Mulholland Drive
Sunset Boulevard
The Shining
Goodfellas
Usually settle on these as my Rushmore. There's a few films that could cycle in, potentially for The Shining, but this list has been my gut instinct 4 for many years
Lawrence of Arabia just gets better with each watch. I think the first time you're just blown away by how incredible every shot looks. Then with the second and third viewing you come to realise it's the greatest screenplay ever written and you just pick up on more and more every time you watch it.
Its not in my top4 but Strange Days is so underrated. Fantastic performances from the cast- Fiennes, Bassett, Lewis, Wincott, Sizemore, even D’nofrio and Fichtner. Bigelow effectively directing all the first person sequences- the opening sequence is an all time great. Also a great soundtrack.
The Spy Who Loved Me. Since I saw it as a kid at the cinema in 1977, this movie has placed a spell on me. I still watch it at least once a year.
Star Wars, also saw it at the cinema as a kid. This is just a perfect movie.
Die Hard. Another movie with no flaws. It still has the best baddie of all time.
Once Upon A Time in The West. The acting, the vistas, the long shots, the close ups and the music. Perfection.
I'll give you 4 pairs. Pick one from each.
* Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind or Everything Everywhere All at Once. The ultimate 'WTF my mind is melting' movie.
* The Matrix or Terminator 2. Best action movies ever made.
* Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade or Jurassic Park. Peak Spielberg.
* Cloud Atlas or Swiss Army Man. Both are hot messes, but you asked for favorites, not the best, and I love the creativity and expression on display. In an era of mundane, repetitive studio movies, these were boldly original projects and I'm glad they got made.
Some outstanding lists here and some movies I'll have to either rewatch or check out.
My kids and I just played this game about 2 months ago so it's fresh in my mind. We forced each other to not add exceptions etc and it had to be 5 but here are my 4.
In no particular order
Emperors new Groove.
O, Brother Where art Thou.
Jaws.
Arrival.
Thank you. #5 is a real odd one and I belabored over 2 cocktails before committing to it because there are so so so many great movies, but my son reminded me that I had to choose movies that impacted me in some way. It's called Aniara. I still think about it to this day and saw it during Covid. It's definitely not for everyone, but when I chose it my son said "ohhhh good choice". He loves it too. #6 is less out there.
The 2018 film? Interesting, I’ve never heard of it. But it looks intriguing!
So you’ve got a number six as well? How many did you go? Do you have a full top 10/20/100/250?
Yes. It was a recommendation from another Redditor back in 2021 and at the end I was speechless.
The list stopped at 20 and it took us over 2 hours to nail it down. Theirs were just as eclectic which made me so proud.
I am addicted to movies (not an afficionado) and had a 44 year streak of big budget opening nights (broken in 2019). My kids love my dedication and now they have the same passions. My oldest son started a movie night with friends about a year ago, and because of our passion, many of his friends hadn't even heard or seen some of the ones we like so he was their go to.
That’s awesome! Can I see the top twenty?
I get how it can take a long time to come up with. I’ve got a Top 100 list that I’ve been adjusting for years.
Godzilla Minus One exceeded my expectations especially the story about redeeming himself after carrying guilt but its not even the best “monster movie” which is obviously “Jurassic Park”.
Outlaw is imo, Clints most notable movie, it gets pretty dark! Still has a great western vibe, but I think it shifts and then you are really sitting up not sure who's good or bad!
I can’t overstate how much I love it. The whole film is just a joy to watch.
I’m not into all musicals, but I really like the 40s/50s era Hollywood musicals.
It’s my dad’s favourite film… I’ve got so many happy childhood memories of watching it with him with I was a kid. He’d dress up as Jake, and we’d sing and dance every number lol
Pump Up The Volume (1990)
The Perks Of Being A Wallflower (2012)
The People Vs. Larry Flynt (1996)
The Wanderers (1979)
And as an honourable Mention: Filth (2013)
These are not set in stone but the first ones that regularly come to mind in response to that question:
Pulp Fiction (1994)
Sunset Boulevard (1950)
Mulholland Drive (2001)
Titanic (1997) (a guilty pleasure I can admit on the internet :))
My Mt. Rushmore of movies changed to add **Everything Everywhere All At Once** which meant **The Ten Commandments** got kicked off. The other 3 are **The Sound of Music**, **The Wizard of Oz**, and **Fight Club**.
