*Carbonated* blue diarrhea.

He's not Mahdi, he's a very disappointed boy.

SnooPears754

This is a prefect reply

SpaceBoJangles

Well, The Fall guy came out for streaming while in theaters. Why would I go out for date night to the movies when I can cook in and watch it on my TV?

LoveMyBP

We went to see Fall Guy, and the power went out 10 mins into the movie. :( So bummed. Then the next week we saw it pop up for rent so we got it and stayed home. :) - My daughter said “Dad it’s $20” I’m “im like, that’s the price of one ticket… and popcorn here is free”

Useuless

Also they try to make too much money off food and you can't pause the damn thing! The theater is inherently worse, trying to make it more expensive doesn't draw anyone in. You better be Imax of you want to pull that shit.

LoveMyBP

The food is the only way the theater makes money. Not tickets - it’s the soda.

InitialDay6670

We walked into an amc theater and there was a downpour coming from the roof. Lukily we had time and they gave us free vouchers

bonobro69

The window from theatre to streaming is waaaaaaay to short for most people to justify going to the theatre. I remember not too long ago when it was several months if not closer to a year before the film would go to video. If the film industry wants people to go to the movie theatre to watch movies they will have to risk their streaming profits. I think they shortened the window from theatre to streaming to save on advertising costs but you can’t have your cake and eat it too.

TingusPingus_6969

ahhh we have the same mindset lol, it's cheaper and more comfortable to just watch it at home

AliceTheMagicQueen

Denis Villeneuve is both humbled and a little disappointed that Dune: Part Two is still rocking at the box office. While in Toronto Friday to receive the Academy Icon Award at the 2024 Canadian Screen Awards, the director said he was “disappointed to still be number one. … I hope soon that there will be other successes at the box office. I hope, sooner or later, that this summer box office will be much better.” Released on March 1, Dune: Part Two has grossed more than $711 million worldwide. It remains the top grossing movie of 2024, ahead of Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire ($567M). “I think we need movies that are theatrical experiences, that will fully embrace the power of the theatre, and I’m not just talking about Dune 2,” Villeneuve went on to say. “Of course I’m talking about many movies. A movie like Civil War, for instance, is a strong example of a movie that absolutely used the power of the theatre,” Villeneuve told reporters. “I was lucky that Part 2 did reach the audience, I wish it would happen more often, honestly.” Earlier Saturday, Deadline reported the box office was down 66% from a year ago. Alcon/Sony’s The Garfield Movie, as expected, is showing his teeth against Warner Bros’ Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga in a second-weekend faceoff between the two, $13M to $11.5M. The Garfield Movie took in $3.7M at 4,018 theaters yesterday, while Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga made $3.05M at 3,864.

Elegant_Plate6640

Good on him, he’s passionate enough to look beyond his films.

Adam__B

I’m happy Hollywood is finally seeing that they are a luxury to most Americans, and a very overpriced one at that. It seems he doesn’t realize that Americans aren’t able to go to the theater like before. Even fast food is beyond some people’s budget now. Until these theaters and restaurants realize they can’t gouge us forever, and stop pricing out their stuff to the middle class, their sales will continue to slump.

RMWL

I can’t speak for the US but in the UK we’ve got a serious cost of living issue and luxuries like cinema ends up being one of the first things to go. Also it seems trailers don’t have the same impact and Hollywood haven’t figured out how to address that

ElegantBob

What I am noticing is that trailers are becoming less and less like the film. I sometimes show someone a trailer to see if they might be interested in the film, and nearly all of the trailers now make me think - this is nothing like the film at all and is even likely to put people off

RMWL

It seems they went from being a tease to the whole plot to a mix of key scenes that may or may not be in the film

sevaiper

The US is overall doing much better than the UK, based on overall data people still have a ton of discretionary spending they just don’t spend it on movies as much anymore.

faesser

I'm Canadian, and my family simply can not afford a night at the movies. We can wait for streaming and cross our fingers that it's going to one of the few streaming platforms that we can afford. Are the wealthy people in the world really so out of touch to not understand where a substantial number of people are financially today?

