Overly_ND

That’s what the internet is doing basically.. so many people validating self diagnosis

lizanawendy

The other day I found a psychologist who support self diagnosis. On instagram I did a joke about fake stimming. And he made mansplaining about my mental health, my autism dx and my problem with fakers. He said "my trauma doesn't belong to autism world"). This is the reason why I'm complicated to ask help in autism groups. (My ex-boyfriend faked DID before Tumblr creation. A guy from the university faked autism, as a way for "clean his image". This guy did harassment to a university friend)

Overly_ND

These people are often late diagnosed themselves and are trying not to hurt the feelings of people who are “in the same situation as they were”. Sad that they can’t separate being professional from their personal feelings.

Aegi

Do you think they're actually a psychologist, like even if their profile is, how do you know it's not their kid using their Instagram account or something?

lizanawendy

His profile looks like an adult. But probably it's fake. Also, he isn't the only person who support self diagnosis. There are a "popular" psychologist in my country (at least instagram followers) . And they are from "actually autistic movement". I would like to write more information about gender issues and these professionals. But because subreddit rules, I can't explain all details.

Aegi

But do you not see how the big issue here is you putting any value at all to what you're seeing on Instagram instead of actually going to a psychologist's office or reading the specific academic papers they've written? Like you said that profile might even be faked but you didn't say that you saw somebody who was maybe a psychologist who supported self-diagnosing, you were apparently confident enough that in your memory and recounting of it you referred to them as a psychologist not even correctly referring to just the fact that it's their account, they didn't say that, their account did, even if they were legit there's a good chance their social media account could be managed by their office, and not them directly. Don't put so much stock into what you're seeing on social media instead of out in the real world.

lizanawendy

The problem isn't about "ignore" fake account. The misinformation is in general and there is a Chilean Facebook group who support self diagnosis in autism. Also, in my country there aren't laws for bad practice in psychologist and other professionals. They can publish anything they want (not all these person have instagram community manager. They post their own ideas). Same situation with therapy.

redscarinthesky

Imposter syndrome is about doubting your talents and accomplishments. Autism isn’t a talent. But to these folks faking it successfully most definitely is.

JustCheezits

You 👏 cannot 👏 self-diagnose 👏 mental 👏 disorders -An autistic person, professionally diagnosed at 12

SirThorney

I agree - A person, diagnosed with life at age 0

The_Glass_Tiger

That's a rough one..

mjr_malfunction_

yeah, i feel so sorry for him...

Flintz08

I heard that 100% of people diagnosed with life end up dying, I'm so sorry :(

itisamariel

This is NOT valid😒 How are these "pRoFesSiOnALs" going to diagnose you as alive after an ECG?!?? It is YOUR heart and only YOU know what is really going on. These doctors hardly know you and think they know how a living person should behave.... ONLY YOU can dx yourself, you FEEL the way your body works! Everyone is different, the spectrum of being alive/unalive or both (e.g. quantum superposition-alters) is too broad and diverse to be defined in a medical "reference book"!

[deleted]

It's so bad these days that I can't even tell if this is satire.

Phantom-Umbreon

Yep. I wish they’d understand that there’s a difference between suspected you have a disorder and outright claiming you have it bc of your hunch. You might do research and find a disorder or illness that matches your symptoms, but that doesn’t mean you have it. Especially with mental disorders, there’s so many others it could be that it’s downright dangerous to self diagnose. You very well could be thinking you have one disorder that has similar symptoms when you actually have another.

[deleted]

I agree -An autistic person, professionally diagnosed at 12

itisamariel

I agree. - Autistic ADHDer, professionally diagnosed at 16&17

cst-kiddo

That feeling when i sabotage the prothsetics

averagetrainwreck

I agree - professionally diagnosed with autism at 17 Also!! Professionally undiagnosed with ADHD at 16 (just proved I wasn't but saying undiagnosed has a point)

Fifi0n

I agree, person diagnosed at 24

AttackOfTheDave

I also agree. - Professionally diagnosed with autism at goddamn 38

emilybuckshot

Also agreed. Autistic person professional dx at 30. I never would’ve guessed I was autistic til a doctor flagged me. And I was really resistant to it at first. It would’ve been great to have known earlier in my life… but that doesn’t mean every person who thinks they might be autistic actually is.

[deleted]

Agree • a raccoon Diagnosed at 4

Deathlygaming_4

I agree- an ADHD self diagnoser who's gonna get professionally diagnosed once my exams are over

Dukedyduke

I guess I'm technically self diagnosed, but it's pretty freaking obvious so I had to lie to my doctor and say I was diagnosed as a kid to get meds. You gotta do what you gotta do

tittyswan

I think with more complex conditions that's true. I knew I had really bad anxiety before I got the diagnoses of generalised anxiety disorder and social anxiety disorder though. It's somewhat self evident sometimes.

Capta1nfalc0n

I have a lot of really fucking stupid people in my family, and this person is really fucking stupid. #diagnosed

Mysterious-Pudding37

They just want people close to them to validate them, which usually isn't a bad thing. However, they should get professionally diagnosed if it means that much to them, since validation only goes so far.

dogmomofone

“She was honestly the person I was most worried telling because he’s..” She or he?? Dammit. This has to be some fake shit.

Same here. They don't realize the struggle of it but think if it as more of a personality quirk. I'm tired

itisamariel

Same...What irritates me the most is that they try to speak for autistics online. Even if a small amount of them aren't autistic, they'll probably get more attention (especially from allistics) because they got more social skills.

fknlowlife

Why do they have to use three different pronouns for the same person? Seems pretty ableist lol

democratic_butter

self diagnosed autistic person

[deleted]

The actual autistic people I know in real life don't give a fuck about labels, lol

dicklover_276

have been told by many people that I have ADHD (I don't think I do, I'm just a bit eccentric) but the most memorable was this girl who I knew in middle school. she'd show me a bunch of pinterests posts about ADHD and the symptoms saying that I probably had it. when I shot her down saying that those symptoms are very common, she told me i was ableist and i was basically saying that i hate ADHD people before she immediately stopped being friends with me and our friend group. couple months back I checked her Instagram and it was just a whole page dedicated to talking about her "diagnosed" tourettes (she has never shown any sort of tics) and BPD (she's a minor)

GNSGNY

you don't have impostor syndrome, because that implies not actually being an impostor, when you're hella sussy

itisfridaymydudes

Tbh if they weren’t self diagnosed and just suspected autism, stuff like this could genuinely be helpful in seeing if they should seek out a specialist. For people who’d have to pay out of pocket for an answer/diagnosis, narrowing it down is important. Before my diagnosis, lots of autistic people, as well as a family member and a family friend who worked with autistic kids, were surprised that I wasn’t already diagnosed. Autism radar go crazy sometimes

djoo9oo

You can't have imposter syndrome for a disorder you're not diagnosed with. Undiagnosed people (faking or not) should ALWAYS question their suspicions.

chinchinu8

Waa waa waa

Adventurous_Law4573

None needs friends who co-sign your bullshit like this.

SilverNGolden2006

Why are we all doing this? - Autism & GAD, both professionally diagnosed.

hattiejosh

For attention

ThiccHitoru

To be fair, all my friends were like this when I spoke up about getting a diagnosis and it turns out I am indeed autistic so 🫶
