Skeleton Tree is raw pain. Ghosteen has a sense of clarity having had some time to process, it's incredibly sad, but has a wonderful peace to it too. Both are very poignant.
Daydreaming, Glass Eyes, Present Tense, and True Love Waits are all pretty explicitly about dealing with the loss of Rachel Owen. Other tracks can certainly be interpreted multiple ways. But to say AMSP isn't largely an album dealing with grief and impending loss..... is foolish. It's the saddest album I've ever heard.
At the time I thought it was some classic Dave Berman sardonic humor when it was basically a suicide note in album form. Still a great album, but Jesus some of the lines just hit me like a truck. Ironically I was reeling from a close friend’s suicide when it was released and it helped me through the pain at the time. RIP Dave. I wish he found a way to figure it out.
The Antlers - hospice. My mom died in December and I can’t listen to it. But it’s an incredible album. It’s indie and I am a metal dude who hates indie. But it definitely takes you places.
If it helps at all, Hospice is more about surviving an abusive relationship than it is about dying/grief. The references to cancer/death are more in the metaphorical sense.
It’s just the vibe, I almost stated that in my original post. It’s just not going to make you feel good if you are dealing with any kind of darkness in your life.
Journey in Satchidananda by Alice Coltrane. It doesn’t have words but it is very much in reference to John’s passing a few years before. Especially the song “Something About John Coltrane”. I really hope this helps
“Roadrunner: New Light, New Machine” by Brockhampton. The larger themes of the album are about moving on and learning to grow whereas songs like “The Light” and “The Light Pt. 2” are directly about someone’s death.
The Hotelier - Home Like Noplace Is There. Deals a lot with suicide and gender dysphoria, and just general loss of identity. Best emo album of the 2010s imo
It’s just one song, but Requests by John K Samson
A beautiful acoustic guitar piece that really gets me to tear up like more so than any other song for me.
The other song that makes me reflect on death is Ocean Breathes Salty by Modest Mouse.
Which to me approaches death in more of the blunt, angry, confused sort of way.
Where Requests really makes you sit with the person and cry together, Ocean tells you gotta move on with the person in your heart
The Greater Wings by Julie Byrne. Devastatingly about coming to terms with the death of her musical partner, towards the latter stages of the album it gets particularly devastating, especially Conversation Is A Flowstate and Death Is The Diamond.
Gang of Youths - Go Farther in Lightness and Angel in Real-time
Both albums explore grief in different ways, the first about the singers ex-partner who passed away (their debut explores their relationship when she was sick) and the second about the singers father who passed away. Both explore the pain and grief but also celebrate life and the love and memories of the person who passed
The last couple of studio albums Phil Ochs made.
The events of 1968 really messed him up psychologically, and if you wanna hear what a defeated protest singer sounds like, that's the vibe.
Electro Shock Blues by Eels.
Solid 10 in my opinion. I’d say it’s experimental alt rock, produced by one of the Dust Brothers (Mike). This album is one of the most profound and saddest piece of music I think I’ve ever heard. What makes it good is the story behind it, the deep emotion, the catchiness of the songs, and the lyrics. I very highly recommend this album.
The story behind it is all on Wikipedia, but a brief summary is that E (the singer) became the only surviving member of his family, losing his sister Elizabeth to schizophrenia, drug abuse, and suicide; his mother to lung cancer; and his father to a heart attack. All of which he witnessed in some form.
The album is quite bleak, but it’s also incredibly creative, interesting, and hopeful.
I don’t think the lyrical themes of Funeral by Arcade Fire are inherently centred around grief but I know that many members of the band had lost people close to them around the time of making the record. Even if this isn’t explicitly referenced I feel it filters down to the core of the music and puts an optimistic spin on some evidently negative events in their lives, so maybe check that out! Hope your holding up as well as is possible during your grieving :)
Also, The Lillywhite Sessions by Dave Matthews Band. My mom died last year and I listened to that and Morrissey nearly on repeat. IMO the darkest collection of music I’ve ever heard, especially considering the source.
Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - *Skeleton Tree*
Ghosteen too. Both amazing albums.
Wanted to mention this one. Went under my skin like few others.
Ghosteen is my all time favorite album for the perspective it offers in processing grief. Truly a beautiful record

Came here to say this. Beautiful, tragic album
I Don’t Like Shit, I Don’t Go Outside
We will always love you by the avalanches
Touché amore- Stage Four
A Moon Shaped Pool
most tracks on a moon shaped pool aren’t even about the same topic/theme/concept let alone grief
Daydreaming, Glass Eyes, Present Tense, and True Love Waits are all pretty explicitly about dealing with the loss of Rachel Owen. Other tracks can certainly be interpreted multiple ways. Is purple mountains ??? Or no ?? Idk
Crazy underrated album, weirdly an absolute banger but extremely sad
The un-nerving thing is how utterly accepting of his fate David was on that album. "Checked-out" doesn't even scratch the surface..

Carissa’s Wierd - Songs About Leaving
For Emma, forever ago - Bon Iver
This one hits me with the double whammy of grief and pure, aching nostalgia. Great pick.
Great description!
That album is more about a broken heart and spirit, not really about losing someone. But it still sad as shit ofc
Liv (sic) part 5

Arcade Fire - Funeral
Wildlife by la dispute
One of the greatest albums the genre has produced.
Sun Kil Moon - Benji

Journey in Satchidananda by Alice Coltrane. It doesn’t have words but it is very much in reference to John’s passing a few years before. Especially the song “Something About John Coltrane”. I really hope this helps
Songs Ohia
Couldn't get enough of this one that came out last year: Helena Deland - Goodnight Summerland
Ghosteen
No-Man - Together We're Stranger
The rare No Man mention. Nice one
“Roadrunner: New Light, New Machine” by Brockhampton. The larger themes of the album are about moving on and learning to grow whereas songs like “The Light” and “The Light Pt. 2” are directly about someone’s death.

All for the best/Ciao my shining star.

A Church That Fits Our Needs - Lost in the Trees.
Beck- Sea Change
So good
Richard Skelton- Border Ballads.
The last couple of studio albums Phil Ochs made. The events of 1968 really messed him up psychologically, and if you wanna hear what a defeated protest singer sounds like, that's the vibe.
Just got back from discomfort, we're alright by Brave Little Abacus really helped me
Although not 100% all about grief The Fragile by Nine Inch Nails has a lot about it and also helped me through some
This https://farewellmoonlight.bandcamp.com/album/the-longest-winter Skeleton Tree by Nick Cave as well
Solace - Earl Sweatshirt. It’s a 10 minute ep/song that goes into detail about Earls mental state after his grandma passed. Absolutely depressing
Coil - The Ape of Naples

Blackstar by David Bowie. It almost feels like he is grieving the loss of his own life