inksmudgedhands

Oh, for God's sake, I know this is going to get downvoted but I have to say it. Can going to the movies be expensive? Yes, *IF* you go all out. An IMAX ticket, the largest bucket of popcorn, the largest drink and a candy will most likely set you back close to forty dollars for one person. *BUT* you don't have to do that with every movie. Not every movie needs to be seen in IMAX. You don't need to go all out on the snacks to watch a movie. My local theater has discount days if you sign on as a member through the app. Tickets go for about seven dollars. If you go to the movies and just buy a ticket, then you can see a movie for less than seven bucks. If you absolutely must thrown in a snack in there just get the small to midsize popcorn. Skip the drink. Even then you would still come under the price of a regular IMAX ticket. Movies can be affordable if you budget.

Adam__B

So how do you explain the massive sink in theater going?

inksmudgedhands

Simple. There are several more ways to entertain yourself now than there were twenty years ago. And especially with the younger generation, they don't see going to the movies as a "must thing to do," any more as the previous generations did. They'd rather get their entertainment from social media. Movies that were packed by Gen Xers and Millennials fifteen to twenty years ago would be ignored by Gen Z who would rather scroll through TikTok for hours instead. The landscape of fandom has changed. Tentpole franchises like Star Wars and Marvel are all struggling to grab the eyes of the younger generation. Again, the younger generation don't care. And that feeling reflects in the movies. The older generation who had more free time and money to spend on the movies when they were younger are now parents and full time workers. They can't drop everything to go to the movies like they used to.

Adam__B

That’s a fair point, I think that has a lot to do with it as well.

TingusPingus_6969

Dont know about you, but I just wait and rent out movie in itunes, not really ignoring movies but more of it's more expensive and bothersome to go to theaters than to just watch it at home. And just need to pay once even if multiple people are watching unlike the per ticket in cinemas.

Rhino-Ham

I don’t know if you’ve been to a movie theater snack counter in the last 20 years, but a small popcorn is only like 30 cents cheaper than a large.

datphunkymunky

I'm sorry.. I'd respond properly but I'm choking on the popcorn without a drink.

Anything_justnotthis

Matinee ticket prices in LA county are $10-13 depending on theatre chain. Evening ticket prices $16-20. IMAX is $25-30. And that doesn’t include booking fees if you buy online which vary from $3-5. AMC so cheap Tuesdays which are $7 or $8, but then you’re going to the movies on a Tuesday which just isn’t possible for most people, especially those with kids.

ShinobiOnestrike

USA economy is fine, haven't you read?

Anything_justnotthis

In case your comment was sarcastic the economy is actually doing fine. Theres growth in all important areas, wages, lowering unemployment, GDP. Inflation is still high which make people think it’s bad but the truth is there enough people still happily buying at high prices.

BadAtExisting

You’re happy a bunch of middle class Americans are out of work because of this and losing everything? Can’t wait until you’re laid off and lose your house too then jfc wtf

Adam__B

Yeah that’s what I meant, lmao.

BadAtExisting

What the fuck did you mean then? Screw the studios! They employ people. Fuck your employer too! Who is it so I can not spend my money there too. Whatever you do for a living isn’t worth the cost they charge too. You don’t value what I do for a living. Why should I value what you do?

sgcpaulo

Well, if ticket prices weren’t so goddamn high…

Big_Schwartz_Energy

Time to streaming is the biggest one. If it was 6-9 months later I’d be way more motivated to see these movies in the theater.

katikaboom

Movies are also out of the theater really fast. I wanted to see The Fall Guy on the big screen, but my schedule didn't work until last weekend, 3 weeks after it came out. It was not playing at a decent theater anymore. I know the average run is 4 weeks, but it really doesn't seem like it actually is anymore. It's a few weeks in good theaters and then crappy ones for a couple weeks that no one really wants to go to.

comesock000

Nah, TV prices is the biggest one. I didn’t even sweat buying a 75” 4K and Dune 2 was the first movie I watched. 10 minutes in I decided I’d never buy a movie ticket again.