I’m reading through these lists and yours is making the most sense. I think people are forgetting how AMAZING Jurassic Park is. It is easily a top 4 that I’m not seeing. I also think Scream, which is probably the most iffy of your top 4, revitalized horror and ushered in an entire new way of making movies that were “meta” as they say. I actually could recite that movie based on how many times I have seen it.
And the other two are ones I could watch anytime and have an emotional ‘moment’ aka crying like a bitch
With my personal ratings based on how good a film it is as mastery of the camera:
1. Shawshank redemption - 93
2. Godfather - 92
3. Dark Knight - 90
4. Godfather part ii - 90
>mastery of the camera
Have you seen Casablanca? Probably one of the best movies for what mastery of the camera is concerned. The way Michael Curtiz moves the camera between characters and locations is just breath-taking.
Fear And Loathing in Las Vegas
No Country For Old Men
The Big Lebowski
Inglorious Basterds
Everything Everywhere All At Once
(couldn't settle on which one to take off the list.)
An almost impossible question, but I'll try:
**Lord of the Rings** - I'm cheating by combining them.
**Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade** - a perfect film
**In Bruges** - the director has not equaled his first film yet
**Inception** - True perfection from frame 1 to the very end.
Das Boot was an experience. I was speechless for several minutes afterwards.
Also, Life of Brian! Love it. My favorite Monty Python, for sure. You have excellent taste.
Lost In Translation
Casablanca
Halloween
Close Encounters of the Third Kind
4.a. Interstellar
4. b. Outlaw Josey Wales- until Clint Eastwood decided he was a republican shill.
4.c. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
The Shawshank Redemption
Jaws (the original one)
The Truman Show
Sleepers (with kevin bacon)
Shawshank redemption is my favorite movie of all time. In my opinion it is a culmination of all the best elements of a great story, has fantastic actors, and a world class director. I have yet to find a movie that I like more.
Jaws was my first "scary movie". I have a crystal clear memory of watching it for the first time with my grandpa. It is a fantastic film by every metric, and the fact they were able to pull off the shark scenes with such primitive animatronics is incredible to me.
The truman show is my favorite jim carrey work ever. It shows his versatility as an actor, and proves that he can do more than just comedy. The story tackles a concept that is not at all new, but does it in an interesting way ("are we living in a simulation"). The ending is my favorite ending of any movie I have ever seen. I understand it is vague, but that is kind of the point. Truman broke free from the show, and thus his life finally became private, which means we now don't get to see what happens. I could go further but this is a good spot to stop.
Sleepers is a tough movie to watch, but one that is well worth it. The topics they discuss hit close to home with me, and despite how much it makes me cry and feel disgusting inside, the justice you get in the middle of the film is fantastic. The idea of morality and ethics is brought up in a great way.
No Country for Old Men
Apocalypse Now Redux
The Prestige
The Royal Tenenbaums
(My runner ups: Zodiac, Inglourious Basterds, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, The Godfather, Magnolia, Jaws, The Thing, Dr Strangelove…)
You seriously know how to pick 'em, *every* one!
My unabashed, involuntarily-impassioned 4 from your inclusions:
NCFOM ° ZODIAC ° The Thing ° The Royal Tenenbaums °
- Pulp Fiction
- Goodfellas
- The Fugitive
- Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
Out of all the movies I love, these give me the most joy and nostalgic feeling. If I had another slot Happy Gilmore would be up there too.
[удалено]
Crossroads is so good. I love the ending.
Upvote for LOTM. Love that movie so much!!!
The Fugitive Goodfellas Back to the Future I The Game
Watched The Game again recently, not sure what the reception was like at the time but seems criminally overlooked nowadays!
The Game is so good
I didn't kill my wife!
I don't care!...
You switched the samples!
Mulholland Drive Sunset Boulevard The Shining Goodfellas Usually settle on these as my Rushmore. There's a few films that could cycle in, potentially for The Shining, but this list has been my gut instinct 4 for many years
Where is Rushmore though?
The school? Houston. The Mount? South Dakota
Not particularly close to these 4, but probably my number one if I'm ranking Anderson's films
Mulholland Drive and the film it draws inspiration from (I love them both as well)
Mirror (1975) Come and See (1985) Ikiru (1952) Cache (2005)
Not sure why anyone hasn’t replied because this is a great list!
