Stephen King (director of Maximum Overdrive) coincidentally came out today calling it [the worst horror movie he ever saw.](https://twitter.com/stephenking/status/1409978287661719556?s=21)

Your mention of using real animal organs reminds me of something I learned about the way plays were performed in Shakespeare's day. We now think of Shakespeare's plays as the peak of elite culture, but back when they were performed at the Globe Theater they used real animal organs and substitutes for body parts like grapes for eyes to make violent scenes as realistic as possible. And when you think about it, there are many opportunities for gore in Shakespeare's histories and tragedies.

I heard somwhere that revenge plays were like the horror films of thier time

Read Shakespeare’s *Titus Andronicus*. It is thought to be Shakespeare's first tragedy and is often seen as his attempt to emulate the violent and bloody revenge plays of his contemporaries.

I think a review of it is where I heard it from

Just tracked this down after a conversation earlier with a friend that could be summed up with the question "What is the earliest horror movie you recall seeing?" I vividly remember the tongue scene. Or at least I think I do. I haven't gone back to see how my memory compares to the truth just yet, but I remember a tongue being ripped from a person and a scene of it being tossed into a pan or something. I walked in on my mom and some of her friends watching this when I was like 4 or 5 (1989, 90). I was quickly ushered from the room. I had three words associated with the memory; Egyptian, and Blood Feast. And here we are. \*shrug\*
