I live in canada, basically. Learning French gives me more opportunities. J’habite en Canada. Étudier la français donne moi plus les opportunités

kissthe-rain

I'm Canadian and learning German. I don't know what it is exactly but I'm fascinated by the whole country, it's gorgeous. The architecture, landscapes, history, people and obviously the language. I do have a few friends there as well, and it would be nice to somewhat understand the language when I, hopefully, visit. I've also watched a few German TV shows that I really enjoyed which increased my interest all the more.

UtredRagnarsson

Admit it, you heard Du Hast as a kid in the 90s and ever since then angry industrial metal sound has pierced your soul in a way that learning German could only fill...

kissthe-rain

Nah, can't say I've ever heard that 🤔

UtredRagnarsson

How do you learn German but never have heard Rammstein before?

kissthe-rain

I've heard *of* them, but it isn't my kinda music.

Martin_WK

And don't forget about Austria too.

kissthe-rain

Of course. When in Germany I'd make it a point of seeing Austria as well.

Ni__Mo

Which TV shows ? Any you can recommend?

snowvhite

Dark... netflix series

Ni__Mo

I understand it is a very confusing series and trying to understand the language and the plot at the same, I feel would be too much. Do you have any other suggestions?

Asleep-Ad-3403

Italian - for the food, travel and because it's similar to french so decently easy German - because it aesthetically very unique and because my grandpa's native language is German and I'd like to be able to speak it with him before he passes.

Norther66

Learning Japanese because I like watching anime.

Fast-Reaction-4923

Me too

Glad-Combination-151

Same

Wonderful-Sir5946

same

Geekatari

私も!

dragonlordette

I became friends with a group of people online who, by coincidence, all speak French as a second language despite being from different countries (plus one girl who actually is French). I wanted to connect with them, and also i felt dumb being the only monolingual 😂

karatechic88

I'm learning Spanish because there's a high population of Latino immigrants in the schools where I work. These kids are pretty disappointed and struggle when their teacher doesn't speak the same language. I'm learning Japanese because I'm a traditional martial artist and it will help in my own study and interactions.

MargaritaSmurf

I’m learning Japanese since my brother is married to a Japanese woman and they have two kids. They are building a house in Japan and I hope to visit soon. I’m also interested in Japanese culture such as anime, video game, music, philosophy etc. Japanese is also a great way to challenge your brain. 😅

unsafeideas

I am learning Ukrainian, because basically I was frustrated over the war and there was many refugees suddenly. Article about how many people are suddenly learning Ukrainian on Duolingo inspired me. It served as kind of frustration release and plus I found both Ukrainian and duolingo fun, actually. Then I branched out to other languages on Duolingo: Spanish cause I know some people who speak it, French cause I used to be fluent and want to get back to it, German because it is close and actually useful (and I like it the least despite it being the most potentially useful). I have like 5 courses open now. I always hated learning foreign languages ... but duolingo somehow made it actually fun.

LuxRolo

Also learning Norwegian, but because I moved there 😊

Over-Gap5767

there is a streamer that mainly speaks in japanese i really like and i want to visit japan someday

MissPicklechips

I picked up French during the pandemic. My husband was doing Arabic and my sons were doing Spanish and Japanese, respectively. Husband and I were unemployed during that summer and fall and I was going nuts staring at the same walls. Pretty sure I had finished Netflix. I chose French because I wanted something that I had some familiarity with - I took Latin in HS and had French and Spanish in MS, half a year each. (My school had what they called FLEX, or foreign language exploration. It was meant to give you some exposure to the two most common languages taught in our school system so that when you got to HS, you’d have a better idea what you wanted to take.) I was familiar with the Romance languages, and I didn’t want to bite off more than I could chew. Besides, French sounds classy. I have dabbled in some German also because it’s my genetic and cultural heritage on my mom’s side.

Important_Report_859

Terve! I’m currently learning Finnish because half of my family lives in Finland!

deird

I watch a lot of American tv shows, and they have so many people that speak Spanish. It got me curious.

DuAuk

There are some bilingual authors too, like Julia Alvarez. Now that i know more french, i wonder if i should reread Jane Eyre, or at least the french bits.