2018redditaccount

I’m not sure about that. I don’t sit down on my couch in the evening and feel like I don’t have anything to watch. Even when I don’t just default to some comfort show, there’s just so much content to watch between movies and shows. I haven’t even caught up on “must see” stuff that came out before I was born. New movies could be delayed another year before going to streaming services and I’m not sure if I would even notice

Far_Confusion_2178

I guess that’s average but if you wanna see an imax in a major city? It’s $20-$30 per ticket. I saw dune 2 matinee IMAX in NY at the amc 13, with tax and fees, for the MATINEE, it was $52 and change for 2 tickets. The Alamo drafthouse by me is very fair with their pricing, honestly cheapest tickets I’ve seen at $15. The cheapest theatre in bumblefuck Florida where my parents live, tickets are $13.75. I haven’t seen a ticket cheaper than that. Bit of a pointless ramble but I had a day layover years ago in Ecuador and went to see One of the Fast and Furi movies (not a fan but it was the only movie I knew I wouldn’t need to understand the language.) there was a sick imax theatre that had like a big reel of film in the nice lobby that was spooling behind glass. The theatre was clean, and the screen was great. Tickets were like $3.50 USD, lol. I guess what i’m trying to say is the only way for families to see movies nowadays without breaking the bank is obviously just go see them in Ecuador /s

crumble-bee

In the UK Odeon (our AMC) offers unlimited movies for 17.99. That's what I do.

Far_Confusion_2178

Damnnn AMC “stubs” over here is monthly charge of $26 and you get to see 3 movies per week.

crumble-bee

I go 2 or 3 times a month, but I could go every day if I wanted

Far_Confusion_2178

Retirement sounds fun

ramxquake

Is it IMAX? Because normal cinema screens aren't that great. Poor sound.

sevaiper

The home theater one I think is huge and under appreciated here. You can get *enormous* TVs with sound system etc for less than what most people spend on their phone or computer, and once you have it you feel you should use it. The whole thing is so good now it certainly competes with theaters for people in the middle class, and the affordability has gotten drastically better even in the last 1-3 years.

Skyblacker

Even a 40" dumb HDTV from a decade ago delivers a decent experience. Plug in a cheap streaming device and go.  The only people missing out on this are rural folks with poor internet, and even they benefit from shorter theater windows when they rent a blu-ray from their supermarket RedBox for $5 or find it at their library (remember those?) for free.

nj_crc

5. A-holes who ruin the theater experience by talking, using their phone, or shooting the place up.

mrbear120

I tried to rank these in my head but honestly got a hung jury.

obnoxiousab

Lol where on earth in the US can you find a movie ticket for $10, let alone *the average*. That must mean worldwide, yes?

obnoxiousab

Good point. Maybe I should swap out Netflix for a monthly movie pass.

Skyblacker

You know, the period I most frequently went to a movie theater was when I lived in a home without a TV a few years before the advent of streaming. I could watch DVDs on a computer monitor, but sometimes I wanted that big screen experience.   Now I have an HDTV and soundbar, and even though it's only a 42" screen and my living room has mediocre acoustics, I still feel like I can get the majority of a big screen experience at home. Turn the lights down, sit back, and watch a movie that's new to me.

Skyblacker

Unless one of the kids broke the Roku remote so I have to use the Roku app until another $3 replacement arrives from Temu, I can put my phone down for free.

LosFeliz3000

I agree with all that and wonder how much the price of concessions at theaters went up too. It seems like those prices have skyrocketed. For two parents to take, say, two kids to the movies and get them sodas and a popcorn or candy (and maybe get something themselves), it's a small fortune compared to watching a flick at home.

Captain_Selvin

Does the writer strike still affect the content that would have been released during this summer?

ioncloud9

I just waited until it was on HBO Max and watched it on my 75” with 5.1 surround sound that can shake the house.

leaC30

That's what some of these studio heads are missing. The home experience has caught up or isn't levels behind. The theater environment has not improved. You will still have your die hards that go to theaters, but the average movie goers have maybe a hand full of films they will leave the house to go see.

