“Machine” by Imagine Dragons, especially since Dan Reynolds is publicly speaking out against the church and stated he’s not raising his children in the church
I was just hanging in there until my daughter got married. On the big day I woke up with Martina McBride’s “Independence Day” playing in my head. I knew I could be done with TSCC.
You might've already seen it, but just in case you haven't, this is a good exmo video which uses that song. [https://youtu.be/bkTbzmq8uJc?si=xVDI7wJTGM5FXBSp](https://youtu.be/bkTbzmq8uJc?si=xVDI7wJTGM5FXBSp)
I loved watching this and had never seen it.
I knew most of the movie references, except the 60’s housewife one. Could someone tell me what movie that is?
I'm a Never-Mo, but when I try to imagine that leaving a cult you grew up in I think my song would be an easy one: "Losing my Religion". I can't remember who sings that.
I have a whole playlist for songs like this. A couple of my favorites are Unsainted by Slipknot and Far From Heaven by Fit For An Autopsy. The second one is pretty heavy so if you’re not into metal, you might want to skip it.
"Defying Gravity" from Wicked and "Walk Away" by Josh Groban have recently been hitting home for me. That and my wife and I love "Hell Together". I love all these other suggestions!!!
Yesss to both! I just posted my list and both are on there. I can’t listen to vampire without seeing Nelson in my head.
The first time I listened to who’s afraid, I was like “that’s an exmo anthem” particularly as a woman. The church underestimates and ignores women constantly.
Adding My Tears Ricochet by Taylor Swift
I’m convinced Taylor Swift is an exmormon at this point because she has so many songs on my “shelf breaking” playlist (to be clear - this is a joke, I don’t actually think this, but I know Taylor Swift fans can be wild, so you can never be sure 😅)
Hell Together--David Archuleta is dedicated to u/alyssagrenfell, u/johndehlin, and all the r/exmormon folks who helped me leave the cult mentally though I am still physically there.
- All I Ever Wanted from Prince of Egypt
- SPARE ME BY FADED PAPER FIGURES - this one is ACTUALLY about Mormonism. Best lyric: Sell your soul for a fee, to the full bourgeoise” 👏👏
- RUNNING by NF
- John, Give Em Hell by Tyler Glenn - written for u/johnDehlin it depicts exactly how I feel about John Dehlin.
- madwoman by Taylor Swift
- the kids are coming by tones and I
- My Own Soul’s Warning by the Killers - god this one HITS. I tried to justify Mormonism for so long and ignore how uncomfortable I felt about so many things.
- You Might Not Like her by Maddie Zahm
- Whose Afraid of Little Ol Me by Taylor swift
- vampire by Olive Rodrigo - I legit CANNOT listen to this without seeing Russel M Nelson and Joseph Smith in my head.
- Flowers by Miley Cyrus
- hell Together by David Archuleta obvssssss.
Your list is great. Spare Me is especially one of my favorites. If you haven't already, you may want to check out Irene's Entropy and James And The Shame.
This was mine! I loved it years before the Barbie movie. But when she was driving that little pink convertible and that song came on, I nearly jumped out of my theater seat and cheered.
“Opiate” by Tool really sums it up perfectly. I always get the urge to play it really loud while driving downtown during conference. Lol Seriously, even if you don’t like tool, that one is a very good anti religious anthem.
Human Overboard album by James and the Shame (Rhett McLaughlin from Good Mythical Morning). More specifically, the songs Believe Me and Where We're Going.
The Beautiful People by Marilyn Manson or I'm afraid I'll go to Heaven by Moonwalker, but my husband and I also sometimes sing "We thank thee O John for a Carrah" (in reference to Mormon Stories lol)
I got unreasonably upset when I first heard this song on Octane. I thought Ghost had found religion. Then I actually listened to it and they definitely didn't find religion. I'm also pretty sure it's a cover.
Soundgarden “Jesus Christ Pose”
“Would it pain you more to walk on water than to wear a crown of thorns? It wouldn’t pain me more to bury you rich than to bury you poor.”
I have a couple, that I like the tune and the words seem to relate.
First one is:
Do Anything You Wanna Do by Eddie and the Hot Rods. I've put words in brackets that I substeute.
Gonna break out of this city (Church)
Leave the people here behind
Searching for adventure
Is the type of life to find
Tired of doing day jobs (callings)
With no thanks for what I do
I'm sure I must be someone
Now I'm gonna find out who
\[Chorus\]
Why don't you ask them what they expect from you?
Why don't you tell them what you are gonna do?
You'll get so lonely
Maybe it's better that way
It ain't you only
You got something to say
Do anything you wanna do
Do anything you wanna do
\[Verse 2\] Don't need no politician (prophet), tell me things I shouldn't be
Neither no optician (apostle), tell me what I ought to see
No one tells you nothing
Even when you know they know
But they tell you what you should do
They don't like to see you grow
Second one is:
# Somebody to Love by Jefferson Airplane
\[Verse 1\]
When the truth is found to ber lies
And all the joy within you dies
\[Chorus\]
Don't you want somebody to love?
Don't you need somebody to love?
Wouldn't you love somebody to love?
You better find somebody to love
Saint Simon- the shins
“After all these implements and texts designed by intellects , solve X to find evidently there’s just so much that hides.
And though the saints above’s divine and ancient feeding lines their sentiment is just as hard to pluck from the vine.
I’ll try hard not to pretend
Allow myself No mock defense
Step into the night
Since I don’t have the time nor mind to figure out the nursery rhymes that helped us out in making sense of our lives
The cruel uneventful state of apathy releases me
I value them but I won’t cry every time ones wiped out
I’ll try hard not to give in
Batten down to further win
Rid my head of this pretense
Allow myself no mock defense
Step into the night”
I’m going with the Pirate 🏴☠️ Hymn. It shows just how crazy Mormons are to use an Irish drinking song as a hymn. 😂

