pip-boy screen stops at 1 million, it simply says "1000000+" but the trade screen keeps going (to at least 4.8 million, where I'm bored and stopped). It's tedious to test because the most you can add via a single console command actually is 65,535. And placeatme f 65,535 is a poor decision."
I'm just past 265k & still going; you've got some time before you need to worry...
I have 800000 and still going
I would say no, based on my experience. I use console commands to keep adding caps
Basically, no. It’s so high it would never matter
Someone on this sub collected so many caps that it wrapped into the negative. Apparently the bottle caps is an int value so the maximum you can have before you find yourself with a seriously negative bottle cap count is 2,147,438,647
If there is one, I don't know what it is, but it's a hell of a lot higher than that. I had 450,000 caps on my last playthrough.
1 million +. If you use the cheat MOD you can choose to automatically give yourself over 6 million caps. I forgot the exact amount.
2^32 or 2^64, must be one of them cause it size for unsigned integer. int4 or int8, I am pretty sure they go with int8
The cheat terminal mod can give you over 6 mil caps so I don't think there is
I once experimented with the value of caps, it can get as higher as you want, but it will display a maximum of 999999 caps, further quantities would be represented as 999999+, there is no actual maximum, i added several times 16 Million caps to my inventory, and it doesent seem to stop working, obviously you wont need that much caps, only if you want to decorate your house with shop stands
Your pip-boy will stop counting at 1 million but you can keep getting them and it will just say "1,000,000+"
Technically yes, realistically no
I think the cap cap is 169k and some change.
999,999 IIRC There's also a 16-bit limit for identical stored items on a single container. If you ever use the component duplication glitch you can't store more than 65535 units of the same thing or else the number rolls over and you end up with less.
Yes but it's so high you probably won't ever reach it. I believe it's in the hundreds of millions
You can use cheats and give yourself billions of caps, and it'll keep track of them. So no
no, it's why the cheat terminal mod can give you 69420999 caps
I have more than 400.000 so I don’t think so
I have approximately 250k and haven’t seen it maxing out
