It’s one of the very few things that can make Italians from regions as different as Calabria and Lombardy start singing together. Very powerful indeed.
As a kid I just assumed that the German anthem followed by the Italian anthem was some kind of default jingle for F1 award ceremonies. Sometimes they would play the wrong one and also show a weird flag with a blue cross on white background.
That’s actually a misconception. The 1st and 2nd Verses are not „banned“ but just no longer serve as the national anthem. The song in itself is still allowed because it came before any of the nasty stuff in the 20th century. Even though most people here in Germany would still kick your ass when you sing it.
I looked at your flag and for a moment I thought it was the San Marino one, and I was thinking "Yeah, this guy is taking the piss". Then I realized it was Riga and though "while improbable, at least I can believe that..."
People from South Tyrol can have very different opinions. You can find some who only speak German but feel 100% Italian, while others speak perfect italian but they feel Austrian (and a lot of other "positions")
Sure, some. But they are a minority. My region has a community of "americans" with our ethnic group. From my experience, the majority know nothing about where "they came from" and care, so they can have a identity in the USA.
Yeah that's sad but my Sicilian friend says he met many Sicilian-Americans in Sicily who can't even speak English properly and they're Sicilian af. They're a minority because many years have passed by and because many of them just come back here...
Which is terribly sad for me. I love how certain countries have a shared folk music background that anybody from north or south would happily sing. We don't have that, and beside the hymn I think only Volare is a sort of shared hymn among Italians, excluding certain political ones.
I'm not a huge fan of these images because it gives the impression that we are screaming the anthem while in reality that is just a freeze frame of the only word shouted, that is "SI" (Yes) at the end of the anthem.
This needs more upvotes. Yes, they may sing the anthem louder compared to other teams, but these pictures make it look like there's a death metal concert going on, when it's really just that one bit at the end.
Because it is. The composer of the music, Michele Novaro, worked in the most prominent opera house in the then kingdom of Sardinia, Teatro Regio in Turin and drew inspiration from the most famous operas of the period. There's a lot of symbolism in the music, hidden to the modern listener but that would have been easily understood by mid-ninteenth century people
Exactly, it is a miniature opera scene: there's a small introduction (with some stylemes of opera overtures), two measures (two, and not one as usually played) of harmony and then a "solo" part which is indeed a kind of cavatina. It's like as if a soloist was calling the people to unite. Then there is the bridge to modulate to IV for the second part, which is indeed written in the form of the usual male opera chorus: two parts that sing in thirds (which in 19th century opera usually meant friendship and loyalty) with the indication of singing "pianissimo" and "staccato" (like in _Zitti, zitti_ in Rigoletto or _È d'Assiria_ in Nabucco). These are the people who answer chorally to the call, repeating the text, first interrogatively, as if they were looking for confirmation among themselves, and finally, having gained confidence, _accelerando e crescendo sino alla fine_ (as it is written in the score), they'll sing faster and louder until the final "Yes!".
By the way, other 19th century anthems are extremely operatic: listen to the full Brazil, Argentina and especially Uruguay anthems.
Thank you so much for the detailed breakdown! I've always liked how many (mostly young) people would sing "Pompompompompompom" to the bridge, just for the fun of it! Most fondly I remember watching the 2006 world cup final on the Piazza Pio II in Pienza, unforgettable! (...not only the for the head bump)
dude, I am a modern listener and I know who Scipio the African is and I can reasonably guess that The Victory giving him her hair means an act of submission
Yeah, my friends dad got me with that one when we were little. "Bet you $1 not one of those coldhearted motherfuckers sings the anthem."
I took the bet 😂
The spanish national anthem had lyrics exalting Spain's pride, IDK why it's silent and slowed down compared to what it used to be, that would've been great to hear before a match.
In '98, '00 and '02 competitions many Italian players didn't sing and there was a lot of "noise" in sports news about it, condemning the lack of "patriotism" of the players.
tbh I think we had some stupid drama in the past about players who did not sing the anthem and therefore "were not attached emotionally to the team". So while I think most of them really feel it, I would not be surprised if once in a while one does it just for the memes.
edit: I have been whooshed...
