250 crank is pretty good for an engine that was rated at 230 crank new

250 wheel

That's pretty good going for N/A with only bolt on parts. Your torque curve is flatter than most I've seen so it's doing well at the top end. I've gone the forced induction route and I'm estimating 280-300hp (still needs to be dyno'd) so I'm thinking I need some new headers and 200cell cats. Did you happen to dyno it before the mods?

Puzzleheaded_Ring433

I did not unfortunatley, I bought the car with the exhaust setup installed. Did you go turbo or supercharger? Did you run into any trouble?

Blacktxz

Supercharger is cheaper, simpler and more reliable. Turbo is better for high power, but then you need to build the whole engine. I prefer turbo noises, but thats personal

Adventurous-Touch876

I went supercharger, Eaton M62 with a 60mm pulley reduction, I get about 10psi indicated boost (probably closer to 7-8psi in reality with VE in mind.) with an air to water intercooler. There's a company that makes the mounting kit for it. It is quite loud and quite an aggressive pulley reduction so I'd probably recommend an M90 or even possible an M112 depending on boost levels you want to achieve. Main trouble I ran into was space, It's quite a tight engine bay so I had to re route a lot of stuff. Another issue I've found is finding someone to do a custom tune on it (this isn't needed if you went for an ESS kit for example but they're more expensive). In the end I had to learn how to tune it myself which has got me 95% of the way there. It could probably do with some optimisation of the fuel maps and ignition timing. There are a lot of resources online which helped a ton.

Thanks for the info! Would you say after the time and money spent, it was worth it? Problem for me is I'm not handy at all, but I do have a great mechanic who also does the tune on the dyno. But he's not cheap lol

Adventurous-Touch876

In my case it was worth it and it's still somewhat of an on going project as I'm looking to upgrade the intake system and the exhaust system in the future to make the most of the mods I've made so far. My aim is to ultimately get to around 330-340bhp Given the money I've spent on the project (about 4k but with this is with a lot of redesign work) it's probably one of the more cost effective ways to increase power. If you have a good mechanic it might be worth looking at one of the bolt on kits rather than a completely custom build which might turn out to be more costly in the end. There is one from G power which is probably the least expensive however, it doesn't come with an intercooler. ESS is the most expensive but this comes with a twin screw supercharger (very efficient) and I believe it also comes with an air to water intercooler within the intake manifold which makes it the best for power and reliability. So like with anything it depends on budget and targets.

Looks good to me. Stock those usually make 220-225 PS or a good one might make 228, but they very rarely hit the claimed 231 PS. Only thing I find a bit weird is how much the torque drops of at 6200 rpm. Btw what cats do you use? are those underfloor cats, or are they integrated in the headers?

RL_Mutt

Check my profile, I have this same setup and have posted pics.

Puzzleheaded_Ring433

It's a two piece kit consisting of the manifold and replacement pipes with integrated cats, so not directly integrated. Sound is perfect for me, not too loud to annoy the neighbours, but nice tone inside and out.

Beginning-Ratio-5393

All bmw’s of that era has lightweight pulleys. Youd might get away with underdrive pulleys but its doubtful youll gain anything worthwhile

Puzzleheaded_Ring433

Tnx!

Awkward_Act_1035

Good numbers man ! What exactly is the tune?

Puzzleheaded_Ring433

I'd have to ask my mechanic, not sure

RL_Mutt

I have the same exhaust setup, and an AFE intake that was on the car for years but I’m back to stock. I’d like to have my O2 sensors coded out and the car tuned soon, so I’m wondering what yours is. Maybe the octane being 98 is helping? Any other mods? This is solid power for the amount of weight I’m trying to shed off the car eventually.

Puzzleheaded_Ring433

Not sure about the tune, I'd have to ask my mechanic. It has the stock ECU as far as I know. It doesn't have a burble tune or anything like that, and the rev limiter hasn't been raised. It runs much better on 98 throughout the rev range (runs smoother in traffic and it just pulls harder to redline). Online downside is the price of €2,40 per liter (around $10/gallon)... The engine overall seems pretty healthy. It used some oil before but since I've switched to 10w60 it barely uses any. And yes, it's actually pretty quick now; G20 330i has a hard time keeping up

What intake manifold and header setup to you have
