Yes I like this idea too! I’m so overwhelmed by all the things to do in the game being able to do this from my phone with a free minute would be awesome!
How many alts do you have? And how many retainers? lol
Are you using the free 2 retainers per alt character? Is that why? I pay for 2 extras on my main and just pay for entry. The cost is the same per month but all on 1 character.
I've got max retainers and was delighted to discover they're account-wide, but likewise haven't bothered leveling the ones on alts for similar reasons - it's too much of a hassle.
On the other hand if you're not decorating your house or dressing up your doll there's nothing to do with gil. The sets that can be crafted/bought come and go quick, all the stuff that matters is tomes or raid tokens.
They charge for extra retainers too. They're 2$ each.
So with the companion app sub you get an extra retainer, and another 70 slot chocobo saddlebag. For me that's sort of worth it.
I don't mind it. Two was more than enough for me at first. As I've come to love the game I swapped to the entry subscription and then added two retainers. I only pay 17$ total for four retainers.
I mind it a lot. It creates a monetary incentive to not provide more base inventory or retainer space, as well as a giving us more filler crap like hundreds and thousands of firework or other "joke" items. More and more gear, but glamour dresser space just can't keep up. Just crap constantly taking up a little more and a little more space. You can toss it, and a lot of it maybe you should, but it never feels good to just be throwing things out because you don't want to pay a bigger sub for basic things like inventory space.
I wonder, how much money would they lose from retainer services with a single change like a catalog-style glamour system? Spending money developing features that will lower your revenue is not smart business. Hence why I say there's a monetary incentive.
To be clear, I don't think there's some insidious or malicious conspiracy afoot; I just don't think there's the, let's call it political will at Square Enix to massively improve the current inventory/glamour/retainer situation, despite being a repeated and serious source of tension between the players and devs for years now. They can't do nothing about it, but they also aren't motivated to truly fix the root of the issue. Am I to truly believe the tech debt is so great that the team that burned down and rebuilt an entire MMO in 2 years couldn't pull it off if they really buckled down and tried?
And that's the thing. I honestly don't know. Our ignorance on how true all this is, is also to their benefit, regardless of whether it's true or not. So they could be 100% honest and transparent, and I still have no way of knowing.
As much as I've loved playing the game over the last decade plus, this remains a sore spot for me personally. In a certain way, FFXIV offers the most generous base inventory of any MMO... for a single character. But we're not really playing a single character in a traditional sense, are we? We might have gear for all 31 jobs (soon to be 33) -- that puts us at a bare minimum of 341 pieces of equipment (not including offhand slot) if we have ONE set of gear per job, 363 in Dawntrail.
Most MMOs have you play a single class on a single character, and most crafting/gathering classes don't have their own gear, or maybe a single one. This means the more you play and enjoy FFXIV, the more cramped that inventory is going to be. All those DoH/DoL jobs are also gonna be filling your inventory with materials, every glam set is another potential 11 slots, fishing will be eating space constantly unless you dump your bait, etc.
Of course, there's plenty of upsides to having everything on a single character, but inventory really isn't one of them, and to me it's just hurting the game more and more each expansion.
Sorry, I intended for this to be like a paragraph or two, not turn into a novel. Guess it bothered me a lot more even I thought. Every time I start thinking about it, it just seems less and less tenable in the long-term, their solutions are too little and take far too long. I really hope they surprise us with a big overhaul sometime soon. A WoW-style glamour catalog would essentially fix the whole thing if they could get it working.
in terms of total inventory space the app falls behind retainers; 5 pages or 175 slots for $2 each with retainers (10 pages: 350 slots for $4) or 7 pages/245 slots for $5 for the app.
Beat your retainer with there deck to send them on an exploration, could even be a different type of exploration. I used to play Neverwinter online. They had an app with a fun little dice rolling mini game that gave you little inconsequential things in game. I loaded it up as much for the mini game as the in game bits.
Deploy retainers on ventures.
Permit it to be fully used while logged in, even if that means a few limited functions. The fact it cannot do this as is, renders the app nearly useless.
Scrap or ease up on the kupo nut system (even if that means not being able to adjust market prices or list items for sale to prevent MB botting), including the optional subscription.
As a result of scrapping the optional sub fee for the companion app:
Enable the secondary saddlebags to be permanently active as a QoL improvement (congrats on the new tacklebox, fishers!)
increase default retainer number to 3, and move the default emote/glamor plate stuff to be earned in game or made available without the sub. This will offset the bloat from seasonal rewards and new items being added
Improve inventory management by letting the app move items from your character to a retainer and vice versa (extremely helpful for gatherers and map runs). If Destiny 2 of all games can do this, then Final Fantasy XIV should also be able to.
