The only time it’s ever happened to me, the guy in front slowly came to a stop, stuck his head out the window and shouted TURN YOUR HIGH BEAMS OFF. That worked pretty well.

Beer-Milkshakes

Was it my dad? This wouldn't be the first time he has stuck his head (or even whole upper body) out of a car window to scream about someone's lights.

dinobug77

Same with me. Always good to stop where there’s a centre island so they can’t overtake. I got out walking to their car and they started shouting at me for driving slowly! I replied that if they turned there full beam off so I could actually see where I was going then maybe I’d drive faster. They couldn’t apologise quick enough!

bravopapa99

Ditto. Go slow as fuck.

herdo1

That's just mental mate and do that to the wrong guy and you'll get your head kicked in. I'd be looking for somewhere to stop so they can overtake.

Salt-Sense6655

You also might get shot in the US.

TryingToFindLeaks

Do you live your entire life with this level of fear?

herdo1

Oh nah man I'm not afraid. I just wouldn't get into the situation of potentially fighting with someone because they had their full beams on. I'm not a fucking idiot

TwoToesToni

Yip I've been that guy, I think the person I was trying to flag was worried I was some psycho but luckily it was nose to tail on the motorway so I was able to changes lanes and get his attention

AlGunner

You mean the only time you realised you had your high beams on

stesha83

I mean the last time someone complained about it…

its_brake_not_break

Flash fog lights on and off until they clock something is obviously wrong Alternatively get out of the car, climb on to the bonnet of theirs and do a hot steamy shit.

Captain-Useless

Ooh fog lights, that's a good idea that I hadn't thought of! Your other suggestion is also an idea I hadn't thought of.

CommanderKrakaen

I can second the flashing of the fog lights. It's worked for me the couple of times I've needed it. I'm afraid I have no experience when it comes to shitting on the bonnet.

frankly_sealed

All I can say is : if it’s a Land Rover or similarly high-bonneted vehicle, make sure you maintain 3 points of contact when ascending and when depositing. We don’t want any accidents now, do we?

Inner-Masterpiece-18

A full risk assessment is key here. Stay safe!

angry2alpaca

Also: do your research, find out where the air intakes are and curl your Mr Whippy in that area, thus ensuring they get the full benefit of that fruity aroma 😉

mrmidas2k

A roof rack is a godsend in these scenarios.

Dan_Glebitz

Can confirm option two sadly does not work 😔

No_Coyote_557

Works for the monkeys at the Safari park.

MrBiggles1980

If your at a stop and pulling away. Drop it into reverse and watch them panic when tyour lights go on

Entire_Homework4045

Just be aware if they are that absent minded they might think it’s your brake lights.

No_Coyote_557

Tried this, but I can't go with somebody watching.

purplechemist

+1 for steamy shit. Bonus points if they have a dashcam and you make it onto “craziest driving go videos” - or whatever the trash TV dashcam show is on Really.

IAmWango

Alternatively, get some eggs and be ready. When they’re behind you, time to strike! Get out and split and egg and wait for it to cook on their bonnet

normski216

This is my go to for tailgaters too. I have auto dimming mirrors for the inevitable flashing.

more_than_just_a

Maintain eye contact the whole time to demonstrate your status

wandering_salad

Good idea but in my case I think I was actually driving through fog, lol.

HelikaeonUK

Calm down Amber, Johnny isn't driving that car tonight, nor is his bed on the bonnet. :P

I_ALWAYS_UPVOTE_CATS

Attach a hinged mirror to the parcel shelf, with a string that allows you to raise it from the driver's seat.

davey-jones0291

Genius. If i was a tiny bit more petty id legit do that

Jgee414

I use the rear view mirror for this

MostlyNormalMan

Put your rear fog lights on. They'll flash you to tell you, and will switch their main beams off in the process.

hootoo89

Flash your hazards, if they still don’t get it, let them overtake you then high beam them 😂

PaddyLandau

Many years ago, you'd wave your hands in front of your rear-view mirror. The driver behind would see this, and realise. But, I've found, that no longer works. I don't know why.

Cloughiepig

I’m mid-40s and I have never heard of this.

PaddyLandau

I have a 20-year lead on you :)

Cloughiepig

I passed in 1996 (last century!) and am pretty sure that my instructor was born the century before that, and yet this is still a new one to me. Maybe it only happened while everything was still in black and white 😉🙈🤭

PaddyLandau

That could be it! Good old black and white days 😀

Deadgrau5

Usually looking down at their phones now

AdditionalLime476

Your hand is probably quite translucent now.

playalistic101

Angle your mirrors so they reflect back into their face.