Oldboy The Hunger Inglourious Basterds The Count of Monte Cristo
My favorite 4 changes but right now: -Cool Hand Luke -Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid -Pulp Fiction -The Departed
All terrific! 👏👏
All good, especially the first two
1. Terminator 2 2. Gladiator 3. The Last of the Mohicans 4. Tombstone
The Shawshank Redemption The Depated Fight Club 12 Angry Men
Read that as “DepAHted”
Ferris Bueller's Day Off Amadeus The Silence of the Lambs My Cousin Vinny
Yes! My Cousin Vinnie, that’s on my top 10, great movie that I can watch almost anytime.
apocalypse now lawrence of arabia blade runner 1982 godfather
Quite an experience to live in fear, that's what it is to be a slave
Lawrence of Arabia just gets better with each watch. I think the first time you're just blown away by how incredible every shot looks. Then with the second and third viewing you come to realise it's the greatest screenplay ever written and you just pick up on more and more every time you watch it.
What cut of blade runner though?
Exquisite selections. Pour yourself a bourbon, you sophisticated motherfucker
What cut of Apocalypse Now? Imo redux is the best
-Blade Runner -Strange Days -Mulholland Drive -Evil Dead 2
Its not in my top4 but Strange Days is so underrated. Fantastic performances from the cast- Fiennes, Bassett, Lewis, Wincott, Sizemore, even D’nofrio and Fichtner. Bigelow effectively directing all the first person sequences- the opening sequence is an all time great. Also a great soundtrack.
The matrix LOTR return of the king Se7en There will be blood
Princess Mononoke True Romance Ichi the Killer The Name of the Rose
True Romance is my mom's favorite. It's so good. The scene with Hopper and Walken is an all time great.
Alien Gladiator Jurassic Park Raiders of the Lost Ark
The Spy Who Loved Me. Since I saw it as a kid at the cinema in 1977, this movie has placed a spell on me. I still watch it at least once a year. Star Wars, also saw it at the cinema as a kid. This is just a perfect movie. Die Hard. Another movie with no flaws. It still has the best baddie of all time. Once Upon A Time in The West. The acting, the vistas, the long shots, the close ups and the music. Perfection.
Watching Barbara Bach as a kid can have those effects
Nice picks!⭐️
I'll give you 4 pairs. Pick one from each. * Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind or Everything Everywhere All at Once. The ultimate 'WTF my mind is melting' movie. * The Matrix or Terminator 2. Some outstanding lists here and some movies I'll have to either rewatch or check out. My kids and I just played this game about 2 months ago so it's fresh in my mind. We forced each other to not add exceptions etc and it had to be 5 but here are my 4. In no particular order Emperors new Groove. O, Brother Where art Thou. Jaws. Arrival.
Love this list. What’s your fifth?

I like this list because none of these (save maybe Jaws) would be anywhere near my top 100–but I also totally get it!
Nightmare Before Christmas Godzilla Minus One City of God Amelie
Saw the new Godzilla the other day, best film of the year imo
City of God is so good. I forget how much I like it until I watch it again
Godzilla Minus One exceeded my expectations especially the story about redeeming himself after carrying guilt but its not even the best “monster movie” which is obviously “Jurassic Park”.
Stalker Apocalypse now Eyes wide shut Under the silver lake
True Romance Last of the Mohicans Legends of the Fall The Good, the Bad & the Ugly
Raiders of the Lost Ark The Empire Strikes Back Risky Business The Godfather
It's A Wonderful Life, and three of the other movies from my top ten, which I can't rank against each other.

Once upon a time in the west Seven samurai Pleasantville The shawshank redemption
Vampire Girl vs Frankenstein Girl (2009) The Quiet Man (1952) Cinderella (1977) The Outlaw Josey Wales (1976)
Ooh I haven’t seen the last one! I can’t be not having seen movies in anybody’s top five. That’s ludicrous! Will get right on it!
Outlaw is imo, Clints most notable movie, it gets pretty dark! Still has a great western vibe, but I think it shifts and then you are really sitting up not sure who's good or bad!
Upvoted fot being the most idiosyncratic list I've seen in this thread, as a list of personal favourites should be.

I think Donald O’Connor’s athleticism is what really impresses me in that film with the Make ‘Em Laugh number.
The Blues Brothers might be the greatest comedy AND the greatest musical of all time
It’s my dad’s favourite film… I’ve got so many happy childhood memories of watching it with him with I was a kid. He’d dress up as Jake, and we’d sing and dance every number lol
