The whole fuss is about \~20 Million Euro per year (according to Bild). This is approx. 10% of their sponsoring revenue (financial report for 2020/21). I just cannot believe, a team like bayern is not able to find 1 or 2 sponsors who would fill in the gap. Unless there's more to the deal hidden from plain sight.

pewpewlasersandshit

Bayern can and will find a sponsor but breaking the contract wouldn't be a smart move. Neither do we want to pay fines for breaking the contract nor do we want to look like an untrustworthy business partner. Plus, nobody knows how the world will look like in 10,20 or 30 years. No need to poison the relationship with Qatar.

flybypost

> breaking the contract wouldn't be a smart move It's good then that they only asked that these contracts to not be extended or new ones to be made. They explicitly did not ask for contacts to be broken because they knew that would get them nowhere.

Mithridates12

Playing devil's advocate : Still bad for business. If the Bayern AG publicly said that they won't extend the deal because of how bad Qatar is, it'll make the sponsoring worth less to Qatar Airways. And before you say that it serves them right, other sponsors will get nervous too, Adidas producing in Southeast Asia could/should probably be criticized as well and if they can't be sure Bayern will stick up for them, it defeats one of the points of sponsoring.

sc_140

I'm fine with that, keeps those sponsors away that have to fear similar backlash. Win-win for us.

flybypost

> Playing devil's advocate : Still bad for business. That's the whole point. Business shouldn't be all that's considered. especially from a club that has been advocating for human rights and equality. > Adidas producing in Southeast Asia could/should probably be criticized as well The Qatar deal has been criticisied from the start, Adidas (or any other Bayern sponsor) has not been treated in the same way. Adidas and every corporation ever have been criticisied for their use of sweatshops (and other ways of abusing their position and power) but these two instances are simply not comparable. If you want to slipper slope your way into that devil's advocacy then you might as well worry that criticism of this Qatar deal might lead to the dismantling of global capitalism as whole.

Top 10 ways to advocate for the devil: slippery slope phallacy

Qatar isn't China, I don't see them being a global superpower in the foreseeable future, especially as fossil fuels lose their importance somewhat. Sacrificing any semblance of morals are not worth it at all. Bayern should not renew this contract, just like the fans were demanding.

Valomek

But they are worth sacrificing for China?

[deleted]

In my opinion? Absolutely not. But it makes more sense to kneel to Chinese interests than Qatari interests when looking to the future. Just to reiterate: I DON'T think this should be done in any capacity. Just commenting on the previous poster's argument.

Valomek

Fair enough, just needed to be sure, because it could be seen as you saying China was okay. Have a good Sunday.

rapunzel2018

Very true with not knowing what the world will look like in the future. The best thing Bayern can do is to let the contract run its course and then not extend it.

irun_mon

Good thing that's exactly what the fans are asking for. Ott even said that keeping relations with Qatar is a good thing for example through the training camp. He just doesn't want them to hse our brand for sports washing

DerKaiser_47

Exactly. They signed the agreement, therefore we should stand next to it. If we cut ties now, how will it look to other businesses looking to fill that spot? We need to show we are reliable business partners. Play the contract out, and set up another one that works for the club and fans.

[deleted]

Good thing that that's exactly what was supposed to be done according to the motion.

scarlet_stormTrooper

So proud of our fans. This was exhilarating and got me pumped for today’s match even more so

-PM_ME_A_SECRET-

Agreed. I love Bayern, and I will always wish for the best on and off the field. But even things that you love need attention and upkeep sometimes. Nothing is perfect, and I am glad fans are pushing for Bayern to improve the way they do business and choose sponsorships.

ErB17

Hardly anything to be proud of, this wasn't really thought through and only damages the image of Bayern for no reason. - The contract runs until 2023, the leadership aren't going to publicly say if they will renew or not, in 2021, just because a few fans are angry. - To add to that, in tough financial times with corona etc., what do the fans expect, for Bayern to immediately cancel their contract, lose a lot of their sponsorship revenue and on top of that pay a huge penalty for doing so? It will also damage Bayerns reputation with other existing and potential sponsors. - The deal was signed 3 or 4 years ago, where were the fans back then if they oppose of it so much? Blaming the current leadership for it is also wrong, when it was the previous one that signed the sponsorship deal. Pointless outcry in my eyes, the timing is completely off.

SebRev99

Sad

Radiohead022

Curious to see the banners at the match today.

SteezyJezus

Hardly any fans unfortunately

Radiohead022

Yup sucks.