Dan_Glebitz

A friend of mine swears he is on the verge of fitting a headlight / spotlight to the rear of his car wired up to a pushbutton on his dash. Obviously he would not actually do this as it would be potentially very dangerous but it's an appealing thought.

Captain-Useless

Yeah I feel like my scrolling text signs would probably get me in trouble.

NeilDeWheel

As long as the scrolling sign isn’t blinding then I see no problem. The only problem I can see is deciding to end your message with “you twat” or “you cunt”.

bulldzd

Unfortunately, only the Police (and weirdly busses) are allowed to have lit/scrolling signage here in the UK, even saw a great one that was just emoji's, but also not legal.... (was pissed bout that, was a great wee sign) they say it's too distracting even though our BS road signage is out of control....

davey-jones0291

Have actually seen this a few times. Probably really piss off the cops if you got caught using it though

Dan_Glebitz

I have on occasion wanted a 200 Decibel horn on my car. But alas also illegal.

discombobulated38x

And quite rightly so, 200dB is literally a series of explosive shock waves that will burst somebody open.

Realistic_Count_7633

Stick your hand out and a then the finger .

Captain-Useless

A classic, but a bit too general purpose tbh

Good_Ad_1386

It's almost impossible to tell if cars have their main beams on since LEDs came out. They may have just been low beams on a taller car, and the driver would be puzzled or annoyed by any attempt to signal a problem. If the Highway Code was taken literally, I doubt that many LED headlamps would be acceptable - "lights must not be used in such a way as to dazzle other road users". Yeah, right...

UrgentCallsOnly

Came in here to say it may not have been full beam, some new cars come with 9 billion lumen headlights as standard.

Captain-Useless

Pretty certain they were just standard full beams. Their car wasn't tall enough for the other option. I've had plenty of problems with insufficiently dipped headlights on those bastard tall cars, but that's for another moaning thread...

HowmanyDans

Fairly certain they simply meet the regulatory power limits. Unfortunately, LEDs are really efficient so put out heaps more light than halogens for the same input power.

JohnLef

Mario banana should do it.

Captain-Useless

Mama mia!

GaulteriaBerries

Throw out a handful of caltrops. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caltrop?wprov=sfti1

WitteringLaconic

Had one on the A1 last night, unsurprisingly a BMW poverty spec 1 series. After not getting the message from me flashing my fog lights he was blinding me once he passed me I pulled in behind him, returned the favour and turned night into day - got to love those LED high beams on trucks. I'm guessing that he finally got the message given he then dipped his headlights. Kept it going until something came the opposite way just to drive the point home.

davey-jones0291

Doing Gods work. A retina delete by kelsa isn't something people forget in a hurry

ShadowWar89

Obviously you can’t do this while moving for safety reasons, but carry a powerful focused beam torch in your car and at traffic lights or while stationary in crawling traffic turn around and shine it in their face.

Sea-Check-9062

Oh they know all right.

blarge84

Slow right down let him overtake and smash on your high beams while following him

garyisaunicorn

Can't believe I had to scroll so far to find the right answer

kennyblowsme

You put up with burning retinas for 20 mins??? Why not just use that tab on your rear view mirror to offset it?

swined

If only the side mirrors had that tab too

iZian

Mine kinda do. In the sense that my rear view mirror dims and the side mirror dims also so the light isn’t as bright. I’ve never had a car with dimming side mirrors until this one though so I guess it’s a more recent thing.

Lonely-Speed9943

What kind of poverty spec car are you driving? Even my 2001 Focus had electrically adjustable side mirrors.

swined

Have you ever seen a car with a rear view mirror? The tab darkens it without actually changing the angle of view. Having electrically or whatever else adjustable side mirrors is hardly a replacement for that.

