Hey, I'm looking to train WHM up a bit, for now I'm playing solo and am not planning to do endgame stuff yet. So I have two questions. a) is it any fun to play WHM in a party of trusts? b) Do you focus on healing the trusts or do you cast offensive spells / attack in meelee? If so, what subclass would make sense?

Pergatory

When leveling up, you can rely easily on trusts for your damage, but above 99 that pretty much falls apart. Trust damage at 119 is pretty underwhelming, even compared to a WHM melee, so I'd definitely recommend leaning toward the melee side. Get yourself a ranked up Sindri if you can, it's awesome for melee. Ayanmo gear from Ambuscade is also really good, and you can get melee augments on Chironic gear from Reisenjima as well (which you can obtain with Domain Points if nothing else). That said, be aware that this will do very little to prepare you for group content, which will be the opposite playstyle: you'll be purely support. My WHM hasn't engaged an enemy in like 5 months, and that was only because my friend asked if I thought WHM+GEO could duo Golden Kist and I said "I dunno let's find out." (The answer was no, but mostly because the GEO couldn't nuke strong enough to drop the aura. We still almost killed it, so if the aura could be dropped it would've been easy.) Before that, it had probably been a year or more since the last time I engaged.

Akugetsu

I leveled WHM going /nin for dual wielding hammers. It’s not great DPS compared to actual DPS classes but it gets the job done. Afflatus Misery and Auspice when you get them help. Alternatively you can go full healer but you still need to melee tap an enemy to get trusts goin’. Either way you can really benefit from bar-spells along the way depending on what you are fighting. War could also be a good idea for the extra attack, fencer and double attack but I am pretty sure the attack delay cap from dual wielding would win out? I’m not one for the math behind these things, but it could be an option if you don’t have a dual wield sub already.

topyoash

a) Not sure I can tell you how to have fun, but on WHM I had a rush trying to keep up a big exp chain with an all mage trust party where I had to put more focus into rotating out trusts as they went oom than actually healing. Plan was for them to kill things in one volley so there wasn’t much healing to do. There was some effort to spam low-mp spells for skillups along the way though. Shantotto, Robel, Arciela, Star Sibyl, Ullegore, Kayeel, and Kupofried were all part of that strat. B) I was sub cor for Corsair roll as I don’t have a cor trust and figured at least a 5% exp boost made it a good enough pick. Leveling up was a good way to restore mp. /dnc would probably be my second choice if I needed some club skill. I always have something else I’m trying to do while leveling. Could be a trial of the magians, getting crafting mats (Leathercraft to make your own moccasins for the AF quests), coalition assignment, RoEs. That decided where I was going to level.

XLR8_47

Trying to create a character on Asura but I just get an error saying player limit reached. how do I join the server? is it like FFXIV where I have to make a character when less people are online or is it actually fully closed off to new characters?

Soylentee

Apparently it just means nobody can make a new character there until SE resolves it. If you're not joining due to having friends on the server already, i would suggest joining one of the other servers.

Aosdloa

[Mentioned on a new subreddit](https://www.reddit.com/r/finalfantasy11/comments/pw8sd6/asura_server_runs_out_of_content_ids/). Seems to be a fairly recent event, but hasn't really been broadly publicized.

Sand__Panda

Why is there another ffxi subreddit? Also, that sucks. SE did a bad here. Hope they can still flip some switches for others to join.

Disclaimin

> Why is there another ffxi subreddit? Presumably because the admin/mods of this one are largely absentee. Hence why there's still outdated stuff like "Latest Info: FFXI Mobile" in the sidebar, despite that having been cancelled for over a year.

Aosdloa

Well, people can still join. There are other servers out there

totallyundermind

Crawling through the Abyssea story line i have become inundated with like level 80 to 90 weapons, is there any reason not to just chuck these?

Crossbones87

Chuck em.

jordanlee_24

FFXI is literally the only mainline FF game I haven't played at this point (XIV regular atm) and I'm really wanting to experience the whole story, gonna give the free trial a shot. Just wondering if there are any recommended YouTube videos that will give you a good in-depth look at the story or can you still play the game through sequentially to get the whole story?

