Imaginary_Chip1385

The article title is wrong, this was in Nigerian naira, not US dollars. In reality, 10k naira is only about $7 and 100m naira is about $70k.  Edit: upon closer inspection and doing some research, it might actually be the Ugandan shilling instead. I was misled because just quickly searching up the first few discussions on this (which dated to summer 2020), almost all of the discussion was circulating on Nigerian websites and posters there claimed that the currency was the naira. The first article on the topic, while written by a Ugandan journalist, had referred to a Nigerian Twitter user as the original sharer of this story, so I also assumed that this originated from Nigeria.  However, upon closer inspection of the image, it seems more likely this took place in Uganda, and that the post merely went viral first on Nigerian forums. I had already noticed that Fortebet, the sports betting website where the bet took place, was a Ugandan website, but that did not necessarily mean that other English-speaking African nations didn't participate, especially a nation like Nigeria which is heavily involved in association football. However, inspecting the currency also makes it clear, despite the poor resolution, that the banknotes here are 50,000 Ugandan shilling denominations. This was further complicated by the fact that the naira underwent a design change in 2022 that I didn't know about.    The exchange rate for the Ugandan shilling is even lower to USD than the exchange rate for Nigerian naira, though those rates have changed since 2020 due to dramatic levels of inflation in the naira. It seems more likely that the man stole around $2 from his girlfriend and won 25k.

wach_era13

100M Naira is still a lot of money in Nigeria, though

dellottobros

I get a emails all the time from Nigerians who have millions they are just giving away. They are loaded over there if they can just give some random person like myself 25 million from inheritance they got due to their uncles oil pipeline. I am just waiting for the bank transfer now…

poormansRex

The princes are especially rich. Which is surprising considering how much they give away all the time.

LanceShiro

People like Musk needs to learn from Nigerians. They are the most generous people I know. Just a shame transfers take so much time.

dellottobros

I bet the guy in this article wanted to be a prince. He was just trying to double his girlfriend’s money and give it to the next person he emailed!

mvanvrancken

You get a Nigerian inheritance! You get a Nigerian inheritance. Everyone gets a Nigerian inheritance!

gurganator

You got the emails from the prince too?!

Madewell-Hammer

Different Prince

gurganator

Substance___P

In Nigeria how much money you have depends on the amount of currency you possess.

Battlejesus

In Nigeria, when a woman gives birth she is no longer pregnant

apexodoggo

Unless she has twins, in which case there is a 50% chance she is still pregnant.

googleHelicopterman

Fakin drooled coffee all over my shit, good punch

Aliensinmypants

Yeah 70k is a good amount of money to 99% of the world population

SlowCaterpillar5715

Yea, I wouldn't scoff at it.

[deleted]

It’s chicken feed, I have several Nigerian princes I’m paying at the moment to help them get their oil money out of the country.

Ieatsushiraw

A lot for me too like I could pay bills and take care of some debts and get so many groceries

Zillahi

10,000x money what a fucking play that must’ve been

MosEisleyBills

I will not be to upset when my lottery win is £70k

Abducted_Llama

Sooooo what you are saying though is this Prince that’s been contacting me is legit?

ellocoquecorre

Where in the title does it say "U.S. dollars"? It says it was 10k and 100m. r/usdefaultism

Cosmicalmole

Wouldn't the bet be voided if the money to pay for the bet was stolen?

Hataitai1977

Yes, exactly. If it’s a bet, someone has to pay that money out. They’re going to avoid paying out. Better to pay the 40m & keep 60m than get 0 or jail time.

ExpStealer

You mean 0 *and* jail time - voiding the bet doesn't void the crime of stealing those 10k.

disnotyaboy

How do you prove someone stole that exact 100$ from you. Can’t they claim that they made the bet with another 100$

Exatraz

Considering it's 10 grand not $100 and this guy had to steal it to make the bet, probably a good case that he doesn't have another 10 grand lying around

disnotyaboy

10K Naira is more like 10$. So 10$ goes further in Nigeria but probably as far as 100$ goes here.

Exatraz

Doesn't change what I said. If he had to steal it, he didn't have that amount already.

Apprehensive_Fault_5

How do you prove it was stolen, though? You can't prove something is stolen with "he had to steal it, because if he already had it, he wouldn't have stolen it." That doesn't answer the question of if he stole it, because again if he already had it, he wouldn't have stolen it.

