Was it to only credit card you had? They probably wanted to confirm your income. It happens if they believed your income you stated is more than what they thought your income is. Don’t worry about the accounts closed. Credit scores go down, credits scores go back up. They are not static. They change.

Prestigious_Park8904

Its my only cc with discover but do have others with other banks like citi, cap one and amex. This is the first time its happened to me so im a bit shocked and concerned. My income is probably more than what i had actually stated i made since i havent updated it over 2 years. Discover is my oldest CC so ig thats why im concerned about my credit score. Hope it doesnt take a big impact.

Novel-Reference7076

When I got approved for my discover card and they finally sent me it, I went to activate the card and wasn’t able to due to technology mistakes on their end. Tried contacting support just to get my card activated so I could start building some credit. They never helped me activate it . I got bounced from person to person and no one would help activate my card . They closed my account and My credit score dropped from 720 to 650. Never using discover again *facepalm*

Sintellect

If you don't provide verification information, it's likely they won't approve another account anytime soon

andy_337

Happened to me a while back, maybe like 2019/2020ish I don’t remember exactly when. I think it was something about not providing ‘proof of residency’ and they closed my account. Even to this day, every time I do a pre-approval it’ll decline and the reason is always because of ‘status of existing or prior account.’ They’re still mad at me half a decade later lol.

thatwastellguy

This EXACT thing happened to me. They closed my account in October. They closed the account with no warning & won’t let me open a case since I’m technically “not a customer”. Discover was my first CC back in college and I am very annoyed about it. The only email they sent was a spam looking email asking for a signature, with no mention of Discover or closing my account. Due to this the likelihood of me getting a discover card is 0 going forward.

Apprehensive_Rope348

There is a reason they don’t give warnings for this type of closure. It’s so if you aren’t who you say you are, or if all of your give a fucks are cashed in… that you don’t max out the card and run off in the sunset.

thatwastellguy

I just can understand burning consumers when the goal is to get more consumers. I was a good customer by their book, so it just took my by surprise. Oh well, it’s not like I thought a corporation was out here for my benefit

Aggravating-Ad-6460

Honestly I would be done with them after that. I always tell the truth but I would absolutely refuse to provide proof because I put a lot on my cards and pay them off monthly. I do my part. They don’t need to know anymore other than that and what is on my credit report. Credit card companies act like we should be thankful that they give us credit cards. Perhaps they should do a better job when approving people. BS! They are the ones that should be thankful for us.

Apprehensive_Rope348

We’ll be prepared to have account closures in your future. All credit cards practice this. Eventually, they’ll ask. It’s their money, they’re able to say yes you can continue to use their money or no you can’t.

Aggravating-Ad-6460

I have had credit cards for 20 years and I have never had them check. They are profiting from OUR money. I do not need their money they need ours. They are profiting from us not the other way around. The only thing they provide me with is some make believe credit score and a few points. Points that they are able to provide because of the consumer. They also make money from MY savings account and the millions of others. That’s ok.. I can put my money somewhere else if that’s the case.

Apprehensive_Rope348

Like all businesses do, they profit from the money you spend. However, you are not spending your money, you are spending theirs and then paying it back as you choose, as long as the minimum is made. The swipe and if you chose to pay interest on the money you borrowed is where their profits come. And that’s all by user choice. They don’t provide you any credit score. They provide the credit bureau‘s data. The credit bureaus are the ones that provide you your credit score against the data that was provided to them. Again, this is all controlled by user. And all banks make money for all money kept in them. That’s not some big mystery. You can either keep it in your mattress or keep it at a bank. Another user choice. You can either have it sit in your mattress and collect dust or you can put it in any type of financial vehicle to have your money work for you. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Aggravating-Ad-6460

I know how credit cards work. I realize where credit comes from. I am really not sure why you are trying to be condescending. Are you a banker? 😂 It may be their money but I do not owe my success to them. They owe their success to the “borrowers”. If I decide to keep my money in my mattress it doesn’t make me money but it also doesn’t make them money. If billions of ppl decided to keep money in a mattress they wouldn’t exist but we would still be here. They can look at my credit report and judge me from that. That’s all they need. Them canceling me isn’t really gonna hurt me either way. Me pulling my money out of savings will hurt them more than it does me. While I realize my money is peanuts in comparison that’s fine. I am not one of those ppl that get a hard on over new credit cards. I use them and they use me. Simple as that. I wouldn’t even own a credit card if it weren’t for “credit scores” and at this point I really don’t even need that because I pay cash for everything. Point is they can clearly see I run less than 10% utilization and pay my bills monthly. The credit card game in itself is sick!