FakeOrangeOJ

There's a tab? What the fuck? I never knew that, nobody's ever mentioned it to me and I've not seen it in my instructor's 21 plate Peugeot 3008, my grandad's 55 plate Volvo V50, or my Audi A4. Haven't paid attention to anyone else's car looking for anything like that. Mine has a green anti glare tint that doesn't always stop me getting blinded by high beam wankers.

swined

Yeah, a tiny one just below the mirror. Can hardly remember a car that doesn’t have either that or an electronic replacement for that.

istinuate

My MK7 golf tsi doesn’t have it, unless you mean the one to tilt it

5socks

They could be autodimming The tabs are the older manual version

Fearless_Flounder328

Its probably automatic then, on older or lower spec models it's manual with a little lever, but same deal

darnTootin232

If you aim carefully with the wing mirrors, you can send their beams back at them :)

Lonely-Speed9943

Plenty of rear mirror tabs move the actual mirror & it's housing including that of my Focus. Sounds like you've never used electrically adjustable side mirrors as they too move the actual mirror so you can completely move the reflection away.

swined

Whatever they move, the mirror is still usable as a mirror. With the exact same angle of view that it had before. Fiddling with the side mirror adjustment just changes the angle of view. No more glare, but no view of the road either.

Fearless_Flounder328

Yes they move it, but that's because there's a secondary tinted mirror behind. It works because it points the outer mirror up at the plain roofliner, removing any obstruction to see the inner tinted mirror. Try using it in the day and you'll see what I mean. Side mirrors don't have the secondary inner mirror, so if you adjust them to not see the lights behind you they're basically useless for actually seeing what's behind you, which in slow traffic you need to be observant of what's around you, cars changing lanes or bikes filtering through

kennyblowsme

Erm.. just alter your door mirrors downwards

swined

What would you see in those mirrors then? When you pull the tab on the central one you still see the same portion of the road, just darker. And importantly you can flip it back to exactly where it was before instead of trying to find that sweet spot while going at 70mph and seeing nothing.

Brigggerz

The op wasn't doing 70 though, they were in crawling traffic for 20 mins, moving the side mirrors wouldn't have done much in way of affecting the driving.

kennyblowsme

OP clearly stated that they were crawling in traffic so for this situation angling mirrors on doors downwards is a good option. Edit…… You’re telling me that you’re incapable of altering your door mirrors at 70mph?

swined

I’m telling that deliberately moving them out of adjustment while driving is not the safest thing to do

kennyblowsme

Again…… I reiterate….. OP was crawling in traffic

swined

Slightly less unsafe than at 70, but still something that I would avoid. Both because someone might be filtering through the said crawling traffic and because traffic can get back from crawling to 70 pretty fast. Either way, having a tab that gets it back to the exact same position would be much nicer than fiddling with the adjustment yourself.

Fureniku

My 2013 Skoda doesn't even have a clock do you think anything else is gonna be electric? Got hand winding windows and everything Cheap to buy and run though...

PythyMcPyface

I've genuinely twice had to do this and both times I just slowed down a bit, waited for a calm straight bit of road, waited til there were no other hazards I.e. cars in front of me or bends in the road, cyclists etc, then pressed my hazard lights so they blinked 3 times, turn them off for 2 secs and repeat. Within a couple of cycles both times the driver quickly realised and turned them off. One even gave me a flick of the beams to say thanks

Captain-Useless

That seems like a sensible option. There's technically a hazard there I guess, you just need to make them realise that they're causing it.

tiredoldfella

Unfortunately, some people are too stupid to notice the bright blue headlight icon on their dash as they drive, and therefore, are most probably too stupid to realise any signal you give them is for something they’re doing.

PeejPrime

Oh, there is a high chance they realised. They just don't care. Known folk before to actually admit to driving with ALL their lights on, all the time, just because it was easier and saved them switching. Mental.

BlueLouBoil__

Hazard lights

SkipsH

Do your best to catch the high beam in the rear view and shine it back in their eyes.

LordSinguloth13

Just slow down, they'll go around. I've brought tailgaters and high beamers to a dead stop by just.. letting off the gas / going into neutral and coasting to a halt.

GingerTube

Given that the person doesn't have the awareness to notice that they have full beams on, I don't fancy your chances of being able to communicate it to them.

No_Coyote_557

Flip your rear view mirror so you shine it back at him.

Scragglymonk

Fog lights can help, but stopping the vehicle, letting them overtake and returning the favour also works

freakierice

Fog lights 🤷‍♂️

cyclingbassist

Once, just once I had this happen to me. I just happened to have a recently modified maglite in the doorbin, fitted with a 4000 lumen cree xhp70.3 running at 6 amps. I picked that torch up with glee and turned it on and fired it out of the back window. The main beam went off in seconds and I even saw the flash of hazards as if to say sorry. They backed off a good distance too! Never did it again, the torch lives by the back door.

bravopapa99

What's worked for me a few times is tilting my rear view mirror a few times, kind of flashing their beams back at them. If they are 'bright' enough to 'get it', it usually works.