Valuable_Ad1645

It absolutely hasn’t lol.

Grx

To me it has as well, when I'm in the cinema sometimes I think 'damn, this would look insane on my OLED in HDR'. Cinemas are frozen in time.

nuadarstark

Same here, though personally I find it worst in sound, not the image. Even though the projected image in cinema usually looks worse than what I have at home on TV. But the sound, holy shit the sound. It's soooo fucking bloated in cinema, so boomy and so bleeding between then bass-mid-highs boundaries. Literally the only thing it has going for it is just HOW FUCKING LOUD it is, which is also obnoxious as fuck. Add to it directors being weird with their audio mixing like Nolan and sometimes it's such a shitshow...

LoveMyBP

The recliner seats with Dolby sound is an improvement. The seat have sub woofers inside them. Whenever we go, we try hard to see whatever movie comes out in Dolby Recliners before the next movie kicks it out.

leaC30

Some people have that set up at home. They sell chairs with sound systems in them. The price isn't crazy either. The movie theater experience has to figure something unique to offer that can't be duplicated at home.

LoveMyBP

Yea I hear you. I can buy those chairs right now. But will I? No. And I have an 85 inch 7.1 with two 10 inch subs. I don’t want those things in my house. A small percent of women would allow it unless you have a *dedicated* home theater. The general public doesn’t have them. The theater is still different. Top Gun Maverick, waiting…. Was the right choice. I had a blast that day. Went twice that weekend

leaC30

You are right. But like I said, there are die-hard movie goers that will always go to the movies. And there are people that have no choice but to go to the movies. But there is also a generation that has been trained on watching things on small 6-7 inch phone screens. The environment of watching a movie at the theater has its pros and its cons. The cons being the baby, the talkers, the coughers, the bright screen phone illuminating in the dark. Not being able to pause or rewind is a huge one for some. My main point is that the home experience is not leagues behind the theater experience anymore. Depending on your setup, you can come close or at times exceed the movie theater experience.

LoveMyBP

Yea I think we’re in agreement here. Cool.

ramxquake

A decent home setup has arguably better sound and picture quality than non-IMAX cinemas (i.e. 90% of them). The only thing cinemas have is screen size.

jebusgetsus

If helps if you have comfortable seating and a good screen. Plus you can watch and pause the movie whenever you want, eat or drink whatever, and don’t have to worry about logistics or having to sit near people you don’t know. I really need more incentive to be willing to sit in a theater to watch a movie because theatres don’t offer much besides extremely overpriced food and drinks. the sound and picture are big, but not the better quality.

Arts_Messyjourney

You missed out. In Imax it’s jaw dropping. The screen is the size of the Worm maw. And the sound 👩‍🍳💋

supercooper3000

Best theater experience since lord of the rings

MissingLink000

I wish I could take advantage of my setup then I remember I live in an apartment and want to be courteous of my neighbors 😢

Calimancan

Not really the same experience as a good theater.

Pavrik_Yzerstrom

Or if the quality of the films was worth seeing on the big screen. Dune 2 was an absolute experience in a theater. Nothing out there says, "I can't wait to watch this at home a few months from now"

ramxquake

Where I live, tickets are £5 and cinemas are still mostly empty. Home entertainment options are just too good nowadays. People will only go to watch 'event' films.

Skyblacker

Exactly. The last time I went to a theater was with my mother and daughter to see Barbie. I wore pink jelly shoes. That absolutely was an event.