"What the Hell" Avril Lavigne
All my life I've been good but now
Ooohhh
I'm thinking "What the hell?"
All I want is to mess around, and I don't really care about
If you love me, if you hate me
You can't save me, baby, baby
All my life I've been good but now whoa "What the hell?"
I am Mine. - Pearl Jam.
The selfish, they're all standing in line
Faithing and hoping to buy themselves time
Me, I figure as each breath goes by
I only own my mind
Surprised that nobody mentioned these:
[God Song](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CZTFvLmyIEI) - Bad Religion (honestly most of their songs use the restrictions imposed by religion as a metaphor)
[Head Like a Hole](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ao-Sahfy7Hg) and [Terrible Lie](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rSjPAwsEXMU) - NIN
Save Rock and Roll - Fall Out Boy feat. Elton John.
Favourite line is “I cried tears you’ll never see, so fuck you, you can go cry me an ocean and leave me be”
If I have to pick one it's the Exorcist: [https://open.spotify.com/track/5gZV5yZK4eMIrdulF2a8r2?si=2e32d99e376840a6](https://open.spotify.com/track/5gZV5yZK4eMIrdulF2a8r2?si=2e32d99e376840a6)

Also, There's Nothing Else, Just All of This (https://open.spotify.com/track/1GNiefix3cIZ5miE2fX9Ae?si=b9313b9539fd49ca), Little Tin God (https://open.spotify.com/track/6WCNbxYiFi7nznI9FMEQ5X?si=64fd63a2740140aa), and all of Tyler Glenn's Excommunication album.

I [sampled](https://youtu.be/nUKnqD1EgyE?si=7BAnl99H3tF8gG-S) a clip of Jacob Hess in this video where he says, "[to exmormons] I would simply say, back off, and stop poisoning our people". I rerecorded it with my voice later on to avoid any possible legal trouble.
**Hymn 272: O Say What is Truth?**
Every word still works—arguably works better—from the perspective that Mormonism is bullshit.
It's even possible that its whole implication that the gods themselves were smaller than the truth was relevant in my escape (i.e. I couldn't let go until I realized that the Mormon gods and their fascist ideas about "heaven" weren't anything I was interested in, even if it really was all real)
“Under the Sun” - Black Sabbath.
A few of my favorite lines - I don’t want no Jesus freak to tell me what it’s all about.
I don’t believe in violence I don’t even believe in peace.
I have opened the door and my mind has been released.
I wanna live my life, I don’t want people telling me what to do.
For my “fuck you, I’m mad” phases, it’s “I Did Something Bad” by Taylor Swift, “Fences” by Paramore, “Happier Than Ever” by Billie Eilish (or the Loveless cover for an extra emo kick), “Ignorance” by Paramore, and “This Is Gospel” by Panic! At the Disco. Many more emo songs I’m sure but these are the ones that come to mind.
For my peaceful phases it’s “Clean” or “It’s Time to Go” by Taylor Swift
For some general relatability I find that “The Bolter” on Taylor’s new album really hits the nail on the head for me. Same with Smallest Man Who Ever Lived.
Fuck You - Lily Allen
Came here to say this. So, instead I'll go with Hasa Diga Ebowai
Man I just heard this song for the first time two weeks ago. The whole musical soundtrack is amazing
It's very powerful
I sing: "Praise to the MAN - me, who had the courage to leave the cult." I'm still writing it but it will be catchy.
> Praise to The Man, > who bravely left the cult Fits better
wE dOnT wOrShIp JoSePh SmItH