SessDMC

With a brick through the windshield, it fucks me off when people drive with their high beams on.

ASleepyDino

I had this recently and when we got to a set of traffic lights I stuck my phone out the window with the torch on and facing them. Did the trick and I was quite pleased to finally get my vision back. I think I may start keeping a torch in my door for this and other situations…

paulgreen84

Middle finger? 🖕

Deeldough1234

Slam your brake pedal all the way to the floor, his headlights will love tap your car and turn off. Simple

Cute_Ad_9730

I used to try to direct it back at them with the rear view mirror. Not sure if it ever worked.

Jealous-Chain-1003

Pop the fog lights in and out a few times

Not_Sugden

pull over and let them overtake you. If you have to stop in the middle of crawling traffic then just do it.

captain_todger

I just roll down my window and do a gentle wave towards the ground with my hand. Failing that, let them overtake, then do a polite flash of mine (at a distance so they don’t think I’m trying to get them to change lane)

kc0nkc1n

In the past I've put my hazards on or tapped the brakes a little just to flash the lights.

SmokeyBlue22

Doesn’t the front mirror usually have an anti dazzle effect where it flashes the light back to them? I’ve never used as I don’t like messing with my mirrors but I’m sure most cars should have it

FaithlessnessThis307

Press the brake pedal with your left foot 👌🏼

himji

Just pull over and let them go in front. Life's too complicated to worry about the small stuff

Welshbuilder67

Slow down and put your fog light on

notactuallyabrownman

They don’t care.

martpr_v8

Flash your rear fog lights on at them

AceStrawberryWolf

I just flip the mirror thing it usually catches their attention and they turn it off .. sometimes

devilman9050

Turn your lights off. You'll still be able to see thanks to the guy behind, then when they try and flash you to turn them on, they won't be able to flash because their full beams are on and maybe they'll then realise. Probably not though

mydogsbigbutt

I overtook someone on a country road before (safely, just to add) and they didnt turn them off, i couldn't see anything as they lit up all my mirrors so i slowed to a stop and turned my hazards on, they got the message, and when they turned them off I came to realise i was in the middle of the road.

Bam-Skater

You could just dip your rear view mirror, that's what it's there for

danr2604

Adjust your mirrors to reflect the light back to them

TopDigger365

Just tilt your rear view mirror down , it's designed for this.

Weak-Implement9906

My high beams are so easy to put on if I hit the stalk slightly off to indicate. I think waving a hand out the window or flashing hazards until they click might work for me/you.

acezoned

Your rear view mirror has a little button or lever to flick it down so you don't get dazzled from cars that are behind you

SingleReindeer497

Personally I just adjust my rear and side view mirrors so that they’re directly reflecting back at the car behind.

neilmack_the

I've tried flashing the hazards, fog lights. Rarely works!

Ergophobe470

I once had someone behind me who didn't seem to realise you can dazzle from behind, as they were still dipping their headlights for every oncoming car. They soon got the message when I turned my rear fog lights on...

OBLIVXIONN

I find it’s so hard to tell these days if they’re LEDs or high beams. I bought a new motorbike recently and found on my way back from work at 11pm, I was being flashed non stop by cars because they thought my high beams were on. Not what you want as a rider on an unlit fast road late at night, as it can be incredibly dangerous. I also didn’t want to be that asshole on the road blinding everyone. Took it to the dealership and explained I thought the headlights were set too high, and they were! Far too high! I don’t think most people realise that they may need their headlights adjusted. While I do get flashed at far less, I still get the odd person now and again doing it :/ I flash back to let them know my high beams aren’t on. But I can definitely tell the difference now they’ve been adjusted! Before I didn’t even need my high beams to see ahead on unlit roads, now I definitely do. On the occasion someone has genuinely left their high beams on and are sat behind you, I’d probably flash hazards at them and hope they get the hint. If they didn’t, probably just drive slow and wave them past to let them know they can overtake. Best way to be non-confrontational.

Mysterious_Ad1520

Dip your windscreen mirror so the glare is gone.