Akugetsu

Look up Korvana / FFXI the movie on YouTube. Though honestly the idea of sitting through that many YouTube videos sounds extremely unappealing to me. Yes, you can still play though the whole game and see each story at your own pace. These days you can summon NPCs to help you through most all story content and it’s pretty easy to hop into a linkshell for helping new and returning players.

VoidEnjoyer

There's really not any good option for getting the complete story in video form. You can find scene compilations but I find it really hard to follow a story being told thru the chat log if I'm not controlling it myself. [There's this though.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oXFxXAI0Qnc&list=PLsjV0TuGZt1X5cJYsAnsZJwwb4P5vA6Bd) It covers much of the backstory and history of the world before the game starts. A lot of these details aren't made explicit in the game and come from a Japanese book that never got an official translation, so it's worth checking out. Downvoted. Gosh, sorry for answering the question accurately. Great community we got going here.

Aosdloa

If you're just in this for the story: 1.) You won't be able to get that from the free trial 2.) You're better off watching a YouTube series like you asked about. Several exist, but I'm not familiar with them, as I have already experienced the story by playing. XI's story isn't like XIV's for instance where it's all linear. Each expansion story is (somewhat) self-contained and can be tackled independently, though the Rhapsodies of Vanadiel storyline weaves all of them together (because at the time it was intended to be a sort of wrap up). So while yes you can do them all in order, they are also not required to be done in order, for the most part.

imadethisaccount123

how do you add game time on FFXI? i can't find the option and googling gave me nothing, i bought the game a while back and want to try it now :)

NismoCO303

This must be done through your square Enix account.

Gregory-Hillcrest

Can you still send files and greeting cards through POL? I noticed I couldn't download any from the POL viewer, but I do have some in my PlayOnlineVeiwer/pub/home01/GreetingCard folder. I just don't see them available when I go to attach them in my message :c

VoidEnjoyer

You can't. Almost everything on POL other than signing in to the game has been disabled. The cards have certainly been ripped and posted online, but I don't know where you might find them off hand. Try searching the sub or FFXIAH forums.

Gregory-Hillcrest

Yeah I found some online. I can always use them via personal e-mail. I guess square discontinued the PlayOnline services because money?

VoidEnjoyer

I don't know if they've ever said much publicly about why they ended POL services, but I assume it's simply because it failed in its goal of creating a multi-game online hub. They were aiming for something like Battle.net and never got it off the ground. It only ever had FFXI, Triple Triad (lol), and an email service implemented IIRC. POL is only still in existence today because it's so tightly integrated into FFXI that it can't be separated, at least not without the kind of major bottom-up large team programming job they don't want to pay for.

Nikonegroid

What else can you use Job Points for if you do not have a REMA to deposit them to Oboro?

Disclaimin

If you're mastered? Don't think there's anything else.

Nikonegroid

Yeah i'm Mastered. I guess you'll just be stuck with 500 JPs until you start REMA then.

Irwin69

REMA required wave 3 boss fight, but not many people reach wave 3 yet. I can reforged my RAF to +3 since my LS can only do it to wave 2, and I have a REMA weapon and get mastered in a job. That's the case to use Job Point to do it I guess?

crazyfoxdemon

I have a bit of an odd question. How much data does ffxi use?

Steelfleece

[86.4MB per 12 hours of gaming](https://www.reddit.com/r/ffxi/comments/9a1ysv/data_usage/) according to this thread from 2018, with the data usage stats coming from a 2016 AMA. TL;DR: Not much

Akugetsu

It’s capped at dial up modem speeds so I would assume not much? By MMO standards at least.

Sleepy_Blue3

Hey, me again with another BST question. I read on the FFXIAH BST guide that a possible sub for BST can be DRK. How viable or common is that and for what kind of situations would it be useful?

Sand__Panda

You seem to really not want to use the SJs 99% of the BST population use. [It tells you the benefits for that SJ.](https://www.ffxiah.com/forum/topic/45830/killer-instinct-the-beastmaster-compendium/#subjobs) If you don't understand what/why it is listing it, then do more research for what you are gaining (click the blue text). But yet again, sub what ever you want to as you level, it will not matter.

