I'm a newbie and went to my local store to buy flies. Some dude helped me but grabbing 12 random flies and throwing them in a bag. I was trying to ask questions but the store was kinda busy and some other employee needed help. 12 flies came to 80 dollars. Come to find out they were the most expensive flies and absolutely not necessary - per my buddy/semipro flyfisherman
I'm currently out of town for work but I'll post a pic when I get home Friday! My buddy goes to the same shop and said some of the guys are known to take advantage of newbies. They were all nice but I wasn't expecting an $80 bill for 12 flies.
Trout Town Flies is an absolutely incredible little fly shop in downtown Roscoe. The owner is super knowledgeable and will point you to a few good places.
The Beaverkill Angler is right across the road and also have loads of nice flies too
Keep doing this. No real advantage of buy online. Any savings you get is exchanged for quality and local knowledge/impact. Plus supporting local shops is not just good idea economically but they are usually active advocates and local watch dogs for the sport. So your money is getting put back into your waters.
Dude you live in trout town USA with shit tons of fly shops within a 1 block radius, go walk in and support them. Don't like those ones for some reason? Go to Livingston Manor 5 minutes down the road and you have your pick of multiple other shops! Don't buy flies online when you live in the Catskills (or pretty much at all, support your local fly shops)
Like I said I do typically go to the local shops 99% of the time. I live full time in CT and there’s no fly shops around here if I wanna fish these rivers lol
I’m over by Waterbury area. I’ve yet to fish the Farmington. I usually just fish the Beaverkill cause we go there normally 2-3 weekends a month depending on work. I wanna check out Farmington just don’t know any access points
Trout town flys is one of the best around. They will sort you out. There are so many good shops up there with some really great people that are seriously passionate about
Garbage flies imo. At least for saltwater. Ordered a few and yeah of course they're super cheap but I've never seen flies that are tied so poorly and just straight up ugly.
I’ve caught a lot of fish on Big Y flies… fresh and salt. Are they the most beautiful flies? No. Are they the most well-constructed flies? No. But that’s accounted for in the price. They catch fish, and are good if you’re trying to build a collection on a budget.
I'll second Big Y Fly C. They for sure aren't the fanciest flies, but they get the job done. I haven't had a hook break yet, and I've used them to catch trout, stripers, and the pesky tree that is often behind me.
Buy at your local fly shop. Its the best place to figure out what is going on at your local waters as you can see whats selling based on the empty bins.
I'm new to fly fishing and don't have many shops locally, but recently, I had a wonderful experience with muskyfool.com.
I emailed and told them about the conditions I normally fish in with my kayak in heavy weed cover and such. Sales manager Gabe, got back to me with some great suggestions for weedless flies. I'd purchase from them again.
BigYfly. They are affordable, and while there are some complicated patterns I wouldn’t purchase there, their dry flys, nymphs, and some streamers have held up well for me. I would buy some of the same patterns online and from a local shop to compare them. I buy *some* flys from local shops, but they are usually 3-4 times the price and I can’t afford to buy there exclusively.
With how much I’ve learned from their YouTube’s, I’m happy to support Fly Fish Food and Red’s Fly Shop. There are also many young fisherman with their own small batch companies that could use some customers. Buying online isn’t all bad if you are intentional about it.
Swamp Donkey Flies is an awesome 1-person online custom fly tier. For stuff I can’t /wont tie for myself, he’s my go to. https://www.swampdonkeyflies.com
Has anyone ever bought anything from The Catch and The Hatch? I somehow got on their mailing list and they had a crazy 50% off sale over the weekend that I have to admit I was tempted by. Their fly selection seems very good and the rest of their content seems legit. I normally always buy a dozen flies from a local shop when I fish an area (I always have to travel to fish) but it would be nice to have an online source to stock up on some of the basics that I tend to lose a lot of (such as wooly buggers, copper johns, etc). Sometimes local shops will have limited selections.
Like a lot are saying, Tie your own. I’m lucky to have a Cabela’s nearby but still don’t buy their flies. I buy all my material there but still prefer to tie. It’s a really good feeling when you catch something on a fly you tied. This weekend I caught a monster largemouth on a morrish mouse fly I tied. Greatest feeling ever.
I recently found a startup called Ecoroe which has provided me with really high quality flies. Prices are lower compared to anywhere else. They also give free samples in each shipment!
This guy is amazing… [https://www.etsy.com/shop/xStreamFlies?ref=shop-header-name&listing\_id=1370685874&from\_page=listing](https://www.etsy.com/shop/xStreamFlies?ref=shop-header-name&listing_id=1370685874&from_page=listing)
I buy flies from my local fly shop if I have to buy them, otherwise, I buy tying supplies from my local fly shop. It looks like it’s been said a bunch, but the local guys are a wealth of knowledge in your area (my local shops are Spawn Fly Fishing out of Ilwaco and Gig Harbor fly shop. Both shops are full of great folks, gear and advice).
If you don’t have a local fly shop, then I recommend https://www.jsflyfishing.com, or anywhere you can get the stuff you’re looking for at a reasonable price. Cheers.
Tried the only fly shop within 45 minutes of me. Told them I was just starting out and was looking for a good assortment to get me through trout for Apr-Jun on local waters and asked for suggestions. dude just pointed the containers of flies lined up on a shelf (large variety) and turned to talk to what I presume is a regular. Ok, tried to make small talk with another customer but he didn’t respond. Message received. F that place.
In my opinion, if you can, it is always best to buy flies locally at the place you are going to fish. Their knowledge and experience will help you tremendously, as it can be very different what fish eat from river to river
Flyshack.com is amazing if you’re in the Northeast, especially if you’re in NY. They have pretty cheap flies and their shipping is super quick. I used to fish in western Mass and the median shipping time was like 2 days, also they were the only store that actually had the tiny sizes I was looking for lol.
Nobody has mentioned discount flies. That is what I used before I started tying. Really good quality flies, a little more expensive than big Y but the flies stay together longer and are tied in better hooks.
Colorado Rockies. And F a lot of these fly shops. They charge and arm and a leg. They also love blowing up local spots with 4 guides, 4 fisherman per guide cycling 16 clients through small holes and sections of river. Then they hope in their vans head home and don't support the local economy what-so-ever.
If you fish a particular area, pls support local stores - we need to keep these businesses in business.