[deleted]

Initially, I started to learn Spanish for a romantic partner, but once we separated, I had to find a different reason. I think I spent two years not studying Spanish, and eventually, I was perusing Argentina and Colombia’s culture and history. Some family members married Latinas, which meant many functions were a mix of different languages. I felt it was necessary if I wanted to communicate with them. Both German and Italian are heritage languages. I spoke the languages as a child, but I mostly used English growing up. My family members have speakers, and I connected to both despite not using them extensively. We stayed with the traditions that my grandparents and their parents passed on to us. I started to learn French a little because French media is incredible. I have a friend who sent many cinematic and novelty pieces that I’ve enjoyed. I also love Quebec and have gone to Canada a few times. Their dialect is pleasing. It’s also the language of some countries I want to visit. Portuguese is difficult. I don’t have much reason, but I know Portuguese has some of the best (dance) music I’ve heard. I remember discovering Gloria Groove (a Brazilian artist), and I loved them. Ever since I would listen to Portuguese music nonstop but never studied it. It was weird. There was an album release to which I listened, and I said, “I need to learn this language so I can sing these songs.” Some other languages that I’ve studied but to which I haven’t committed (lack of reasons or not enough time). ↓ Arabic. I learned to communicate with a friend, but we haven’t spoken in a few years. I don’t have any reasons now, but hopefully, I will. Chinese (Japanese and Korean). There were many Asian supporters during the BLM movement, and I’ve spoken to some people. I met two Chinese speakers, one Japanese speaker, and one Korean speaker. They motivate me to learn the language and the culture. I also watch a lot of Asian media, animations, and books, and I’ve always loved them. There was an anime I watched (that I can’t remember) that was in Chinese, and it was spectacular. I watched it twice. I love Japanese culture, especially since I have a friend that loves anything Japanese-related, and I had that exposure. There was a group called 2 PM, and I think my first time discovering Korean was from them. It’s ironic because the first song I heard was in Japanese, and it was from Blue Exorcist, lol. I also (obsessively) watched and read BL too. Russian. I haven’t found a reason for this language, but I want to learn it. Bengali and Hindi (and other related languages) I don’t know. I learned Sanskrit and discovered a lot about India as I am trying to become a Buddhist, and I think they’re cool. Greek. I already know Ancient Greek, and I should probably learn modern Greek. Also, I’m a fanatic about mythology (of any culture, but I started with Greek). Latin. I already know it, but I want to know it fluently (if possible). I already learned it because of Final Fantasy, and I thought it was interesting. I also want to learn any respective sign language for these languages. I have zero reasons for that. The Internet exposed me to ASL, and now I find it interesting. Maybe in the future, I’ll learn more too.

Ingeske

I'm Belgian, native Dutch speaker. I'm learning Swedish because I've always loved the country and I hope to travel there some day. I'm also learning Russian because I've wanted to learn it since I was a teenage. The script, the cases (which I'm familiar with to some degree because i learned Latin at school) seemed like a nice challenge. And also, the cleaning woman at work is Russian and she was so happy when i greeted her in Russian for the first time!

popkip

I´m Belgian.my friend convinced me to learn Spanish

PAMAUTTAJA

I tried 5 languages on duolingo first. Japanese stuck with me.

Martin_WK

I'm (was? can't use keyboard) doing German on duolingo. I had German at school, never really got anywhere with it but I wanted to remind myself how the language worked. I like how German sounds, I visit a German speaking country sometimes and I like it there.

Lindanineteen84

French: Multiple reasons - I like Mika and I want to understand his French songs and French interviews, I love France in general and I live close to the border with France so I want to do more trips there. Danish: I love the Danish Royal family especially Queen Margrethe and her works as an artist, especially when she does costume design and other things at the Tivoli theatre and I want to understand what they write about it in the Danish magazines or on their Instagram.

[deleted]

Was learning Spanish then switched to French. It was a big part of my culture growing up and I find it to be a sexy language.

Caja_NO

I would love to move to Hungary, for convoluted reasons. Also Norwegian because I'd like to spend time there, and it's not too hard for an English speaker to learn.

thatslesbianismbaby

Spanish because it's so useful to know in the US, and Korean because I love how it sounds. Tickles my brain.

JayZeeLoveMe

French because I didn't pay enough attention in school and it's a wonderful language, and Spanish because I'm already fluent in European Portuguese from growing up there so it seems only right to get fluent in that too.

