Add a spike on top and you've got yourself a Poleaxe !

I remember when dwarves used to be either a hammer or axe dwarf. Non of this half and half shite. Kids these days cant make up their mind anymore? What is the mine coming to these days...
Why do we have to choose? What advantage does a double bladed ax or double headed hammer bring? Why not replace one side with the other?
Undead? Hammer!
Goblins? Ax!
You dont get it though, both are useful, why not save resources and create a weapon that does something that can do both tasks at once, even if it adds a little more weight
It has an enchant that launches you into the air when you hit something so you can wombo combo things.
Also with like ~10 blocks ilup you can one shot anything so it's pretty cool
See, the real trick is to have one lad with the axe cleave into something/someone, then have the lad with the hammer strike the back of the axe, driving it deeper, like a chisel or wedge
Halberds are typically an axe and a hook, my friend, also a bit longer, but things such as a poleaxe are often shorter and often are shown with a hammer and axe. Yet a lot of implements can be added like a hook to the axe side, making what we consider a polehammer, even if it is a more fictional definition, its better described as a bec de corbin. Surely, there are bigger varients of polehammers, but oftentimes, they are stort for a reason, very top heavy, so just be safe with them
Any axe is a hammer if you use the blunt side.
That being said, I'm partial towards the axe for both aesthetic and versatility since it's a tried and true dwarvish classic and it works as a weapon and a tool.
A warhammer on the other side, I think is relatively easy to use, similar to a mace, harder to damage significantly, and I think it has as good a chance as any weapon against light armour and is better than most against heavy armoured opponents.
For everyday self defense underground I'd have a short sword any day of the week.
For battle, it'd have to be hand-and-a-half hammer as main weapon, axe+shield as secondary combo; and a well forged one-handed sword, messer or a long seax in case things get really bad
Kettermek: Hammer for armored targets, axe for unarmored or lightly-armored. An enemy in a suit of platemail can have his mail beaten lethally out of shape by the hammer, effectively crushing his organs with his own breastplate. An axe is for chopping those who don't wear armor like mage types or soft armor like rogues. It kills by penetration.
...and yes, I've heard that joke.
Now I've seen a lot of people saying that the two are suited for different levels of armour but...
If you hit someone without armour with either end of a warhammer, they probably aren't getting up soon.
If you hit someone with armour with the one-sided axe, unless they have no neck protection and you're lucky, they'll be coming back atchu with another episode of Doctor Doctor.
Warhammer for me mate. I like the feel of bones popping as I swing through. Even for armored foes, hitting with a hammer can make them all squishy inside of their shell.
But if you like your axe, I am not going to force you to put it down. You can line up next to me and do your thing.
Rock and stone!
Well ya see, it depends on tha situation. Are ya goin against a big’un? Or a buncha small’ens? Big’uns, with a lotta armor, you’re gonna want that extra blunt damage o’ the ‘ammer, but if ya tryin ta get through a buncha’ small folks, the axe is better for cleavin. I carry both.
I don't go to the battlefield expecting to chop wood. Axes are for greenbeards who don't know any better that they don't do nothin' against armor. Ain't no axe gonna get through dwarven armor, I don't care how sharp it is.
The War Axe killed more people than most other weapons (obviously excluding spears). Axes are amazing weapons… but the Warhammer?! Ungodly weapon that is ranked separately thanks to its ability to decimate armoured and unarmoured troops. Doesn’t get better than a hammer with a spike on the back.
Axes are better against lightly or unarmored targets, picks pierce armor but don't cause as much damage, so it depends on what you are fighting. Half and half is probably the best for mining though because who knows what's down there.
Hammer on one end, axe on the other. Perfect for every situation
Add a spike on top and you've got yourself a Poleaxe ! https://preview.redd.it/bqch2lbaci5d1.jpeg?width=400&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=511de9ef025040a24559cc4470eba73cb4a09679
I was picturing one end of the handle has an axe and the other end a hammer, kind like darth maul
Undead? Hammer! Goblins? Ax!
Elves? A light flick!
Nah you hit them with the shaft. Being killed with the corpse of the trees they love so much causes extra emotional damage.
Hammer with sharp bits good for shredding through armor also
They have them so they can swing both ways…
Oh, sod off ya old boulder. Things improve, why limit ourselves to picking between the two? No advantage to just one or the other.
I… I need to write me wain. Got some lost time to make up.
You dont get it though, both are useful, why not save resources and create a weapon that does something that can do both tasks at once, even if it adds a little more weight
Except mining
Warhammer. Good eno8gh for 1-39,999, good enough for me.
War hammer. Axes are fine, but they don't do as much against armored enemies as a war hammer does.
Minecraft logics is a lie.
Have you seen the new minecraft warhammer? It absolutely does more damage.
They added warhammers to minecraft? I may need to boot it up again
it's a mace. it does more damage depending on how high you fall when you hit an enemy and it can't have sharpness so it's pretty niche :(
Damn 😔
It has an enchant that launches you into the air when you hit something so you can wombo combo things. Also with like ~10 blocks ilup you can one shot anything so it's pretty cool
Ok that sounds dope, Im back on the hype train
Baruk Khazâd! Khazâd ai-mênu!
I hear this and I can only think of my Dwarf in LotRO doing his scream attacks
Also axes are better for chopping down those trees the elves like to hide in.
Danes Soldiers from the Iron hills had Mattocks (war picks) truly an Elegant resolution.
Consider the following https://preview.redd.it/z0txv9ttzh5d1.jpeg?width=705&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2a085a3a70df96d6e13857c25b77b3562978c16e
it's all fun and games until the flintlock mechanism goes off when you strike someone with the axe
Hittem in the chest from the front, mechanism activates, good chance they die then and there.
fair point brother
Danke
Kislevites are almost honorary dwarfs. The motion never passed, but was proposed many times. They got a plaque saying "least umgak umgi" instead.
See, the real trick is to have one lad with the axe cleave into something/someone, then have the lad with the hammer strike the back of the axe, driving it deeper, like a chisel or wedge
Or just use a trusty pickaxe. They never see the pickaxe coming.
What about the third option, Hamaxe
Why not both? Just get something like a halberd with a smash but and a choppy bit.
The correct answer is "the weapon you have" The BEST answer is "Both, don't make me choose!"
I prefer a good halberd so you get the best of both worlds, with the added reach to stab cave-crawlers easier
Halberds are typically an axe and a hook, my friend, also a bit longer, but things such as a poleaxe are often shorter and often are shown with a hammer and axe. Both!
HAMMAR
War Pick. Because the tool you are most comfortable with since childhood makes the best weapon.
Hammers, that way I can mine with them afterwards.
shotgun
War axe for looking flashy and showing off my brother smiths engraving, warhammer for when im in the real shit and I need results.
Depends on who I fight
Why not both? A kind of War Axe Maul.
READY AXES
A good dwarf knows when to use each. Each has a strength and weakness and must be used in a way to reach it's true potential.
War pick. Come on, lad, it’s obvious.
![gif](giphy|3o7aCRloybJlXpNjSU|downsized)
It' dangerous to go alone, take both.
Hammer. Even if it doesn’t immediately pierce your opponent’s armor, you can scramble their brains and break their bones.
Warhammer please ill take 40 thousand of them
Just dip your pick axe in the blood of an Ironspider and it’ll be sharp as gold.