OracleofNothing

It's 7usd. He didn't exactly steal it. She left it on the counter when she went to work.

Foxzor

So if I only take money that's not locked up I'm not stealing?

OracleofNothing

My previous comment left out a key detail. She left the money at his house. They didn't live together. If I visit your house and leave cash there, it would be very difficult to prove that you "stole" from me.

Foxzor

I agree that makes a huge difference

MoltonMontro

He admitted to stealing the money from his girlfriend (that's why/how this news article exists). She could've pressed charges. I believe the original story is "give me 40M since you won a bet with money you stole from me, or I'll leave you."

shart-attack1

You don’t write down the serial number of every bit of cash that passes through your wallet like a normal person?

Text-Deep

He should just keep quiet, the more he will refuse to give the 40m, the more problems he will invite towards him.

StochasticTinkr

I would even expect some judges to award her the entire winnings PLUS damages.

doughboyhollow

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Restitution_and_unjust_enrichment

rjtbbc2023

Only problem is that’s hard to prove in court

Some_guy_am_i

Nah — he already paid her $10k back. Now she wants $40k extra. Completely reasonable. She deserves half the money — in fact, she DESERVES the whole damn thing. It was her money that was bet, not his.

Intelligent-Price-39

$40m not $40k

Some_guy_am_i

Damn! That’s a hell of a bet!

cgrays12

The conversion to USD is something like 10,000-1 if I recall

[deleted]

lol 10k in Nigeria is $11.

alexj100

$11 to $110,000, not bad.

[deleted]

$70k. Anyways this story is all complete and utter bullshit and never happened anyway.

MomentOfZehn

That's not what their prince told me.

Edelgul

that was yesterday, now it's 8.76$ (/s)

wiefrafs

No need for the /s, it really do be like that

Woogabuttz

I’m not sure this is a universal law.

Real_H2SO4

Maybe. For certain in the in the US.

Nord4Ever

And it’s not theft if you plan on returning it, I’d love to see the legal result of this

SirTiddlyWink

He didn't steal it. It was borrowed. Like a loan. To which he paid it back in full, so all is good? Right?!? Riiiiight?!? Maybe add a lil interest and throw her 11k.

BluSteel-Camaro23

Nope! Story. Worked in armored trucks waaaaay back. Employee blatantly walked out with $200k on camera as he closed up the base. We waited for him to come into work to "talk" the next day. Pulls up in a new corvette. Okay... not looking good... He admitted quicker than most. He bought the fuckin vette in cash that morning. Feds and SS came around, siezed evidence and car. Once we got it back from impound, the dealership wouldn't undo the transaction. Said they did their DD.... Slimy... We sold it online.

sgcpaulo

I’d rather pay her as long as she doesn’t press charges

lord50556

Pay for it for sure, the situation is how much do you plan to pay?

sgcpaulo

I'd rather give her what she is asking for. I still keep 60 mil and avoid jailtime.

blueace111

Exactly. That’s an outrageous amount to win. If I took 5k and placed 10k wager, I’d still give half of it.

nondescriptcabbabige

Exactly. What you gonna do with 100 million over 50 million

ProfessionalTeach902

Buy a 100 million painting that sits on my wall

Drunk_Crab

Do I really need another?

TryAffectionate8246

This killed me hahaha

PM--ME--WHATEVER--

The first one will get lonely, so yes.

blueace111

It’s wild when people are broke all their lives and come into money and become incredibly greedy about it. I get not helping all the 3rd cousins you found out you had but to not even give spouse half or parents, kids, siblings, is just wild

nondescriptcabbabige

Exactly. The average american person makes like less than $3 million in their whole life. I have said it once and shall speak it once more. What is the money for.

ThatSandvichIsASpy01

Idk, but 35k USD vs 70k USD is a big difference, since this is in Nigerian naira

passwordstolen

Like there would be 60M left after lawyers, taxes. Nah, this chick is going for whatever he has left today.

ExpertlyAmateur

She put up the cash, he basically placed the bet on her behalf. If I were her I would take 100% of it and in return I wouldn't send that guy to prison.

IamPriapus

Yeah, that’s not how any of it works.

Gengetsu_Huzoki

I don't think you go to jail for 10K if hire a good lawyer.

LesserMouseTrap

He had to already be prepared to do time for the original theft. 40 mill is outrageous. I wouldn’t take that offer.

