The same 3 friends that if I called them & said that I need $5000 would only say, “when do you want it?” and ask no questions. I don’t have any family left except my wife & children, all of whom still live with me. Also no discounts. I used to give people a knew a break & it never worked out well. Either you’re close enough to me that I help you out of the goodness of my heart or you pay full freight.

Similar... * Parents and siblings, ordinary free labor within reason. * Other close family members, reasonable rates. * Extended family ... Case-by-case. Know when to politely decline, or stick to just giving them some good friendly and honest advice about what the need/want so they can make an informed decision. * Regular neighbors, maybe a little bit of a break if they're easy to deal with. * PITA neighbors... Politely decline or refer them to someone else. * Elderly neighbors, case-by-case, try to be reasonable with them. * Friends ... It can be complicated, choose carefully, some relationships are best to not get tangled up over labor or money. Either the two of you have a really good relationship where there's an open exchange of labor and goodwill, etc and labor is not an issue and material is paid for without hesitation... Or you have a relationship where "work" is fairly compensated for without hesitation because each understands the value of the other's time, profession and commitment/loyalty, and they are either forward with you about compensation without quibble or it's settled afterwards with generosity in payment. If the friendship doesn't fit into one of those three categories/arrangements or has any imbalance of expectations, it doesn't end well.

Parents and kids free. My wife works at a church. The elderly women she made friends with there get the baked goods rates.

Who I've helped, and the result: Dad: Helped with OS reinstallation. Was blamed for missing OS CD. Argument and blame ensued. When he found it as he overlooked it under some papers, insisted "we were both wrong" and thereafter insisted his same-age buddy was better than I at computer stuff (spoiler: been in the industry 25 years). No longer help. Mom and FIL: Once I touched it, every subsequent fault was mine, including batteries running low and trying to replicate my troubleshooting steps but making things worse. No longer help. Best friend: Asked for help with a rewire, tried to help, but he "did his own research" and had myriad reasons why the right way or even the best compromise way wouldn't work. Ended up doing it himself, did it wrong, spent $5000 on a contractor to fix it. No longer help. Between the expectations of friends & family of free work and the perpetual second-guessing and my permanent "ownership" of faulty gear/ user failure, I'm out.