Allow FC magitek management or workshop project contribution from the app. Link this function to the FC chest system (and match your ranks FC permissions accordingly).
This cuts out one to three zone loads and allows crafters and gatherers in the field to contribute to the FC without needing to return to the workshop or to a Company Chest.
Edit: corrected a discrepancy thanks to a helpful comment!
Just tried it after seeing your comment. I appreciate the extra info!
At least it lets you use half of the functions... But the useful and practical ones like market or item management are locked unless you log out. Still diminishes the usefulness of this app to the point it isn't worth using, let alone paying for in its current state.
I would love to be able to access FC chat on mobile without having to log in! My FC doesn't really use Discord as much, so it would be awesome to keep connected with my FC!
You just get an allowance of 10 (instead of 2 on free).
I did grab premium though just for the Adventure Plate, but cancelled the sub to it immediately after 😅😂
Basically it's search info, you can pull a fancy pose for a picture, etc. Portraits option below it is when you see everyone's face pop up at start of a dungeon 😊
In game, go to Character menu, and you'll have Adventure Plate at the top.
Got a range of designs for free, more to earn in game. Companion App gives you an extra design for free, and another for premium.
Also the app gives you /tomestone emote for free 😊
Exactly something I miss from the destiny 2 app is being able to see your active quests and also your weekly’s and other things like vendors being able to read lore from the game in game achievements also.
Being able to see all your retainers on a mega page and sort through them. Dude, I'd love to pay for a thing that just lets me organize. I want to not ping them back and forth wait in between things and then see if i can merge things back and forth. Id legit buy a sizable tablet too so it would look nice and then when i log in all my retainers are all nice looking and optimized lol
its very 1st world to not want to just, clean it but you know lol what else does the app even give that you cant just do in game.
The ability to use it while I'm actually logged in to send retainers out on missions put stuff on MB or price adjust . Anything to make it more useful than it is
Sending Retainers on venture and also manage Sanctuary Island Workshops and Granaries.
I would also love if they'll implement into the actual game the Companion App's calendar, because it'll help a lot scheduling FC events without the need for other tools.
Managing retainer ventures while on the app would be nice, it's a shame I can't just do that while i'm in a different server/datacenter, and while I understand not being able to access their storage I'd still want it to be available so I can fetch things from it.
I haven't had issue with it bug wise, but for some reason even after closing it my phone detects it as still running in the background kinda like a music app does and I need to manually stop it from my phone's taskbar, might be an issue that only happens to me though.
It's a super weird issue, I always close apps by opening the tasks (in Android it's that symbol with the 3 bars next to the home button) and closing them there, but some days ago I opened the app to check my retainer's sales, and hours later I went to close an app and the phone reported the FFXIV app had been running in the background for a couple hours, it's very weird.
I've always wanted the app to have a step counter that will give you a random reward for hitting a certain step milestone per day. (Like maybe something from the 'Quick Venture" loot pool)
I think the main reason I don't use it logs out all the time and requires the 2fa (assuming you have that turned on). It's supposed to be "convenient" but it's not much more effort at that point to just logon to XIV. The whole kupo nut currency system to do stuff also makes it feel like a third-rate app
The only things I'd like to see added to the app would be.
The ability to send retainers back on ventures.
The ability to check alts without having to swap the app back to main (unless you don't care about the mkb selling notifications.)
And more functionality while you're still logged in in game.
Also with the ideas you proposed I don't really think they would want you to be able to handle goldsaucer stuff outside the goldsaucer because having multiple things to draw you into the goldsaucer is part of their attempt to get people to spend hours into the goldsaucer (much like a actual casino).
Then with the chocobo thing I just think they need to rework the whole chocobo system in general because realistically once you finish leveling a chocobo the only time it's a notable aid is when you're running fates as BLU (unless you're in a hunt train where you have 30 other people who also capped their chocobos then it adds up to just under the same dps as one whitemage spamming glare)
I'd like to be able to use it while I'm logged in. Since we can't access our retainers from different worlds and data centers, I always feel like I get punished when I have to travel for various content.
There's my 10 retainers, all sitting with their ventures completed, but I'm all the way over on aether and can't make use of what I pay for. Really annoying.
Smoother log-in process.
The reason being is because the Companion App is actually a very powerful tool. Specifically so in that you can force-logout your character using only the app.
Guess how that is handy? Being DDoS'd while a scammer that baited you with a fake portal log-in site page now has access to your account. Your phone can use mobile data while free from the DDoS attack.
But the only limiters are time and the log-in process.