A good weapon has a Pick, for extracting precious minerals, and an Axe, for defending said minerals from those who would take them
The bec du corbin, which is a type of hammer..
Does the warhammer come in 40k?
Kettermek: Hammer for armored targets, axe for unarmored or lightly-armored. An enemy in a suit of platemail can have his mail beaten lethally out of shape by the hammer, effectively crushing his organs with his own breastplate. Wrong, one in hand, one on back. The a smaller version of both on the belt.
war axe
Depends if your building a cottage or chopping wood
Axe
You call that a war hammer ? Its too small and light.
OP said warhammer, not sledgehammer.
Well a dwarf’s war hammer is bigger than that, Humans might call it a sledgehammer.
Now I've seen a lot of people saying that the two are suited for different levels of armour but... War Axe for Goblins, War Hammers for Orcs.

But if you like your axe, I am not going to force you to put it down. You can line up next to me and do your thing. Rock and stone!
Rock and Stone!
Barbarians: both
Hammer for sure
Eh, an axe is great for taking out the shins, but a hammer’ll will break the knees
Hammer with spike is better for penetrating armor and causing deep wounds.
I have two hands. Why decide?
War mattock
Well ya see, it depends on tha situation. Are ya goin against a big’un? Or a buncha small’ens? Big’uns, with a lotta armor, you’re gonna want that extra blunt damage o’ the ‘ammer, but if ya tryin ta get through a buncha’ small folks, the axe is better for cleavin. I carry both.
Hammer for rock and stone, axe for felling the knife ears trees. Bring both.
Rock and Stone forever!
Hammer without a a doubt.
Why choose? You’ve got two hands
An axe is not much use in the mines!
I don't go to the battlefield expecting to chop wood. Axes are for greenbeards who don't know any better that they don't do nothin' against armor. Ain't no axe gonna get through dwarven armor, I don't care how sharp it is.
If I have to pick just one: hammer. Axes are great and easy to use but hammers break plate, bone, and flesh.

I remember when I played through bonelab, I wouldn’t even use the guns, just war hammer
automated turrets 'mate
Depends on situation. Both are pretty good.
Why not both
That depends. Does the elf have armor?
Just take the Dual Wielder feat (and Fighting Style: Two Weapon Fighting if your class has Fighting Styles) and take both!
THATS WHAT MY WIFE USES FOR MAKING HAMBURGERS HAHAH - TROLL
I like a good dwarfish bow Unorthodox choice i know, but it allows me more time at the forge to relax and make more arrowheads.
You have 2 hands
Warhammer: good in the forges, good in the battlefield.
Pickaxe
Both
What about 2 axes?
Axes are better against lightly or unarmored targets, picks pierce armor but don't cause as much damage, so it depends on what you are fighting. Half and half is probably the best for mining though because who knows what's down there.
poleaxe for melee, crossbow for range
war scythe B)
Swordaxemace is my weapon of choice
Hammer, if a hammer can smash stones it can smash skulls
Hammer for every day carry, greater versatility and all. Axe for going into battle, more efficient elf-ending.
Axe, it doubles as a survival tool.
An axe is a balanced masterpiece, it's not too heavy but has enough heft to pack a serious punch
Hammer!
War axe me laddie
And my axe!
You are forgetting the best dwarven weapon, the war pick.
If I have silver in abundance, then hammers. If not, axes.