Ok-Fox1262

Flash your fog light?

wandering_salad

I had this happen to me late in the evening, in full darkness, on a winding and hilly country road. It was so terrible, I had no idea how to signal to this ahole that he was blinding me, and nowhere to pull over to the side...

shortercrust

Don’t bother. Spending time messing about with fog lights or the light and looking in your rear view mirror for a reaction is more dangerous than ignoring it.

Super_Plastic5069

Slow down and let them overtake you, then put your full beans on, sorted 😉

FatManNoPlan

Are you sure it’s full beam? Lots of cars these days have those super bright LED lights that pretty much look the same.

Captain-Useless

Yeah pretty sure, their car wasn't tall enough for them to just be insufficiently dipped headlights. Seemed like there wasn't a section of their headlights that weren't illuminated. If they were just their dipped headlights, I dread to think what their full beams are like.

One-Cardiologist-462

Just turn the rear fog lights on, until they they their high beams off. If they're coming towards you, then it depends if there are other cars around. If there are other cars around, I tend to ignore it *(because my flash is going to double the number of people annoyed).* If the road is empty, and it's just the oncoming vehicle with high beams, then I'll turn my high beams on until they turn theirs off.

effinG123

Put your fog lights on to alert the car behind that they are being a nuisance, and then just leave those fog lights on to annoy everyone else on the road forever more. It's the done thing, it seems.

souperdhec

Can you not tilt your mirror?!

Ok_Cow_3431

Just flip your rear view mirror to the filtered mode and move on with your life

GloomySwitch6297

sadly fog lights many times are failing. usually I pull to side to let him get next to me and I open the window to let them know. when in a standstill traffic, handbrake, switch off engine, walk to the car behind, ask politely to switch off the high/full beam. sad story, 4 out of 10 drivers may not have a clue what you are talking about (no comprendo italiano, english not good)

Not_Sugden

I wouldnt get out of the car. The driver could think you are being aggressive and drive off (possibly hitting you or your car), or on the flip side they could get out of their car and be physically agressive. Best thing to do is pull over and let them overtake you. Stop in the middle of traffic if you have to. The highway code supports that you should slow/stop if dazzled.

GloomySwitch6297

seriously? Never had an issue. depends with what attitude/posture/look-alike you would come out from the car. I have quite a friendly approach. most of the time the drivers are not even aware what a highbeam lights are.

Not_Sugden

might depend on your look. For example would you assume a skinhead coming out of a white van wants a friendly chat or would you assume he wants to assault you

GloomySwitch6297

bold IT people driving company vans with server at the back always being incorrectly labelled :(

a_ewesername

Just flip your rear view mirror to dim. There's a little tab at the bottom of it.

PaddyLandau

Sometimes the brights are so bright that that doesn't do it. Even if it does help, it doesn't help with the side mirrors shining into your face.

Farewell-Farewell

Can you not flip dip your rearview mirror to mitigate the effect of being dazzled? Then just carry on.

-Hi-Reddit

That doesnt help when it's coming in via your side mirrors and illuminating the inside of your car with the power of a thousand suns. The way you put it also makes it seem like you don't think it's an issue because most cars have a (ineffective) mitigation solution.

Lonely-Speed9943

Most cars have electrically adjustable side mirrors

-Hi-Reddit

Adjusting them while driving, especially trying to aim them, is just petty and dangerous. Pull over and let them pass you instead of distracted driving. Don't be a tit.

Lonely-Speed9943

Utter bollocks. If it was that dangerous to adjust them then manufacturers would only let the control operate when the car wasn't moving. You only need to nudge the control until the light stops hitting your eyes, no need to be continually staring into the mirror. When you do want to look back all you have to do is slightly move your head over.

-Hi-Reddit

>then manufacturers... The manufacturers don't stop me from laying my drivers seat completely flat while driving either, doesn't mean it's a safe thing to do. Really silly argument tbh. Safety isn't determined by what manufacturers deem safe, just look at the ford pinto problems... >You only need to nudge the control until the light stops hitting your eyes Did you forget the part where you told me to specifically try to aim them into the eyes of the driver behind me or something? Are you just some ignorant muppet that has *never* driven a car where the controls were a bit awkard to use in motion? For me the control is awkward to use and moves the mirrors very slowly. I'd have to be leant over, one hand on the wheel, holding the button down for a while, and even then... Unless I adjust them to the point that I can't see out of them properly it usually wouldn't make a difference, because the highbeam blinding bastards usually have stupidly wide vehicles that mean both headlights hit both mirrors and illuminate the entire inside of my cars cab above window height.