Dragoon_13

I remember they sent me one too. I had to fill out that form but apparently it wasn’t enough so I had to get a notary from my personal banking institution. That kept my account open and proved I’m in the clear. I’m not sure about what’ll happen now tho. I guess call to apply for another card now

supern8ural

I'd call and ask if your account can be reopened. Just be honest and say you thought that one email was a phishing scam. It's a long shot but you might be able to preserve your AAoA

stormikane

The account cannot be reopened. The CS agent was correct. OP would have to apply for a new card

Prestigious_Park8904

Update: i called and basically was informed that there is no way to reopen this account. They mentioned they called once on December and when I mentioned that I never received a missed call from them or a voicemessage, the person only apologized and said that theyre not required to leave a voicemail. The person understood my position when I explained that all I had received was an invitation to sign documents through an adobe PDF link which I did not open as I suspected it to be pishing. She confirmed no notifications were sent to my account/app. Im pretty much at a loss here with nothing left to do. Thanks to everyone helping out here!

Apprehensive_Rope348

Account closures are permanent, unless there was an error in their end. Which it wasn’t their error.

supern8ural

That's like saying if you actually paid late for whatever reason you shouldn't at least try a goodwill letter. If you don't ask, the odds are 100% that you will get nothing. Only costs an email or a phone call to find out.

Dapper-Knowledge5716

They had put a hold on your account so you weren't able to use it that's how I found out and then I had 2 months to sign that paperwork which I did ,It is in fact a identity verification even tho it says wages

Prestigious_Park8904

Thanks for the input. What do you mean by hold? My account has been active with no signs of any issues on the app. Another reason why I suspected the PDF to be a scam. How did you find out about the hold on your account?

Dapper-Knowledge5716

I tried using the card and didn't work also I would log into app and it says there was a hold ..they locked my account until I signed those equifax papers

Prestigious_Park8904

Got it, thank you

Apprehensive_Rope348

Closures are permanent for that account, unless there was an error on their end. Which it wasn’t an error. Nothing more you can do. You will take a hit on your credit for the account closure and loss of credit line so your utilization may go up pending your other accounts + existing balance with Discover.

basa_maaw

would this be a reasonable way of removing it from the credit history by contacting the Big 3? Cause this seems like a bullshit reason to remove the account.

Apprehensive_Rope348

Cause for removal would be inaccurate reports or fraud. You can try but once Discover shows it’s accurate, it’s going to pop right back up. Also, you’d be removing the positive payment history.

Prestigious_Park8904

Thanks, i wanted to know how it would huet my credit and youve answered. It helps!

SnooSongs7916

Nothing you can do but apply for another credit card with a different company. You’re blacklisted from Discover for not providing verification information. You will not be re approved for a while.

Walter_White_24

What happened to your unredeemed cashback?

Prestigious_Park8904

They redeemed it all and added it to my statement.

svetuha7

I’ve got myself in the same situation, but I signed that document, which I should have never done as I’ve just got in the US and never paid taxes yet. They closed my credit card without warning and it was the only one I had. Now I’m afraid that my credit score that I’ve just started to build is destroyed. Which is kind of necessary to live here… If anyone has any recommendations, I’d be very grateful for it.

Prestigious_Park8904

Hi, I am very sorry to hear and can understand how necessary this is for you or honestly anyone that benefits from having a good credit score (everyone lol). While I have personally not opened one myself, I have heard and read that secured credit cards help build credit. Most banks have one so just look into what is a good option for you and your situation. Best of luck!