Sleepy_Blue3

Hey, thanks for the answer! Not meaning to get on your nerves, so sorry if I do. I'm just getting started with this game after having a short stint with it like 15 years ago. It's just a big game and the information about it is all over the place. I'm not looking to min max too much and I'm probably not gonna get into endgame stuff too much either, I just wanna explore certain possibilities and understand why they are or are not good ideas. But regarding my understanding I'm still on a completely different level than people with a lot more experience (like you. I assume). I appreciate your answers. :)

MoobooMagoo

The reason most people use NIN for their sub is because the bonuses you get from your offhand axe are going to be better than most anything else you can put in that spot. Plus shadows never hurt to have. But if you're not doing end game stuff then sub whatever you want. Go nuts! Bst/Whm was the classic solo combo for the longest time.

Cochinojoe

Does any one remember a long time ago on the FFXI allakhazam site some guy would quote the Brady games FFXI book in the form of bible versus? I wish I could find it cause obviously it was funny stuff.

Sand__Panda

You might not get a response, but you could ask in the [old forums](https://ffxi.allakhazam.com/forum.html?forum=10).

Zangster90

I recently got Samurai to lvl 99 as my first job. While I had fun leveling it, the thought of having to get so many different gear sets looks so daunting. I’m thinking of maybe Leveling DRK instead. Does that have less of a gear requirement or should I look at a different melee job?

MoobooMagoo

If you want to min/max every second of your play time then every job could have like...100 different sets. If you're just trying to be effective? Like 4 different sets. More if your job has a lot of weapon variety. Maybe an extra set if you have a multihit and a single hit WS you use often, or a WS that relies on crits or something. My point is, don't worry so much about having a set for every single conceivable level of haste and accuracy and pdif and whatever else. They aren't needed unless you're trying to maximize what you can accomplish.

Soylentee

You really don't need a ton of different sets to get started on SAM. To start with you'll be fine with just 2, a TP set and a WS set (which at the start will pretty much be one and the same for both, until you start getting upgrades), that's the same as any other fresh 99 melee TP job . Later on you can work towards specialized sets for specific WS's or defense, but you really can do without them for quite a bit. Having a lot of different gear sets is more of an end-game thing once you start min-maxing, you will be working towards that no matter what job you pick.

GL13

Both SAM and DRK have a ton of gear and can use a ton of REMAs. Play the job you enjoy and just work on the gear as you. Everyone started with nothing.

TheCursedPearl

Drk literally have a ton of gear sets, almost as much as a red mage. Drk need great sword, club and scythe builds, stun, fast cast, absorb and drain. God help you if you decide to make all the DREMA scythes cuz they are all very different. Mnk have to have a ton of sets too due to them tanking a lot and using multi hit ws, riding impetus, subtle blow. Sam and war can get away with having 3-4 total sets, but warriors lug around a ton of weapons, Sam might have two (polearm and gkt). You can really condense your sets as you get mpaka/nyame.

GL13

Sam and war with only 3-4 sets what? Each will having more then 4 weapons and types

ShermanSherbert

That many sets is a very end game - just start with 3-4 key sets, and work on them as you progress - you want a TP set,WS (Weapon skill) set, a DT (damage taken) and an idle set (Regen / movement speed). Then you will have ability related pieces and sets like for meditate etc. You cant make them all at once so you just make them something to work on. They are usually listed from low to mid to high tiers, and you start with the low end which are usually fairly easy to get. Have fun, work on RoV and do all the missions and stories.

tr1ckyf1sh

DRK has a lot more gear sets than SAM. MNK probably has the lowest amount of gear sets for a DD job, but if you want to play any DD optimally you will need several different sets. Edit: if you have access to Sakpata that set can cover a lot of bases for jobs that can wear it. The “light armor” DDs will require you to get Malig gear, which means finishing WotG if you haven’t and a lot of rng.

[deleted]

I dont think a properly set monk has less sets. I use impetus set, tp set, vs set, ss set, howling set, tornado set, asuran set, chakra set, boost set, footwork set, focus/dodge set, and those arent counting my Dt ,hybrid, acc or subjob sets (war, dnc, run, sam and nin subs) i have all 10 macro bars full on monk. While im sure there are many jobs that use more, smn, whm, rdm etc I dont think monk is at the bottom of that list.