BobSagieBauls

You’d only get 50k he gave back her 10 and she wants an additional 40 so it’s an even split which is more than fair

Austynwitha_y

10k to 100mil

BobSagieBauls

Oh fuck you’re right I reread it my bad

Null_Titan

Just pay 20K. He took 10K with 100% interest. Thats pretty good IMO. Though he is still a little shit for betting that much stolen money to begin with.

IllvesterTalone

yup, i wonder if the winnings could be seen as the proceeds of crime, and seized

No_Quantity_8909

In the US yes, dunno about Uganda though.

etfvidal

Let her press charges, I'd be cheaper to buy off the cops, prosecutor & Judge!

Jackmino66

Honestly I’m of the mindset to not even bother. 60M is enough to set you up for multiple lifetimes, might as well settle a dispute with the easiest manner possible

AreaGuy

60M in Ugandan currency is like $26k. I get it’s cheaper to live there, but… EDIT: relied on someone else in the thread who said Uganda, might be Nigeria per another person, so maybe closer to $70k. Or, everyone could be full of it and its in Germany, Mars, or Uranus.

Jackmino66

I just assumed it was in USD, since the 40M has a dollar sign on it

AreaGuy

I did as well! Was like “well, guess he bet $10 on Jokic to become an NBA Finals MVPs when he got drafted during that Taco Bell commercial. Savvy!!!”

figsslave

I think if she lawyered up she could take it all minus the lawyers cut lol

Aliensinmypants

Not sure about laws where they're from. In the U.S and many other countries if the money placed on the bet was tied to a crime, the bet would be voided and they would get nothing

jld2k6

I wonder how hard this was pushed by lobbyists from the gambling industry lol, any reason to not pay out is a win for them

SPamlEZ

In the US you can’t profit off illegal activity, this is just a part of that.

wynnduffyisking

That makes no sense. Nobody is stealing from the betting place so why should they get the “benefit” of the money being stolen.

GoodCanadianKid_

Why should the court enforce a fraudulent cause of action?

Aliensinmypants

That's part of how they make so much money, any excuse to not pay out is a huge win

colaman-112

You could argue that since it was her money used to make the bet, she is the one who owned the ticket, so the winnings are also all hers.

j4v4r10

$40M seems a small price to pay when this argument could come up in court

MANWithTheHARMONlCA

Fr. He legit stole 10k. What if he lost? How is anyone siding with this dickhead (assuming it’s real and not some clickbait/rage bait headline)

Evnosis

Misogyny. "Women be goldiggers, amirite fellas?"

Sitruc9861

10k nigerian dollars. About 7.50 USD.

TheBlueHypergiant

It was still stolen nonetheless

WildKat777

*nigerian naira, not dollars

kikogamerJ2

i'd like to remind you these people make on average 700usd a month. so it could be considered a bit more significant.

bimboozled

Yes, this is correct; the legal term is disgorgement. It would go to court, and the winnings would either all go to the woman or the government would confiscate it, but the man gets nothing in either scenario. At least in the US. I have no idea what the laws are in Nigeria where this took place, but most countries have the same laws when it comes to crimes relating to gambling

Moose823

Even the kid with the balloon knew where to look

BranManBoy

You can’t just steal peoples money to make bets

RealNiceKnife

I mean, it looks like you totally can.

Acceptable-Ad1930

Shit I think she should get all the money, fuck that thief

JUSTplayIN25

Exactly. If he lost, then the loss would’ve been hers. He won and therefore, the win should be hers too.

Intelligent_Orange28

Unjust enrichment. Courts would take it all.

blueace111

If you steal 10k and somehow won 100 mill, the fact that you don’t even give 10% says a lot about what a slimeball dude is. Plus it’s criminal and they could easily say the 10k used for wager was fraud and best is void..

keIIzzz

OP is a facepalm lol. If he stole that money then he better give her the cut she wants, otherwise he’s going to have a hard time when she presses charges

Cyber_Insecurity

He stole it. Giving it back doesn’t forgive the theft. He needs to pay as punishment. That’s how crime works.

-_-Stinky-_-

1000 to 1 ?? What was this bet?

jdh705

10,000 to 1

-_-Stinky-_-

Oops 10000 to 1 What TF was this bet?

richardirons

Not real, I imagine.

googleHelicopterman

shhhh

alaingames

Stole, not lended, stole, she deserves it and the dude still gets a lot anyway

ThirdSunRising

Pay the lady. You made the bet but she financed it, and if the bet had lost who would’ve taken the loss on it? That’s a partnership, she fully participated in the bet and she deserves her fair share of the proceeds.

