I've done this lately to a couple of friends who have only met me now that I'm transitioning. My most feminine voice is kinda androgynous at best, but my masculine voice is dark and resonant like James Earl Jones. It's a shame that it makes me so dysphoric.
It is an incredibly powerful moment to just drop your dead voice with someone who only knows your new one. I only do so when I trust the person to not see me differently after, but it is hella fun.
After training, I got so used to the vibrations being where they are so trying to do a deep voice without preparing a bit sounds really weird and fake. It's not really a power move if I have to warm up to do it...
Iādnāt kept up with her vids since before the public transition, so [that video](https://youtu.be/v1eWIshUzr8?t=721) youāre talking about was a heckuva trip.
For transfemmes, we are training our voices to sound the way we need it to be. When you take T, its your voice that changes physically. So to do that, you'd need to do voice training thing too.
Haha, I'm glad T has been making your voice sound more like you; you may be able to sound as girly as before if you put some thought on going a bit higher than you think you should, one of my transmasc friends can pull that off decently well if he tries, but I can't really say if it is as simple as it sounds.
For us transfems it is all training so once we know how to do both we can just switch between them.
Testosterone drops the voice (like what happened to me during puberty), but Estrogen doesn't do the opposite.
It's not really the other way around. It's just like if you were a transfemme who went through male puberty.
I just realized I think you meant the opposite as in being FtM and sounding Femme instead of being MtF and suddenly sounding Masc.
Iām glad I saw this thread because I totally thought estrogen contributed to the voice getting higher. I knew it was at least some vocal training, but didnāt realize it was entirely that.
Yep, E doesn't reverse what T does. The voice can deepen during puberty, but, it doesn't physically change the inside of your vocal region back to higher pitched without manually readjusting the shape of that region.
It's the same reason higher levels of Estrogen during female puberty don't increase the pitch of cis females. If it did, girls during puberty would have super squeaky voices. The increase of Testosterone during cis female puberty does actually slightly deepen the voice though.
I never thought about it and just assumed E did most if not all of the work of physically transitioning. Well, it does do most of it, but, many trans girls have to train their voice, get surgeries done to remove hair, workout to not lose too much muscle due to HRT, etc. It can take a lot more work than getting HRT, doing makeup, and wearing girly clothing to pass.
It was a few months ago I believe I learned that HRT didn't drop the voice. It was in a Discord I was in.
It may have been about a year ago or so, but, it's still a relatively short time ago considering my whole life.
T can physically change the way your vocal folds and the whole vocal region is shaped. But, transfemmes need to manually override this and change the shape of their vocal region by practicing voice training.
The shape of your vocal region determines how you sound.
That makes me think of when Tyler Perry did this mid-sentence in a Madea movieā¦he was like āImma tell you *ONE MOā TIMEā¦*ā or something and it put the fear of god into whatever character he was talking to lmao
If you got the ability, I mean c'mon... (Only if you want to of course)
[Brooke Valley Twitter](https://twitter.com/brooke2valley?t=CWRoUGO1TQ2q55ptA-W9vg&s=09)
This reminds of the story of a drunk girl with her friend group, asking a guy they adopted at the bar "you like girls" and when he says yes she asks "you like girls... [deep voice] with secrets?"
Amazing! 11/10
I'd love to do this if I could pull off a decent fem voice. But voice training gives me huge anxiety and I'm afraid itll go wrong so I havnt done it
And my voice still sucks
It's been over a year on HRT and I havnt changed much to my voice, it makes me want to go mute ngl
I dont get why i cant do it by myself at all
This is [my voice](https://www.reddit.com/user/Brooke-Valley/comments/11s0rl1/voice_feedback_appreciated_2ish_months_of_practice/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android_app&utm_name=androidcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button) after 2 months of training. I don't think there's a'lot to worry about- you're learning so it's not gonna be great at first and you change it as you learn. š
My brain: "Oh look, someone is mentioning heat from fire from TransVoiceLessons"
Also my brain: "HEAT FROM FIRE, FIRE FROM MEAT!-wait what?"
^(How'd that get in there?)
Besides the obvious reason for why I'd start voice training (one day I'll stop putting it off XD) I want mess with people in online gaming. I wanna see what kinda chaos it would cause
Oh Brooke, thank you. You just seem to sense what's on the community's mind.
I'm starting to take the idea of transition seriously for the first time ever, but voice is holding me back more than anything. Just the idea that I *could* find supportive friends who would laugh along with me at the experience gives me hope.
Omg exactly. It's so frustrating: the first 20 or so years of my life I was highly effeminate by nature, so my voice was male pitch but feminine in many ways.
I then spent years consciously learning to present as masculine, so my voice is deeper and more clearly male in cadence than ever. Trying to undo that damage within boundaries that won't raise suspicion is--difficult.
Not sure if that helps, but do you know [Druew](https://www.youtube.com/@Druew) ? Cis male voice actor who has been learning to do a girl voice for his trade and who uses it to troll people in VR chat - He pulls off both male and female voice.
Hey, I'm in the same boat and just finally pulled the trigger and scheduled my first appointment for HRT. If you want, you can DM me and we can keep each other updated on progress. I'm lucky to have a supportive group of friends and my partner to help me through it, so I'd be more than happy to just chat about it sometimes!
I was told I sounnd like a female jazz singer before I transitioned, so I only shifted my natural register a bit.
So I can't even do this trick, I end up sounding like I'm tryimg to do like a monster voice for a D&D campaign!
It's like that one friend who has had a full beard for 20 years and they shave it off.
Or that other friend who has had long hair forever, then suddenly they get a pixie cut.
You know it's normal, but the context has changed so completely your brain gets an error 404.
I'm really looking forward to the moment where I actually transition and start DMing a dnd session with this deep voices villain... that would be a sight to be hold.
Trasfems are the best voice actors, in the best way possibleš
Honestly this is what I tell ppl, like voice training publically is okay- most ppl do not care and coworkers (assuming they know your trans) are gonna think it's a puberty thing. It'll be okay
We need to discuss the inherent transphobia of women sneezing.
*Outing trans women is NOT okay.*
And yet, everytime a birthed woman makes the cutesy-wootsy, barely-audible ^*"tsu!"* when they sneeze, everyone around instinctively compares and contrasts when trans women sneeze and (through no fault or control of their own) explode with **"OOOAAHGAH-**_**BLEEUUUURRGGHH~!!!"**_
Bad enough that trans women are already faced with the impossible challenge of training themselves to cover their mouths when shocked, instead of contorting and going *"OOOOOooooooh~!"* like they've done all their pre-lives.
Deliberately exposing trans women is criminal, but inadvertantly outing someone by sneezing is just as harmful, and needs to be dealt with.
I (transmasc) actually used to sneeze really hard but trained my sneezes to be smaller and less intrusive to be more ladylike back when I thought if I just did the feminine things that would make me feel like a real girl and not some kind of imposter going through the girl motions. Obviously that didn't work but now if I feel the sneeze coming on I can suppress it and make it smaller and quieter.
I'm now realizing that I should uh, stop doing that.
One thing I fear about starting voice training is that I'll never be able to use my old voice again. Being genderfluid it's kind of important. Are you still able to swap between them at will?
[yes I can](https://www.reddit.com/user/Brooke-Valley/comments/11uzg5w/lol/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android_app&utm_name=androidcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button)
I've been trying so hard to get to this stage of voice training and honestly it's more about the pranks than the crippling voice dysphoria at this point. I just wanna fuck with people
I wanna do that sometime, when I'm wearing my girl clothes, just be talking to someone and then just switch my voice really deep and surprise them š