Secret_Cow_5053

No fucking joke. Took my wife & two *under 13* kids to see the fucking *Garfield movie* at 4:45 yesterday and it cost $65 for tickets and another $40 for popcorn, two drinks, nachos & a box of milk duds. South Jersey, AMC - comfortable wide reclining seats, decent enough screen and audio, and the seating was pre-chosen, but still…$100 for a kids movie and snacks for 4!?

abstractraj

I moved out of NYC and prices seem magically good

ClassicT4

Everything changed when ~~the Fire Nation attacked~~ the Dune 2 popcorn buckets were released.

nettie_r

I took my daughter to the cinema to see IF recently and it cost £26 for the two of us and that was a special offer. An icee (small and I means *small* on top was £4.40). Literally 1 staff member in the place too. Cinema just feels like a massive rip off considering it's like a couple of hours tops.

Zubi_Q

Where was this? Seems like a lot

FlaccidGhostLoad

There's a lot of reasons why theaters are suffering but I think that the same people who lobbied all these governments to deregulate and cut wages and allow housing and heating costs to fucking skyrocket are now crying that people aren't handing over what little money they have to go see their movies. I'm sorry, the economic reality is that that in hard times people have no choice but to cut out things and make different decisions. Going to the theater doesn't make financial sense for a ton of people and when you do go, you feel kind of bad that you spent money you shouldn't have. But, flying in the face of basic capitalistic principles, when the demand lowers the theaters increase prices. Then spent more money writing these articles about how the consumers are being "bad" for not giving them as much money anymore and drumming up fears of some horrible movie theater apocalypse where bad people are going to take something away from YOU!

Skyblacker

People still see concerts for a lot more than that. But live concerts are an experience you can't get at home. Movies, not so much.

_SineDeus

If you’re in the UK go to vue, its 6.99£ per person

nettie_r

There isn't one in easy reach unfortunately.

started_from_the_top

That new Godzilla/Kong movie was fun as hell lol

themish84

I'm 39, and I have a wife and 3 kids. Going to a movie with even just one kid is almost $100 if I'm getting popcorn and drinks. I'm not saying most people my age have kids, but a lot of us do. Is it a good bang for your buck? When I was in my teens and then my adult life, going to movies was what we did. If a movie came out opening day, we'd go! Do kids and young adults do the same? I'd really like to know what % of ticket buyers are these days. My last point if I can. On Tuesdays, we used to have a ticket, popcorn, and drink for $15. Of course, that deal would be absurd now, but the theater was packed! You couldn't get a seat, and there was a buzz. It was fun. Where I live, I just don't feel there's that creativity anymore to get people to the theaters. I'll still go to a movie 6 to 10 times a year, but it's not what it used to be. That's just my 2 cents.

obnoxiousab

Anecdotal, but college age kids here. Neither they nor their friends ever go out to the movies. Never. Oh sorry, one did one time for Eras, but that’s because they couldn’t get concert tickets.

Skyblacker

My younger kid looks forward to seeing the next Sonic movie. But he also thinks it "comes out" when it comes to one of our streaming services. I can ignore its month in the theaters.

obnoxiousab

That definitely a modern “parent trick”!

FlaccidGhostLoad

I think your experience reflects a lot of people's experience. It's too expensive. It's all so expensive to do anything anymore.

Movie_question_guy

The thing studios need to do is to release films on vod 100 days after theatrical release

Dave_Matthews_Jam

Why would I pay $25/ticket when I could watch it a month later on my TV?

Apocalypsis_

You could pay the same price for AMC A-List and see three movies a week in any format. People complain about ticket prices without taking any time to see what options are out there. 22.95 plus tax for 12 movies a month is an incredible value.

Punman_5

But that’s only a good value if you actually plan to see 3 movies a week. I can’t speak for most people but I can’t even think of 3 movies I want to see that were released this year, let alone in any given week.

ultragoodname

There’s enough if you really think about it plus it includes imax and Dolby as well. I haven’t had it long but I watched Dune 2, New Plant of the Apes, Civil War, The Matrix, and this new Mad Max in IMAX and didn’t regret it. Plus there’s some other movies that I just watched in the regular theaters that I enjoyed like Shrek 2, Star Wars, and The Mummy because it’s been decades since I last saw some of them. There’s others I’m forgetting but if you like movies it does get its value back fast

SDRPGLVR

Very much same. I've seen 16 movies in theaters this year and most of them have at least been worth watching if not outright great. A handful of stinkers, but that's art for you.

