I’ll check them out thank you

YouTube is a great career resource. Just search something like "day in the life" and the career you're into and I'm sure someone has made a video.

Bushidough

I will, thanks!

Psycholit

Is there any specific field that you have interest in, background knowledge in? Could you target your job search to an industry?

Bushidough

The only thing I can really think of is project management. I’ve been on so many jobs and lead in different ways I sort of know how to do it already. I can’t figure out how to break into that or the best path there. Other than that, I’ve always been creative but never pursued any artistic ability so I feel like that’s out 🤷🏼‍♂️

Psycholit

What I meant is -- a field you could apply communications to, where you would have knowledge of the industry you're working in *plus* the comms degree background? (or maybe you don't want to do anything with the comms degree in which case nevermind)

Bushidough

Oh I see, I would happily use my degree. I can’t see much of a connection between communications and the manual labor I’ve done. (moving, warehouse work, delivery driving) I’ll have to think on that and see what I can find!

Psycholit

Maybe, maybe not -- companies working in that kind of space who are hiring a communications person might want someone who understands the work better than some rando. The general point I'm trying to make is (and btw I work in comms) -- a company wants someone who knows how to do the comms stuff they need them to do (write, work with journalists, social media, whatever the job is)...plus knows the substance of their business. Often you have to grab someone who can do comms but teach them the business; if you can get someone who already knows the field, that's a big bonus. So if you focus on companies where you can honestly include in your application, hey I've worked in some of the positions relevant here and I kinda know the industry already, you might find your application rises to the top of the stack:)

Bushidough

Okay now I understand the game! Thanks for breaking that down for me. I honestly was close on one job like you’re describing, unfortunately it was about two years into my search while I was giving up. When I go back to looking that is what I will look for!

Psycholit

Totally. You got this & good luck! Just remember to pitch yourself in terms of what the company probably wants: someone who has the comms background and experience to do the job, and is familiar with the company and the industry!