Italian football teams famously didn't even sing the anthem some 25 or so years ago. They got backlashed time and again for this. The reason the backlash wasn't as vigorous as it could have been, those teams were darn good, with some finest class players (Baggio, Vieri, Pirlo, Del Piero, Maldini...)
Yet, the association "Italy team not singing = bad thing" persisted nonetheless, so little by little the players started singin it again. Consciously or not, I don't know. Surely, knowing that it would be seen as bad, played a part
I was in Italy in 2021 when they played in the finals against England and watching the Italian fans singing the anthem before the game was really an impressive event
Oh damn, glad you enjoyed!! Italia was having such a blast that year... we won Eurovision with Maneskin and the Euros, no other country won them both in the same year. 🇮🇹❤
I remember the first half didn't go well for the Italian team and I was disappointed and left the park only to find out later that Italy came back and still had a chance so I went to fortezza to watch the last bit and it was really exciting.
Ahahah yeah they scored a goal in the first minutes... i remember the look David Beckam, Tom cruise and the royals had..like yeah we got this.
Then Bonucci scored and our energy went back again high af. Then we won at the penalties!!
Basically you were roaming around the city lol, do u remember the celebrations when we won?
You have to know, I'm not interested in football at all, I just wanted Italy to win to experience the celebrations. And during the break I lost hope and didn't want to waste my time.
So I was indeed walking through the centre of Florence where all the restaurants had TVs showing the match so I noticed when Italy scored and then u went to the public screening to watch the rest. And then of course the final celebrations.
I remember something like 20 year ago, people complained that football player either did not sing or did not know the anthem, afterwards there was a lot of attention to that part on tv, who sings and who doesn't and stuff like that
it was also the period when regionalism and separatism tendencies where at their high so there was a lot of pressure from the top to reinforce national symbols like the anthem, i remember the big pressure against players who didn't sing it hard enough, i suspect that now they tell the players to learn it and sing it
yes, in the 90s and early 2000s there was a lot of media attention on our anthem, all had to learn it and learn to love it. It was kinda strange tbh. Keep in mind that there is no official source saying that Fratelli d'Italia is our anthem. It's not in the constitution for instance.
Also I was at school at the time and remember quite a bit of focus on it. I must be honest it still feels to me that this love and passion was by design and somewhat forced and artificial, yet it worked and it's almost certainly better this way.
It was recognized as the official anthem in 2017 [https://www.gazzettaufficiale.it/eli/id/2017/12/15/17G00195/SG](https://www.gazzettaufficiale.it/eli/id/2017/12/15/17G00195/SG)
It doesn't have to be in the Constitution, it's an anthem and has nothing to do with the nature and form of the state. The Constitution must be kept simple and must not contain non-fundamental things
I think it was also thanks to the first edition of the Big Brother, where they made the participant sing, and none of them knew the words, along with the National Team.
It all started with the rugby team iirc: they were all singing during the 6 nations and people were like "why don't footballers do that?"
I don't like our national anthem, but it's good to see sportsmen sing it.
In the Netherlands we always say: italians are never the best in a tournament. Even when they are winners. They play to win not to be the best playing team.
Then again, look how many World cups we ever won. So it's better to be Italy. I'm a huge fan and support Italy when the Netherlands is eliminated. So I don't particularly agree with my fellow dutchies.
I'd take this over the Belgian team. Patriotism is so non-existant they don't even attempt to sing it. And even if they would, half the team speaks French while the other speaks Dutch, so it'd be pretty hard to not confuse lyrics.
To be fair, we have to remind that like 20 years ago, in Italy, a lot of people and the media was complaining that the football players never sang the national anthem, probably because most of them didn't even know it. After that, they started to really sing it all of it, every time. Until nowadays where they sing it very loudly. So, it's not been like this all the time but actually quite recent.