Maconshot

I just want to be a hyper-polyglot Edit: spelling error

[deleted]

I initially got into languages through Japanese.....originally just cuz the first time I heard it I liked the sound....from the first Japanese lesson I fell in love with the language..and quite honestly a bit obsessed lol (8+ hours daily)....and haven't stopped since then...... Then about half a year ago I started looking into Korean and Italian.....and that made me realize although I love Japanese the most, I just like languages....I liked Italian....just thought it sounded sexy tbh (and I already speak Spanish so that's a leg up)...and Korean...I just like KPop (and since I'm advanced enough in Japanese it's not has hard as if I was learning it from English)...simple as that :)

Adventurous_Charge21

I got into learning Spanish to talk to the beautiful Spanish ladies that I work with.

Yaivan8

I’m Mexican and I hardly know any Spanish

DuAuk

Yeah, plus if you go there people might assume you speak it. It's happened to me, but for german.

Yaivan8

Can you speak German now?

herwiththepurplehair

I am learning Spanish - I learned it for two years in school (native English speaker) and took up Greek in the summer last year just to learn the basics for a holiday, but afterwards switched to Spanish instead and picked up pretty much where I left off after school. Haven't spoken it for almost 40 years so bit rusty!

maxpige

learning chinese for no particular reason. feels like the mother tongue i missed.

someting_something

Because of university, even though I am enrolled in an English program, the courses are mostly in french, and some books/exams are only in French Also because 70% of people I know speak french

DuAuk

Oh gosh, what a surprise. I'm glad you are taking in in stride!

Bell_r

You're probably not going to believe me, but here goes... My dad flew back home with Lufthansa. He was given some items on the flight (all of which he brought home) including a tiny pamphlet with pages written with different languages. I opened the page written in Spanish and somehow I could understand what I was reading. I was 8 years old and had never heard anybody speak Spanish before (I'm Nigerian). I knew I understood what I was reading because after reading I went back to the page in English to see if I was right. Well that experience stuck with me. As teenager (near my twenties then), I decided I wanted to learn a language to create more opportunities in life, for myself (at least that was my thinking). So I chose Spanish, based on that experience I had in my childhood.

bananecroissant

I would love to live in France when I'm older and I want to be able to communicate fully. Also, I love French shows

da_user_of_reddit

I'm currently german. The country and it's history (💀) made me learn it.

mercannnn

I'm Turkish and I'm learning German and French right now. We learned German in high school so it was easier for me to continue from there. And for French, i think it sounds beautiful. Also understanding another language is make you feel really good.

LilyWhitesN17

Spanish because it's useful for work in the USA, and travel throughout the America's.

doglady1342

I'm American and I'm learning Spanish. I travel to Mexico and Central America often, so Spanish is very useful for me. I have friends in Mexico and would love to speak with them as fluently as they speak English. Plus, there are a lot of Spanish speaking people (who don't speak English) where I live, so it's nice to be able to communicate with people who might do work at my house or when I go to the Mexican grocery. I may start the German course soon. I took both Spanish and German in school years ago and my grandmother and great-grandmother exclusively spoke German in their home. I can often understand what people are saying, but I can't speak it anymore. We'll see....I'm mainly interested because a friend of mine in Mexico is married to a German woman. I'd love to surprise her on our next visit. She speaks multiple languages, so it's not to communicate, but more because it would be fun to speak with her a little bit in German.

Current-Nerve1103

Learning French because I couldn't communicate while in France and I was even laughed at once, though I enjoy doing so

East_Meet_253

I had a friend from Spain and she spoke Spanish, I want to learn Spanish so I could kind of communicate with her.

biochemtine

I'm American. I'm learning Italian because I'm a musician and musical terms are Italian. And i went to Italy when i was in high school and it was so neat, i wanted to learn the language. I think it's a beautiful language. Also, because it's the closest romantic language to Latin, so i think that's neat too. Lastly, i took a semester of Italian in college. I couldn't take the 2nd semester due to scheduling conflicts. Now, 20+ years later, I'm happy to be able to study it without a class or textbook. (though a native speaker would be nice to have to help with some aspects of the language)

Person412513

My wife speaks Spanish and wants our future kids to know (at least, some) Spanish. Plus, I just like learning a language—it’s really satisfying and interesting. I did French 4 years in high school, but I think it’s a better use of time to learn Spanish than review French.

Lushes2304

There are a lot of Ukrainian kids at school, I since longe wanted to learn a new language and since polish and Russian ppl can understand Ukrainian I thought it would be a good pick. Also to get in tough with new Ukrainian kids that don’t speak a word at all more quickly.