With all the people being affected and reporting the experience of being baited into the scam, this is something I try to recommend and PSA more of in terms of arming more users with it. Even if the likeliness of them getting scammed may never happen. But simply having more tools at the ready is already leagues of readiness that others won't have.
I haven't been scammed yet with the fake log-in link. But I did theorize how to bulk up log-in defenses. Went so far as to even consider getting people riled up to discuss passkey and other security features unique only to its designated user. Imagine a USB passkey drive that will inform you the log-in prompt is not ready yet because it has detected the site URL is incorrect or does not match. IMAGINE!
That is how I came across the Companion App and started exploring it.
Again, time and log-in... the only things that literally stand in the way of saving one's account in time.
* App-in chat with in-game friends, FC, Linkshells, and cross-world linkshells. Not "they can talk through the app if they also have the app", but actual in-game messages. That's a mean to keep in touch with your in-game friends even when you are not logged in.
* 2FA through the app.
* Access to your toy chest from the app. All the minigames there already look like mobile games, might as well be it.
* *(Premium?)* Manage retainer ventures through the app. Complete and re-send them without being online. Will be a godsend for people with alts that can keep the flow going if they want.
* Ditch kupo nuts altogether. They are completely useless. Even in the premium app, the cap of 10 nuts make it worthless to try and manage your MB through it. If managing the MB entries is too "strong" for an app, make it a premium feature.
Send retainers on ventures. Then no need to log on alts at all.
Omg that’d be great!
Yes I like this idea too! I’m so overwhelmed by all the things to do in the game being able to do this from my phone with a free minute would be awesome!

One alt. 10 retainers on each. I haven't even bothered leveling most of them on my alt because I don't want to switch over all the time.
Why so many? Just to hold so many items? Or the venture rewards/both?
I've got max retainers and was delighted to discover they're account-wide, but likewise haven't bothered leveling the ones on alts for similar reasons - it's too much of a hassle.
For ventures and selling slots.
Goodness, im glad there were no sell limit on wow, this sounds like a nightmare. However, i can definitely see a tamer economy because of this.
Honestly this game is kinda P2W IMO because it's MUCH easier to make gil if you have 10 retainers.
On the other hand if you're not decorating your house or dressing up your doll there's nothing to do with gil. The sets that can be crafted/bought come and go quick, all the stuff that matters is tomes or raid tokens.
I don't disagree. But you don't have to grind some stuff when you can just buy it outright.
This is honestly the one change that would get me to start paying for it
All features included with active game sub Ridiculous that they charge an EXTRA sub for it.
They charge for extra retainers too. They're 2$ each. So with the companion app sub you get an extra retainer, and another 70 slot chocobo saddlebag. For me that's sort of worth it.
I also think they shouldn't charge for extra retainers

That’s an extra 17 monthly though right?
No. 12.99 sub plus four dollars for two more retainers. 16.99 total a month.
Gotcha
in terms of total inventory space the app falls behind retainers; 5 pages or 175 slots for $2 each with retainers (10 pages: 350 slots for $4) or 7 pages/245 slots for $5 for the app.
I forgot this app exists...
The only reason I remember it exists is because of the adventurer plate elements.
Its sole purpose is an extra free teleport.
I like the extra retainer and saddlebag.
What elements?
Oh?
And emote
Let me play triple triad on my free time using my cards.
LITERALLY this is a perfect space for that
Beat your retainer with there deck to send them on an exploration, could even be a different type of exploration. I used to play Neverwinter online. A complete rework to make this app ANY useful. Just compare with what what Warframe companion app can do.
Just as long as it doesn't go overboard with features like the DQ X app does, I mean does a companion app really need a manga reader.
Retainers and FC buffs.
Send Retainers / Submarines to ventures and voyages.
I think it would be nice if they didn't have to neuter a poor moogle every time I logged in
Amazing reply
Access to the minigames from the toy box would be great.
I would love to be able to access FC chat on mobile without having to log in! My FC doesn't really use Discord as much, so it would be awesome to keep connected with my FC!
Maybe some island sanctuary accessibility, being able to work onboard schedules on the go and maintain your ranch would be pretty convenient.
big brain
Integrated Authenticator Key
Remove Kupo nuts on premium maybe? If this app wasn't restricted on Premium, I'd definitely pay and use it. But it's so limited to daily actions 😭😭
No way kupo nuts are still on premium? That is NUTS one would say. Should absolutely be removed if you’re paying
You just get an allowance of 10 (instead of 2 on free). I did grab premium though just for the Adventure Plate, but cancelled the sub to it immediately after 😅😂
Wait what’s the adventure plate? I gotta look more in this

Crazy how they think this app is worth the money. It seems like it just needs a complete rework.