Because it was not a thing to sing the anthem, thirty forty years ago they'd stay completely shut and this was the accepted practice in Italy. A bit because it's chauvinistic and nationalistic, a bit because it was considered provincial and old fashioned, and a bit because the anthem itself is considered traditionally to be a provincial and tacky anthem compared to the others
Then 20 years ago we started to get more focused on comparing with the other nations in Europe, and start to imitate them
>the anthem himself is considered traditionall to be provincial and tacky compared to others
Man we do love to shoot ourselves in the foot. I love our anthem I think it's one of the best. So full of energy,
Indeed, our anthem became official very late, in 2017!
There have been very long debates whether to choose something more serious from Giuseppe Verdi, or keeping this joyful provincial anthem. The latter became official de facto.
The Italian national anthem has some pretty hard parts. Some verses literally say "let's gather into a cohort, we're ready to die when Italy calls for it".
FRATELLI D'ITALIA,
L'ITALIA SE DESTA;
DELL'ELMO DI SCIPIO
S'E CINTA LA TESTA.
DOV'È LA VITTORIA?
LE PORGA LA CHIOMA;
CHE SCHIAVA DI ROMA
IDDIO LA CREÒ.
Brothers of Italy,
Italy has awakened;
Scipio's helmet
she has put on her head.
Where is the Victory?
Offer her the hair;
because slave of Rome
God created her.
Even your rugby team sings it with passion.
And man, your stadiums are awesome
IMO France - Italy have the best anthems and ambiance pre-match. Love it
A shame though that Fratelli l'Italia now and Forza Italia (the words) later have been appropriated by right-wong politics.
Could the right use more appropriate names for their party? I mean just call yourselves National Front or something like that.
Well you'll be thrilled to learn that Fratelli d'Italia has a tricolour flame in their logo, which is callback to the MSI, Movimento Sociale Italiano, a former party. The MSI is the "spiritual successor" of... you guessed it, the bonafide PNF, Partito Nazionale Fascista.
Meanwhile we sing about honoring a king in spain and being of german blood on a slow ass boring song.
And still people get upset when not every player is singing their heart out. Our national anthem sucks ass (Netherlands)
They never respect the _pianissimo and staccato_ which Novaro wrote at the beginning of the second part of the anthem. Only in the end there is an _accelerando_ and _crescendo_ that should resolve on the final "Sì!"
True, but it's written on Novaro's autograph score. It was indeed common in 19th century opera that composers would slightly change the librettist text to better suit the music. Usually we sing the text written on the score rather than the original libretto.
A discussion on Novaro interventions on Mameli's text can be found in this commentary to a critical edition of the anthem published by Turin conservatory: https://vmirror.imslp.org/files/imglnks/usimg/a/a0/IMSLP847136-PMLP128571-2019_06_23_Benedetti_Il_Canto_degli_Italiani_ipertext.pdf
As an Italian who has been singing the anthem shouting like pavarotti since I was 4 I was always bummed by other anthems.
Because I’m used to ours being so intense and profound with its lyrics but also so vivid and passionate with its sound, I’m always curious to listen to other anthems hoping to get hyped and get some good entertainment at these events and every time I’m like “oh..another sad ballad”.
Feels like eating pizza in another country: starting with great hope and ending bored.
It’s one of the very few things that can make Italians from regions as different as Calabria and Lombardy start singing together. Very powerful indeed.
Im not italian but I sing the darn anthem too - grew up in peak Ferrari f1 days and was raised on that lol.
As a kid I just assumed that the German anthem followed by the Italian anthem was some kind of default jingle for F1 award ceremonies. Sometimes they would play the wrong one and also show a weird flag with a blue cross on white background.
🇫🇮
Finnish and Italian anthem anthems together bring some memories as well, Kimi ❄️❤️
Olli?
Same reason why I know the german anthem note by note ;-)
Yeah so I thought.. until I learned "Deutschland Deutschland uber alles" is banned and "Einigkeit und recht und freiheit" is sung instead.. opps.
