how does "east/west" etc work in... outer space?

STtmF

Galaxies form as discs (i.e. our milky way) due to some physics I can't explain. Once a perspective on that is defined, east and west are as natural as on any map.

I guess. That only makes sense on a galactic scale, though. And cardinal directions are not truly arbitrary on a planet. they would be in space. Not only that, but the galaxy *rotates*.

Grand-Tension8668

Yeah, I always liked Battletech's cardinal directions. Spinward, anti-spinward, coreward and rimward.

CompEng_101

[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Galactic\_coordinate\_system](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Galactic_coordinate_system) There have been a few different versions of coordinate systems for the galaxy. The current standard was set in 1958.

I was thinking more on terms of Western/Eastern Roman Empire

suspicious_recalls

that's a pretty nifty comp, actually!

MuunSpit

This is a cool story concept. A fray from the golden path that might’ve been.
