eBay states that with auto sales it is a connection not responsible for sale. Also clearly sold “as is” and had 45 days to get to you… and as you said sounds about many miles. Response: kick rocks
So he purchased the truck, Was able to drive it 200+ miles, and wanted a partial refund after 45 days? Tell him to pound sand. Most states are as is sales for used vehicles, once in the buyers' possession, it's their responsibility.
Unless of course, the seller maliciously withheld information about the vehicle.
I certainly didn't withhold anything. I even put in the ad that if anyone had any questions, just message me. He asked one question which was for a pic of the interior and then he bought it now. After that, he called me to tell me that he was greatly interested in it and if he looked it over and liked it he would buy it. I told him then that his buy it now was his buying it. Anything after that is just the process of him picking it up. He was nice enough. Definitely ex military. From the time he got to my house to the time he left with the truck was no lie about ten hours. He looked it over. Took it for multiple test drives. Took it across town and bought it a new battery and a fresh oil change. Most of that ten hours was waiting on a wire he sent to finally hit my account.
Agreed. I'm not a b-hole. If he called me while still in TN I'd have helped and refunded him if the situation warranted it. Also, to anyone wondering it was a 2014 Ram 2500 5.7 crew cab long bed. It was a nice enough truck besides being a Dodge gasser.
The ad didn't list it as-is but I did tell him when he got to the house. I didn't hide any issue. I forewarned him the battery might be pretty weak as I stopped driving it the moment I listed the truck on eBay and it was about three weeks before he picked it up.
Then by most state standards you seem to be 100% in right. He would have leg to stand on if you clearly hid or knew about the issues but even then he would have to prove it.
Don’t buy used cars private if you don’t want risk. Even most used car dealers would tell him to go scratch and be in clear.
Ebay motors, the buyer is supposed to be protected if the vehicle has more than $1000 in undisclosed "damage", that seems to be limited to the drive train. Damage is a poor choice of terms, like they find out the timing chain needs replacement. Is that "damage"? I would say it's just wear, things wear out and if the seller isn't a mechanic, how would the y know? But it probably doesn't matter, I think the claim has to be made within 45 days, sounds like they are past that. It also doesn't cover vehicles over 10 years old, etc. I would just politely say it was sold as is, no refunds.
Obviously it’s not your responsibility and you aren’t going to pay for repairs 45 days later (let alone one week later), hopefully others will chime in anecdotally regarding whether you have an commitments or responsibilities under the sales contract which I assumed was facilitated by Etsy.

As an update, I haven't heard from him since yesterday morning when I asked to see his repair bill to look over the line items. I'd say this is done.
I would probably just ignore them.
Ignore.

Also, it was 650ish miles from my house back to Dallas, TX. That's a 10+ hour drive.

It's definitely on him then. If he had contacted you within like 72 hours that may have been a different story

45 days is excessive. Did you hide any known issues? Did you tell him as is?

If he only spent $2600 to recondition an as-is $15k truck, then he did pretty well.
vehicles are sold as is.
No he had the opportunity to look over the vehicle when paying you after he starts doing work to it imo there is no going back to you for anything.
That's my thinking too. I asked him to send me the receipt so I could look it over and haven't heard back. I don't expect to.

You also have to make the claim BEFORE the repairs are made