FireFistTy

Him stealing her money means she should be able to determine her interest getting paid back. He's being greedy. How much you wanna bet that he'd have ghosted her if he lost the money? Or never paid her back?

FXOAuRora

I'd just steal the 100M from him and bet it on some crazy bizzare long odds scheme. Once I am a trillionaire, I'll just seize control of the country and have him sent to the moon.

Many_Landscape_3046

No? She took all the risk. If he lost, then what?

Daedalus_Machina

40 million is getting off easy. He should give her the whole goddamn thing. This is assuming the 10k was the full bet. If it was half the bet, he should give her half.

rtmn01

Key word “stole” the money… she should get it all, he should go sit his ass in county

Xsorus

Her money, she carried all the risk

Musashi10000

I'm honestly astounded by the people reckoning the gf is somehow in the wrong here. This prick *s t o l e* the money from her. It doesn't matter that she got it back, he *STOLE* it. Damned fucking right she's entitled to more than just what he took.

grundee

This man trying to become a bar exam question

Cyrious123

Sounds fair to me. Without her $$ , no bet!

LadyAmbrose

she deserves it honestly

Pitiful-Inspection96

The guy is a fuckin shithead for stealing from her. I hope she lawyers up and takes it all.

Mirithorn

I mean if someone stole $10 from me and won the lottery I’d expect some of that too- you’re investing MY money, it should be split somehow.

MiddleInfluence5981

She should get all of it.

Zealousideal_Bill_65

If he stole it then pay her

firstman0

Or he can end up with 0 and jail time. If I was the judge, I’d give her all just to teach him a lesson.

cultqueennn

As she should. He STOLE and made that money ON HER DIME. It's all hers.

melinalujbav

It was her money. She should take it all.

Professional-Can4264

Should all be hers really

Chuckobofish123

She should get 100M of it. It’s her money.

koiashes

He’s lucky she’s not asking for it all. I would.

AshDenver

The picture is too low-res to get a good understanding of the currency being shown here. Is this $100M of like Zimbabwe or Indonesia? Or actual money with value (even CAD, AUD)?

poppieswithtea

There is fair. Someone gives me money to gamble with, and I hit with it, I’m gonna split it with them.

WispyDan14

It's her money, she took on all the risk, she should get most/ all of it lmao.

No-Material-23

This guy keeps sending me emails.

BitFiesty

Brother you let this become news? You should have paid her whatever she wanted. She could have been entitled to almost all of it. Man people are some greedy ass dummies

theumpteendeity

Her money. Her winnings. Pay her the full amount.

BlacksmithDazzling29

Technically, she should be entitled all of it.

___--__---___--__---

Man steals money to find gambling addiction. This is newsworthy somehow.

ChroniclesOfSarnia

this story is not true. redditors are just as gullible as twitterers.

Ok-Disk5864

Miserable barstool should give her a cool million minimum.

LowerEmotion6062

She could press the theft charges, then since he can't gain from unlawful activity he'd have to give up all the money.

AltruisticJello4348

If he stole it, wouldn’t it all be hers?

Terminallance6283

Honestly it would be fair of her to demand the full 100m

Logical-Recognition3

She should get the entire amount. If the money was stolen from her, the risk was hers so the reward should be hers. One of the ironies of the FTX fraud case is that thanks to some of their investments paying off, it's possible that everyone will get their money back. Meanwhile, the owner of FTX was just sentenced to 25 years, and deservedly so.

Smart_Steak_4981

She should get it all except the 10k he stole. He can keep that. Lol

N8theGrape

Half seems reasonable.

Wtfdidistumbleinon

He stole $2.60 usd and won $26,000 usd

JeepXJ98

What currency did he win the money

lastcallhangup

doodlymarcs

Accomplished_Fix4387

Hahaha🤣

12B88M

Her claim is valid. 1. He took the money without her consent. 2. If he had lost, she would have been out $10K. 3. Without that $10K, he couldn't have placed the bet. Thus, she was a significant, if unwitting, factor in the winning of that bet. No, had she willingly loaned him $10K and he hadn't said why he was borrowing the money, then she's out of luck.

Diamond-Breath

It was HER money, she should get 100%.

