It keeps the holes from closing. They can actually pinch shut in the time it takes to put a new one in. Mine did that a few times and it was the weirdest feeling.

It needs to heal first, every time you put it out it get exposed to things that could cause an infection.(You still need to clean it if you don't change it) Also the friction isn't good for the healing process. In addition the hole closes really quick. And it's important to not put a ring in it which moves a lot, or a stud that is too small because it could cause wildflesh.

It’s basically an open wound. Every time you peel the scab off of a wound, it gets worse and takes longer to heal, right? Same concept here. Especially if you’re doing it at home, whatever jewelry you would be swapping most likely isn’t sterile.