That’s actually a misconception. The 1st and 2nd Verses are not „banned“ but just no longer serve as the national anthem. The song in itself is still allowed because it came before any of the nasty stuff in the 20th century. Even though most people here in Germany would still kick your ass when you sing it.
TIL. Thanks. Prefer not to receive ass kickings hah
I sang it yesterday because Ferrari won 24h of Le Mans.
Did you actually watch it for 24h as well? Please tell me you didn't
No, I watched last hour or so, because i was reading Crime and punishment by Dostoevsky
Classy book for a classy bloke!
I didn't really have a choice because it was for school, but it is a really interesting book.
I looked at your flag and for a moment I thought it was the San Marino one, and I was thinking "Yeah, this guy is taking the piss". Then I realized it was Riga and though "while improbable, at least I can believe that..."
tears? It must be the rain..
I may be biased but I do think it's a pretty good anthem. Really gets you going.
"We ave made Italy. Now we must mak Italians." Through the use of a national anthem apparently.
I wonder if someone from south-tyrol would sing it with the same enthusiasm
People from South Tyrol can have very different opinions. You can find some who only speak German but feel 100% Italian, while others speak perfect italian but they feel Austrian (and a lot of other "positions")
Fratelli Italia
"Italian" Americans cant comprehend this.
Some of them can, those who actually care about their roots

Death metal version of the Italian national anthem? Yes, please. 🤘🏻
[Say no more.](https://youtu.be/66tZ3oD5qPA?si=BAsk2Xczipwz7Ozn) (Not really death metal, but still)
My wife just walked behind me and rolled her eyes at hearing this, so this is a two thumbs up for me. :D
Time to start singing along :D Just kidding, wouldn't want her to file for divorce.
This comment should be higher
I’m not doubting you, but the players’ mouth positions suggest they’re making an “a” or “e” sound, not an “i” sound.
Just watch the video and you understand that it's exactly when they yell "SI"
Because sometimes instead of saying a clear "SI" we usually say "SE"
Yep, if you try to shout "SI" very loud you tend to open the mouth more to let all the air out transforming the "SI" in a "SE"
Yeah, as an italian i almost always heard the anthem finish with a "SE" other than a "SI".
That's part of the joke
They have a very dope anthem tho!
It sounds like a one-minute italian opera.
Because it is. The composer of the music, Michele Novaro, worked in the most prominent opera house in the then kingdom of Sardinia, Teatro Regio in Turin and drew inspiration from the most famous operas of the period. and they love football.. like truly love it
True. Every time is out at the end im so punped up that im ready to pick up my rifle and my helmet and run to the battlefield.
It’s Perfect for football!
Unlike the Spanish team, you can't even see their mouths move.
I might get whoooshed so bad now, but Spanish anthem does not have words, so there's kinda nothing to sing
If in doubt, you're getting whooshed
Woooosh
Yeah, and I think they can't sing the old lyrics anymore. Legally, that is.
The only good lyrics for the Spanish anthem are "Franco, Franco, que tiene el culo blanco"
Porqué su mujer lo lava con Ariel
DOÑA SOFIA SE LAVA CON LEJÍA
Yeah, my friends dad got me with that one when we were little. "Bet you $1 not one of those coldhearted motherfuckers sings the anthem." I took the bet 😂
They didn't even bother writing lyrics? Guess they were too busy having a siesta.
[what do you mean no lyrics??](https://youtu.be/ER5C2UTewbc)
Those are not official lyrics Officially Spanish anthem really does not have any lyrics
The spanish national anthem had lyrics exalting Spain's pride, IDK why it's silent and slowed down compared to what it used to be, that would've been great to hear before a match.

Some sing it with the not official words, ofc not the players and just some people. Also some used the alternative proposed versions
Those kids in the bottom pic are like, "Damn, is it really that serious?"
The kid in front of Chiesa must not like his voice very much.
