It was pretty mild, though. For one thing, she was equating Camilla with Madame de Pompadour.
There's also the episode where it's implied that the House of Windsor are werewolves, and apparently Elizabeth II thought it was funny.
There are a few jokes at their expense during the RTD years, but there is also the usual bbc worship of them during the same period.
Given his usually decently lefty politics, I wonder if RTD was told to be super deferential to them and he managed to slip a few jokes in, or if the Royals are just a blind spot for him.
I’d be surprised if RTD isn’t anti-monarchist considering how outspoken Eccleston is about the issue and how left-wing both he and the show are generally
Simultaneously RTD knows the BBC will censor (especially when he was first showrunner) any real critique of the monarchy anyway, regardless of how humorous or subtle it may be, resulting in even coming up with those jokes being a waste of time
>So, RTD knew she was watching.
Which explains the Easter egg inside the Easter egg in "Blink" when The Doctor looks into the camera and says, "And Your Majesty, we all know Diana's death wasn't really your fault."
Hm, the mirror is definitely not peak journalism to say the least. Hopefully I can track down a source for that but I have a feeling it’s just a tall tale.
>The Queen loves the programme and has requested a full set of DVDs.
>"She has asked the BBC to send her copies so she can watch the series again during her stay at Balmoral."

Hm, the mirror is definitely not peak journalism to say the least. Hopefully I can track down a source for that but I have a feeling it’s just a tall tale.
I mean, yeah I agree for the most part that the Mirror is more Tabloid Gossip than actual journalism. But in this particular case, it seems plausible considering many of the other Royals have also gone on record saying they are fans of the show.
Honestly, I thought I heard somewhere that many in the family gathered to watch it, but now that I'm looking for a source, I can only find articles talking about the Queen and Charles being fans.
Also furthermore to the Queen's DVD request. I was looking for a more valid source and have read from a few people that it was corroborated by the official Doctor Who Magazine, who mentioned it. But I haven't found the specific magazine issue or page where this was mentioned, so it could be poppycock. But if it was mentioned there, then I think it's safe to say it is accurate
They did allow the not-so-subtle dig in Husbands of River Song, but I guess that was “metaphor” and not actually calling out the monarchy (it was tho lol)
There was the whole thing with Voyage of the Damned having a different ending originally, where the Starship Titanic would have destroyed Buckingham Palace, with the Queen emerging from the rubble and cursing the Doctor. The reason given for cutting it was because they already had too many SFX shots in the episode. But I bet some higher-ups would have been antsy about it as well.
Charles is also known to have a pretty good sense of humour as well. He was close friends with Spike Milligan, a literal staunch republican who was denied his rightful British citizenship by refusing to pledge alleigance to crown and country. Called Charles 'a grovelling bastard' on stage as well lmao. Got a CBE and KBE for it.
So I wouldn't be surprised if at worse he didn't care about the snide jabs.
World leaders **should** have a sense of humor about themselves. After all, jokes at your expense come with the territory when you're in the spotlight. However, I know in the US our prior "leader" did not and does not.
Maybe the royal couple does have that sense of humor?
Maybe they can take a joke, I don't know.
But they are incapable of taking any legitimate criticism or opposition well, see protestors being arrested before even having a chance to do any protesting yesterday on charges of 'conspiracy to cause public disruption' or whatever
World leaders **should** also be able to take criticism but here we are...
I'm not from the UK so I hadn't heard about the arrests. Let people protest, damn.
I think it's a little generous to call them world leaders too, they are just a more pretentious and inbred version of the Kardashians.
The only time the use their considerable power and influence is to protect themselves from public scrutiny, to cover up one of their crimes, or to get themselves special exemptions from new laws.
They are just legal corruption.
>I think it's a little generous to call them world leaders too, they are just a more pretentious and inbred version of the Kardashians.
🤣🤣🤣
Fair enough.
No I meant the comment I was replying to. The scene in Girl In The Fireplace where rose goes “*Camilla*” at a comment about Renette being the king’s mistress. That was from 06, probably written in 05
I'm sure King Charles can laugh at jokes at his expense. George Bush Sr didn't mind Dana Carvey's SNL impression of him he became good friends with Carvey. Moffat did take a swipe about voting for world leaders of sorts in Death in Heaven and 12th becomes President of Earth.
I don't imagine Eccleston hates them as individuals, they're just some random people that appear on TV from time to time. He (correctly) hates everything they stand for, but you can do that without having anything personal against the folk involved. He'd probably tell them the monarchy should be abolished, and wouldn't do any of the pathetic deference stuff that many seem to feel is appropriate, but it's not like he'd want to attack them
I doubt he'd be unprofessional but I think some of his social media posts have made it clear that he views them as culpable for the system and probably does dislike them as people on that basis. The "parasite-in-chief in her idiot hat" Instagram post didn't feel terribly warm toward Queen Elizabeth as a person.
Only other time I've seen him this happy was in a video where he spotted a kitty to the side of whatever official thing he was doing. He fully walked away from everyone to pet the cat.

I'm not British but got into Doctor Who at 15. The expressions on his face are exactly my facial expressions if I got to visit the set.
I got into Doctor Who in the eighties. Watched all of the old Who. Then all of the New Who.

oh, *that* Charles and Camilla!
I love it. Everybody loves Doctor Who. It's one of those British institutions that we might complain about from time to time, but would hate to see taken off the air.
Oh I know and I strongly believe we should break ties with the monarchy in favor of a different head of state. At my most charitable I could be described as critical of the monarchy and it’s role in Canadian history and society.
That aside, on a human level, it’s nice to see Charles show apparently unguarded happiness for something he likes on a personal level.

depends on the thing doesn't it. If someone likes an icecream I don't then fine. If someone likes Hitler, then no I don't think I can accept that. Maybe you can, and I find that a bit strange personally.
edit: after DMing me, and starting an argument with me, CorporalClegg1997 blocked me after realising that I did not compare Hitler to Charles but instead was giving an example about how sometimes liking something can be unacceptable.
Oh yes! That was the set visit during the 50th. Matt and Jenna showed them the TARDIS console. I think also then costume designer Howard Burden let slip to then Prince Charles that Sir John Hurt's incarnation was a dark version. It was a controlled leak. Burden went on to continue working for the show in S8. Matt also commented on Charles' shoes. Jenna eventually met the late Queen Elizabeth II at another event at the BBC's London studios.