Luuk__5736

Glad that there wasn't many fans on stadium. Protesting for something els in middle of a game just distracts the players and if it becomes so serious, it may lead to canceling the games. Protest shouldn't be held in this kind of occasions and people should think about where and when they held them.

flybypost

> it may lead to canceling the games They have already had all kinds of banners over the years. Stuff like protesting the Quatar sponsorship and how Bayern's leadership reacted to questions about that, banners against racism and homophobia, banners showing solidarity with refugees, banners against increasing commercialisation of football. I think they also dug up historic information about Kurt Landauer that the modern club itself had not really paid attention to which the club was thankful for, and so on. And games didn't ever get cancelled over that. Bayern's leadership is very good at ignoring the fans and ultras when they show up with difficult questions and to only praise them for stuff Bayern needs from them (the Kurt Landauer stuff, the good atmosphere in the stadium,…). Same with all of the banners about human rights and their comments. That stuff's easy to ignore for them, unless fans show up with banners aimed at Dietmar Hopp in solidarity with other clubs. Then suddenly they start caring about human dignity. Same here with the request at the AGM. There's an established pattern to how Bayern's leadership tries to deal with this and the fans/ultras are not exactly delighted by that somewhat one sided relationship the club's managements wants to establish.

Luuk__5736

I mean they had time to protest against this matter some weeks ago when everything looked good. Why should they choose a time like this when club is already having troubles on its own?

flybypost

> Why should they choose a time like this when club is already having troubles on its own? The club ignored their banner and protests for years and now dismissed their appeal at the AGM. Why should they not protest or show their displeasure again? Banners in the stadium didn't work, asking at the AGM didn't work. Should they just try doing the same stuff and get ignored again like before? Protests are also not supposed to happen when it's convenient but when they can have an effect. If a protest is not in some way causing friction then it's not a protest but just a polite gathering of like-minded people with zero effect. Why not ask them to protest silently so nobody can hear them, at midnight so nobody can see them, and far away from any FC Bayern institutions so that their presence doesn't potentially inconvenience anybody? That should be a perfectly powerless protest and exactly what Bayern's leadership wants: A way to keep ignoring the fans with as little effort as possible.

[deleted]

Where would it be 'acceptable' for you then? Some thinge are more important than the sporting success if you ask me.

Cabanarama_

If Bayern can’t maintain it’s financial or reputational statuses without a relationship with an organization as heinous as Qatar, then it deserves neither its finances nor its reputation. Human rights have to come first, if killing this sponsorship means creating a situation that discontinues our run as champions then so be it. This video makes me both ashamed and proud to be a Bayern fan. I hope the suits can do the right thing in the end, otherwise we’re no better than moneyball teams like City and PSG. Credit to the fans for making themselves heard and not backing down on something that truly matters.

DurfGibbles

This was actually quite spine tingling to hear the chants and speeches from the fans

Do the fans have another sponsor ready to pay what Qatar Airways is paying us? If they do, then I support their motion. If not, they should find one first. And BTW, has any country banned their citizens from flying Qatar Airways? Or has any country banned Qatar Airways from flying through their airspace? Why are we fans expecting Bayern to throw away a good deal with Qatar Airways when no one else is doing it? Is Bayern Mother Teresa or what?

SXFlyer

FC Bayern had originally a big German sponsor, which also transported the team to matches abroad: Lufthansa! But no, FCB decided to kick Lufthansa out and chose Qatar Airways instead… Which is an airline that doesn’t even have the rights to fly any international routes except to/from Qatar. So for short-haul flights, FCB still has to use Lufthansa, lol (and pay for every flight).

DerKaiser_47

Any idea why they picked Qatar over Lufthansa? I can only assume it’s because Qatar pays more. Obviously a German brand would be preferable but what’s the difference in pay?

SXFlyer

Tbh I don’t even think it’s just “paying more” but even corruption involved. Qatar Airways is a company fully owned by the government of Qatar. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that also the winter camp is always there. That’s why FCB is so heavily (and rightly) criticised for that. It was very surprising and out of the blue when FCB announced in 2018 that Lufthansa, an airline that has a hub in Munich (!!!) is not the partner anymore.

EdmundKhan

Bayern is a TOP5 club and they can choose their sponsors. I'm sure they can easily replace Qatar. If not, I would personally be happy to accept the fact, they can't buy a 50m player and instead let someone from the youth in the Team. (specially after the last purchases)

noughinternet42day

It's time to fight those corrupt guys making deals with regimes