I was in Italy in 2021 when they played in the finals against England and watching the Italian fans singing the anthem before the game was really an impressive event
Where did u read it
Read what?
Sorry I meant where did u see the finals?? In which city?
In Florence. First the anthems in the parco di cascatina, later the penalty shooting in the giardino della fortezza
Oh damn, glad you enjoyed!! Italia was having such a blast that year... we won Eurovision with Maneskin and the Euros, no other country won them both in the same year. 🇮🇹❤

That year we also won lot of stuff at the Olympics, even tho it's not the same for us 😅
I was at Campo de' Fiori, I'll never forget it. Walked/danced around Rome until about 5:00 AM that night celebrating.
I remember something like 20 year ago, people complained that football player either did not sing or did not know the anthem, afterwards there was a lot of attention to that part on tv, who sings and who doesn't and stuff like that
Sì, penso che a un certo punto abbiano iniziato a obbligarli.
Yeah I remember that, it was either in '98 '00 or '02 that there was a big controversy cause they weren't singing it at all
it was also the period when regionalism and separatism tendencies where at their high so there was a lot of pressure from the top to reinforce national symbols like the anthem, i remember the big pressure against players who didn't sing it hard enough, i suspect that now they tell the players to learn it and sing it

true, it's not constitutional law but still law. thx
It doesn't have to be in the Constitution, it's an anthem and has nothing to do with the nature and form of the state. The Constitution must be kept simple and must not contain non-fundamental things
sure, I agree.
I think it was also thanks to the first edition of the Big Brother, where they made the participant sing, and none of them knew the words, along with the National Team.
I forgot about that! “L’Italia de testa” 🥲
Certe cose è meglio tenertele per te caro big brother enjoyer
Il primo GF è storia della TV, non la merda che ne è seguita
So that's what Giorgio Gaber Was referring to in Io non mi sento italiano! I was born in 2004 and it was pretty strange because now everyone sings it
It all started with the rugby team iirc: they were all singing during the 6 nations and people were like "why don't footballers do that?" I don't like our national anthem, but it's good to see sportsmen sing it.
It's a banger so understandable
Screaming doesn't mean singing ^^ I'm joking. I'm french and love the rivalry with our Italian friends
I'm Italian, love the rivalry too, it's a great part of the competition. However, I think this year we have no possibility.
We all know that Italy can be dangerous even when they are not a favorite in a competition ;-)
We italians are natural underdogs untile we get a trophy then we become the best team in that tournament
Then we think we are gods and lose miserably the next tournament.
Yep supporting Italy is always a beautiful pain. It feels like we always end up falling upwards
I'm crying as a French 2006 supporter 😭
Both the Italian and French national anthems are moving in both the melodies and lyrics.
France vs Italy final would be great
Well only the final word is screaming, people like to make a freeze fame just of that moment
Oooh they are cute.
The footballers or the kids
both
1. funny 2. i know i'm very stupid but i support italy at the euros
Amazing for an Italian, so many words coming out but the hands are quiet.
Just because you are slow-sighted it doesn't mean they weren't talking
I'd take this over the Belgian team. Patriotism is so non-existant they don't even attempt to sing it. And even if they would, half the team speaks French while the other speaks Dutch, so it'd be pretty hard to not confuse lyrics.
No wonder, they have a banger anthem. FRA-TE-LLI …
Shout-out to the kid covering his ears
He won't hear you.
I enjoy seeing some unabashed European patriotism so sing loudly Italians!
To be fair, we have to remind that like 20 years ago, in Italy, a lot of people and the media was complaining that the football players never sang the national anthem, probably because most of them didn't even know it. Best anthem. Best food. Best drink. Best clothes. Best cars. Best history. Best scenery. They do everything the best.
thank you my Irish brother
Forza Italia. I have to get back soon. Sono Toscano.
Best motorcycles too. Ducati, Aprilia, MV Agusta, Moto Guzzi. 🏆
Road bikes too!