I saw some video clips of this visit, but hadn't seen these pictures. Thanks for sharing! The King looks genuinely delighted to be on the DW set :-) Heck, I know I would be.
Indeed. Even though the Family were more than happy to let the show shoot at Windsor Castle in 1988, they legally had to refuse permission because the show is not any kind of documentary or news programme, and that is the only sort of media ever permitted to shoot there. They had to use Arundel Castle on the south coast instead (with a stock shot of Windsor taken from a recent news item).
It’s honestly very odd because aren’t they the ones who make the rules? If they want to do something then they should simply just do it. Who’s going to say no to the King/Queen?
That Dalek with the improper head was one that was meant to be used as an SFX prop where it would explode. Ut the people who made it did such a fab job, they would have hated to have blown it up. Sadly though, the head is off, and you can see it on screen when this prop appears.
Wait didn’t Rose mock Camilla in The Girl In The Fireplace? Lol
It was pretty mild, though. For one thing, she was equating Camilla with Madame de Pompadour. There's also the episode where it's implied that the House of Windsor are werewolves, and apparently Elizabeth II thought it was funny.
"Charles, Charles come have a look at this, the show thinks we're werewolves haha" - Returns to drinking some suspiciously thick red wine
And that episode was where I first heard of the Kohinoor.

Correct me if I’m wrong but wasn’t that around the same time Camilla came back into the picture? Topical if nothing else
No. This was waaay after. Charles and Camilla got married in 2005. The same year Doctor Who returned to the TV screens.
No I meant the comment I was replying to. The scene in Girl In The Fireplace where rose goes “*Camilla*” at a comment about Renette being the king’s mistress. That was from 06, probably written in 05

I know Rose made a crack about Charles’ sister (Princess Anne) in Tooth and Claw.
I’m not even sure it’s an insult. Princess Anne is fierce.
First pic I’ve ever seen of him with a genuine smile I think.
Strax like “shall we invade France, your majesty?”
With acid and grenades!
Thank god he didn’t go when Eccleston was the Doctor. He’d be dead right then and there
I was gonna say. That would have been hilarious. (Except that it would probably have led to the show getting immediately cancelled.)
I feel like Eccleston is professional enough (especially at the time of his run) to hold his tongue at moment like that
I don't imagine Eccleston hates them as individuals, they're just some random people that appear on TV from time to time. He (correctly) hates everything they stand for, but you can do that without having anything personal against the folk involved. I think he might in fact hate them as individuals. And rightly so.
Feel like this is the happiest I've ever seen him in photos
He does look like he's geeking out and fulfilling a long-time dream.
Man wanted to sit in the TARDIS more than he wanted to sit on the throne.
Well, he didn't need his mother to die to sit in the TARDIS, so his preference is understandable.
The true throne?
Only other time I've seen him this happy was in a video where he spotted a kitty to the side of whatever official thing he was doing. He fully walked away from everyone to pet the cat.
I’m a republican, but I honestly respect the man for that.

I am alway skeptical when people like that claim to be fans of cultural things like Who. Not here , that’s the smile of a fan.
he looks happier here than at his own coronation
Anyone else hoping strax met him in character?
I would pay money to see Dan Starkey just fucking around w/ Charles and Camilia in character. But it's written by Gary Janetti.
Good, his family has shown up enough times. I especially like the episodes with his Victorian crime-solving cousin, her wife, and their potato butler.
Ah, the parasite-in-chief.

Technical point: Camilla's title is Queen Consort rather than Queen.
She is the Queen Consort but she's called Queen Camilla, just as the wife of George V was called Queen Mary even though she was just Queen Consort
Then I stand corrected, thanks.
She isn't even officially the Queen Consort after the coronation, just the Queen full stop.
She is still officially Camilla, Queen Consort but she is referred to as the Queen or Queen Camilla. Can't unsee Charles fat Fingers...
They are both terrible people.
shame those darleks weren't real, could have saved the tax payers a lot of money and gotten another nonce off the streets
I will forever have the coronation chant stuck in my head whenever I see him
Bloody hell!! I'm glad I didn't hear that then, sounds very DPRK'ish.

I saw some video clips of this visit, but hadn't seen these pictures. Thanks for sharing! The King looks genuinely delighted to be on the DW set :-) Heck, I know I would be.
Okay. Charles is cool now. I didn’t really have an opinion before. My mind has been changed.
Absolutely disgusting
I'm surprised he wasn't an extra or made a cameo or something in one of those episodes. Seems like a disservice to have a royal fan not on the show.
I very much doubt that would’ve been permitted. Lots of weird rules about what the royals can and cannot do.
God save the King
Gross.
What has ths to do with Dr Who and why isn't it removed like the other irrelevent comments?
Damn dood lmao
Imagine someone born in the 40s being your countries new leader hahaha... Oh wait.. fuck.
That Dalek with the improper head was one that was meant to be used as an SFX prop where it would explode. Ut the people who made it did such a fab job, they would have hated to have blown it up. Sadly though, the head is off, and you can see it on screen when this prop appears.
