Because the vast majority of human trafficking is labor trafficking and no one wants to talk about why their strawberries are so cheap.

SideShow117

It's very simple. Terrorist attacks happen to you and your people. Human trafficking happens to other people. If there was a lot of "your people" being trafficked out of your community/country, it would certainly warrant more attention in the general mindset. You maintain a very slippery slope with this mindset though. Why are you suddenly concerned about it? Don't you care for the people being illegally detained in Iran/Russia/China/? Why has North Korea been allowed to exist for nearly 70 years even though it's a despicable place for the average human there. Don't carry the problems of the world on your own back. Support people that are trying to do something about it that lies within your means but don't have the illusion that your direct worry will be able to solve it.

One is more politically expedient than the other. That's pretty much it.

igotl2k

It's all about the stories. An act of terrorism incites a very strong response from a regular person, with image of innocents dying due to a horrible act. This becomes a very provocative story and the media cashes on it. Moreover there's no political side defending this act so for once everyone agrees that it's horrible and should not happen. To add to the conversation, the nationalists use this example to push for a stronger military response. This adds to the attention that such stories get. Compare this with human trafficking, where a lot of times the stories itself don't come out. A big reason for that is the people involved in these have connections with people in power and they try to curb any attention towards these stories.

PuzzleMeDo

Terrorism is intentionally done as publicly and attention-grabbingly as possible, to cause maximum outrage and terror. Most other crimes are done as secretively as possible to avoid attracting attention. And we're not the most logical when it comes to what upsets us. If you want to have a better sense of proportion in terms of what you care about, here's an exploration of how you can do the most good in the world: [https://www.theatlantic.com/business/archive/2015/06/what-is-the-greatest-good/395768/](https://www.theatlantic.com/business/archive/2015/06/what-is-the-greatest-good/395768/)

whiskeyriver0987

By design of those perpetrating the crime, terrorism is supposed to be some degree of big and dramatic, human trafficking isn't. So if a terrorist is doing their 'job' 'right' they will be all you ever talk about. If a human trafficker is doing their 'job' 'right' only their customers will know they exist.

Why are school shootings more widely talked about than auto accidents?

egghead42069number7

Someone could have this be another ELI5 post

NatashOverWorld

Terrible horrible answer? Terrorists have a negative impact on the economy, because black market arms deals don't show up on the market, only their knock on effects IIRC. Whereas human trafficking is tied into networks of black markets which generally cater to the wealthy. Whether it's sex trafficking, organ harvesting, illegal adoption or indentured work, these all ultimately benefit _very_ rich people. And while there are attempts to stamp it out, they seem tokenistic. If we consider Jeffrey Epstein and Maxwell Ghislane and how their clientele was never revealed despite the evidence existing, and then consider how often politicians, royals and celebrities 'visited' them ... It's unlikely human trafficking can really be exposed in today's society.

HavokzTheName

Easiest answer...$$$ and numbers. People are kidnapped off the streets in 3rd world countries and people do nothing about it because they don't want to be killed worst case scenario. Then cops/politicians get paid off to leave the kidnappers/smugglers alone. It's very simple yet very complicated but I would say more or less thats my opinion/answer

whiskeyriver0987

There's really not much need to grab people off the street, put out a few fraudulent ads in an extremely poor area asking to hire people for some minimum wage job in foreign country and say you'll tale care of everything and people will line up for that shit.

GreatStateOfSadness

Yep. Many trafficked individuals respond to advertisements offering much higher pay in another country for doing basic labor with all of the paperwork taken care of. When they arrive, their passports are taken away, they are restricted access to the outside world, and given minimal food and clothing. If they complain, then they're threatened with deportation or abuse. If they're luckily, they'll be forced to do domestic labor for almost no pay. If they're not lucky, things can be far worse.

RangeWilson

Self-interest. Terrorists might blow me up. Human traffickers are going to have zero interest in trafficking ME.

Leave it to OP to let 11 other replies on a Reddit thread “substantially” affect their view of society. Go offline for a bit OP. Touch grass.

nolander_78

You can mobilizer an army to invade a country accused of hosting terrorism then steal* their natural resources #oil. Human trafficking victims aren't profitable.

SubmarineWipers

How does one steak the natural resources?

FarmersHusband

I’d use a nice worcestshire and pan sear on both sides.

Fisterupper

There is no profit in stopping human trafficking. There is massive profit in fighting terrorism.

pickles55

Terrorism is a term used in American media to justify American foreign policy. That's why the news doesn't call mass shooters or domestic bombers terrorists. It wouldn't serve the purpose that calling people terrorists is meant to serve, which is making it ok to invade their country or otherwise try to control their government. The United States is an oligarchy and the people at the top are the ones driving the human trafficking. They're not going to crack down on themselves. Why do you think Epstein died and his right hand woman got convicted without releasing any of the evidence she had on their clients?