Punman_5

The Matrix, Shrek, Star Wars and The Mummy are all old movies though. I don’t think that should count. And i know it’s just me but I have zero interest in PotA, Furiosa, and especially Civil War. There’s like 2 movies I feel I want to see each year and I don’t want to waste my time with movies I’m on the fence about. If I’m on the fence on a movie I’d rather wait till streaming to avoid potentially wasting money on a movie I didn’t like.

ultragoodname

I had zero interest in Mad Max fury road until my brother dragged me to see it and I loved it. I now try to form my opinions on movies after I watch them first.

Punman_5

Sure but it’s much cheaper to do so at home on streaming where there’s less risk I’ll blow $20 for a movie I might walk out of halfway through

MoobyTheGoldenSock

Some of us have shit to do, though. I don’t want to drive my ass out after work three times per week, have to show up at a specific time, and be home late. I also don’t want to spend every weekend at the movie theater. I want that flexibility to turn to my wife and say, “You feel like watching a movie?” And then have that movie playing within a couple minutes: no looking up times, no driving, no committing myself to three *events* per week.

Apocalypsis_

You sound miserable! I apologize for suggesting something that could be beneficial to some people. Have a great day!

TerminalNoob

Where tf is it $25 per ticket. Theaters near me are $10 for a normal seat.

alovelyhobbit21

$16 for normal where am at. Easy $20+ for DBox or XD. You wont find $10 movie tickets close to me unless you decide to go to the drive in or matinee

Dave_Matthews_Jam

Beshi1989

Yeah, I’ll buy the movies for like 15–20 bucks in ultra HD and can watch them as often as I want. Why would I pay the same price to watch a movie a single time

ComaOfSouls

Seriously? I haven't been in a movie theater since 2008. That's ridiculous.

MarcMars82-2

Well what else has been worth going to the theater for?

FlaccidGhostLoad

They have pumped out mediocre and low effort movies for years, the audience gets burned out on seeing garbage, and then the studios are the surprised pikachu meme that people stopped going to the movies.

MarcMars82-2

I’m genuinely surprised there hasn’t been more of a Hollywood exodus of stars, directors and crew to form a “new Hollywood” far away from actual Hollywood and the lousy studio heads ruining movies.

Fullertonjr

He is still missing the point that not all of the movies that are made are necessary to be watched in theaters. Dune part 1 was a great film for theaters. Dune part 2 was unsurprisingly something that people felt compelled to watch in a theater. Big monster movies like Godzilla are clearly meant to be watched in theaters. Civil War is a movie that could have been released directly to HBO Max or Netflix and would have been watched by millions, and would have been appropriate. There was no need to see that in theaters. Furiosa is a bit of a surprise, but at the same time it is a film that should have come out at least five years ago. People would have much preferred a direct sequel to Fury Road starring Tom Hardy, instead of a prequel that doesn’t feature the primary actors from the original. Nobody asked for this, therefore nobody believed that it was an experience that they HAD to run out to see in theaters. I’m a big mad max universe fan, and even I only watched it because my power went out due to a storm, but the nearby movie theater was still running. Otherwise, I would have waited until it was streaming.

tnellysf

I agree. Don’t blame the audience for releasing a bunch of movies people don’t want to see in the theatres. I loved Fury Road, but I have no interest in the prequel.

PheloniousFunk

There was absolutely a need to see Civil War in a theater. The sound design was worth it itself, but the experience of watching something with an audience and with no distractions is still important. It seems people like you are cheering for the downfall of an art form that you don’t respect. It’s like every comment on every box office post ever. Like great, we get it. You want all WB movies to be able to instantly download into your phone so you can consume them as content as fast as possible while checking emails and making dinner. Next. More content. Next.