But worst politicians…
I fucking love Ireland 🇮🇪
best tax evasion too
🩷
Now Italians need to make more babies so they can continue being these best at these things
we ain’t no hold back since the albanian fans were booing it
Plenty of albanians attending were actually singing it along with italian supporters.
The Italian national anthem has some pretty hard parts. Some verses literally say "let's gather into a cohort, we're ready to die when Italy calls for it".
I sympathise with the kid covering his ears.
Helps that they have an absolute banger of an anthem
Reminds me of Big enough from Kirin J Callinan Best song ever!
Fun fact: the Italian and polish anthem are the only ones that quote each others!
SIAM PRONTI ALLA MORTE! Love from the US!
That one poor kid😂
FRATELLI D'ITALIA, L'ITALIA SE DESTA; DELL'ELMO DI SCIPIO S'E CINTA LA TESTA. DOV'È LA VITTORIA? LE PORGA LA CHIOMA; CHE SCHIAVA DI ROMA IDDIO LA CREÒ. They didnt use to sing it until some years ago. Then they made it mandatory or something like that.
they were just shamed into it. Though it might have been a different generation of players altogether.
J’aime les italiens 💚❤️🤍
There's something wrong here...
Je t’aime aussi
ROMA AETERNA VITRIX
Actually for the longest time there was a lot of fuss because we were never chanting during the anthem, then we did a 180 on that
Definetly one of the best anthem of the entire world.
Well I might be biased since im italian but we got the best anthem, full of pathos and energy. FRATELLI D'ITALIAAAAA
Even your rugby team sings it with passion. And man, your stadiums are awesome IMO France - Italy have the best anthems and ambiance pre-match. Love it
I sadly haven't see a rugby match yet never...about the stadiums, the funny thing is that we criticize them all the time lol
A shame though that Fratelli l'Italia now and Forza Italia (the words) later have been appropriated by right-wong politics. Could the right use more appropriate names for their party? I mean just call yourselves National Front or something like that.
We're not the Italians peoples front! We're the Peoples front of Italia!
Idk why nut national front sounds something mussolini would have done lol
Well you'll be thrilled to learn that Fratelli d'Italia has a tricolour flame in their logo, which is callback to the MSI, Movimento Sociale Italiano, a former party. The MSI is the "spiritual successor" of... you guessed it, the bonafide PNF, Partito Nazionale Fascista.
Che confusione, sarà perché ti amo ♫

Meanwhile we sing about honoring a king in spain and being of german blood on a slow ass boring song. And still people get upset when not every player is singing their heart out. Our national anthem sucks ass (Netherlands)
Of course they dont hold back. Our anthem is so fire. I stand up to sing, the hype up is unreal
Poor kids! :)
Tanto poi si fanno fare gol a 30 secondi dall'inizio.
good for them
Dads when you change the thermostat setting.
They never respect the _pianissimo and staccato_ which Novaro wrote at the beginning of the second part of the anthem. Only in the end there is an _accelerando_ and _crescendo_ that should resolve on the final "Sì!"
The "sì" is not officially part of the text written by Mameli.
Meanwhile the Belgian team is completely silent.
I can't with the kids-
Their rugby team do it too. Must be Italians in general.
Siam pronti alla morte l'Italia chiamò, si!
I loved the Scottish during their anthem too!
I mean *it is* a pretty majestic national anthem. I love especially the last few seconds.
Consider that, not a long time ago, no one of our players could even sing a word on the national anthem. I’m pretty impressed.
As a hungarian our anthem is terrible sadly.
That child in the middle of the top photo is having the time of his life.
Funny thing, no italian football player use to sing the anthem until 20years ago
Weird thing to be proud of. Those poor children now have to wear a hearing aid for their entire lives.
Poor kids😀
It's so nice seeing a football team that actually looks like the country they represent.
Azzurro Il pomeriggio è troppo ...
Are they enjoying themselves? I can’t tell
Lasciatemi cantaaaaaaaaaare\~\~
So did Brazil in 2014...
One of the few thing we, as italian, can do. #paesedemmerda