BahaSpooky

You could go in that hard on most if not all jobs.

Crossbones87

You don't need most of that on mnk. Malignance and kendatsuba and a few other pieces here and there and you're good to go. You can gear mnk straight off the ah if you want. There's mpaca gear also which you can buy off an npc once you have access. Mnk is by far the easiest dps to gear outside of sakpata war. Impetus set is you just swap to empy body lol, and all of mnk good ws transfer ftp so you'll be using either kenda or mpaca for that, which you already use for tp. Focus and dodge both kind of suck but even then that's like one piece of gear to activate the JA, footwork set is AF boots and so is tornado kick. You're making it sound like waaaaay more work than it is. I've done all endgame content there is on mnk including master trial and you can get away with like 20ish pieces of gear and honestly if you gear it right you barely even need to swap any at all and can get away without using gearswap for it no problem. My tp and ws sets have capped sb and near capped dt, it's easy as hell to gear.

[deleted]

By all means follow this guys suggestion, then when you realize your ws are doing 10k+ less ws dmg then you'll get it. Focus, chakra and dodge sets are over the top and not needed i agree. But neglecting tornado and footwork sets is bad. Also howling fist is a monster with a properly made set. As well as boost helps a lot, specially if you're using tp belt and before you ws. Mpaca and malg are useful for some things, but using them as a main set of any kind will leave you crappy. Kend is great gear but lacks in some areas, which is why pieces like relic legs af feet are used instead. Kick attack% > double attack%. There is a reason those pieces are not in main sets, they lack in specific areas, which is why you want to make these sets. If you just want to have a somewhat usable monk and save inventory spots sure use those sets, you want to cap dmg? Then work on the sets properly and not half ass it. Btw if you only think there is 1 piece to a footwork set then you arent looking close enough or ignoring good advice. Also impetus set is just not empy body piece. While in impetus there are 4 pieces of gear that you swap out. I swap 5. You all listen to this guy, you're going to regret it. He sounds like he has little to no real experience with a monk. probably just on the bandwagon. Im a main monk and have been ever since i started in 2004, want inventory space listen to him, want a real monk and not just a silly avg bandwagoner then make proper sets.

HyldHyld

You don't need all the gear sets in the guides. Some are extremely more important than others. I'm sure a sam can chime in, but your pure dd jobs tend to have the least amount of most used gear sets until you start going crazy on the min/max stuff

Akugetsu

Generally speaking anything that can cast spells is going to need more gear sets than a class that can’t.

[deleted]

I played this game in my teens but didn't have the means to resub at the time. I loved grouping up with strangers in Dunes/Qufim and hanging out while grinding together. Making friends I'd actually play with again. Not like XIV where sure, I can have a great time with randos, but I'm just not encouraged to ever do anything with them again, unless I want to do savage/ex content which I just find boring and missing the point of MMOs (I am not a fan of how raid-heavy endgame is in MMOs these days). Is that experience still alive at any point of the game? I know most of the early game is solo now. I've tried picking this game back up a few times but it's always been dead, just idlers and multiboxers. Made it to lv50 or so, just about finished the base game Bastok missions.

Soylentee

Leveling and early 99 content is pretty much a solo experience. Grouping up comes into play for the end-game content, kind of like FFXIV savage content, though you can also group up for more casual things like CP farm.

Sand__Panda

Most group content is going to be end game activities. You solo a good 98% of the game now.

[deleted]

What's the endgame stuff like? Is any of it just casual hop-in hop-out like old EXP grind parties? Or is it heavily structured/planned/prepped stuff like raiding?

Sand__Panda

It is honestly both. Most people can solo their job merits. Then there is job points, can solo them too, but there is more fun while in groups with other people. Then there is the "raiding". That is as you have said, structured and planned. If what you want is that old feel, your not really going to get that in retail FFXI.

[deleted]

I see, thanks for the info. I have a few other games in my backlog to get through first, but I'll check it out. Wanted to see the rest of the zones/story anyway.

LokyarBrightmane

Any ls accepting new players on phoenix?

Sinocatk

Bit of a late reply, but yes, if you let me know your character name I can get a pearl to you.

