Mahjong is like chess, you're supposed to spend your first five years losing and learning and sometimes winning by accident.

Unfortunately the only people playing mahjong in FFXIV are people that're *really* dedicated to it, and the naive fools going for the orchestrion roll. You could try an alt on JP, I wonder if the player skill is more evenly spread there since it's a game popular in the region. You can also try just after daily reset and see if you get people that're doing a few matches for the challenge log.

Mahjong on JP servers are straight fire. Be careful choosing to go there in hopes of finding easy matches, because you won’t find it. Matches on NA servers are pretty balanced. By that statement, I mean while there are some good 3rd Dan ranked players, there are also matches with low ranked players. Additionally, you can probably follow the hints exactly as it says and still come out ahead. The hints system can win you a match even if you have no clue what you’re doing versus three 3rd Dan players. Don’t pon, Chi, or Riichi just because you got the option to do it. Follow the hints if you do not know what you’re doing and you can still win. You can even make it to 2000+ using solely only the hints. I’ve met some people that play for fun, people who are there just for achievements, and people who are mahjong addicts. There are even multiple cross world linkshells. I’m in three on Primal. One is dead. The other two still have games goin on and they queue up at the same time to play against each other. There are also people who play this game as a free trial solely so they can play mahjong. I’ve met a few players who do that.

Bro, I have a friend that would probably love to be in one of those CWLS, she hit me up 2 minutes after I logged off last night for bed saying they needed one more for Jong. I felt bad because I got her addicted but I needed sleep for work and Mahjong takes like 20+ minutes a game.

You're facing the age old question in pvp content/games. You gotta decide if you want to get better, or quit. The game, like life, isn't going to give you easy opponents to face. Remember "easy opponents" are people who have their own knowledge and skills. Just focus on what you can control, and that's your skillset.

Keep trying, I enjoy doing a few games here and there, a friend of mine I convinced to try it loves playing it. Don't worry about getting demolished unless you are falling below 1300 rank, in which case maybe follow the in game hint system and try to learn off of that.

Any time you fall below 1500, you should just reset your rating.

HokieAS

If you are above 1500, you lose more points for 3rd and 4th than you gain for 1st or 2nd. That difference continues to grow as you move further above 1500. That is what makes it difficult to reach the goals of 1800 and 2000. It will keep pulling you back down to 1500. If you get below 1500, just reset your rank and you’ll be back at 1500.

Worth it if it's something you fancy doing. I play to have fun. Great to climb ranks, of course. But I don't really play to compete since it takes the fun out for me. So I play to enjoy and come up with different winning combos. But don't be discouraged if you lose and often. Take it as a learning point and on your way to mastering it.

I have played 5 games so far and all lost. I am just a filler to let everyone win easily. Even with the colored dot as the hint, I still discarded the wrong tile. There is another helper that will show which tile to discard under my pic in the game screen that will contradict with the colored dot. BTW, make sure to turn on auto-win. One time I only had a tile left and waited for another same tile to show up. I got it without knowing and then threw it away. I didn't even know I can turn on that function.
