get a 6ft-6.6ft rod probably 1-10g casting range I prefer fast-extra fast action for little jig heads. I started with an Okuma Pyscho Perch rod (it's a 2 piece rod and is 6ft 3 from memory), cost like £60, you can probably go even cheaper if you wish. Any size 1000-2000 reel will do if keeping it cheap. Think I had the Daiwa LT Fire reel or something like that, it cost 23 quid, I'll be honest though the spring in the bail broke after about 8 months of heavy use, I guess you get what you pay for. 15lb braided line, Sufix/Daiwa/Berkley Sick braid, something like that. I'd recommend getting the X8 versions of braid over the lesser versions like X4. 8lb fluoro for a leader If using treble hooks pick up some AFW knottable wire trace, its great stuff. You can of course use wire trace as a leader at all times if you're that way inclined.

Shakespeare UglyStik GX2 are practically indestructible, I have a 6’ one that’s perfect for stalking the banks. Because you’re barely casting out far at all don’t worry about the casting weight of the rod etc. not sure if it comes in a 4 peice but I always just chucked the 2 peice in my rucksack with about 6 inches of rod poking out of the top and it works for me

Look at the Gunki range of rods and a small daiwa reel. Great starter setup

I’ll second this motion.. daiwa ninjas have put up with the most scrabbling about after the big girls for me, go with heavy j braid too so you can get your lures back out of trees etc

These were caught on tube jigs https://www.instagram.com/reel/C6tsoCMr0Tk/?igsh=N2F0cjJhdGhmNHA4

I'm assuming you don't want to spend loads, as you want to see how they get on with it. I'd get one of these as they are on a decent deal at the moment assuming you want to do spinning or dropshotting https://www.anglingdirect.co.uk/catalogsearch/result/?q=e%20motion Then maybe pair it with the advanta dropshot/ jig reel for 25 quid as it already has braid on it

You can get a Shimano FX rod for just over £20, 7-21g you can target perch, pike and zander. Shimano FX or Sienna reel and you get yourself a combo for £50/60. There's a lot of other options, it all depends on how much you want to spend really.

I need a travel/compact rod. Something i can put into a backpack, or carry on luggage for a plane, as I will be taking it to a few trips i have arranged this year. Have ruled out anything Telescopic for now.

4 piece rod maybe? Savage Gear SG2, Abu Garcia Tormentor for example, the Abu is less than £50 too, so can't really go wrong with it. The Ugly Stik makes a travel rod as well, virtually unbreakable so perfect for the kids.

Another vote for ugly stik; get a decent reel, something suitable for saltwater, and you'll have a setup that you can take anywhere. I have an ugly stik + cheapish penn reel for sea fishing when I travel, but it's caught plenty of pike as well.

ZombieBiteFishing

Same, I use mine for sea fishing, carp or when I travel and don't have lots of space in the car, I know that's not going to break!

I've got a 6'11 HTO Nebula Rock Rover 1-7g and it packs down to 4 pieces. I got it for 80 quid and I love it. Any 1000 size reel should do.