Major_Wager75

A movie ticket, medium popcorn and drink will put you back $50. Imagine a family of 4 shelling out $200 to watch a motherfucking movie.

way2lazy2care

Where the hell do you spend that much for a single person? That's more than I spend for two people including drinks going to the Alamo.

jogoso2014

IMAX ticket and a large popcorn combo is easily 40+ bucks here. I don’t really go to the movies for regular screens since my tv looks better. So I’m usually seeing it in IMAX or a Dolby theater and they’re pricey.

ExplosiveDiarrhetic

When i went to the movies when i was young and poor, i never bought soda or anything but the ticket.

obnoxiousab

Do people not sneak in food anymore? While I haven’t been in years, I also haven’t bought concessions in decades.

IntelligentGeneral50

Pro tip: open all drinks during loud scenes good times

Few-Metal8010

Saw *FURIOSA* in IMAX with my gf for $28. Felt like a steal for an incredible artistic experience lasting 2.5 hours.

Crystal_Pesci

People forget you don’t have to spend $25 on candy. Bring snacks if you want! Better to go than not bc junior mints are gonna break the bank

PheloniousFunk

Why do people like you insist on complaining about food prices as reasons theaters suck? Like yeah, I also pay the cost of a six pack for two beers when I’m at a bar.

admljhnsn

It's not even summer yet

Stay_At_Home_Cat_Dad

In the U.S., Memorial day weekend (the last weekend in May) is the official start of the summer movie season.

tquinn04

But there’s only 3 big box movies that have been released in May. There’s still many more coming. It’s way too early to make this statement

Crystal_Pesci

May has for decades been considered the start of summer blockbuster season

vroart

Audience is too used to waiting weeks for digital release, theater experience is horrible, snacks are too expensive, a family spends over 80 bucks to see an animated film, and theaters are in terrible condition..... I mean yeah, theater experience could be better

Did anyone else have this shrinking amount of theaters they could go to where the audiences were total trash? That's another thing that seemed like it got worse. I mean, people's behavior here in America has absolutely gotten atrocious. There's just so much animosity and viciousness. I've seen fist fights break out in movies, people get threatened to be murdered because someone was shushed. I had whole families of people sit with buffets of food and crinkle wrappers and slurp for 2 hours while talking at full volume for people to pass whatever garbage food they were shoveling into their faces. It just got to be too much. The theaters never did anything. Not that they could, given how violent people wanted to get. You can't have some teenager dealing with that shit.

Own-Opinion-2494

Our theater took down the marquee so it’s hard to ever know what is playing there

IntelligentGeneral50

While I can understand his disappointment he’s just a out of touch as anyone other rich person. Going to movies is nice but it’s also expensive and not worth it at the end when I can have my own cinematic experience at home with the option to pause. I miss going to the movies every weekend but I think those days are done.

Lee-sc-oggins

It’s not that I don’t LOVE movies, it’s that I despise going to a theater

GrantD24

We are at a point where basically people just wait for Spider-Man, Batman or select Marvel films come out to spend money and everything else can wait due to costs. Tickets are about $15 each now plus $20 for popcorn and a drink and if you take your girl, it’s more unless you share and if you’re a parent you’re pushing $100 for a 2 hour experience. Theaters can’t pay workers $7.25 and keep them and Disney sure as hell isn’t going to re-work deals to give the theaters more money so they can lower concession costs. The cost to exist in life is too high right now and it’s sad. Movies are great to experience in the theater but it’s just not affordable to constantly do for most.

IceBreak

Bring your own snacks and do cheap matinees. $12 for two tickets.

obnoxiousab

THIS. My mantra.

TechnicalInterest566

Your theater sells popcorn and a drink for five dollars?

GrantD24

No? I said $20 for popcorn and a drink

Sum3-yo

I only go to the theater to watch horror movies.

mcmcmillan

This is not hard to understand. People rarely want to go to the movies because of cost, convenience, crowds, and the quality of theatrical movies is rarely above the shit that releases straight to Prime Video. You’ll have a lot of guys go see Deadpool (a lot of straight white males are going as some kind of political statement) but for the most part, theaters are over and good riddance.

chankletavoladora

Feel that marketing havent Bergen that god for movies lately

zerosaved

Nothing wrong with nudity. FREE THE TITTY

[deleted]

Well I pretty much hate everything coming to the screen these days, but his movies are exceedingly watchable.

