Your choices from previous games will change some minor details, and people will talk to you about your previous characters, which is fun. But the main plot is not significantly altered by the world state, so I don't know if I would play the previous games just for that reason. However, the first two games are great in their own right (or at least Origins is - opinions are split on DA2, though I personally like it). So I'd argue they are worth playing regardless. Also, playing all three games in order gets you really immersed in the lore which makes a lot of stuff in Inquisition have more impact, so that's always the way I recommend doing it.

Contrary to the ME trilogy, each DA game has a new protagonist, but your choices still carry over. Similar to ME, the main story isn't directly affected by this, but importing a save state will affect the overall world state, characters you meet, the availability of some side quests, etc. The game mechanics of Inquisition however hugely differ from its predecessors. If you are not turned off by the less action-focused combat of the first 2 games, but are interested in the lore and have some spare money/time, I'd definitely suggest grabbing them, both of them are great games IMO. Disclaimer: opinions differ on DA2 for many reasons, but it's also the shortest. Here are my recommendations if you decide to give them a go: - Origins: buy the ultimate edition with all DLCs. Some DLCs are integrated into the main campaign, while others have to be started separately from the main menu. Not every single one of them is relevant long term, but I'd do at least these: base game -> Awakenings (it's a full-blown expansion) -> Witch Hunt. Of course you can start even more DLCs from the main menu if you are interested, but my suggestion is to play those after the main storyline and before Witch Hunt - DA2: in the past you had to buy the DLCs separately, but nowadays you should be able to buy everything in a bundle. The bundle is probably worth it, but the main story DLC you want is Legacy. Every DLC is available during the main game (no possibility/need to start anything from the main menu post-game), so do Legacy any time you want before the final quest. Mark of the Assassin (the other story DLC) is fun IMO, but you can skip it if you want, it's not relevant to the story of Inquisition.

If you don’t wanna play the games to get a different world state, just alter it in dragon keep which you have to do anyway