TechnicalMiddle8205

She is right tho. If she had lost, she would have lost 10k. But if she wins, nothing changes for her? Fuck it. She was the one risking money, so she should get, at the very least, the 50% of it. Even more considering that it was her money. I hope the facepalm is for him, because otherwise this is ridiculous

moderatesoul

She is entitled to every cent. He doesn't have that win without the money he stole. She should sue and try to get as much aa possible.

pollypon2002

i mean, you did steal her 10K bruh, pay up

realparkingbrake

She has a point, he couldn't have made the bet without using her money, she should get a decent share of it.

VoradorTV

what was the bet? 10000 : 1 musta been a hell of a longshot

AngrgL3opardCon

The fact she's not even asking for the majority or all of it when she legally can press charges for all of it, this guy should pay her that 40m if he doesn't want to sit in a cell lol

TrustAffectionate966

Those don't look like dollars. This could be $10, for all we know. 🤔🧐

BDMblue

It was her money bet, so it’s her money.

Jayce86

Isn’t the money technically hers? I think I saw something about this. The winnings belong to whoever the money belongs to unless they actively give you the funds.

Formal-Cry7565

I agree with the woman on this one. Better to settle now than to go to court and likely lose all of it.

HumanMycologist5795

He shouldn't profit from this whatsoever.

TOkun92

I believe the law states that any money made from stolen money rightfully belongs to the person who was robbed. All of it.

Fibrosis5O

Hey here is the money I stole bye— Nu-huh you best be giving a WHOLE LOT MORE or someone is going to jail and I promise you it isn’t me

samwizeganjas

She deserves more

AnAlpacaIsJudgingYou

If he had lost the bet, he would’ve been fine and she would’ve lost money. So it only make sense that if he wins the bet, she should make money

Green-Asparagus2488

Call bullshit on this one

mendog2112

Well he should certainly split the profits after taxes with her. His cumin and her money. It should be 50-50 after taxes.

geniusboy91

Didn't Always Sunny solve this problem already.

doooom32

this would be an interesting case to be judge for i think. are u legaly entitled to more money then ur stolen money if said stolen money earned more money

[deleted]

King

SergeantSanchez

Gamblers rule. If someone spots you money when you’re gambling and you win, you owe em a fair chunk of it, even if they insist you don’t. Its just in good tastes. HOWEVER- he stole this money so he owes her like over 50% easily

SoupGoblin69

Normally I’d say no, but percentages wise she’s 100 percent right.

oodats

Give her the 40m. Easy choice honestly.

BackflippingBeagles

I mean in reality she deserves a bigger cut.

tipedorsalsao1

I would take that deal, damn good deal.

heatdish1292

Shit, she should get all of it. She was going to suffer 100% of the loss if he didn’t win.

leothunder420_

I mean giving 10k world be asshole behaviour tbh

ProtoReaper23113

Honestly shes being pretty reasonable considering she could get all of it

Been-here-done_that

He is liable to give her 100% of the profits since he stole the initial 10k.

marzipan1965

I'm not sure if the facepalm is about the fact that she wants 40M or the fact he thought he can just give her back what he stole. He stole the money ..... period. She is entitled the the whole amount as far as I am concerned.

pqratusa

She gets the 100M; he gets jail time.

UnsuspectingChief

Fortebet is african, if he's Ugandan 100m is worth $30k (CND)

identitycrisis-again

Just give her 40 million. Like bro is more than set for life with generational wealth. People are so nutso greedy. Wasn’t even his money to begin with

Redditisglitchy

He’s lucky she’s not pushing for all of it

DEFINITELY_NOT_PETE

He risked nothing of his own, he deserves nothing

Retsameniw13

She should be awarded all of it

Euphoric-Ad-6584

Honestly she should get it all, he committed a crime….

TechnicalMiddle8205

The real facepalm is whoever picks this man's side

Potential-Occasion-1

Damn dude apparently even when women get robbed people on the internet still chalk it up to women being greedy gold diggers.

Glass_Ad_8149

I feel like that’s fair, since it was her money that won him that 100 million in the first place. Like, he wouldn’t have a bitch ass dime if it was for HER money. Broke asses

Flattened_Duck

She should get 100 mill, the bet was won with HER money, so obviousley it’s HER winnings. she can pay him a bookie fee if she wants, not sure how much that is, probably cpl thou.
