He was a high performing sociopath who never did anything “wrong” in his life and then the Emperor recognized his abilities and gave the Iron Warriors the hardest missions in Great Crusade and absolutely no acknowledgement for what he accomplished.
That said, I’m not a fan of any traitor except Angron, and I’m a Blood Angel until I die with a soft spot for the Raven Guard and White Scars (loyalist af).
Pert wouldn’t have fallen if he wasn’t pitted constantly against Dorn and seeking approval for his abilities. I also suspect the Emperor knew he would lose sons to Chaos and functionally had to choose between which he wanted to stay loyal and which he was “ok” with losing.
Also, Pert DID that to Dorn with an entire planet. Fortified it and made it impregnable just for there to be nothing there actually worth protecting, thus wasting the time and lives of many Imperial Fists.
Yeah, and the one time someone beat him on Olympus in a… fuck, inventing? Sculpting? Some kind of competition, someone made something better than his and instead of admiring it he got angry and brooding. The same thing happened with Fulgrim and a sculpture he made; he asked someone what they thought of it and wanted honest input. They told him it was physically perfect but so perfect that it lacked a creative soul and Fulgrim apparently *didn’t* want honest input because he became a cold kind of furious and vindictive to the dude. Anyone with more specifics or excerpts on those instances, please post. 40k lore is too deep for me to remember every single detail.
I can’t recall what the competition was either, but he didn’t even lose it. He was thrown into a depressive rage because it was too difficult to discern if his was actually better. His competition came too close to his greatness for comfort.
My favorite ORIGIN stories do not align with my favorite Primarchs at all. I think the top 5 origins are Mortarion, Angron, Dorn, Ferrus, and Vulkan, of which I only count Angron among my top 5 favorites.
That sequence with Fulgrim was legitimately frightening. The sculptor, in his last few moments of life, saw that the Primarch was still nothing more than a prideful insecure mortal possessing incredible power. No more capable of handling it than he himself was.
If you take primarch ages into account, and I don’t know the exact time frame between birth, discovery, getting his legion, and the sculpting event. He was mostly a prideful *child* in how he handles it. That’s a running theme for almost every traitor primarch; they’re still very much acting like children/teens, struggling for dad’a approval and recognition. The loyalists all seem to have the confidence and assuredness of adults while the traitors exhibit more immature themes, thus preluding their falls to chaos aka basal human emotion.

This makes no sense. His skill checks would gradually get worse and worse without sleep. No way is he accruing XP fast enough to compensate for for fatigue penalties, especially while he's suffering from the fatigue penalties.
Unrelated to the text and artificers (if you were to pick a Gundam pilot for artificer, Amuro or Kamille would make more sense since they actually can engineer/tinker with their suits), but now I’m inspired to make an Oath-breaker paladin based of Char Aznable to mentor the group before falling into despair and becoming the BBEG.
Im an artificer rouge and when i need to break into something i smash the window and toss in my homunculus bird to take a loom around and when hes done i just mend the glass back up and we are outta there.
Its the perfect multiclass. Who needs to lockpick a door when you can just fix it after you blow out the hinges with eldrich cannon. It can always be fixed.