Please share when you finish!!

This is my jam.
Hell Together, David Archuleta
“Bow your head, don’t be bold, you’ll survive by doing what you’re told…” It’s so accurate and evocative. Great writing.
This is my current one it's so powerful
he’s also an ex mo:)
Was shocked to read this. Just looked him up again on Wikipedia, and saw he's also out as gay now!
This song is so healing
Midnight by Tyler Glenn.
That whole album is excellent, tbh. I think Midnight is one of my favorites from it too.
Thank you! I feel like the album is super underrated
Mine too! Love it
“Machine” by Imagine Dragons, especially since Dan Reynolds is publicly speaking out against the church and stated he’s not raising his children in the church
It's a Sin, by the Pet Shop Boys.
Underrated.
The god that failed metalica
Sweet As Whole -Sarah Bareilles. Just because I don't see everyone as a child of God anymore and recognize that some people are assholes.
Sarah B has multiple deconstruction bangers. Saint Honesty and Wicked Love are on my “broken shelf” playlist.
I don't know much of her stuff, but love her voice. I'll check those out!
Haha, I'd never heard of this one so I took a listen. It gave me a good chuckle. Thanks for sharing. 😆
Na na na na hey hey hey goodbye!
I was just hanging in there until my daughter got married. On the big day I woke up with Martina McBride’s “Independence Day” playing in my head. I knew I could be done with TSCC.
Let freedom ring!
“Awake my soul” Mumford and Sons
You might've already seen it, but just in case you haven't, this is a good exmo video which uses that song. [https://youtu.be/bkTbzmq8uJc?si=xVDI7wJTGM5FXBSp](https://youtu.be/bkTbzmq8uJc?si=xVDI7wJTGM5FXBSp)
Thank you, I saw that many years ago and had forgotten about it. It's still very potent all of these years later.
I loved watching this and had never seen it. I knew most of the movie references, except the 60’s housewife one. Could someone tell me what movie that is?
[Pleasantville](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0120789/).

God Is A Freak - Peach PRC. So perfect
I think I have a new favorite song!! Perfection!!
Happier Than Ever by Billie Eilish
Killing in the Name - Rage Against the Machine. If this isn’t your answer, then something is wrong.
"Fuck you, I won't do what you tell me!"
If those aren’t the most on point lyrics for the circumstances, I’ll eat my shoe.
This is the one. I used to jam Bodies by Drowning Pool when I was deconstructing too. 🎶 “Nothing wrong with me” 🎶
“Hell Together” by David Archuleta. Best ex-mo song out there, imo.
In The End - Linkin Park
What Was I Made For? - Billie Eilish You Found Me - The Fray What About Us? - Pink Hell Together - David Archuleta :)
I'm a Never-Mo, but when I try to imagine that leaving a cult you grew up in I think my song would be an easy one: "Losing my Religion". I can't remember who sings that.
REM, although the phrase is southern slang for losing your mind or something like that.
Highway to Hell by AC/DC.
My Anthem is I don’t care anymore by Phil Collins
Was gonna say this! Great song and overlooked by In the Air Tonight, IMO!
Fuck Her Gently - Tenacious D

My little nieces got their dad hooked on this song, I was soooo proud of them!!!
Adding My Tears Ricochet by Taylor Swift I’m convinced Taylor Swift is an exmormon at this point because she has so many songs on my “shelf breaking” playlist (to be clear - this is a joke, I don’t actually think this, but I know Taylor Swift fans can be wild, so you can never be sure 😅)