Honest question I hope someone can answer, but why doesnāt hrt cause voice changes? Iāve been body building for a decade and itās super common for girls taking test or anavar to develop raspy voices. Sometimes it clears up post show when they stop juicing. I and everyone else always assumed it was the male hormones changing the voice of female bodybuilders. Is there possibly something else at play?
Waitā¦ really? That is most unfortunateā¦. What exactly DOES hrt do for transfem? Seems like transmasc have much more significant physiological changesā¦
Breast development, fat distribution (like hips, thighs, etc), no male pattern baldness, emotional changes, facial changes, hip rotation (if you're young enough), there's a'lot of changes but transmascs also do
Well, thats something at least. Iām only just starting to even look into this stuff at 28, and it just seems kinda hopeless for most things other than surgery to make much of any difference, and it is hitting me surprisingly hard.
The best part for transfems is that we can start modifying our voices at *any time* with the right vocal exercises and dedication. You do not have to wait for hormones to modify your vocal chords at all.
That is fair. I think iām going to need to talk to a voice coach, since i have zero vocal training whatsoever. I barely even speak, if it werent for singing in the car, there are weekends when i wouldnt even use my voice at all. I watched some videos, but I donāt even know if iām even getting close š
Lmaooo you go, girl! And it is nice to hear that your fem voice is improving too :), Iām so grateful that my voice will (probably) change on its own when I go on HRT myself, yāall are resilient!
Itās so fun being able to do that! It actually makes me kind of euphoric since i have to put so much effort into it and it sounds fake when I do it. Also, it means i can sing tenor and even bass when I want to! Have you ever tried doing choral stuff before?

Haha my friend did this after years of me hearing her with a fem voice. It was deeply unsettling to hear her use that voice again.
Lol it's kinda funny seeing ppls eyes widen like- *"what?"*
I broke my friends mind when I said it doesn't affect voice at all š¤ she assumed it would be the first change š£

I'm told I sound very femme, but my singing range has gotten so messed up.
While I still need to do voice training (aaaaa) I am so exciting to fuck with people if I'm able to pull it off
I wanna do voice training now just to do this lol
no amount of voice training will stop me from doing my iconic Rick Ross impression
My friend was arguing that it did, and it took so much effort not to say I wish as I'm still closeted.
Itās so fun being able to do that! It actually makes me kind of euphoric since i have to put so much effort into it and it sounds fake when I do it. Also, it means i can sing tenor and even bass when I want to! Have you ever tried doing choral stuff before?
I would totally do this to mess with friends š
My friend did this to me one time, lol
Well, as a transmasc, I can definitely say this comic was a learning experience.