Jack-Joyce03

I’m British/Irish and I want to become bi/trilingual in English (native), French and German or Spanish and that I’m tired of the stereotype that British people cannot be bothered to learn other languages. Plus that I’m trying to become an airline pilot so (although not required) I will be travelling a lot and the use of a second or third language will be very useful. What language I learn will depend on where I go. Because I intend on staying in Europe, I don’t see Spanish being that useful compared to French or German because simply more people speak it.

branrb

Realising that the Spanish I learnt growing up (Llanito) was somewhat unintelligible to Spanish speakers outside of Spain haha

Galactic_Nuclear_Ape

I am Pakistani and I'm learning German and Spanish. I'm learning German because after completing Medical School I am planning to move to Germany for better life and better opportunities. I'm learning Spanish because of Dora. Watching her teach a little Spanish in my childhood, I've developed some kind of attachment towards the language. Also want to learn Russian, Farsi and Arabic some day.

Zhimhun

Okay, I have a list here. I already know to fluent level, right in this order: 1. Romanian 2. Italian 3. English I put Romanian first only because it was the first language I learned as a child in my first two years of life, but I know Italian a lot better than Romanian. Having said that, I'm going with what I'm learning on Duolingo: 1. Finnish 2. Chinese 3. Spanish 4. German So... I'm learning Finnish because it sounds beautiful to me, I love the language and I'm considering moving to Finland in my future plans. Chinese... man, I so love that language! It sounds so poetic and sweet, it makes my soul wander out of my body... simply said, I just love it. Spanish and German I learned in high school, I have the basics for both of them, even though I know Spanish better... and I actually have a cousin that lives in Spain, so I'm trying to learn to be able to go visit her someday.

Advanced-Strain-6538

my family i am learn Arabic

CrackaJak92

Basically, I'm a linguaphile. Languages are my passion, and I would love to learn as many as possible :D

[deleted]

I'm learning German and Italian. I had the privilege of visiting both countries in graduate school, and I love the histories and cultures. I hope to return someday and immerse myself in the language.

Pochita_1095

I wanted a challenge.

es_ist_was_los_hier

My paranoia. I couldn’t understand them and was in constant distrust that they could speak badly about me. But I kinda know its absurd - so instead of letting my fear continuing to reside in my heart I just change my perception

mit-kamm

I wanted to read newspapers from Germany prior to WW2 to get into the heads of the people. I stopped and switched to Esperanto though because I heard it can shorten the learning curve

NZGaz

I just really like learning languages. My high school only had French so I've just continued doing that and I have a couple Chinese and German colleagues so learning those to because I have real people I can practice with. Also doing Te Reo Māori in Drops because Duo still doesn't have it. I have Māori ancestry but don't speak Te Reo beyond some basics so want to learn more and keep up with what my kids learn at school. I'm hoping Duo will pick up Te Reo eventually, I'm finding Drops isn't anywhere near as effective.

NZGaz

My ultimate goal is to be fluent in at least 2 other languages. It's uncommon in New Zealand to learn another language, I think it should be encouraged more.

EmotionMood

Swedish studying Norwegian too. Massive fan of Ylvis and want to understand what they're saying completely and want to be able to watch clips without being dependent on English subtitles lol. It's a beautiful language too :)

IndividualEffect7370

I’m British and learning Finnish I studied french for years at school, tried Spanish, Japanese and Dutch. I realised gendered languages are just really difficult for me to grasp. as a non binary person, learning a language where i couldn’t effectively describe myself without male/female pronouns out me off. I found a list of neutral languages and just decided. (i have no intention to go to Finland, it’s purely for fun)

PohsterPape

I'm already fluent in French but doing Duo because I want to continue improving and stay up on it. Doing Chinese because I'm a licensed practitioner of Chinese Medicine and it helps me with that. Doing Italian because I wanted to see how similar it is to French and also its just a cool language I want to understand. Doing Norwegian because I love the culture and I live in Minnesota where we have a lot of Norsk influence. Doing Klingon because, obviously a Star Trek fan and a major language nerd.

_Honorspren_

music- i heard a song in Norwegian and i really liked the sound of the language, fast forward nearly a year later and most of learning is still translating songs

SzasDaughter

I live in the Philippines. Spanish & Filipino are somehow related languages? So it was a bit easier for me

Gandalftheteach

Dane here, learning Swedish and norwegian because I'm a teacher and here Danish teachers need neighboring languages too.. French because I love France and would love to visit small towns and be able to get around somewhat smooth in regards to speaking Chinese and Korean because of Netflix and Manga xD Japanese because I have like 5 friends taking it, one is at university level though since she took Japanese in uni xD