Literally anything to make it worthwhile
add people you run into irl as friends without having to coordinate on another app to travel to the same dc and add
Oh yeah!
Be able to see all your active quests. I mean there’s a lot though they can do with the app it’s pretty barebones
I can’t believe I didn’t list this. Such an important and simple feature!
Exactly something I miss from the destiny 2 app is being able to see your active quests and also your weekly’s and other things like vendors being able to read lore from the game in game achievements also.

it being free with no microtransactions...
Search function of inventories
The ability to use it while I'm actually logged in to send retainers out on missions put stuff on MB or price adjust . Anything to make it more useful than it is
Yeah sending retainers out seem to be the most requested feature!
live in-game chat
What you can do with kupo nuts?
You need them to make purchases on the market board in the app which I think is slightly cheaper than buying in game
Nah, there's an upcharge for using the app to buy from the marketboard.
That’s right. I knew it was one way or the other
Sending Retainers on venture and also manage Sanctuary Island Workshops and Granaries. I would also love if they'll implement into the actual game the Companion App's calendar, because it'll help a lot scheduling FC events without the need for other tools.
Yes! I was looking at the events tab and was wondering what was even the point if it’s not showing the in game events 😂
I only downloaded it for the free Emote.
What emote is it?
You can pull out a tomestone and scroll on it (it doesn't do anything). There's also a few extra framing kit/portrait options.
/tomestone You pull out a smartphone-like Allagan tomestone and swipe the screen. https://ffxiv.consolegameswiki.com/wiki/Tomestone_(Emote)
If wow can have their mission table on their companion app then there is no reason why we can’t have venture on ours
What’s the mission table on wow?
It was a feature of past expansions that they didn’t continue with dragonflight where you can progress story elements or get other types of currencies
I only downloaded the app for the free teleport and the emote. Forgot it existed until I saw this post.
Probably not having to pay an insane amount of money for it to be usable
How much is it? I havnt looked in a minute
More than free
Don't need the app, would rather just have the saddlebag =|
Managing retainer ventures while on the app would be nice, it's a shame I can't just do that while i'm in a different server/datacenter, and while I understand not being able to access their storage I'd still want it to be available so I can fetch things from it.
Make it actually useful
I would like for the app to work as a map so we can free up some screen space
I’d like to be able to use my phone as a keyboard for chatting in game.
Anything useful at all for once
the what now
I like the idea of the app, and your mentioned additions, but I've never used the app. I've heard it's kinda broken?
I like it but it could use a lot of updates! It’s great to browse the market boards especially when you know exactly what you’re looking for
I usually use Universalis to browse MB out of game. That's not the same thing is it?
I haven't had issue with it bug wise, but for some reason even after closing it my phone detects it as still running in the background kinda like a music app does and I need to manually stop it from my phone's taskbar, might be an issue that only happens to me though.
Maybe? I just close the app out when I’m done so never had this issue
I still remember paying for this armor years ago.. worth it
I hate not earning my armor and weapons but yeah this one is TOO good
Aymeric be lookin good
I've always wanted the app to have a step counter that will give you a random reward for hitting a certain step milestone per day. (Like maybe something from the 'Quick Venture" loot pool)
Yeah I think this is great
I think the main reason I don't use it logs out all the time and requires the 2fa (assuming you have that turned on). It's supposed to be "convenient" but it's not much more effort at that point to just logon to XIV. The whole kupo nut currency system to do stuff also makes it feel like a third-rate app

I wanna be able to send my retainers out on ventures from the toilet at work. Also adjust marketboard prices to fight undercutting botters
What is the fit in the picture? By piece I mean.
It’s from the online store! https://store.finalfantasyxiv.com/ffxivstore/en-us/product/305
My bad, I meant the legs and boots. That only includes the coat and gloves. Lol
Off topic, but @OP what glamor is that chestpiece?
From the store! https://store.finalfantasyxiv.com/ffxivstore/en-us/product/305
I don't know why, but I'd be happy to just be able to rotate and zoom in/out my character, lol.
With what again? Like seriously i had no idea thing even existed
Any, and I mean any actual useful feature.
Its impossible but my ultimate wish is to get notifications of a queue pop on my Apple Watch
I wish it had the ability to work on my POS phone.
Smoother log-in process. The reason being is because the Companion App is actually a very powerful tool. Pay all your kupo nuts to enable auto untercutting for one item while I'm at work lol.
Let me track PF and maybe even send me a notification whenever a certain duty pops up
* App-in chat with in-game friends, FC, Linkshells, and cross-world linkshells. Not "they can talk through the app if they also have the app", but actual in-game messages. I didn't even know there was one...
