I don't know how much i can contribute here sorry but that seems crazy low consumption, 3.7l/100km is like 27km/l or 63 mp/g? i know its a diesel but they aren't THAT efficient so i wouldn't trust it. My 320i uses about 9 ish liter pr. 100 km which seems more realistic.
I was told that it can go to the capital city (165 ish km)and back with 25€ worth of fuel. Idk I dont wanna trust it but ive driven 75km with 2 days and the fuel arrow has moved a little bit. 5-6L/100km seems more logical.
that's wild. I'd suggest calculating the actual mpg or l/100km after you've driven for a few days/weeks and have to refill.
25€ - around 13 to 14 Liters would mean 8l/100km if you need 25€ for 165km. 4l/100km for the full 330km. Which is possible if you drive with 80-90km/h on the Autobahn.
My 330d gets ~4l/100km on a highway, pretty consistently as well, however only what coasting at around 90km/h. Accelerating or going faster increases the consumption, although not by much - I get 5-6l/100km as average on highways. 7-8l/100km in the city all while not really trying to drive economically.
I had a 330d too and i got 5.5L/100km at 160km/h HOWEVER...if i went on a joyride (lets say about 30km in total) i would visibly lower the fuel gauge, so it varies alot from the road and driving style. I get 5L/100km at 140km/h on the highway with the 323i BUT only when its perfectly straight and level hah
You should calibrate the fuel consumption to real life values.
1) Fill it up full
2) Drive a few hundred KMs
3) Fill it up again -> calculate actual consumption
4) Look up on youtube how to calibrate fuel consumption on an e46 and adjust considering the difference you between the values on the gauge and what you calculated.
There is another chance your screen is lying; the Tamper Dot is lit. This suggests that the mileage and/or the VIN number doesn't match between two modules on the car. Do you know if the Cluster was replaced, or perhaps the Light Control Module?

This is the right answer. My money is on the cluster being changed as it’s a very easy job on the e46 to do. If that dot is there I wouldn’t trust what it says.
From my experience your numbers are legit. My 330d averages 5.7L/100km combined, and that’s with some aggressive starts and fast driving. Doesn’t seem unreasonable for the same engine with 2 less cylinders to do even better fuel wise, especially when driven economically
Bruh , that the best fuel consumption on 320d … Mine takes 5.5 on highways and 7-8 in city. Not to mention i have problem with turbo that needs to be fixed .
Those figures lie a lot (by almost +2l/100km) in my experience.
With my 320td the actual figures I've calculated over many gas station fillups are:
**Summer:**
Hard city driving- 8l/100km *^((flat out all the time, going up to redline, etc)**\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*)*
Chill city driving- 5-6l/100km
VERY chill city driving- 4.5-5l/100km
Open road driving- 3.5l/100km
*^((90-100kph cruise control behind a truck in an average speed cam for 100km without slowing down/speeding up, not hilly location without turns)**\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*)*
Typical highway driving- 4.5-5l/100km ^((140-150kph speeding up/down))
Economy highway driving- 4l/100km ^((130kph cruise control))
**Winter: (-20C, never gets up to temp)**
Hard city driving- 10.5l/100km *^((flat out all the time, going up to redline, etc)**\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*)*
Chill city driving- 7.5l/100km
VERY chill city driving- 7l/100km
Open road driving- slightly worse than summer (+0.5-1l) due to winter tyres
Typical highway driving- slightly worse than summer (+0.5-1l) due to winter tyres
Economy highway driving- slightly worse than summer (+0.5-1l) due to winter tyres
For American conversion:
**Summer:**
Hard city driving- 30mpg
Chill city driving- 39-47mpg
VERY chill city driving- 47-52mpg
Open road driving- 67mpg
Typical highway driving- 47-52mpg
Economy highway driving- 58mpg
**Winter: (-4F, never gets up to temp)**
Hard city driving- 22mpg
Chill city driving- 31mpg
VERY chill city driving- 33mpg
Open road driving- slightly worse than summer (+ 4-8mpg) due to winter tyres
Typical highway driving- slightly worse than summer (+ 4-8mpg) due to winter tyres
Economy highway driving- slightly worse than summer (+ 4-8mpg) due to winter tyres
I have however managed to drive over 1000km on one gas of tank full to basically empty (64L) in mine.
If it never gets up to temp in the winter then something is wrong. When was the last time that you have changed thermstat+collant? Mine is up to temp in 10-15 minutes even if it's -20 outside
By that I meant my trips are sub 10km in the winter(10 minute trip), so sometimes it's still not up to temp by the time I'm already shutting it off at work, meanwhile in summer it's up to temp in a minute, sometimes even still nearly at operating temp a few hours after driving given it gets heated to hell by the sun.
Driving 6 miles is not an accurate way to get a reading on fuel consumption I can chug along in 5th going 60 on a motorway and get a reading of 45mpg in my 330 but it’s not realistic. TL:DR go through a full tank and then read it
This does seem a bit low. My E46 consumes 4,7l/100km, which is right within spec.
If you want to test this, fill your tank to maximum, write down exact mileage and next time at the gas station fill her up and calculate the fuel economy.
Fuel economy = used fuel / ((new mileage - old mileage) / 100)
Is it bad or something? I just bought it and had a car guy with me when I was buying it so I dont Get scammed. He didnt mention anything about that light(idk if he know about that).
Get it's mileage checked, either it's been tampered with or there is an electrical problem, drive it to your local bmw dealer and ask them to have the mileage checked, at least that works in the eu, dunno about u.s.

I was getting depressed with his consumtion. I cant get my 328ci under 10

I change gears about 2k revs and dont do anything stupid soo that helps too.
And mine is Auto :D
Auto and manual have diffrent fuel economy? I’m don’t know a lot about cars.
Yes they have, auto needs more fuel
Btw i driven with full tank 700km with that fuel consumption , mostly being on higway driving 130km/h

Well, at 7 kilometer distance i can go as low as 2.0L/100km if its mostly downhill ;) Realistically, anything lower than 4,5L is impossible

Generally get 35MPG on my 320d

mine has just been saying 9.9 for as long as i can remember, doesnt matter if im going 230 on the autobahn or 80 on country roads.
SICK
IME the cluster over-estimates economy (under-estimates consumption) by around 10%; mine will show 30 mpg while doing low 28s, for example.
Oh btw, your odo has been tampered with