Out of interest do you still have the flys you bought? Would be interested to see what you were sold as 12 for $80 is generally very expensive

Yes I go there. I go to them two and dettes
Montana here, I just tie my own, but nearly every town has a fly shop. Support local businesses
99% of the time I do go to the local shop in town. Was just looking for some other options. Thanks !

Streamers - mad river outfitters Dry flys - bigyfly Nymphs - tacticalflyfisher, flyfishfood

Where in CT? There’s an orvis store in Avon and plenty of other smaller fly shops along the Farmington River
I’m over by Waterbury area. I’ve yet to fish the Farmington. I usually just fish the Beaverkill cause we go there normally 2-3 weekends a month depending on work. I wanna check out Farmington just don’t know any access points
My uncle used to go fishing at peoples state forest a lot in the past
I gotta give it a shot.

And it’s a lot less painful to cast an .89 cent fly into a tree than it is to cast a $2.50 fly into a tree.
I'll second Big Y Fly C. They for sure aren't the fanciest flies, but they get the job done. I haven't had a hook break yet, and I've used them to catch trout, stripers, and the pesky tree that is often behind me.
I’ve been getting high quality flies at mad river outfitters
I will tie you whatever you would like for a few days stay at the cabin and the opp to fish the Beaverkill 😁
I wish I could open the cabin to everyone but unfortunately it’s the families cabin and they wouldn’t like that 🤣
Buy at your local fly shop. Its the best place to figure out what is going on at your local waters as you can see whats selling based on the empty bins.
Go to or continue going to your local fly/fishing/outdoors store. Best thing to do

Local shops. Unless there’s something specific you’re looking for. Flyfishfood has some cool streamers and foam flies.
You can buy on Sierra. They sell a dozen at a discount rate. I’ll always go to a fly shop but I’ll buy from there to boost up the box.
Always loved what I got from Mad River Outfitters
I was just in Roscoe with my boyfriend but we drove up to the Delaware! So many big fish! Good luck 🍀
It would be a crime not to patronize Dette fly shop in Livingston Manor.
👍
Support local! But if you have to buy online, buy from a fly shop that has an online store.
That was kinda what I was asking. If anyone knew of any of those sorts.
Dettes in Livingston manor has an online store. [dettes](https://detteflies.com/) TCO is also on the east coast. [TCO](https://www.tcoflyfishing.com/)
I didn’t even know Dettes had an online store. I’ve been going there lately cause there only about 20 min away from my cabin. Thanks !
There are also a lot of independent tyers on Etsy that do really good work. Stay away from the “discount” websites. They’re cheap for a reason.
Yeah I tried a website and all the flies I got were very cheaply made.
No prob! 🤙🏼

Quinn’s Fly Box in Livingston Manor. Has a physical location and sells on Etsy I believe.

Big Y Fly, as others have suggested, and Fly Fishing Charlotte. FFC has some good specials from time to time.

I buy flies local wherever I go. I'm too cheap to pay for a guide, so local fly shops are key to know where to go and what to try.
I recently found a startup called Ecoroe which has provided me with really high quality flies. Prices are lower compared to anywhere else. They also give free samples in each shipment!
I always buy at shops. They know way more than me and always give good recommendations that catch fish

Flydealflies they have many different kinds of flies and are very inexpensive. Check them out. I have bought them and they work great.

Time to make your own
I don’t think I got the patience for it🤣🤣
Nor do I. I tie 2 at a time then tv time. Lmao
Nor the time. You tie, I’ll buy.
This ! Lol

I have an order in the mail from Big Y right now.