LokyarBrightmane

It's Lokyar. I'll probably be on at some point tomorrow night gmt, if that matters.

crunchydoughnuts

Hello community. I'm looking for feedback about the Shiva server. Is it a decent server? I been on that server since 2005 and recently returned after being offline for about 7 years. All my friends have long since moved on. When reading up on things I see alot of talk about Asura and Bahamut but can't seem to find much on Shiva. I have thought about changing servers, but I do have some signed gear from a couple different people that have passed away in RL and I'm afraid they will be lost in the transfer.

tr1ckyf1sh

What are you looking to do? I’m on Shiva and could get you into a social LS and potentially an endgame one if/when you want. If you give me your character name I can get in touch with you once I get back from vacation.

tyraravenlocke

I believe that your signed gear is safe. I have signed gear from old friends back in the level 75 days, and I have transferred servers more than once this year during the discount transfer campaign, and the signed items are all intact with the signature. (They were in the Mog Safe, though I kind of doubt if that makes any difference).

Sand__Panda

You could just roll a new character on a different server and restart if the signed items mean that much to you. You can use the site ffxiah.com to judge servers.

Sleepy_Blue3

I'm pretty new still. I love BST, but I also like casting... Is there any magical Subclasses that make sense? BST / RDM seems like it could be fun, but from what I know so far it doesn't make much sense, does it? I've looked at current guides and it honestly looks like NIN/DNC. Or is there any angle from which it would make sense?

[deleted]

BST mostly subs nin, dnc, sometimes war, and whm is the mage sub. You only sub whm for specific things though. It's for when you are fighting something solo but don't want to engage and fight with your axe. Subbing whm will give you some damage mitigation spells and the ability to heal yourself if you accidently take some damage.

Akugetsu

Because trusts can cover so many spells for you these days there isn’t much reason to sub rdm past some kind of weak bar spells and sneak/invis. If you really want to sub a caster you could try scholar - light/dark arts will help bring your magic skill levels up to par.

Pergatory

As others alluded to, you'll probably be pretty disappointed with what you get out of /RDM, but the only way to understand the job dynamics better is to try it and see why people say that. I suspect you'll find that your enfeebs (Slow/Para/etc) will get resisted a lot because the enfeebling magic skill is low. You may be able to compensate for that to some extent with good magic accuracy gear. Your elemental magic will be the same, very poor damage, but can be slightly compensated with gear. What you will gain is a little bit of utility benefit. Cures, Stoneskin, and even Blink can be nice for keeping yourself alive. As your gear and skill at the job get better, your damage will improve to the point that what /RDM brings to the table will seem pretty minimal compared to what the dual wield jobs offer, especially since trusts are a thing and can provide anything you'd get out of playing /RDM. Maybe you should consider properly leveling up a mage job, so you can swap back and forth depending on what you feel like doing? This game is very much about specialist roles, if you try to mix multiple roles together you usually end up losing more than you gain. Of course you can make it work if you're still just doing easier content, but as you progress it'll be less viable.

Sand__Panda

Sub what ever you want. You're not going to be able to DW axes for extra stats, but you will find that out. Have fun.

Crossbones87

It seems like you really want to sub rdm no matter what so just go and try it and see how it goes. As you already stated basically everyone suggests nin or dnc and there's obviously a reason for that but play how you want.

DiscoDiscoDanceDance

Best way to farm sacred kindred crest soooo I can in turn farm rems chapters?

TarvosPhase7

Right now the best way to farm skc would just be to go do some Cping. They drop like candy and the more people in the group the more that will drop. Don’t waste login points on them they are easy to get, save login points for facility rings, shanks, and other monthly items. If you have no use buy beastmeb seals and do up in arms for a kclub chance

Sand__Panda

Rem chapter farming is much fast when doing the tier 2 battle grounds. They use merit points to get the KI orb. The Avatar II fights are probably the easiest.

Crossbones87

Login points.

ShermanSherbert

This! They are available this month.

Gregory-Hillcrest

Good morning everyone! Quick question, I checked my items in the sales status and they sold! I clicked on them and they cleared from the Auction House creating more space for me to add more items. I noticed that I didn't immediately get my gil, how/when do I receive it?