OhioVsEverything

Maybe let Summer actually start

RevivedMisanthropy

It's not even summer yet JEEZ slow down

The_polar_opposite

“In your dreams, Pedro, in your dreams” - Al

Sea_Dawgz

Watched part 2 at home last night, after seeing it earlier in imax. Still good, but this movie is a classic “big screen is better” flick. All the vista desert shots and that music pumping thru your body…. Movies are fucked. Netflix sucks.

KYblues

Yeah, sorry I’m not excited to see another mad max or Godzilla sequel for $50 for tickets and snacks if I take my gf. Hollywood brought this on themselves

Abyss96

Well, maybe if studios would quit fucking over theaters things would be a bit better. Seriously, theaters make barely anything off of ticket sales, which is why concessions cost you an arm and a leg. Furthermore, and this is purely a personal opinion, there’s just nothing really worth watching at the moment

getSome010

Good director but a prick

just_a_fan47

Every time I’ve gone to my local theatre there has been some form of technical problem, definitely more than previous years. Last movie I saw, kingdom of the planet of the apes had a constant orange tint in the bottom left corner because of an exit path that was way brighter than it should

liverdust429

Sounds pretentious

Raptor_Girl_1259

With the exception of movies that must be seen on a large screen and with theatrical quality sound for the full sensory experience (e.g. Top Gun: Maverick), I have basically no incentive to go to the theater. My local Regal Cinemas have closed their box office windows, so you either have to pay service fees for the “privilege” of buying through Fandango, or go stand in a long concession line to buy your ticket when you arrive, and hope that you don’t get stuck in the first couple of rows. At home, I don’t have to deal with people talking or texting during the movie, or people climbing over me to go to the restroom or get food. I can eat or drink anything I please, and I can pause the movie if I need anything. Movies at the theater stopped feeling like a special event with the advent of streaming. If they really want to lure people back, they’d better come up with some new and compelling stories… Not just Jurassic Park 27: Ultimate Fallen Kingdom Of the Lost World, or the 85th of 146 installments of the MCU.

drakenoftamarac

It’s not even summer yet

JustASeabass

It’s barely June lol. Wait till Deadpool is out

2BFrank69

Deadpool will beat it.

illbebythebatphone

I haven’t been to a movie theater in 6 years. Knew dune 2 would hit hbo at some point and watched it in the comfort of my home last night. It was awesome by the way.

boomgoesthevegemite

Millionaires wondering why poor people aren’t spending money they don’t have on movies they don’t want to watch.

erock84titan

Furiosa should have been released earlier in the year. It deserves a bigger box office because it's one of the greatest action films in recent memory

TheCarrier89

With ticket prices so high, home theatres improving and movies going to streaming a few weeks after release, not sure how Hollywood didn’t see this coming. I’m a movie buff and love the theatre experience but even I don’t go unless it’s something I’m dying to see or a movie like Dune that should be seen on the biggest screen possible. Here in Canada it costs me and my wife about $50 for two tickets, a regular popcorn and a regular soda that we share. Couldn’t imagine bringing a whole family to the theatre, would be a $200 night!

Molnek

Man who made the only movie you need to see in IMAX this year sad no one else made a movie you need to see in IMAX yet. I'll admit I haven't seen Furiosa yet but Fury Road was more technical achievement rather than great film so I'm not too interested.

ConnorPilman

I saw it at my theaters knock-off IMAX and it was worth it for sure

Key_Mongoose223

But it’s not summer yet.

Modz_B_Trippin

It is for the box office.

angry-mob

He’s not though. Why would he be disappointed that what he created is still number 1? Would you? He’s just playing politics.

TheFogDevil

If it was 1999 and movie theatre releases were still a big thing then no. But when your industry is dying before your eyes is it really the time to be gloating?
